MAJOR HASSLES WITH MY iMac G5

I have just handed my old iMac G5 to my wife after having purchased myself a new iMac. I've used Macs for 20+ years and the problem she's now having with my old iMac is the very first time I've encountered any hassles at all with Macs.
I am having major issues even booting the iMac. On the rare occasions it gets passed the Apple icon it now encounters a gray screen telling me to restart. And several times it will post a message eg:
System Failure: cpu=0; code=00000009 (Invalid pmap)
Latest crash info for cpu 0:
Exception state (sv=0x3661d000)
PC=0x000A7FD0; MSR=0x02003000; DAR=0xFFFC521; DSIR=0x00200000; LR=0x000A7F4C; R1=0xFC008091; XCP=0x00000098 (System Failure)
backtrace terminated - unaligned frame address: 0xFC008091
and it goes on for quite a few more lines.
Can anyone suggest a plan of action? Offer ideas as to what is suddenly going on?

Hey there.
I know I should probably post elsewhere, however, I'm short on time for a project. I've got my 17" G4 powerbook. Lately, I've been getting the dreaded black "you must restart your computer..." screen. I changed the HD several months ago, and have had no problems. Would formatting the drive to anything? I ran Disc utilities from the install disc, same deal. I tried to do the software upgrades to see if that might be something, but it goes to the black screen to quick. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help, and sorry for short stepping. Thanks, Rich

  • Major trouble with 20" imac hd might be done for

A few days ago my iMac froze so i powered it down and started it back up. It got to the gray screen with the apple and spinner and sat there all night. I was able to start holding option and get on the windows side but i couldn't get on the mac side. I booted from the cd and tried to verify the hd but disk utility kept spinning looking for a hd to verify. I tried to do an archive and install and when it got to select location it just kept spinning looking fo a hd. I assumed it was doing this because i was using a tiger disc and i have leopard on my imac. The leopard disc i have is an upgrade dvd so i borrowed a friends disc but now i can't boot from the disc and when i hold option the mouse cursor shows up but nothing to select to boot from. I really need help as my phone support is up and my warranty is up in 12 days. Thank you for any help.

That is difficult to say, it depends on how badly the machine is botched. If it's software only then I would think it's fixable in-store however I can't be certain of this. If it's hardware then it will probably be sent out. At any rate you will be without your machine for awhile. You could attempt to fix it yourself however considering the results you have so far I would not recommend this. You have a warranty use it!

  • Major issues with my iMac- crashes and errors

In the past 2 weeks I have had multiple issues with my computer. 3 times the OS has crashed- twice I had to pull the plug to get it to do anything. I can't open Photoshop. I can't print. Adobe Bridge keeps crashing. I have to turn Airport off/on about once an hour because the internet stops working. This is my first Mac and I've had it about a year and a half, so I don't know a lot about the system. Most of my work is stored on an external hard drive and I have 292.32 GB available. I am looking for suggestions to get running normally agian because I really can't lose several days of working by taking this to an Apple store (45 minutes away). Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

It's good to hear that repairing permissions helped resolve the issue. Your Mac logs a lot of data about how the system is performing. Of particular interest is the CrashReporter logs that can be viewed by launching the 'console' application which can be found in the applications/utilities folder. In the left column you can open up the ~/Library/Logs where you will see then see the CrashReporter log. Open it up and you will probably find a number of crash reporter entries which may yield clues. It may be necessary to provide more details from the logs and let some of the expert users provide suggestions. You may find that some of your software is not up to date.
This CNET article provides an overview of the Crash Reporter:

  • Tap to click not working properly in Mountain Lion. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

The tap to click does not work with mountain lion as it did before the mountain lion install. I purchased a brand new imac in August of 2011 and got a wireless keyboard and selected the wireless trackpad instead of a mouse.  The trackpad worked wonderful pre upgrade with tap to click. Now after the install of the newest beast, I have to actually press the trackpad rather than a slight tap. I have carpel tunnel and this is causing great stress upon my hand. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

