Major File Resolution Bug in iTunes

I have repeatedly encountered what I consider a major problem iTunes has in resolving file names. Here's a recent problem that almost lost me a customer. I'm an audio engineer and I use iTune as an audio format converter. I had just finished an audiobook project spanning 6 CD's. It's in AIFF format. I wanted to send an MP3 version to my customer over FTP. I used iTunes for the conversion.
I cleared out my iTunes library, then dropped the original AIFF files for CD 1 into iTunes. I went into the import preferences and set iTunes up to create 128Kbps stereo MP3 files. I then selected all the files and started the conversion. This worked fine for CD 1.
After saving these MP3 files outside iTunes, I deleted all files from my library. I then dropped in the AIFF files for CD 2 and started a conversion of these new files. The files for each CD are named in the same manner: "Track x.aiff" where x is the track number.
Here's where the problem occurred. iTunes totally confused the first set of files from CD 1 with the new files from CD 2. Even though I had deleted the old CD 1 files, somehow iTunes still pointed to the originals or maybe the ones in the trash. When I did the MP3 conversion, I got CD 1 files, not CD 2.
To make sure this wasn't a mistake on my part, I repeated this several times on two different Mac's (a 1.25 GHz G4 iBook and a 2.0 GHz dual G5 workstation), both running Mac OS 10.4.8. I got the same problem in all attempts.
Bottom line, iTune has a real problem with two files of the same name and will likely get them confused.

Why didn't you import them as Disc 1 thru 6 of 6?
And why didn't you give them real file names?
I thought doing them one CD at a time would be less likely to confused iTunes.
The track names were generated automatically by an audio editing program I use. In fact, they were originally named like: "CD x Track y.aiff" When I first inported them into iTunes, it stripped off the "CD x" portion of the name.
After saving these MP3 files outside iTunes, I
deleted all files from my library.
How did you save them outside iTunes?
Select them in iTunes, then drag and drop into a folder.
And how did you delete them from the libary?
Select all, hit the delete button on the keyboard and then confirm that I want to move them to the trash.,
As an aside, why did you use 128 kbps?
If it's just speech (no music), you could use 32
mono/64 k stereo and the quality would be just fine.
It's mostly speech but there is some music. I wanted a little better quality that 32/64.

  • MAJOR Cover Art bugs in iTunes 7.x.x

Here are some interesting observations in discovering MAJOR Cover Art bugs in iTunes 7.x.x
    1. Importing CDs
If you import a CD, you must wait for complete import to finish in hopes that all songs will populate successfully with cover art. Even here, success is random.
If you request cover art during the import, there are mixed results.
iTunes should be smart enough to detect if any album exists with partial cover art in the library database, then those tracks with missing cover art will be automatically detected and updated.
    2. Missing Cover Art
    This occurs on 2 levels:
    a. iTunes Store may just not have cover art for some (older) albums
    b. iTunes Store does find the cover art, but it is not applied to *all tracks* on the album
    The workarounds bring mixed results.
I have resorted to the "Get Info" approach and pasted cover art to random album tracks where cover art was only partly applied by iTunes.
In other cases, I scanned in the CD cover and applied it to albums where iTunes found no cover art. I assumed this would be a one-time fix as I expected some minimal tweaking would be involved in managing cover art.
No such luck! Here is why iTunes cover art represents a MAJOR bug in version 7.x.x
Day 1: I spend many hours tweaking and fine-tuning the cover art, assuming iTunes will "save" all my work. I browse different albums/tracks and everything looks great!
Day 2: Looks like iTunes only "saved" some of this effort. Sure enough, certain complete albums and random tracks from other albums now show NO cover art! How frustrating!
    * * * Here is what is MORE DISTURBING about this Cover Art bug! * * *
I resort to thinking about more workarounds, and here are the results:
Hmmmm. Looks like if I paste in the Cover Art twice on certain album tracks, the Cover Art is now applied to that track. Meaning, if you do a "Get Info" on a track, you will see two pastes in the Cover Art tab, yes, you add the cover art twice, one cover next to the other so as to force that album track to get the cover art to attach. On the surface, this seemed to work, and all album tracks now seem populated with Cover Art and the effort appears "saved" when I revisit the album on Day 2.
But all is not what it appears. The trick of adding missing cover art twice, in the hopes that an album and/or certain random album tracks might adopting the cover art you are trying to assign will produce the following:
IT ACTUALLY AFFECTS THE AUDIO TRACK!!!!
Multiple attempts to add/fix cover art will ADD TO TRACK DURATION, such that when you play a track, the lead-in portion of the lyrics (say first 10 secs or so) will REPEAT in as many times as you tried to add the cover art!!!!
Thinking this might be a corrupt library database, I even deleted the database, started over, and while adding missing cover art, was able to reproduce the lyrics repeating on those tracks where the cover art was added (pasted) twice. You can HEAR and see the increased track duration in iTunes 7.x.x
MAJOR Cover Art bug!!! So you are not alone. And besides all the wasted hours trying to fix this, I say wait for iTunes 8.x
Please post and let me know if you have had the same experience with this cover art bug and similar workarounds.
C'mon Apple! PLEASE FIX THIS. What gives?

