Major iTunes problems - freezing, crashing

I'm having major problems with iTunes (OS 10.7.3). I was running iTunes 10.6 and I downgraded to 9.2.1 to see if that helped but it didn't; problems in both versions. Essentially, iTunes hangs or freezes with a spinning beach ball quite often, during the following operations:
- determining gapless playback
- converting to mp3
- syncing to my iPod (it will often say a file is damaged and can't be transferred; this includes songs I've downloaded from the iTunes store)
- sometimes for no apparent reason, i.e., in the midst of playing a song when I'm not even using my computer for anything else
Occasionally, the freeze is so bad it locks up my entire MacBook Pro and I can't even use force quit—I have to hard restart my computer to get it to respond again. This happens every time I try to convert a song to mp3, for example.
I've tried a lot of things, none of which have seemed to resolve the problem. Things I've done:
- trashing my entire iTunes library and rebuilding from scratch by re-adding all the songs and re-syncing to my iPod
- downgrading to 9.2.1
- starting both versions of iTunes in safe mode (problems still happen); I believe I've gotten rid of any 3rd party extensions but happy for suggestions to the contrary if some are hard to find
- deleting songs that iTunes seems to have a particularly hard time with (though I'd like to be able to listen to these some day, of course!)
- constant checking for software updates in hopes of a fix...
Anyone had a similar problem and managed to solve it successfully? I like to listen to music a lot so having iTunes out of commission and being unable to sync anything new to my iPod without major fights is making me a little crazy. Thank you!

Alright, so on my laptop I got my library to work on the D drive, but guess what. My 40GB iPod won't be recognized by the computer or iTunes but i don't really care about that iPod. My 60GB iPod is recognized somewhat but iTunes says something like "the iPod cannot be read... blah blah blah... you should restore your iPod." I am to the point of refusing to restore my iPod because I did that a few weeks ago for my desktop computer and I had to wait a full 36 hours for another non-Apple program to recover the data on my iPod because iTunes wouldn't sink it. No wonder I don't want to restore my iPod. Please someone help me!

  • 160gb iPod Classic causes iTunes to freeze/crash

I have a 160gb iPod Classic and when plugged in the USB, it causes my iTunes to crash. My computer recognizes the iPod when plugged in but iTunes does not recognize the iPod and immediately freezes until I force shut down iTunes.  I have an updated version of iTunes, running it on Windows 7.  The iPod works when I am listening to it; however, there seems to be lagging and slower than normal controls compared to when I first purchased the iPod.  I have an iPod Nano that works while I plug it in the computer and iTunes does not crash.  iTunes also works normally when there is no iPod plugged in as well.

Having essentially the exact same problem. I have an iPod Classic 160GB but everytime I connect it to my laptop, iTunes freezes and I have to close it through Task Manager. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on an Acer Aspire 5551 with an AMD Athlon II P320 Dual-Core Processor.
The iPod plays music fine, although it is a little slower and less responsive than when I first had it (no track skips, just browsing menus). iTunes recognises my 8GB iTouch and remains responsive with that but for some reason it freezes when the Classic is connected. The Classic appears in My Computer but doesn't appear to be recognised by iTunes. As far as I'm aware my iTunes is up to date and it runs fine when nothing, or even my iTouch, is connected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Major iTunes Problem.. Please help me!!!

A few weeks ago, my iTunes suddenly crashed. I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, but the agreement terms pop up for one minute, then suddenly disappear. It's preventing me from getting onto my iTunes and updating my iPod. What can I do?? I need major help please
    -Kaitlyn

The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevent it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them or if you want to be able to put them back if it doesn't help, drag them to some other location. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistant the next time you launch iTunes. Note that you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
If that still doesn't help, then try this:
Bugie: Perform a Thorough & Complete Uninstall and Reinstall of iTunes/QuickTime.
    Hope this helps.

  • Adobe Bridge won't open & iTunes problems after crash

    Hello,
I was using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop (CS3 versions) earlier and was having PS perform a very memory-intensive task. I was also running iTunes and Firefox at the time. PS crashed; when I tried to reopen it, it got stuck on the initialization window. I couldn't force quit, so I tried to restart my computer - but whatever was preventing PS from either booting or closing seemed also to be preventing my mac from shutting down. So I did a forced shut-down by holding down the power button.
When I restarted, PS would launch, but Bridge wouldn't - the icon would bounce in my doc for a bit, then stop; on each subsequent try, it would bounce a little less, but still not launch (same goes for trying to open it from the Applications folder.) Also, when I launched iTunes it told me my library was "damaged", and had be go through set-up steps again as if I had never used the software.
I'm not exactly sure what to do here to get Bridge working correctly. I'm not sure if this question is better suited for an Adobe forum, but I thought I'd start here. Any help would be appreciated...Thanks.
    J

    Chris,
Try one of these things or both:
    * open Bridge from within Photoshop; or
    * make a new Mac account and log in as a different user. Bridge will likely start. After that, it will probably work in your regular account.
However, there is no "firmware" update involved here. Firmware is applied to machines only, via an Apple patch. Many machines don't ever get a firmware uppdate ever, only a few Mac models do.
    >Problem is though I need the most current version to be able to read the CR2 files
Also, the Bridge updater does NOT touch the ACR plug-in, nor does it update said camera raw plug-in either. You can manually download the ACR 4.3.1 plug-in and install it yourself as per the very detailed instructions on the ACR download page. Follow those
    b to the letter.

