Major heat issues with first gen Macbook Pro

It sure seems like I should be able to find an easy answer for this, but I can't.
I have (I believe) a first generation Macbook Pro. 2ghz processor, 2gb of RAM (maxed), running 10.5.8.
When running streaming videos on it, the temperature gets absolutely out of control. 194-200 degrees (F) for the CPU, and over 120 degrees on the bottom case. This is WITH the fans going at almost 6,000 RPM, and the computer is elevated at the corners in order to allow for airflow underneath.
There's a lot of separation between the top and bottom pieces near the bottom left of the computer (the corner near the Z key), if that means anything. What the heck is happening here, and can I do anything to fix this without spending hundreds of dollars at a repair shop?

  • New Airport Extreme to First Gen MacBook Pro Losing Connectivity

I just purchased the latest Airport Extreme and am having severe issues between my MacBook Pro and the Airport Extreme. My wireless connection will appear to "hang" as according to the menu bar icon it will appear connected but if I click the drop down it does not show any status information (whether is it connected via PPPoE or not) on the wireless network the Airport Extreme is providing. During the time that no status information is provided the Macbook Pro is unable to access anything across the wireless. Other computers (non-macs) that are using the wireless continue to work fine as if there are no issues so it appears that it has to do with how my Macbook Pro is receiving connectivity information. Sometimes it seems that I can get it to start working again if I click wireless network icon and it rescans for wireless networks. I am currently unsure whether its using wireless A or G (this is a first gen MacBook Pro) but will try to determine that.

  • First Gen MacBook Pro and no firewire 800. Suggestions for capturing video?

My first gen MacBook Pro only has one Firewire 400 port and nothing else (I got in a argument with a mac store clerk regarding the truth of this statement). My external hard drive has one Firewire 400 port, two Firewire 800 ports, and 1 USB. So far as I know the standard for most video cameras are still Firewire 400, in which case daisy chaining is out of the question (considering I will be using that port to connect to my computer). Any suggestions on how to capture video straight from a deck to my external hard drive?
    Thanks!
    MacBookPro1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I think you can use a FW800/400 adapter and daisy chain your camera to the drive.

  • First-gen MacBook Pro and dual-layer DVD+R?

I have a first-generation MacBook Pro (2 GHz Core Duo) running Leopard 10.5.2. I have been given a dual-layer DVD+R, which has a 5 GB AVI file on it that I need to work with. The issue I'm having is, while the MacBook Pro can read the DVD and see the AVI file, when I attempt to copy the AVI to my Desktop, the file gets roughly halfway copied and then I get an error saying that some or all of the file cannot be read. Could this be an issue with my particular model of MacBook Pro and DVD+R DVDs? Is there any way I can get to this file? Any help would be most appreciated.

As I understand it, there's a difference between stamped dual layer DVDs (which most movie DVDs are) and burned dual layer DVDs (which is the DVD I have). I actually have 2 other Macs in the house - a dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 (June 2004 model) and a 1.66 GHz Core Duo Mac Mini. Both Macs simply spit out the DVD about 5 or 10 seconds after I insert it. I'm suspecting it's an issue with the DVD type, but if anyone could shed some light I'm appreciate it. Many thanks!

  • Inherited first gen Macbook Pro

Hey everyone, I have a somewhat vague question. I recently swapped computers with my wife, inheriting her first generation Macbook Pro, which has surprisingly withstood the test of time. Right now I'm trying to maximize the performance so that I can make it through to the next product cycle. It can handle basic tasks. Ideally, I would like to be able to run multiple programs (Powerpoint/Keynote, large PDFs, Chrome, Word), but the computer tends to lag down. The specs are in my signature; the hard drive is about 90% full (93 gb capacity), not sure the RPM. Activity monitor typically shows >1 gb of RAM free.
Would you recommend running any diagnostics, new software or hardware? Is there a cost effective way of installing SSD, or am I better off waiting for prices to go down? My goal is to become more Mac savvy and autonomous, so if you can point me towards any good (ideally free) resources, I'd be very appreciative!
    Thanks, and happy New Year.