You can tell iTunes to "Clear Downloaded Artwork" to get rid of the wrong image.
Getting iTunes to select the correct image, especially for compilations can be quite frustrating. I've been slowly cleaning up some old artwork from when iTunes could not pull artwork from the iTunes Store for music from other sources. I've learned to check the album in question by using the iTunes Store link in iTunes - I figure if it goes right the the album I'm all set - Wrong! Today I'm doing battle with a bunch of "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection" albums. I can go through the album song by song and every one goes right to the correct album - but when I "Get Album Artwork" it still may not find the album or will pull in volume 2 instead of volume 1, etc. I've tried making sure my albums names are exact matches to the iTunes store with the same bad results.
It really seems like iTunes uses a different search method for artwork than for the iTunes Store link. At least Google has an image search...

  • Major Music app bugs w/ iTunes Match

I have iTunes Match and the Music app on my iPhone is almost un-usable.  Two major bugs are causing this:
    1.  Sometimes, a song will fail to play if it's not downloaded.  I'll have it on shuffle-all and a song will come up and the app will pause for a minute (as if it's building the cache, which is fine), but then the song will fail to play and the next track will begin.  If I go back to that song, it will immediately skip it.  The only way to play the song, is to download it manually (with the little cloud icon) and it will play fine.  HUGE pain in the butt when I'm driving.
    2.  More often than the first bug, a song will begin to play and when it get's to the 1-minute mark, it will skip to the next track for five seconds and then come back.  When it comes back to the original track the counter will start ticking, but no music will play.  The only way to get it to play again is to seek to before the 1 minute mark and hope it doesn't happen again (about 30% chance of getting through it).  If it doesn't happen at the 1 minute mark it will sometimes happen at the 2 or 3 minute mark (+/- 5 seconds).
    Is it just me?

Okay, so since I'm the only one experiencing this problem... is there something I'm doing wrong?  Is there a way to submit a bug report?

  • Is there a "replace files" bug in iTunes?  Plays fine in iTunes- not on Pod

Hello, all. Long story short, I'm re-ripping all my CDs at a higher bit rate. I'm going from 128 Kbps AAC to 192 Kbps AAC (variable bit rate.) Now I'm having issues.
So far, when iTunes asks me if I want to replace my existing files before I rip, I say "yes," but now I'm wondering if that's a big mistake due to a bug in iTunes. Why? Well, although the newly ripped album plays fine in iTunes and through my iPod (using it as a hard drive through the computer), once I disconnect my iPod and make it portable, the iPod will skip track #2 (for example) of a 9 track cd.
I've reset my iPod - no change.
I've deleted the album from my iPod and dragged it back on there - no change.
I'm trying to track down the root of the problem. The replacement file is obviously fine, and even plays in another media player. Someone said "replacing" files is bad because iTunes doesn't replace gapless playback information, and it uses old data for your newly sized files. Is that the root of my problem? Does iTunes have a "replace existing files" bug? It's the only thing I can think of. A solution would be to have iTunes re-analyze all my iTunes tracks for gapless playback and other data, but that doesn't seem to be an iTunes option. Any ideas? Re-ripping the cd is not an option. (But for all you whistle blowers, rest assured it was a cd I bought, so everything is legal.)
5th gen iPod with video   Windows XP   iTunes 7.1.1.5