  • Major iTunes problems

Lately I've been getting the message :
"Could not complete the Music Store request. The
    Store may be busy.
Check your internet connection or try again later"
I can however search for things. Just can't view the home page. Also get this message when I log in or vote on iMixes. Any ideas?
Also, on two different computers and operating systems Mac and PC I've been gettting freezes? Can't scroll down, can't click on any cd titles or band names for links? what is going on?
    at home I'm using iTunes 6 on a G4 powermac dual 1.25/ OS 10.3.9
at work I'm using iTunes 7 on a Dell Pentium 4 with Windows 2000
    It's pretty annoying.

    Hi Paul,
can't help you, if its only to say that i have allready 3 days that message and i was near to reinstall itunes. but i see that i am not the only one.
so probabely its because of the ADC on itunes see the following link:
    https://daw.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/DSAuthWeb.woa/wa/login?appIdKey=D430FFC 413E782A1BC8652AD1966805E50820CD871C8F86F7151628F0291F620&path=/cgi-bin/adconitu nes.pl
apparently there are some videos available on itunes but only for apple devlopers, and that might be the problem.
it seems that it needs a long time to download the video movie.
    let us be patient…

  • ITunes Problems (freezing)

I bought my iMac last week and everything had been going fine with iTunes until yesterday when it started to freeze (not open) when I activated it. I had to "force quit" to get out of it. I shut down the computer several times, still nothing. Just as I was typing this though, it worked so it appears to be a sporadic problem. Is this a problem for everyone, or have I just got a dud?

Same problem here with new 15in MBP, and some additional info. Have had numerous CD's freeze up while adding to iTunes Library, but iTunes is only part of the problem. Have tried dragging tracks from same CD directly to desktop with iTunes closed -- still get freezes, usually on the same track or part of CD. I am lucky to also have a tray loading G5, and have had no trouble ripping the same CDs on the G5 that froze on the MBP. Have also had repeated trouble ejecting the CDs from the MBP, regardless of method (eject key, drag to trash, restart with trackpad-click depressed). The only thing that finally worked with several CDs was to totally power down the MBP, let it sit long enough to totally cool down, and then start it with trackpad-click depressed. In every case, it ejected after the cool down. I have also had the same problem with not being able to force quit iTunes during these freezes. One thing that helps is to change the the CDs and DVDs System Preference to not open iTunes with insertion of an audio disk. Apparently, when the CDs don't eject, they keep trying to remount, which reopens iTunes before it can quit. Sometimes, if I relaunch the finder (using key command force-quit) immediately after force-quitting iTunes (using hold-click on dock), this will allow iTunes to quit, and the CD will eject. All of these were store bought CD's, but most of them were rented from the public library, which has put some security strips on the CD whch may increase the thickness by a fraction of a mm. Still, the same CDs are no problem in the G5. I have also had the same problems on a few brand new store bought CDs.

  • Major iTunes problem!  Need Help!!!

I have completely cleaned out my iTunes library and all music files on my iPod, but it still says I am using half of my iPod storage. (8.79 out of 19 GIGs) I have uninstalled, re-installed, rebooted, shut down and still every time I plug in my iPod, it reads half full. Can anyone tell me how to get my meter back to zero?

Just run the iPod updater. One of the choices is to restore it back to factory defaults. That should wipe the drive. Then you can run the updater again and install the latest version of software for your particular iPod.
I had the same problem once before, and that took care of it, lickity split!
    Good luck,

  • ITunes would freeze/crash on Lunch - my version

i had this problem for the last week my macbook i7 was running crazy hot. tried every thing here on the forum ended with fresh system install and i was heading to fix-it the PC way which is, formatting my HD. From a help of friend I did run the console ( found in utility folder) i lunched itunes and it did show the problem was iwow plug-in, the console did guide me for the location for that plug-in which i thought i got ride of it a while ago. Now my itunes in the dock running and my MBP runs at temp 44

    Jeddah, KSA

I found the solution! At least it worked with me.
If you have this problem in iTunes for Mac OS X
    1) Go to Music>iTunes>iTunes Media> And copy the folders Music, Movies, ... to your desktop. Once you have copied all the folders delete the ones in the iTunes Media folder.
    2) Then go to Music>iTunes>iTunes Library.itl and delete the file iTunes Library.itl
    3) When you open iTunes you will see that you have no music in your library so go to your desktop and drag the folder Music,Movies, etc to iTunes. This way iTunes will create a new library file and you won't have the problem message at launching!
    I hope I could help