    Welcome from me too!
Definitely replace the hard drive with a bigger one--100 GB is just not big enough, and besides, it's likely getting to the end of its useful life as it must be 5 years old now. You can likely look up the specs on the manufacturer's web site using the serial number.
You could try running SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may pick up impending hard drive failure sooner.
You can use any SATA drive that is no more than 9.5 mm tall, which means you cannot use any of the 1 TB drives that are 12.5 mm tall. There are many 500 GB drives around, including a hybrid from Seagate which is supposed to be very fast. There are even some 750 GB drives around that are 9.5 mm tall.
If the old drive has your wife's stuff on it, you can just put it in an enclosure and give it back to her. Then you can set up the new drive with your stuff. You might check on OWC's web site--they have drive kits, which includes an enclosure for the old drive. Also check with Newegg and Tiger Direct, as they often have specials on drives.
There's even one on theSeagate hybrid:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148591
Western Digital's Scorpio Black is also an excellent drive, and not nearly as expensive:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136692
It seems to be sold out, but I'm sure they will get more in.
Do you want to install the drive yourself? Check out ifixit for step by step directions. If you don't, your local AASP can do it for you.
There is a ton of free resources on the Apple site, including many video tutorials for new Mac users. ifixit and powerbook medic are also free resources if you want to work on your Mac yourself, with lots of step-by-step instructions.
Good luck, and happy New Year to you too!

  • First gen Macbook pro will not turn back on after grey screen of death

Hi, i have a first generation Macbook Pro. As i was browsing the web, my computer all the sudden froze and the "grey screen of death" appeared and shut of my computer. After, it tried to restart, but it wont get past the CD rom  or hard drive noise it makes once you press the power button. I hear the noise fully cycle once, then it restarts the noise and keeps skipping. Once its done, the computer IS on, but the screen is black and I cannot do anything. Please help! Ive never dealt with thins kind of problem and Im sort of a noob with computers. Is the computer fried? It is after all 7 years old, and I use it daily.

After the startup sound (be precise) after the sound press the shift Key until the apple appear.
If that wont work. Try an SMC reset
    Then try a PRAM reset

  • Bootcamp windows 8.0 pro installation issue with early 2015 Macbook Pro

I am having this issue with installing Windows 8.0 pro (and 8.1 pro) on my early 2015 MacBook pro vs. Bootcamp. I have tried different method for  multiple times and all failed. Any help is appreciated.
Hardware: (1) early 2015 MacBook Pro with 128GB (13 inches) , (2) Sony USB DVD burner. (3) Two 16 gb flash drive 2.0 version from two different manufactures
Software: (1) 8.0 Pro ISO on flash drive from Microsoft (I have two copies) (2) 8.1 Pro downloaded from Microsoft website.
Note -  I was able to download the bootcamp supporting files successfully and copy to a USB flash drive.
Method 1 - Create the installation disk from ISO on flash drive and also tried copying ISO on hard drive (desktop)- failed.
    I have a 16 GB flash drive (2.0V) connected
ISO is a valid 8.0 pro copy from Microsoft came on a flash drive.
I have the windows 8.0 pro ISO on a flash drive and plugged in.
Issue -  It gets to around 50% of "Copying Windows files..." and then doesn't go any further.  8 hours later, still stuck at around 50%.  I also tried to do the copy ISO from desktop. failed as well.
Method 2 - I repeat the above steps with Windows 8.1 ISO downloaded Microsoft website - failed. Stuck at 50% copying windows file for 9 hours.
Method 3 - I burned the Windows 8.0 pro ISO to a DVD and try to do the installation through a DVD instead.  DVD was successfully created.
I was able to perform the partition.  When the computer reboots, it starts the window installation. However, it got stuck at 7% forever. I tried this multiple times and failed.
Method 4 - I download a 8.1 Pro ISO from Microsoft website, I burned it to a DVD. Repeat method 3,  Again, windows installation stuck at 7%.
Method 5 - I called Apple. - What they told me is pretty much repeat the above steps. Still failed.

The ISO file(s) being downloaded seem to be corrupted. Can you use Microsoft FCIV tool - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/841290?wa=wsignin1.0 ?
The DVDs should be burnt at the recommended rate for the physical media. DU should be used for burning the DVDs.

  • Used safe start to try and fix issues with safari on MacBook Pro but it shuts down right after it stops. What can I do.

Safari kept shutting down and someone suggested trying a safe start to correct issue. All this did was create a new oils sue as my MacBook Pro OS X 10.9.1 system only begins the safe start within lay a small portion of the bar filling and then shuts down. Now I cannot even get back to my regular screen.

    artbyval,
    what is an “oils sue”?
Have you tried booting into your recovery partition? To do so, hold down a Command key and the R key as you start up. It should eventually show a Mac OS X Utilites menu, from which Disk Utility can be selected. In Disk Utility, select the disk that your MacBook Pro boots from (typically named “Macintosh HD”). Once the disk is selected, press the “Verify Disk” button; if it shows problems, press the “Repair Disk” button. Once the verification/repair is complete, restart normally, to see if you can login as normal. Once you can log in again, see if Safari still has the same problem with shutting down.

