• MAJOR FONT PROBLEM - GREEK FONTS - GREEK SYSTEM

Dear All
I own a G4 purchased from a local Apple Authorized reseller for greece Rainbow computers in order to be able to use Greek fonts. Recently upgraded to OSX Version 10.4.3
However I'm facing major font problems in applications such as Adobe Software i.e CS2
Greek fonts that actually work are very limited. For example in Illustrator only Myriad Pro and Lucida Grande function properly.
In Macromedia Freehand although a few more greek fonts work, they either disappear or become scrambled when I attempt to "Convert them to curves"!
This only applies to OSX Tiger. Panther seemed to be working fine for this, in Freehand.
I work as a graphic designer and it is very frustrating when I'm only limited to very few greek fonts even on a GREEK SYSTEM!!!
By the way: I tried all suggested methods on the forum such as: Greek keyboard layouts, verifying permissions, switching to System Greek Language, reinstalling Illustrator etc..
Is there anything else that i can do?
Pls help.. !

I own a G4 purchased from a local Apple Authorized
reseller for greece Rainbow computers in order to be
able to use Greek fonts.
Generally speaking, for problems with Rainbow's stuff you need to consult Rainbow. Apple itself does not produce a localized Greek system or the special add-ons that Rainbow provides to let you use non-Unicode Greek with older apps.
However I'm facing major font problems in
applications such as Adobe Software i.e CS2
Greek fonts that actually work are very limited. For
example in Illustrator only Myriad Pro and Lucida
Grande function properly.
For an app like this you probably need to use Unicode Greek fonts. Those that come with Tiger are Lucida Grande, Helvetica, and Times. If you have MS Office 2004, you can also use Arial and Times New Roman and maybe Verdana from that app. Plus modern Adobe fonts like Myriad or Minion Pro. I suspect that legacy non-Unicode fonts will not work.
In Macromedia Freehand although a few more greek
fonts work, they either disappear or become scrambled
when I attempt to "Convert them to curves"!
I think Freehand is non-Uncode and probably needs the older fonts.
For problems with Adobe and Macromedia apps, you might also want to ask in their forums:

• Major Font Problems in Snow Leopard!

Snow Leopard creates serious font problems in Apple software (iWeb & Keynote in particular) but no problems whatsoever that I've found in any Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop). What it's doing is screwing up the line spacing... essentially adding a lot of "leading" for some fonts, reducing it for others. Completely screws up my presentations and web pages. Please HELP!!!

I am also having this exact issue. I've been using a large set of mandatory fonts that our prepress production department uses. There are 1000 fonts we always have installed. We've all been using them since 1998 with no issues at all all the way through Leopard. We have tens of thousands of documents that use these fonts, so getting rid of some is NOT a solution for me.
There have been no problems up until now.
After installing Snow Leopard, and even after upgrading it to 10.6.1, there are many fonts missing when these documents are opened in QuarkXPress. We've been using Quark 3.3, 4, 5, 6, all the way through 8.1 with no issues with these fonts until now.
Currently we're running Leopard, and QuarkXPress 8.1 with no font issues. I was forced to revert my machine back to Leopard after installing Snow Leopard yesterday, because of these seemingly unresolvable font issues.
In Snow Leopard, the fonts we've been using are indeed left in the Fonts folder untouched, but Snow Leopard doesn't seem to list many of the Bitstream brand Postscript fonts in our collection. Quark thinks they are missing. We even tried taking a fresh Font folder from one of our Leopard machines and replaced the Snow Leopard Fonts folder with it... no difference.
We tried emptying all caches, reinstalling Quark 8, reloading the fonts... nothing works except reverting the whole system back to Leopard.
Please help. We'd love to use Snow Leopard, as it does appear a lot faster than Leopard. But, unless this font issue is fixed, we'll never be able to upgrade again, as we are formally locked in to using our current font set.

• How to uninstall Snow Leopard? major font problems in iWork, iLife

All iWork and iLife apps have shocking font problems... so much so that I need to uninstall Snow Leopard and wait for Apple to sort it out. Does anyone know the best way? And how is it possible that these problems are occurring with Apple's inhouse software? Other stuff seems to be working OK so far for the most part. For a bit more detail on my problems, including sample images:

Snow lizard cost me $27.000.00 in unusable fonts. We installed snow lizards (what I'm calling it now) and lost 934 fonts. Say 40 were bad fonts and 896 were type 1 postscript. When I explained to the tech person how big this was to the print community, he had no clue. - I'm still waiting to hear back. I have a case number but now I read from another post they knew Snow Lizard would do this. At 30.00 per font that is almost $27,000 to replace what they thought wasn't important. But in the print world of design this is huge. Every layout and ad that needs an update - which take a few minutes is a whole rework. They have no clue what business a mac computer is in or they don't see us as important.
I did find if I load those fonts or the font missing into the InDesign font folder I can get the old ad to make it to pdf. But photoshop and illustrator, I'm screwed. And if I didn't outline the type in illustrator - it's gone. I asked the tech guy if I can go back, and undo this slimy lizard and he said probably not if we do backups. We do backups every hour - this is the print business. I feel forsaken. I've been with apple for so many years.