Perhaps, I was not clear enough.
I have an imac purchased in Aug. 2011 which came with Lion 10.6 (two uprades before mountain lion)
Recently, I just purchased a macbook pro retina with Mountain Lion
On my imac, my settings allowed me to "tap to click" everything EXCEPT the initial log in at the star up of my imac, again running Lion 10.6
On my macbook pro retina which has Mountain Lion, I set up the "tap to click" option, but notice that a "hard" click was neccessary when trying to click things. I thought this was a macbook thing (my first one) so I went and upgraded my imac to Mountain LIon, BIG MISTAKE! Now both my imac AND my macbook only have limited "tap to click" options. Before mountain lion I could "tap" to highlight and select text, tap and drag, and many other thiings that Mountain Lion has disabled.
I am truly surprised that no one has noticed this MAJOR issue.
Is there a way to uninstall this update, similar to how on a PC you can go back to a restore point.
On another note even the way PREVIEW has changed is less user friendly, there used to be icons on the bottom right corner of the screen, now I have to double tap and select the option I would like to switch between contacts and thumbnails. This is really annoying and is causing me time when reviewing files.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I did go to system preferences -> trackpad -> select tap to click
In fact almost all of the trackpad functions have been selected.

  • How can I get Apple to replace my rev a with isight imac?

I'm on my second major repair of my Imac rev a in less than a year. So many horror stories here. How hard is it to get Apple to replace my computer with one that one break down all the time? Any advice would be helpful.
    Roxie

I am currently trying my hardest to get a replacement machine. I have had several repairs on my iMac, (6 trips to the apple store!!) but they have told me that my repairs were not major enough to warrant a new machine. I am sending letters and documentation to as many people in customer relations as possible.
Right now my computer is getting repaired. Again.
    Good luck.

  • 10.9.3 = major problem with fast user switching

I've found a major problem with the 10.9.3 update with my 27" iMac, you probably won't see it if your on a laptop. I did all the updates in past few days i.e., 10.9.3 combo update, iTunes 11.2.1.
Afterward I noticed a bug when Fast User Switching i.e. FUS. I have 5 accounts but the bug can be replicated with only 2.
I login to userA  have some windows open but you can just open a Finder window. Now make the window at least half the with of the screen and move it to the right side of the screen. Then login in to userB and setup the windows the same way as userA. Now FUS to userA and then back to userB. You will notice that the Finder window has been moved to the upper left corner of the screen. This problem happened's to all user accounts you login to except the first account you logged into.
Since I didn't know what update caused the problem I had to use Time Machine to revert to my last version of 10.9.2. I then double checked the for the bug and sure enough everything was working fine. I now was going to install one update at a time and to see which one was causing the bug. So I installed 10.9.3 first and found the bug immediately.
I now know what's happening. When the switch occurs the screen is resized to about the equivalent of a 13" MBP. At this point the windows that fall some ware outside that size get moved to the upper left corner and resized. Then the screen resizes to normal but it's too late, all the window have moved and been resized to fit the 13" screen size.
You can reproduce this effect by going to System Preferences and selecting Display and then select the Scaled radio button. No select the smallest size, say, 1280 x 720. Now select the Best for display radio button again. You will now see all the windows you have open that were too big no moved and resized to the upper left corner. I know why the Mac moves the windows, it's so you don't have any windows stuck off screen.
Now when I say 13" it could be some other size but it's about that size give or take.

Yes, it's when you user Fast User Switching.
Here's snapshot before the screen resized. Ignore the window in the lower right, I moved it from the upper left before taking the screen shot.
I hate to say it but I'm glad I'm not the only one with this bug.

  • Can i create a disk partition and install SL onto it from my disks I got with my iMac

I want to start learning how to use the Terminal and how to start inputting and outputting data via the Terminal.  I thought that I could create a small partition on my hard drive and then install Snow Leopard onto that partition (so that while I was learning how to use Terminal commands I would not wreck anything.)
It then occurred to me that by doing this I would also learn how to install OS X.
    Can I do this?
Does the disks I got with my iMac have a limited number of installs?  Because if they do I don't want to use them up in case I have to reinstall at any point in the future.
Do those disks have a full version of OS X Snow Leopard on them, or are they just for repairing the version on my system?
If I was to create a partition, when I delete that partition will I automatically get back the space?
Is what I want to do hard?
Can someone please give me some guidance before I begin doing this?
    Many thanks
    Jason

The OS X Install Disc that came with your computer is just that a full licensed copy of OS X for your system, it can be installed as many times as you would like but it will ONLY work on your machine. The only limitation to those discs that I'm aware of is they are machine specific.
My suggestion would be to get an external HD and use the Install Disc to install OS X on the external. Don't get a cheap USB drive, get the fastest drive (at the moment that would be Firewire 800) you can get. Drives I'd recommend are Lacie Quadra d2 series, G-Tech G-Series and OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series. This would be a much wiser strategy than partitioning  your internal drive, that way if you real create a major mess it won't affect your internal HD.