Have you updated your iPod and iTunes sofware?
most cases, iTunes can play these high quality songs, which is meant for newer mobile devices like  iPhones, iPod Touch, nano and iPad, which the older iPod cant play, but only playable with iPod classic sofware version 2.0.4
most likely it is an incompatible song format, read this Apple support article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1334?viewlocale=en_USet
If  your iPod software is version 1.1.2, then you have to use lower quality format.
Can you select the problematic song, and Advance -> create iPod version

  • Bug? iTunes 10 doesn't remove files from Disk sometimes

    Hi all.
I think i figured out a bug in iTunes (10).
Sometimes, when i select a file from library and press cmd+backspace to delete a file from disk to put it in trash, iTunes won't put the selected file into the Trash. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt. Its going to be removed in the Library but its still on Filesystem so i can add it once again, and try it 2-3 times till its finally gets deleted.
    Any ideas?!
    EDIT:

OK ... help myself with asking a friend ...
Search for a few (approx. 20) files manually then iTunes found the rest itself!

  • So frustrated with the overwhelming number of bugs in iTunes for Windows...

I hate to come across as a Negative Nellie but this program is frustrating me so much!!!
Summing up the major burrs under my saddle:
Won't play ANY movie file. Just freezes and hangs.
Can't download updated apps without freezing and hanging.
Can't access iStore without (take a guess?) freezing and hanging.
Synching to my iphone or ipad causes itunes to hang for indeterminate periods of time. MOST times it will come back after a few minutes.
Often can't complete synch because of one of those 'undefined' errors.
iTunes has mysteriously dropped whole audiobooks, movies, ebooks, and albums out of my library, even though the files are still there.
iTunes can't rescan its own media library and add files back.
Don't even get me started on DRM. I can't play back movie files and TV episodes that I own  from my iTunes directory to my smart TV because iTunes won't recognise the TV and allow me to authorise it as a device I own. So I'm stuck playing back video that I've paid for through Quick Time or VLC media player on my Laptop instead of on my 1080p FullHD 55" TV!!!
I know my way around my PC, I've tried all the relevant tips on the Apple site to no avail. I've removed and reinstalled iTunes; no change. I've tried 'repairing' iTunes under add/remove programs in Control Panel; no change.
    I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Toshiba Sattelite P870.
I'm sick and tired of having to coddle this piece of flaky code to try and make it work. It's rubbish. It has NEVER worked properly under Windows and it seems to be getting WORSE every time it's updated.
I would really like to know if Apple are going to put things right with this program once and for all, or do I drop all my iDevices right now and switch to a Windows tablet and smartphone? I'm 3 generations Apple on my iPhone and 2 on my iPad. This is seriously getting to the point where I will walk away from Apple forever. What good is having the devices if the software that is SUPPOSED to integrate them all has more bugs than a bait store?

You can give feedback directly to the Apple folks if you like. (We're a user-to-user community, so we don't have any control over the bug-fixing process, and there's no guarantee that the relevant Apple folks will see this topic.) Here's a link to the iTunes product feedback form:

  • Some songs don't sync in one smartlist (possible BUG of itunes)

    Hi,
I have one smartlist with 200 songs in itunes. After I sync with my iphone and the same smartlist have 190 songs inside the phone.
The files listen ok in itunes and in the iphone (in other lists).
Can be a bug of itunes? Is not the first time that this success me.
Please, help! I don't know what I can do!
    Thank you!
PS sorry for my poor english, I'm spanish speker.

I checked "Match only checked items" in smartlist and "Sync only checked songs and videos" in iphone menu. However the problem persist.
I discovered what is the problem. The problem arises when you use the "comment" tag in the SmartList. In other SmartList that do not use the "comment" tag this problem does not happen.
One way to fix this is to delete the album and then add it again to itunes:
    1) delete the album that gives you problems with SmartList
    2) sync iphone
    3) add the album again.
    4) sync iphone again.
    5) Now the SmartList that uses the "comment" tag appear correctly on the smartlist in iphone.
And I insist that the SmartList in itunes always go well, it's just on the phone where don't work anytimes!
Incredible. I hope that apple will solve this bug. Besides, this does not happen with all the albums, only with some albums! So I have to watch each SmartList in iphone that the sync run well.
ahh what a horror! I have hundreds of lists!! I'll go crazy!

