Major increase in data usage...could it be Facebook?

My mother barely uses data on her phone, so i got her the 300 plan...since my uncle installed the Facebook app onto her phone, her data usage went passed her limit...
is it really Facebook that is doing this? how could that be using so much data...and i know she rarely uses the Facebook app, so does it run in the background somehow? as far as i know, nothing else has been added to her phone

Try uninstalling the Facebook app and see if the data usage goes down.
Which phone do they have? Knowing exactly which model it is will help us know if we can offer any other suggestions to use for troubleshooting.

• New Blackberry, huge increase in data usage

Hi,
After 2 years with a Blackberry 8520, which I just used to keep track of emails and browse occasionally, I have upgraded to a Blackberry 9720. With the 8520, my data usage each month never went above 33MB, so the advisor I saw at EE said that I could reduce the data allowance to 100MB and still have plenty. Since having the new phone, I have been checking the data usage with an Orange app and after just 5 days, I am at 20MB used. This is despite me uninstalling any other applications that may use data and deliberately avoiding the browser. Even about 10 emails a day without attachments are hitting me for 2 to 3MB data usage.
Does the 9720 still use compressed data - I know the new OS10 models don't - as that is what I was told. If it does, is there anything else it could be? I'm now thinking that getting a new phone is going to cost me 10 times the data I used to use even if I don't use even half the functionality.
Good job I didn't throw away the 8520 as I might be resurrecting it: it may have been as basic as they come but it least it didn't cost me a fortune in out-of-bundle data...
Rich Goodchild.

Lots of reasons.
The 9720 is using 3G and 4G network isn't?
Your 8520 used EDGE, not even 3G. Lots more data can move in 3G and 4G.
The 9720 is a more media savvy device, more data will be used. And it's brand new? You're using it more.

• Sudden increase of data usage with my jetpack.

This is crazy! For the first few months using my jetpack, my usage was consistent with my usage when I was with Sprint. I monitor my usage on a regular basis. So you can image my surprise when I received two text messages in the middle of the night, 15 minutes apart telling me I was at 75% and the 90% of my 14 gig limit, just 17 days into my billing cycle. We had used just over 4 gig to this point, an average month. I contacted Verizon immediately. I was told that Verizon was having technical difficulties but she still put me through to a tech support person. The Tech gave me a song and dance about my data usage that did not match up with my data usage that was being reported on My Verizon, so I pushed the issue and called back. The customer service rep started an investigation on my behalf. When she called me several days later, I was informed that the usage was legit and it was my fault because I had left my jetpack on even when we were not using the internet and there must have been updates occurring. I was also told that nothing could be done until my next bill was issued. We run Linux and do not run ANY automatic updates. After turning off my jetpack for several days, my daughter turned it on for less than 30 minutes to check her email and blogs for her college class. It used in excess of .5 gig during this time. I will be taking my jetpack into the closest Verizon store to get checked out. If this is not resolved to my satisfaction, I will be eating the early cancelation charge and dropping Verizon. I would rather pay a little more through an internet satellite provider than be duped by a company unwilling to fix an obvious problem.