  • Issues with First Gen G5's

    Hey-
So I might be aquiring a first gen PowerMac G5 for a pretty cheap deal.
First Gen products usually have at least some small issue or bug no matter what the product is.
I was wondering what what they were for the first gen G5's.
    Thanks

We've been running over a dozen of the first-generation 2.0GHz DP G5s since they came out and have encountered no chronic issues at all. YMMV. Some of the single-processor G5s have had some issues, which Apple thinks they have solved with the recent firmware updates; since we don't have any, I can't say if that claim is true.

  • Sleep/wake Issues With Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 13"

    Dear Apple Community,
I have been recently having issues with the sleep/wake cycle of my laptop. Every time my laptop goes to sleep and I try to wake it up it gets stuck on a blank screen for 3 mins before returning to normal functionality. I have tried deleting the sleep image files and the laptop functions fine for a day and then back to the same issues. I have 3 sleep image files, 2 of them are 1.07gb each and the other one is 64mg. I have deleted them many times and they just come back with the same issues. Any help here would be appreciated. Thank You

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Wireless issues with my new Macbook Pro

Just bought a new Macbook Pro, straight out of the box. Works fine with ethernet but wireless it only works in the same room as the router. Elsewhere in the house it won't connect. My other macbook and Macbook air seem to have the same setup and work everywhere around the house. What would make the new Macbook Pro not work on wireless?

    I've a Macbook Pro 15 intel & a Powerbook 17 powerPC
the Powerbook 17 connects to the Airport WiFI always the Macbook Pro 15 did not.
Noticed at work the Macbook Pro 15 always connected to the WiFI (Cisco?) the router is in the ceiling
Moved my Airport WiFI at home UP towards the ceiling (on a higher shelf-better if you could place in ceiling) was on a low shelf
Now Macbook Pro connects always connect through Airport router
My hunch ---> Macbook Pro same antenna issues as the iPhone 4 is experiencing
    the antenna engineers screwed-up
Although the Macbook Pro is smaller than the Powerbook 17 -- it ain't that smaller
try it - put wireless router in attic or ceiling -- up higher

  • Sound Issues with early 2008 Macbook Pro

I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mavericks that has suddenly developed a static and clicking sound through the internal speakers.  The static and clicking sound does not occur when using headphones.  Is this a speaker failing or due to some other reason?

If there is no success with a PRAM reset, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be FREE regardless of the age of the MBP.

Please help me find the problem, my macbook has been rebooting on itself, sometimes immediately following another reboot. In fact as I was writing this thread it rebooted again, thankfully the forum let me recover it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Problems with early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" 2.7 GHz / OWC Mercury Extreme Pro

*Has anyone else experienced issues getting their OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD working in the early 2011 MacBook Pros?*
I am having difficulties getting OS X installed on the new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240 GB. When I install the SSD in place of the factory HDD and boot from the 10.6.6 reinstallation DVD the SSD is not visible to the installation program. If I quit the 10.6.6 installer and run Disk Utility (from the 10.6.6 installation DVD) the SSD is not visible. If I quit Disk Utility and run System Profiler (from the 10.6.6. installation DVD) the drive is visible and firmware and serial numbers are displayed. So like the drive is visible to OS X but the installer / Disk Utility can not see it.
If I put the SSD in an external USB enclosure it is visible - I can format the drive and copy files to it.
I also tried installing the SSD in place of the factory HDD, putting the HDD in a USB enclosure, booting from the OS X installation on the HDD and running the OS X installer from the 10.6.6 DVD. I was able to select the SSD as the target for the installation and the initial file copy was OK, but when the laptop restarted during the installation the SSD would not boot. The grey folder icon with the flashing question mark was displayed instead. Holding down Option while booting only gave me the option to boot from the DVD.
I also tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC of the MacBook Pro - this did not resolve the issue.
I spoke to OWC support who said they did not know of any compatibility issues with the new MacBook Pros and suggested I request a replacement.
The firmware version of the SSD is 350a13f0

This is my exact problem. I have had 2 of these drives so far and both of them have had the same problem with installation internally. The first one I was able to get operational using the method you described, ie: put the OWC SSD in an external case (FW800 was my choice) and install it there. But I encountered the sleep issues, so I sent it back for a replacement.
The second drive I was finally able to install using the second method, but now the computer regularly locks up. So I'm going to call again and hopefully the third try will work.
Just to clarify. The first drive had sleep issues, but had the older firmware. The second drive had the newer firmware (360 I think it is) and didn't have the sleep issues, but locks up while running.
I'm so irritated on how many hours I've spent on this issue. And their support department, though very nice, wasn't helpful at all. It's as if they never heard of this problem.