  • All of a sudden (video) files added to my iTunes library after a certain date aren't playable on other devices.

    hello!
All of a sudden I have a weird issue with playing video-files added to my iTunes library after a specific date.
This is the situation so far:
I encode the video for iTunes with the same settings for the last 3 years. I know these vids play on all my devices. AppleTV & iPad. All of a sudden videos added to my library after the 8th of september aren't playable on my AppleTV and iPad. I can play them directly in iTunes and by accessing them directly via the finder and quicktime.
    The following errors occur:
When I pull the video from iTunes on my AppleTV.. the video simply doesn't play.
When I pull the video from iTunes on my iPad I get a message that the file can't be found.
When I push the video from iTunes to the AppleTV using airplay I get a message that there has occured an error while connecting to the AirPlay-device "Apple TV". The necesary file could not be found. In addition when the AppleTV is switched off it doesn't turn on doing this, suggesting that there is something missing on my mac itself.
All the above errors aren't popping up when I choose a video that has been put in my library before the 9th of september. Then everything works as expected.
    This is what I tried:
Turning off and on home sharing on all devices including the mac.
Logging in wiht a different apple ID though using the same ID as before.
I created a new iTunes library and populated with a video that was added after the 8th of september and one that was added before the 9th of september. Surprisingly the older one played and not the newer one.. while they both used the same encoding settings. The new library was locally on my mac as my original library is on a NAS.
I encode my videos with Quicktime 7 Pro using the following settings:
H.264 (current frame rate, key-frames:automatic, re-order frames, automatic bitsize)
    Medium Quality
    Multi-pass
current resolution (which is always 1280 X 720)
    AAC sound
    44.100 kHz
    128kbps
I'm using the Mountain lion 10.8.2 and iTunes 10.7 Mountain lion got updated a few days after 19th of september and iTunes i think as well. Both versions were released after this issue seemed to pop up.
I also have two video-files encoded on the same day with the same settings that dragged into the iTunes library on the 9th of september. One works.. the other doesn't.
So I wonder if there is somebody out there that can tell me what might have happened here and how I could fix this issue.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Seraphiel07.
I have a very similar issue. Hardware involved:
Apple MacMini (Mid 2011) - OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple TV (3rd Generation). Home Sharing (access) enabled.
Apple MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2009). OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple iPad 2 (Wifi only). iOS 6
    Apple iPhone 4S. iOS 6
    All connected through:
Apple Time Capsule 8.0211n (4th Gen)
I have an iTunes library on the MacBook Pro, shared over "Home Sharing" and another (duplicate content, different library name) iTunes library on my MacMini, which is also accessed through the Apple TV.
All software is current (as of Sep 26th).
All movies are iTunes purchases. 80 in total.
All files are purchased (and home shared) under one account.
My last two iTunes purchases both HD movies on 09/17/2012 and 09/05/2012 refuse to appear on any device accessing either of the two Libraries over Home Sharing. It should be noted that every other movie (the other 78) all show up and play correctly. I therefore know it is not an issue with connectivity, otherwise I would see zero movies available.
    I have:
    1. Removed all content from each Library and re-added
    2. Upgraded the OS on the MacMini 10.8.2
    3. Tested viewing the two missing movies on other Apple devices and no luck.
    4. Turn home sharing on and off within iTunes and also on each device.
It would appear to me that the issue is with the files themselves, rather than the devices as different devices and different versions have been tested.
    All comments welcome.

  • 1080p download and playback bugs in iTunes 10.6 for Windows

There seems to be some bugs in iTunes 10.6 for Windows related to 1080p video.  According to Apple, the minimum specs for viewing 1080p video on a PC is:
To play 1080p HD video on a PC, you need a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor, 2GB of RAM, and an Intel GMA X4500HD, ATI Radeon HD, or NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS or better graphics processor.
My PC exceeds these specs (Intel i5-2500K 3.3GHz CPU, 8GB of RAM, AMD Radeon 7970 video card, 30" Apple Cinema Display).  The first bug appears when I go into the preferences setting and switch the download preference fom 720p to 1080p, which triggers a warning box that says:
This computer may not be able to play 1080p videos.  You can still download these videos for use on other devices.
That's odd but I press "OK" and downloaded the 1080p copy of a TV episode.  When I press play, another warning box popped up:
Video is too large.  The 1080p version of [show] is too large to play on this computer.  You can choose to play a smaller 720p version of this movie below.  This message will be dismissed in XX seconds.
The message gives you three options: PLAY SMALLER VERSION / OK / CANCEL.  If I select OK or simply let the timer run down, the 1080p video starts playing without any problems.  Anyone else seeing this?