I can see by the posts on this site there are no solutions to an obvious problem with the Verizon Jetpack. My data usage says I have used over 15GBs! in a few hour period and I was only on the internet for about and hour and just the usual checking my email, bank statement, Facebook. My jetpack worked fine up until a two and a half months ago I have contacted Verizon a month ago about excessive data usage reporting. So far this month it says I have over 15G used! No way could it be. My browsing hasn't changed. My computer hasn't changed. I have not downloaded any music or movies for months and I shut off the automatic run on videos on Facebook. I've lived in the same house for 35 years. I shut my jetpack off when I'm done .. If I turn on the Jetpack. and check email and do some browsing,,.within half a day to a day I get a notice that says I've used almost 2 more GB of data!! This is insane. I haven't watched anything on Netflix since last April or May and even then I didn't have any overages. This is a new problem. I took my Jetpack in to our local Verizon Store and all he could do was confirm the data usage. The lady from online support who chatted with me last month said she would back charge to the cheaper plan for a month and then drop it the next month, but now my account shows I'm on a 14 GB plan (use to be 10 then she put it at 12 supposedly for one month..so don't know how in the heck it's now at 14) and it is saying I'm over my data usage. Right now I'm using my phone hotspot. I do not have overages being reported when I use this connection. I also have used my daughters hotspot and NO problem. Face it , to whatever Verizon Tech may be reading this... The problem is there's a bug with the Jetpack 4g or a problem with it's data reporting. I don't believe a large corporation would try to dishonestly upcharge data. I used the old Jetpack in 2011 and 2012 and NEVER had an overage problem. I updated to this new one last November and didn't have a problem until about 2 months ago. I'm an older senior and this is a big problem on a fixed income. My internet usage is about the same as it's been for the past decade. That's why I called Verizon about this problem. I thought maybe the account had been hacked somehow and someone was piggy backing on my device but with the postings on this site and others I see it's a Verizon Jetpack problem! NO ONE wants to Help. The replies I get from Verizon is " Well, this is what the data report says, so you must be using it somehow, with updates or background programs etc. " When NOTHING has changed on my end and it doesn't happen on other WiFi equipment it's obvious this is a Verizon Jetpack problem.. I am just not going to use my Jetpack anymore and believe when I say it will NOT be recommended to anyone we know, not that that will make a dent in anyones life at Verizon, and I use to think it was really a great tool for traveling etc. My husband and I do have the contract with Verizon and will run it out but this has been a really bad experience. BTW..I only hook this up to our computer at home or when we use the tablet up at our cabin,.so only one device at a time and no big downloads.

• IPhone 5 excessive data usage - possible fix

I, like many customers here, have had a major increase in data usage with the iPhone 5. In fact I blew through 1.3 gigs of data in just a couple weeks even though I use wifi 80% of the time.
A couple days ago I restored my phone to its factory settings through iTunes, which installed a fresh version of iOS 6.0.1. This seems to have cured the problem with data and wifi. When I got the iPhone 5 I had restored it from a backup which was from my iPhone 4. Somehow installing a fresh version of iOS 6 on my phone has fixed the problem.
I’m guessing there is a glitch when installing an iPhone 4 backup onto a iPhone 5.

Did you lose anything in the process of doing that? Any tips? Appreciate the help in advance.

• IPhone 5 excessive data usage problem (carrier-AT&T)--any resolutions?

I got an iPhone 5 in June of 2013, and the billing period after I got it, I went over my data usage for the first time ever (I have been an iPhone user since 2010). I thought that it was just because I had been working out at a camp that got poor reception and had been using as much as I always did. However, in the subsequent months, I have racked up data overage charges every month, and since October, it's been several gigs over my plan. I have a 4gb plan with AT&T that I share with my parents (I am a college student), and they don't use hardly any data. As I am a nineteen-year-old, I admit that I do spend a lot of time on the Internet and use a lot of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, etc.), and I have always used a lot more data than my parents, but I don't think I'm doing much more than I did when I still had the iPhone 4 and 4s. I haven't gotten a chance to call AT&T yet to see what they have to say about it, and, unfortunately, my school is in the middle of nowhere and my hometown doesn't have an Apple store anywhere near it so I don't think I'll be able to get to a genius bar any time soon, but I've done a little research and found some threads here that mention problems with the iPhone 5 and data usage. Most of these threads seem to be related to Verizon or are from iOS 6 (and my phone is updated to iOS 7.0.4, which is the latest update at this date), and I wondered if it was still a problem for people.
In the past few minutes, I have done the following to the phone:
Turned off Cellular Data
Turned off iCloud Backup
Turned off Cellular Data for all unnecessary apps
Turned off Location Services for all unnecessary apps
Turned off Notifications for all unnecessary apps
Changed all email accounts to manual
Turned off Diagnostics and Usage sending
Turned off Ad Tracking
Turned off Documents and Data
Now, not to sound spoiled, but I think this is both tedious and a pain in the rear end. It seems to me like it's just treating the symptoms rather than the disease itself, so to speak. I feel that for the money we pay for what is essentially a handheld computer with phone capabilities, I should be able to use it as such. When I've turned off Cellular Data in the past to remedy this problem, I notice that I don't receive texts from a lot of people, which is really frustrating, because I feel like I basically just have a glorified iPod. If I had wanted an iPod, I would have bought an iPod. So, basically, has anyone experienced this problem recently/found a solution that actually fixes the problem rather than just masking it? I feel bad about the overage charges and am very annoyed with the fact that my old iPhone seemed to work better than this new one, and that I can't seem to find much evidence of either Apple or AT&T making much of an effort to acknowledge or fix this expensive problem. My phone reports that my cellular data usage for the current period (which ends on February 11, and it is currently January 28) is 21 GB, and I find it very hard to believe this to be true.
I'm about to reset my phone and see if that does anything, but I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out here.
Thanks.