  • Periodic IP Conflict with my iMac since 5.1 update

    Hi,
Ever since I updated my Apple TV 3 with iOS 5.1, the ATV regularly ends up sharing an IP address with my iMac (2007) with Snow leopard. This never occured before the update. Both are set up with automatically assigned IPs through DHCP. I can fix the issue by rebooting my 2Wire modem but the issue reoccurs, usually about 2 days later.
I did at one point assign static IP addresses to all devices on the network but this did not stop the problem from reoccuring as it seems the Apple TV did not stick to the assigned IP.
Aside from the iOS update, I did add a second iTunes account to the ATV as well.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Anyone know how I can solve it?
    Cheers

I just noticed the same problem on my Apple TV...never had this problem bf but now I've seen this I realize it started after the update here too....Apple seems to be more of a hassle these days than not....I thought updates were supposed to fix problems not create them but it seems most updates the past year only create issues...sorry I don't have an answer for you and I'm just as annoyed...it's an expensive product to not be able to use for what I use it for mostly...Get off your rear apple and start making our lives easier or I'll go another route when buying products bc I can't deal with these constant issues

  • Major bug with iCloud restore and the multitasking menu that compromises privacy.

    Hello there,
I very rarely post on these forums but I’ve discovered what I think is a pretty serious bug. I’ve already sent this as feedback to apple but id be interested to know if anybody else is able to re-create it or has already stumbled across the problem.
I have been able to recreate this problem twice by creating an icloud backup on an iPhone 6 (iOS 8.0) and restoring to an iphone 6 (iOS 8.0).
The problem has to do with the multitasking snapshots that appear after double clicking the home button. On the iPhone it is my understanding that there can be up to 3 ‘different’ snapshots based on when the home button is double clicked and the orientation of an app:
    a) The first is when you have an app open in portrait mode and then close it or click the home button to exit. Double clicking the home button from the home screen will then display the multitasking menu including a portrait snapshot of what was last seen in that app.
    b) The next is when you're in an app that supports landscape mode and double click the home button whilst ‘in app.’ This displays a multitasking menu with landscape snapshots showing what was last seen when apps were open in landscape (note that if apps can only be shown in portrait than this is the image that will be shown and it will appear sideways).
    c) Finally, there is the case when you have an app open in landscape and then directly close it or press the home button, and then double press the home button. This displays a multitasking menu with portrait snapshots; however, to my knowledge these snapshots never change (they will not show the last snapshot from when the app was last open in portrait mode).
The bug is that after restoring from iCloud, the snapshot as described in ‘C’ scenario gets set to whatever was in the icloud backup for scenario ‘A.’ Because this snapshot cannot be changed it is a major bug if for instance you have personal information in the snapshot. In my case, I have my bank statement permanently appear in the snapshot for scenario C.
What’s more, if I have safari is in landscape and then close it; then at some point I open the multitasking bar before opening safari again in portrait mode; then the snapshot flashes up in the actual app for around 1-2 second before disappearing.
At the moment the only solution I can see is to setup my iPhone as new but this will be a major hassle and lose all my settings etc.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that I think this is a bug across all ios devices with multitasking; however, with the ipads there is an easy solution because you are able to orientate the home screen in multiple ways. This means its possible to update the snapshots in a way that you can’t do on the iPhone because the home screen is locked to portrait.

so to clarify, it appears that the multitasking snapshot for the following scenario will not update: open safari and turn to landscape, exit safari using home button or multitasking bar, then double press home button. That snapshot that appears for safari doesn't ever seem to refresh. Whatever is there is stuck there and whats more it will always pop up in the actual browser for 1-2 secs the next time safari is opened after completing those steps. Im not sure when the snapshot is initially created - it must be the first ever time you close safari but as I said in my post, it also appears to be stored in iCloud backups. So I've tried:
    a) hard resetting
    b) clearing safari cache and history
    c) resetting all settings
    d) restoring from iCloud (as mentioned)
    e) opening and closing closing safari using the multitasking menu (both the landscape multitasking menu that appears when you're actually in safari in landscape mode, and the multitasking menu that appear when you double press the home button on the home screen).
    f) same as above except closing all tbs open in safari before then exiting.

  • IMac isn't loading a specific website (can't connect to that server), regardless of browser, though the same website will load on other computers on same network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?