• ECL Viewer 7.0 patch 3 DXN file font problem  HELP ME!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone!
During display og .DXN files in ECL Viewer the problem window pops up
The problem is that program does not see  isocp.shx and simplex.shx files
These files holds font data for CAD files
I downloaded these files from internet
The question is
How to instal it to be visible for ECL Viewer??
I got also another problem
ECL Viewer does not hold user settings for colors
can somebody help me these issues??
All Best
Damian Radomski

Hi Damian,
As a solution you can think of  the possibility to use an external DXN Viewer. Therefore you have to maintain the parameter %AUTO% in transaction DC30 for you DXN Workstation application. This parameter will call the external viewer
which is maintained in the Windows folder options for format DXN.
ECL Viewer does not hold user settings for colors
Please explain this issue in detail

• Major Receiver Problems-  HELP!

I got my first Nike Plus kit for my 2nd Generation Nano. I loved it the two runs that it worked then it would not recognize the receiver. I ordered a new kit and still had the same problem so I ordered a brand new Nano. It worked for a couple of runs and then would not recognize the receiver again. I ordered a 3rd kit which worked fine for about 40 miles and today it will not recognize the receiver again. I really, really want this technology to work because I love it but I am really getting frustrated since I am on my 2nd Nano and 3rd kit. I am not rough with gear. Could I just be the most unlucky person in the world that keeps buying defective equipment? Any advice would be very helpful.

I have has really major problems this week as well. I use a 3rd gen nano and for 10 runs my sport kit worked really well. I did a 5k race on Sunday and the ipod could not find my sensor. I played around with it and got it work after about 10 attempts (after my race, of course). I thought I was all set when I went on my run today. It was working fine, then I looked down at my ipod and it said I had only run .3 miles when I gone over one mile. I started a new workout and it did the same thing twenty minutes later. Then it could not find the sensor. I am really excited about this product and want it to work. The support hotline was closed after my run. I hope they send me a new one and that works well.

• FONT PROBLEM - help help

I don't know what exactly happenned. I installed some fonts (which is probably the problem) from some set that I got from a "friend".
Then some websites and applications that displayed with no problem before, all of a sudden had these crazy fonts that I could barely read.
I searched the fonts in Fontbook found the font that I thought was showing up and uninstalled it. Then it defaulted to some other font.
How do I set things right?
Can I just delete all the fonts and reinstall the base intel fonts?
MACPRO   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

How did you 'install' these fonts? Did you use FontBook?
Otherwise, as I'm sure you've learned, messing with fonts directly through the folder heirarchy is not a good idea. More than likely, you've either removed, or replaced some system-required fonts unknowingly; hence the 'crazy screen'.
Do you remember which Fonts folder you accessed? (There are 3!)
1. Your User level fonts: user/Library/Fonts
2. Library/Fonts
3. System/Library/Fonts
In the future, your safest bet (if you're not a font savvy person) is to only access your User level Fonts folder, and using FontBook. Messing with the other two Font folders will likely cause you issues. I'm guessing it was the System/Library/Fonts folder you've upset. Trying to delete all fonts will probably cause your machine to go even crazier b/c you need a specific amount of fonts to run the OS.
Do a search for System Fonts OS X and print it out. Then compare them to the ones in your existing Fonts folders. Remove all others that aren't listed and restart.
One caveat is that there are also a handful of other fonts that are installed by specific applications (like Adobe Illustrator, for example). They are needed to display the menus in those applications properly. This may or may not be an issue as sometimes they are installed in yet another separate folder, like Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts ... So it might be ok.
Best of luck!

• Major font problems- can you reinstall only the sytem fonts?

I installed Adobe Font Folio last night (so far 500+ fonts) and this afternoon several webpages and the address book and the calendar in Dashboard have changed to a numeric/subscript font. I have disabled all fonts in Font Book that look anything like the weird font, repaired the permissions in the Disk Utility, and now am at a lost on what to do next!
Here is an example:

• Major font problems suddenly

this has happened to me on and off before, but always went away. Suddenly almost all my fonts on my comp. seem like they are bolder/bigger than normal. This happened out of the blue, I didnt change anything. In the Finder, in all different programs, on the net. Fonts that were once small seem like they have been bolded even brighter in some cases. Its the wierdest thing. I tried messing with font smoothing. If I basically turn it off the fonts seem better cause their not smooth. but i never changed any setting and this just happened. any ideas?