Oh that clarifies things, I see what you mean.  The error message still confuses me because even your smaller Acer monitor matches the pixel resolution of the 1080p video - the video doesn't exceed the monitor's pixel ratio so it's not technically "too large" as the error message says.  The 1080p video should fill your Acer monitor edge to edge while leaving black borders on the top and bottom of your Samsung.  I think this is clearly a bug in iTunes.
I know what you mean about the movie opening up so that a portion of the image is off the screen but that sounds like an issue related to the default position of the window when you start a video.  The default position is such that a smaller size like the SD copy probably isn't cut off but that a larger video does get chopped until you change where videos open by default.  I can change the position simply closing the video while it's playing.  iTunes remembers the place on the screen where I closed the video and opens all videos at the spot afterwards.  Does that not work for you?

  • Bug in iTunes 9.0 Sound Check ?

In iTunes 8.x when you add a new song to iTunes (with Sound Check enabled)
iTunes adjusts or adds the "normalization information" ID3 tag for the song.

  • How to report a bug in iTunes 11?

How do I file a bug I found in iTunes 11?
Basically, the bug is the following:
    1) Order albums by classification (stars).
    2) Go to the first album (with most stars), opening that "album view" (containing the songs) below the album
    3) Change the classification of some songs, so that the stars in this album won't make it be in the first place anymore. Nothing will change in the UI, the album will continue in first place.
    4) Click in any song of this same album.
Result: a mess will happen. It will change the names of some musics and leave others, playing not the song you expect.

There is a formal bug reporting site, but it is a lot of work.  For your purposes you're probably just as well off using the feedback links others provided.

  • Major font substitution bug in Illustrator CS5

    Hi all,
This took me a good long time to track down, and since I didn't find any information here and Adobe technical support was no help, I figured I'd post the result. Happy new year.
Here was the problem. Working in CS5, intermittently we would get font reflow issues. In addition, when going to edit the type boxes with font reflow, we would get the message, "This text was created in a different version of Illustrator. Editing the text may cause some changes to your text layout. Basic formatting will not be affected. Do you want to continue?" Please note it says "different version" rather than "previous version". These files originated and stayed in Ilustrator CS5! If we hit OK, the type would snap back to the original state!!! Worse, if the type was copied and pasted, or anything in character or paragraph styles was edited, it would snap back without ANY warning. Now you see it... now you don't. Major problem in any print environment.
So here is what I found, and this is a CS5 exclusive. If you are working on a file and have a font set open which includes a font from one foundry, and then opened another document and activated a font set with an identical font from a different foundry (the original font closing), the kerning for the original document (in the background now) would be set to zero (rather than auto) and the font would reflow. If you didn't notice the reflow, and saved the file, well it would create the condition as described above. Of course it isn't ideal to have the font foundry change like that, but bottom line usually you could get away with it... maybe with one or two characters moving slightly. In the new CS5 world, Illustrator decides you really don't need ANY kerning pair information and then helpfully tells you it was a "different" version of Illustrator that caused this. Heh.
What a mess. Bottom line, make sure your font management application is set to throw warnings when conflicting fonts are opened, and most importantly, leave the original font open! Do not allow the new font to be opened until the conflict is resolved.
If your font management application does not have this option (Universal Type Server 1 did not), you better upgrade or forget about using Illustrator CS5 in a heavy production environment.
Adobe, this was a major change and a major headache. You have some explaining to do...

Confirmed this is being generated entirely in CS5. I opened the font Sabon. I created a text box. I pasted in some generic type I had just made in text edit. I changed the font to Sabon and the paragraph to justify. I saved and closed the document and closed Illustrator. I closed Sabon and opened Sabon from another foundry. I opened Illustrator and opened the document. All looked good. I duplicated the text box over and outlined the type. I went into the font manager and closed Sabon. I opened the original Sabon. DING! Type reflow. I saved as a second document. I copied the outlined type and closed the document. I opened the original document (note the original font is open). No problems. I paste the outlined type (type outlined with the wrong version of the font active) and it lands exactly in place. I open the second document. The type that reflowed now gives me the stupid message about another version of Illustrator screwing it up. I hit OK and the type reflows back to the way it is supposed to be.
This proves that the kerning changes weren't due to differences between the fonts. This proves that Illustrator CS5 has a MAJOR type engine bug that could easily spell disaster in production.