Our iMac isn't loading a specific website (we get a message saying it can't connect to that specific server), regardless of browser (I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox). However, the same website, which is for a major medical provider, loads without any issue on our other computers on the same wireless network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings? All other websites seem to be loading without issue on the iMac.

... Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?
Possibly. Make sure you are not using a proxy server. Look in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > "Change Settings..." This will take you to the applicable Network Preferences. Make sure that nothing is selected in the "select a protocol to configure" list. It should look like this:
    Still not working?
Locate your Terminal app. It is in your Utilities folder. Open Terminal.
In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
This will produce a list of all your account login items.
While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.
Post the results of the above.

  • Uneven brightness/contrast with new iMac 20" display

Yesterday I rec'd a new Core 2 Duo 20" iMac and there is a major issue with the screen. At the bottom, its contrast and brightness are fine, but at the top it has gradually lost its brightness and contrast. The menu bar looks "dingy". Is this a software (settings) issue or a defective LCD? My iMac G5 20" does not have this problem.
    Thanks,
    Tony

It seems I have a similar problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=678070&tstart=0), but I bought mi iMac online, on the Apple Store.
Should contact Apple by phone? And... then?

  • Can anyone recommend a printer that works well with the IMAC?

I am new to the Mac world and bought an IMAC with Iphoto08. My main reason was for printing photos and using the great graphics of an IMAC. But, I have no printer as of yet because I don't know which printer would work best with the IMAC. Please helppppppp

    Nikki,
    click on this Epson link:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oi d=63059194
The 88+ is a very good inexpensive printer ..... it is temporarily "out of stock", but press the "Notify Me" button on the web page. You will also need a printer cable sold separately, but which Epson lists when you are able to order the printer.
Also check their ink jet photo-type print papers. (I do not work for Epson .... but I've used their products for years and never had any problems). I know of two instances where the printers were duds, but Customer Service replaced them without a hassle.

  • Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up?

Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up? And how should I proceed??
Here is my story. I have moved roughly 15,000 photos from 7 computers (4 PCs and 3 Macs - basically everyone's computer in the family) onto one external hard drive. The photos were taken by many different digital cameras, are sparsely labeled, and have the most random names and folders. There are a LOT of duplicates. MY MISSION - label and back them up.
The way I normally deal with photos/DATA is this: I plug my camera into my Mac and immediately think about organizing and backing them up. With "Preview" I look at photos (and decide which one I like), create a folder called "where-ever I took these photos" and drag them into that folder. The problem with Iphoto is that you have no ability to control folders, unlike many other applications.
For example, in Itunes you can rename an artist, or even an album, and it will automatically appear in an updated folder. If you alter a photo in Photoshop, it makes you save it is a new file. In Iphoto you cannot make the same "root level" changes without making duplicates. From what I understand, you can place photos into an Album and then export that album (which makes duplicates). Iphoto will rename each duplicate file and then place it in the correct folder. The problem here is I have no idea where the original is to delete it.
Basically I want to create folders called "Trip to Italy 2003" or "Rachel's Wedding" and place all the photos associated with that event in those folders. The problem I run into is that I have a bunch of duplicates. I have heard of a program called Duplicate Annihilator which has gotten favorable reviews. If I import them into Iphoto all the photos are placed in random named folders. I say random because some of the photos were taken on cameras that didn't have the date set correctly. Hence some of my photos will appear in a labyrinth of folders called "Modified / 2001 / Roll 17 / DCM482 / Image25874654.jpg"
I am totally willing to wipe my Iphoto library clean and start again if there is a way to organize the photos as described above. Eventually I will take these folders and save them on a data DVD.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
    Gary

You do not need to delve into the folders within the iPhoto Library via the finder to access any photo. That is all done within iPhoto itself. If you need a photo for use outside of iPhoto read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access. iPhoto is a DAM application - Digital Asset Management, not a folder manager. There's a big difference. You can use keywords, album and smart albums to organize your photos.
If you still have the original files you might consider what I do. I rename each file with the date it was taken using the international date format: YYYY-MM-DD-001.jpg. You can download the demo version ofMedia Expression and automatically rename each folder of photos with the EXIF date and a sequential number. This makes chronological searching and sorting much easier both in iPhoto and the Finder.
If you want to not only manage the photos but the folders then Expression Media will let you do both. It will let you rename files after being imported into a catalog, move them between folders, add ITPC metadata to the files, create virtual albums called Supplemental categories, and much, much more. I use it as my primary DAM and iPhoto for special projects like books, slideshows, calendars, etc.