Check with your Universal Access System Preference to see if you have activated something via a keystroke combination by error.

• Major graphics problem - help!

Over the past month or so I have begun to notice an intermittent issue with my graphics where multiple vertical lines of different and changing colors appear to "rain" all over my desktop. I've tried different user accounts, display settings to no avail.
Another user had this problem about a year ago and posted a picture nearly identical to my own problem: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4133857#4133857
In this thread the user traces his problem to the graphics hardware, which he was trying to replace, but doesn't say whether or not that resolved his issue.
I ran an extensive hardware diagnostic at the local Apple store which found no problems with the graphics card. The guy there offered to replace the card for $350.
So now I have a conundrum. I'm planning to replace this system in the near future - but what do I do with this powermac? It has 5.5 GB RAM and has performed nearly flawlessly for over four years. Can I sell it in good conscience? What more can I do to resolve this problem?

Hi Eric Beyer-
When you can take a screenshot of the problem it is generally the graphics card.
If you take a screen shot while the problem is happening, and then look at it when the picture is normal, and you see the problem that would be it.
Have you opened it and looked for dust build-up?

• IPod Glue Major Glue Problem, HELP

Hey guys!
Recently after I bought my iPod Nano 6th gen, I got a case for it, got all my songs on it, awesome! But there's more. See I'm a perinoid guy, and all the cases left the back metal clip naked, and dropping the iPod on that section could cause some shock wave damage to the iPod, and sratch the back up pretty bad.
So stupid me went and grabbed a few pieces of small rubber and glued the on to the back with elmers all purpose glue stick. It's a living nightmare. The whole thing is sticky, the clip, the case, the iPod. I let it sit for 3 days and its got that oily feeling to it because of the glue anywhere you touch it.
Does anyone know how to properly clean this up, WITHOUT, harming the iPod? Please give any sugestioins!
Thanks,

• FCPX crashing when text inspector open, I suspect a font problem. Help!

I have encountered a problem where FCPX will crash whenever text propertys should show in the inspector tab (Text can be edited when the inspector is closed).
After searching google, this appears to be a common problem. Everyone seems to say the symptoms indicate a font problem, which I suspected. However after using font book to verify my fonts, getting rid of 3rd party installed fonts and then messing up my fonts library
terribly (still trying to figure out what exactly I did). I seem to have no luck.
Has a solution be discovered yet? I need to be able to change my font settings not just edit text! Please help!

Isn't that just the way things work. After working on this problem for many hours and several days I post here and within a few more hours it works itself out. <embarrassed>
I used font book to turn off all fonts but the ones the OS needs to run, and it turns out somehow I ended up with duplicates of those ones. After a struggle to get rid of the duplicates I also deleted FXPs preference files. Now I can edit the text in the properties/info pane again!

• MAJOR EXPORT PROBLEMS! PLEASE HELP!

Hello. I hope everyone had a nice holiday. I'll try to be brief. I'm having a horrible problem with exporting my films.  I work on a PC. To me, that shouldn't matter, but here's what's been happening.  I shoot my films at 23.976 frames on the 5DMII and the 7D.  My film got into a film festival. They asked for a 720p mp4 file. OK, no problem. I went under H.264, I exported an HD File, with 23.976 frame rate and I checked both boxes for Max Render and I set a 2-pass. I exported and when I played the vid back through Windows Media Player, it felt fine.
BUT, at the festival this past weekend, I was horrified to discover that my film, and no other films, was having a major sound problem. The audio was about half a second ahead of the footage, so they kind of looked like they were speaking correctly, but their dialogue would finish right before their mouths would. Super embarrassing. All I noted when I saw the tech booth was that they were using a mac laptop hooked to the projector, so I assume maybe it was quicktime they were running? Also, I believe they put all of the vids together as one file so it would run together as one block, but still, I believe most of the other films were shot at 23.976 frames as well, so that shouldn't matter.
I went home, thinking maybe I just wasn't being diligent enough and I needed to really look at the sound. Maybe it was off. But I keep all of the temp tracks, the sound from the dslr, on track 1 and then just mute it. I unmuted and played both tracks, and there's no difference. No echo, no weird delays, they're both perfectly synched up.
I've been having this problem for a long time but this was the first time that I REALLY could see the problem, probably because it was on such a big screen. Just my opinion, but I've found that most festivals are running MAC software and it seems like the vids I export seem to have an audio problem being played through mac programs. Another instance, briefly. I did a screening for a feature I edited. I exported an HD mp4 and put it on a friends MAC. The sound was off when we pre-screened it. I have a PC Toshiba laptop, I ran the vid through windows media player, and it felt much better, so we screened using my laptop and it went fine. But what does that mean?
Has anyone else had this problem? It's not just festivals too. I have a subscription with Vimeo, but every short film that I put up there has some kind of an audio drift problem. It's always minor so some people see it and some people don't, but I'm certain the vids are fine on my timeline. Do I need to export using something else? A different setting? As a quicktime vid? That last question seems kooky since any tutorial I've seen is usually wanting h.264, so I just don't know.
Please let me know if there's anything I can try or if you just have an opinion. Thanks very much.