I'm not trying to minimize your issues, but I have an iPhone 5S and find that I have not had these types of problems on AT&T. I'm wonding if something has gotten stuck in a loop that is continually trying to use data. If you make a good backup of your phone, try restoring it as new, and do not add anything to the phone right away. Let the device run like this for a little while and see what kind of usage you have. You report you phone is showing usage of 21GB. Did you rese this setting on the phone to begin at your billing period? The reason I ask this is some people believe this setting resets on its own with your billing period, it does not. This has to be manually reset by the user, so it might not be that accurate depending on the last time that you reset it.
If the phone seems to not use so much extra data during the period the device does not have extra apps on it, then try restoring from your backup and see what happens. If this increases your data usage quite fast again, then there is probably something corrupt in the backup that is causing this issue.

• WiFi and GPS - Data Usage

8900 Curve (EDGE, Wi-Fi)
Carrier - Rogers
v.4.6.1.250 (Platform 4.2.0.113)
Simple and stupid questions:
1. If the WiFi is enabled, does it mean if I surf the internet any downloading of the pages or surfing does not count towards my data plan usage? Is that correct?
2. There is a golf application (I'm sure there are many) that allows my device to be used as a GPS distance device for golf. It uses the GPS of my device. Is it true that if the app is designed so that my device uses the satellite GPS system vs the cell tower GPS, that there will be no data usage (other than the downloading of the app itself and golf course itself - not major drain of data usage).
Sorry for the questions above if they are simple and stupid.

1. The native BlackBerry OS itself, and most applications, will prefer the WiFi connection.
2. Yes, the GPS signal is via satellite. Your mapping data is from your EDGE or carrier connection. I don't know about your EXACT golf course map application, but it is my experience that mapping aplications do use lots of data.

• IPhone 5 excessive data usage recently?

I have never come close to using my 4gb data plan but in the last week, my phone is using (receiving) nearly 1gb of data a day. While at home and work i'm on wifi which leaves the minimal driving time in between on a LTE network. AT&T said they had a meeting with Apple and that Apple is aware of a data leak. I replaced my iPhone and the same thing. Any suggestions?

• Cancelling contract for Data usage

Can anyone tell me where I can see my contract expiration date? (on the website)
I went over my plan last month as far as DATA and Verizon went ahead and charge me fees for it.
I see a lot of companies offering unlimited data nowadays (for a cheaper monthly rate) and I think it's time to switch.
$105 / month for ONE phone is getting kind of ridiculous. (especially since all the newer app are requiring more data)
You would think that after So many years (seven I believe) i would get a better rate too, but oh well...
thanks for your help!!

