Major drive crash, can't find photos

The cable that connects my external drive to my MacBook Pro came loose while I was working in iPhoto (library was on external drive). When I reconnected and tried to use iPhoto again, some of my thumbnails were missing, so had iPhoto rebuild the thumbnails. I had to run it over night b/c it was taking ages.
Next morning, there was a hardware message on my laptop saying that I needed to reboot my computer by holding down the power button. This was not a system message, and the screen was otherwise frozen. When I got everything back up and running the external drive would no longer mount. I tried several programs to repair and mount the drive, but they all failed. So, I ran Data Rescue to retrieve the files off the drive. As it was recovering, the software will tell you which files it's recovering, and I recognized the file names generated by my camera. I have the photos somewhere.
Now I have several copies of my photo library now available to me, but when I launch iPhoto and point them at any of the libraries, I get nothing. Totally empty iPhoto. When I try any of the rebuild functions, iPhoto doesn't do anything.
What exactly represents the actual photos in the photo library package? I see about 12 files and only one of the ThumbxxSegment.data files looks large enough to be my photo database. I have another back up library on another drive that will open, but dates back several months so I'm still looking at a large loss of data. Nothing in that package looks like photos either.
At this point, I'd love to archive my photo files completely outside of the iPhoto structure. But I need to find my files first. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Needless to say that I am researching other image storage/organization options.
It sounds like the disk was damaged because it was disconnected while it was being written to. When you're finished with the recover reformat the drive, for OS X Extended (journaled) as usual, and see if it won't work as it should. Then for backup get another external HD and use Time Machine to backup the first EHD as well as your boot drive or at least your home folder.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

iPhoto can't find photo even though the thumbnail is present. Any help, there are dozens of photos in my library that won't open as iPhoto can't find them. This is probably a very common question!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We need to know the details of your problem and situation, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when you launch iPhoto to open your library?
what fixes have you tried before coming here?
    where is you library located?
how long has this been occuring?
did you apple any updates or upgrades just prior?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
What do you see when you click on a thumbnail?

Can I find photos from an entire event that seem to have disappeared?

    Larry,
I have a Mac Book Pro  2.53 GHz  Mid 2009
    Using OS X lion 10.75
I don't know what version of iphoto....just what was originally installed but I use an external storage drive for my photos and use time machine for back up.
I loaded the photos Friday night- thought they went into an event, deleted photos from my camera (dumb, I know) then in the morning a grey box with event date shows palm tree and sunset image but no photos.

  • How can I find photos that are not assigned to any collection?

    Hi !
    I'm using LR 5.7.1 on a Mac.
When I've retouched raw pictures with PS CC (and do not need the PSD file any longer) I export the PSD (that is in my catalog) as JPG and let it add to my catalog automatically. After that I delete the PSD file. That works fine.
But .... the new JPG file is not assigned to any collection. That's no problem unless I forget to do it manually after that export (and import).
That brings me to my question.
How can I find photos that are not assigned to any collection?
I tried it with a smart collection after I found nothing suitable in library filter. The search criteria I tried are Source -> Collection with any of the conditions. One with an empty value field, then with just a space and so on.
Has anybody a good hint for me?
    Thomas

You can also add numbers if you have collections that don't use alphabet characters.

  • How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • ITunes can't find photos to share on apple tv

iTunes can't find photos to share on Apple TV when photos were moved from iPhoto to the new Photos

Thanks for the suggestion Limnos but you're right that's not the answer...
iTunes Match allows 25,000 songs so I don't think apple see 20,000 as outside the design parameters.
Anyway I'll wait in hope that someone can offer a solution to the path that Finder uses for each different connection as that's where the answer lies, that or a way to change the path of the server in iTuens, but all the forums I have looked at suggest you can't do that?

  • Can't find photo error?

When i try to drag a photo or edit it. They all say "Can't find photo "xxxxxjpg" original cannot be found.

    Jerry:
Is this the warning you're getting? If so then it means that you using iPhoto in the alias mode, i.e. not copying the photos into the library folder upon import?
Check iPhoto's advanced preference section and see if it looks like this. If not, then the library just creates alias files pointing to the original's location at the time of import. If that location was the camera and you've subsequently erased the camera you've lost your photos.
    Do you Twango?

  • Can't find photo message

I saved my photos to iPhoto & iPhoto Library. I made some albums, arranged them.
I clicked the pictures on the Photos & in the albums, then i see "Can't find photo".
Even though, i tried to see them in Photos besides the new albums.
I still can't find the original photos.
I imported all my photos to my iMac 21" decktop.
I had no problems before with this.
I tried to share my photos through email & facebook, to few people.
Only couple of them recieved them. I don't want to have this problem no more.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thx,
    Susy.

What version of iPhoto? Of the OS?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
Do you have a back up?

  • Can't find photo's when trying to sync ipad to itunes

can't find photo's when sycing ipad to itunes

I also am having problems.  I have the newest ipad (4 and mini both) and also all software is up to date.  My itunes is 11.0.5 which is the most up to date version.  First off my ipad has over 7 GB of photos on it which is taking up too much space.  I want to delete my Photo Library which is apparently all photos off my laptop that got synced to my ipad.  The ipad itself will not allow a delete option in this Photo Library.  Additionally the new version of itunes does NOT have a Photo tab or option to click or otherwise which photos to sync.  It's as if photos through itunes was removed in their new software version.  Anyway...... I can not delete or remove from my ipads the photos that came from my main computer.... the only photos able to be deleted are those that I actually took from my ipad.  This is also true for my husbands iPhone 5....   Please help   Thank you

  • I have move all Pic to new drive, lightroom can't find PSD pictures?

I have moved all pictures and LRCAT to new drive, Lightroom can't find any PSD pictures?  Is this a problem with Lightroom?

    1.        I exported all pictures using export as a catalog  to a new external hard drive.  I’m using lightroom 5.  The file was large.  I have about 3000 missing pictures after to import to new drive.  sing find, I try to find the pictures.  I discovered that lightroom could not find any pictures with .PSD extension.  I would go to the prior drive and do a search using window explorer, I would find the picture with the PSD extension and go back to “find” again,  I would get to the correct folder and Lightroom would say there were no pictures in the folder.   I’m using the “!” on the corner of the missing picture to start the “ find”  and I work backwards until I find the correct folder that I identified using windows exployer.  Normally this process works great. Suggestions?

    Where did you put them?
These are not part of the sync process at all, as the manual tells you.  You should be importing them to your comptuer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

  • Can not find photo

While I am importing photos into iPhoto, i have a screen that keeps appearing saying "can not find photo img_2345.jpg" and will not import the photo that is on the screen. Am I importing photos wrong or do I have two pictures that are the same file name and will not import the new one?
Also, if i go into a event, I can see a small thumbnail of the picture, but when I click on it to view, it says it cannot find the picture. Is there an original location that I can find my imported photos?
    Thank you for your help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.
What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.
A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. If this then imports with no issue then you might consider rebuilding your library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

My hard drive crashed and lost everything.  New computer with ITunes...I can't get my IPhone to upload/sync to the computer

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