im sorry i cant seem to start a new topic PLEASE HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPP

• Arial Font problems in old pdfs!  {Pics inside}

Hello all.
Here is the problem as best I can explain it!
I have pdf files that were origanally created on a Mac (I am using Win 7) using Arial Narrow font family.  I read all the issues posted
on the Arial Narrow font problems but none have solved the problem.  Below are screen shots of what I think might be the cause.
When I look at the properties in Acrobat for the pdf in question here is what fonts show up.
The only font that displays correctly is Arial-Black true type font.  The Type1 ArialNarrow displays
as shown in the picture below. One other thing to note:  Notice how ArialNarrow is all one word?
Is that maybe why Illustrator is having a problem with it?  I have tried to find it with no luck.
When opened in Illustrator CS2 this is what is displayed.
The fonts are in my fonts directory both in Windows and Illustrator.  I even loaded the older 2.35
version that is mentioned all over the net.
The problem is that I have hunderds of these documents some with over 200 pages each.  I have messed
with this for several days now and am at a loss as to what to do next.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! ! !
Mark

Substituting fonts in Illustrator using Type>Find font is not going to work.
If you look at the screenshots you'll see the fonts are CID fonts with custom encoding. The fonts on Marks Computer probably have ANSI encoding (i.e. standard western character set) and the character maps will not match. As a result you will not get legible text but just squares or other things (diamonds, dots etc.)
Mark sent me a file to look at and below is what I wrote in a direct e-mail to him.
<quote>
The problem is that the PDF was made directly from InDesign, which converts the fonts to CID fonts (normally used for Asian fonts like Chinese, Japanese and Korean) and in doing so it created a character map (encoding) that is not compatible with our regular fonts which use the Western Character set (ANSI encoding). Which explains why replacing the embedded font with one on your system doesn't work.
There is some info on the Adobe website at the following links:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329611.html
http://indesignsecrets.com/cid-identity-h-fonts-are-back.php
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/324995
<end quote>
The CID charachter problem also exists in Acrobat 7 and 8, but got solved in Acrobat 9.
The only thing that worked to get a PDF with readable and editable text was to use an OCR program (Abby FineReader in my case, but Omnipage can do the same) to process the PDF and in doing so the embedded fonts were basically OCR'ed using system fonts and then saving it again as a PDF had basically the same effect as replacing the embedded fonts by system fonts. After that opening the PDF in Illustrator gave normal text and the file could be edited. Though Serif DrawPlus did a better job in opening the PDF as an editable file.
In this case the OCR route is an option because the PDF file contained a table. If it had been a drawing the OCR option might be less useful depending on how the OCR software would handle the drawing part, unless getting the text out of the PDF and reinsert it into the drawing would be sufficient.
Maybe the above info is of some use for those who are dealing with the same problem.

After Int Install OS10.5.8 on PowerPC G4 having major system problems (created user to verify) CS4 apps go non responsive

Ok no difference, I don't get any drive errors that seem significant or numerous, sometimes I don't get any at all, the disk always verifies and I haven't had to run a repair on it yet. I've gotton one or two drive errors, I'll save them next time I run either DU or DW.... however with permissions, there are a lot and they all fix (except: see below: Last 3: ACL errors are always there) but as I keep having to do force quits and system re boots they keep coming back; posted them below IDK if this will help you to help me, LOL... but figured it couldn't hurt, the ones below are re-occuring I know i've seen them b4. . .  Don't know if this makes a difference but on initial install I had several font conflicts w/system fonts, I renamed suitcases and that error message hasn't come back . . . but do you think this could be a font issue . . . I have like 12,000 fonts of which a couple hundred are ususally always active . . . IDK it doesn't make sense to me it would be, but you never know... just a shot in the dark
I also saved my last PS crash report and it was like 100 Pages long, I've never seen one that long, I make a pdf of it and post link to my idisk, if its something that you can interpet.