stephanem wrote:
love the #upg thanks! that was super fast. Looks like I have few months to go.
On another note, yes I was expecting not be charged an additional data fee.
There were months where I didn't even used the data allowed on my plan, where did that data go?
Whether or not you use the full amount of your allowance each month is completely up to you. Verizon has never offered roll over data/minutes NOR have they hinted that it is available. You have to take responsibility to set you usage allowance accordingly. In a heavier than normal month, you can simply increase your allowance.
The App market is getting bigger and bigger by the minute, especially the video and MP3 streaming. I am planning on using my HTC one to stream music via Bluetooth in my car, there is no way I will make it to the 15th of the month with 2 Gigs allowance, like I say there are tons of other options with unlimited data
You are correct, there are tons of other options with unlimited data. Unfortunately with the smaller service footprints of some of the smaller providers, you will not be able to stream without service in some areas and unlimited data will NOT help you then. I have several ways to listen to music in my car without impacting my data allowance. 1) radio, 2) sattelite radio, 3)via bluetooth with the 1000+ songs I have on my phone, 4)via USB on an old unused iPod synced with my home computer and the 4000+ songs located there. Not a single one of those methods increases my data usage one bit.
I liked Verizon for many things, I am not happy to swtich but I don't have other options if I want unlimited data within my Budget
Just make sure you will not be paying for unlimited data you have no access to! I check other providers each time I come up for renewal of my contract. AT&T offers not much different than Verizon with a slightly smaller footprint. Sprint & T-Mobile offer unlimited data with restrictions AND have a MUCH smaller footprint which include dead zones in and for quite a large area(at least a mile) around my home, not to mention going in and out of service areas while driving.
Hopefully a different provider will work out for you.

• HT4203 Data usage over wi-fi

Even after disabling cellular data usage, when accessing internet over wi-fi, my iphne5 used data, which will unnecessarily increase my data usage. What is the solution?

They are incorrect. Any data pulled down by wifi, is not seen or charged for by your provider. Note that SMS (texting) will only use cellular and not wifi. One thing you can do with the iPhone is turn on Airplane Mode which turns off ALL radios, including wifi. You can then turn wifi only back on, thus blocking anything that tries to use cellular, i.e. a phone call or sms.

• Why is my data usage increasing multiple times a day when I'm on wi-fi?

For both myself on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and my girlfriend on an iPhone 5c, both of which we got just a week ago, we see our data usage total increasing several times a day, typically in very small amounts, occasionally larger. Her increases are about 10x larger than mine overall. All of this happens when we're each on wi-fi so I wouldn't expect to see these increases then. Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it? I'm guessing it may be some sort of auto update processing happening in the background, but I don't know that for sure and don't know what else could be causing this.

After talking to 4 different Verizon reps today, nobody could pinpoint the
cause of this. I was mostly just told not to worry about it. My wifi has
seemingly been very solid both here and at work; I don't notice dropouts
when I'm doing other things on it. But I did disable mobile data on the S4
and observed that the data usage did not increase any further after I did
that. So I guess I'll either use that as my primary mode of operation, and
just manually reenable it when I know I'll be away from a wifi signal, or
turn mobile data back on and live with the ongoing hits until it becomes a
storage issue. At the rate we're using data thus far, that shouldn't
happen.

• Please help, my data usage is increasing and i dont know why?

Hi, Iv had my blackberry for about 3 weeks and all was fine until yesterday.
The data usage continuously increases even though im not connected to the internet or any applications.
The only way i can stop the data usage increasing is if I turn the phone off or turn off all my connections to vodafone and wifi...
I have deleted all the applications on the phone so it cant be them
I have deleted all email accounts as well
is there any way that I can find out what is causing my data usage to increase in this way (It even increases whilst im not even using the phone)
Or is there a customer services number I can call that may be able to help me?
any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

If you press and hold the Menu Key, how many applications show open? If there are more then five, select them and press the Menu Key and select Close.
Then test to see if your data usage is better. If you are still having issues after this contact your wireless provider for further support options.
Cheers,

• Huge increase over past few months on data usage.

Huge increase in data traffic, even at times when systems are in sleep mode - like at 6am in the morning. For months by usage levels varied between 10Gig and 12 Gig and I would adjust my plan as needed to prevent single Gigabyte overcharges. However, in the past 4-6 months I have had to go to 15GB then 20GB, and what we actually do internet wise has not changed any where near that much. Yesterday I had 600 meg of data transferred at about 6am when all systems were either off or in sleep mode. The usage tool on verizon is no help in identifying what is driving this other than broad categories.
Last night I turned off the MiFi device and there was no data recorded until I turned on at 8:30am then it recorded 800 megabytes only based on turning on the PC and not even using it. And the hard file light was on solid for a long long time.
I really need a tool that runs on the PC that shows what program or service is doing this much internet traffic. I have seen disk I/O using Windows Task Manager that shows a number of Chrome services actively working I/O, as well as Google sync, but there is nothing new here that I have done over the past 6 months - my usage is very consistent. And that tool does not show who is driving the MiFi load.
How can I get a handle on this? This is getting very expensive and there is no obvious answer why.

Personally, I use BitMeter OS for my PC. Any bandwidth from your computer (down/up) is logged & you can view certain days to see when it was used.
https://codebox.org.uk/pages/bitmeteros
Also, you may be able to view Mobile AND WiFi data usage (separate tabs) on your mobile devices, under Settings > Data Usage. Click the 3 dots for options.
I had the same issue, but it was due to Verizon Cloud backing up... all 12gb (mostly pictures I don't even care about!).
You may have that or another app that syncs data. It should tell you under Data Usage, though.
I disabled Verizon Cloud through the App Manager.
Hope that helps!

• Unbelievable Data Usage MiFi4620L Jetpack 5839 How Could It Be?

First off, I am a retiree with limited high tech knowledge. We purchased the JetPack about 18 months ago to use while traveling. I also have an iPhone and she has an iPad (wifi only). She has a basic phone as does my 90 yr old Mom. About two weeks ago, I was checking my data usage for the month and was shocked to see that the JetPac had used 5G's of date in one day. In all of the time we have had the JetPac we have never used that much in one month. We do not download music, movies or use "streaming". I immediately called Verizon and was referred to one of the tech guys who was helpful in one sense but couldn't tell me why that much data was used in a 7 hr. window. He did suggest that maybe someone hacked into my wifi even though it is password protected, I live in a retirement community (homes not condo's) and most all of my neighbors can barely use their email much less figure out how to hack my wifi. Anyway, I am now turning off my jetpack after every use (which I never did in the previous 18 months). This is a real pain turning off and on and then having to worry about data use. We only check emails and check into about five or six websites. I like the Jetpack but since we can no longer travel, I guess I will go back to Brighthouse (TV, Internet,Phone) provider and not use the JetPack. Because of this unusually data usage, I have had to increase my data plan to 12g's as I am only halfway through the billing period and am up to almost 9G usage. Any suggestion or ideas would be appreciated.
Things I have now done:
Turn of JetPack when not using in daytime and totally at night.
Called Verizon for help but no real help there.
Reset my JetPack password
Here is my data log from Verizon on the day in question followed by chart 2 with typical three day data usage.

One of your devices, most likely the laptop, must have pulled an update overnight and completed at 7:05 AM on 5/26. This is not a confirmation but a "what most likely happened" solution to your problem. VZW does not grant us the tools and data necessary to confirm exactly what happened during your data usage sessions. Unless you had a monitor setup in place to begin with there is no way to know with certainty what exactly happened.
Chances are that whatever download your laptop/ipad required has already gone and done its business. Your usage should not spike again until the next one and no one can tell you when that will be. If you continue to see spikes then have a friend stop by to bring the laptop to a public hotspot so it can complete its updates without chewing your data plan to pieces.
Phones typically do not behave the same way in a data usage situation since they are designed to be on a metered data plan from the start. Ipads and laptops are not in the same boat. Automatic updates as well as viruses or malicious users can take over your personal device and consume data without your knowledge or consent. I'd focus on these two devices for the time being.
Should you have the patience to continue with VZW the next step would be to use isolation and figure out which device has been compromised or behaving badly. You will need to leave your Jetpack online with only one device connected to it at a time. Review the data logs religiously, Id wait for a fresh billing period, and check to see when your data spikes accordingly. Once you know the device then you can review the next options on how to plug the leak.

• Increased data usage

My data usage has increased quite a bit with IOS 6. I have been very vigilant in watching what I do. It's so frustrating to check the usage and the times I have large blocks come through are usually when I know I've been connected to wifi or in some cases overnight while the phone is off. Any suggestions?

You should be able to identify the applications or system services that are causing a significant increase in usage with a little detective work and a little time by watching and analyzing the information in Settings > Cellular > Use Cellular Data For. Also, if you tap on System Services at the bottom of that list it will show details of system service usage. All number are since the statistics where last reset and the reset is in that same area.