  • Major iTunes problems- please help

Okay people, here's a good one for you. On my desktop I have the latest iTunes version, software, and all that jazz. When I hook up my 60GB iPod or my 40GB iPod iTunes locks up and refuses to sync my iPod. I have had this problem for quite a while now. Anyone have any suggestions? Now I have another problem. Since I cannot use my desktop I backed up my 11GB library to 3 DVDs so I can transfer my library to my Sony Vaio laptop. On that laptop I uninstalled iTunes from the C drive and installed the latest 7.3 iTunes on the D drive so I would have enough space. I finished restoring the first disc and then put in the second. A message popped up saying there was not enough room on the C drive for all of the music. What in the ****? I installed on the D drive! So then I looked at the shortcut icon's properties it said it was located on the C drive. I then did the 'explore' thing and it said iTunes was on the D drive. So according to the laptop iTunes is in two different places. Does anybody know what the **** is going on and can you please help me?

  • HELP: iTunes 6 unable to sync songs with ipod - hangs freezes crashes

    Hi,
This has been posted before, but a search of 500 messages have turned up no solutions. Anyone who has any idea of a solution please help.
    PROBLEM:
iTunes 6 and ipod 5th gen unable to sync songs or manually move more than 50 songs at a time to ipod. It hangs / freezes / crashes when updating the ipod. It will stop at 50 songs, 100 songs, sometimes even 2200 songs - out of 8000.
The "Beachball of death" comes on, and there is no way to force quit or stop the now frozen update. The only thing that gets a response is pulling the ipod from the dock or powering the computer down manually.
    TRIED:
    1. Repair permissions
    2. Update ipod with latest ipod update software
    3. Restore ipod " " " " '
    4. Used Activity Monitor to see where program hangs - no added info, it will stop randomly at different songs, and next time around it will pick another son to hang / freeze at
    5. uncheck "put hard disks to sleep when possible" in Energy Preferences pane
I am at my wits end with this..... will try anything.... even Voodoo at this point as long as you tell me it worked for you!
Anyone ever solved this long standing problem (which seems to be present with iTunes 7 as well) ?
    Thanks !

  • ITunes Store freeze while downloading and now permanent problems

I bought an album through the iTunes Store today, and while downloading, iTunes completely froze. Not sure how that freeze was caused, could be that I was using up a little too many system resources with other stuff running in the background.
In any case, the album was only partially downloaded, so when I restarted iTunes I used the "search for available downloads" option to succesfully download the rest of the album, or so I thought. Turns out it did download all songss except for one, and that one doesn't show up anymore when I retry the "available downloads" option.
Strangely, whenever I now select one of the other songs from the same album in my library, iTunes completely freezes! I can only get it working again by stopping the process through taskmanager and restarting. This only occurs when the Genius-bar is shown, so it looks like looking up these songs through the iTunes store is causing a problem somehow. Does anyone have any ideas to
    a) get the missing song from the store and
    b) keep iTunes from crashing??
Is there a way to deinstall and reinstall iTunes without losing my settings, iPhone backups and library? Or can I repair an installed version somehow?
(I have the most recent iTunes version (8.0.1.11), running on WinXP SP3 - oh and it did synch the incomplete album to my iPhone and I can play the songs without problems on that)

Deleting the album, reinstalling iTunes and then re-downloading the album turned out to be the way to fix it.

  • ITunes 10.4 crashes/freezes on importing video

I have 2 computers as listed below, both using the latest iTunes 10.4
I have over 3000 music videos in .mov containers (various codecs) and now after upgrading to the latest iTunes, I can't add new ones to my Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 without crashing it. In addition, a brand new OS X Lion iMac running the latest iTunes with a fresh drive and no existing iTunes database, freezes upon trying to import beyond a few of these music videos. Since it is a problem on both computers, and under different circumstances, it is obvoiously a bug... and a very annoying one for me. Any workarounds or fixes out there??

  • ITunes Freezes/Crashes On MacBook Pro When Connecting iPad

iTunes (v10.7) crashes on my new MacBook Pro Retina (OSX 10.8.2) almost all the time when I connect my iPad Retina (IOS 6.0.1). When i connect via USB, iTunes comes up but the iPad does not appear as a recognizable device. This problem started about a week ago and prior to that there was no problem connecting. What can I do to correct this problem? Is it related to iTunes 10.7? Is it related to a MacBook Pro Retina problem? Is it related to an OSX 10.8.2 problem? Is it related to an iPad Retina problem? Is it related to an IOS 6.0.1 problem?
I have tried using a different iPad-to-Mac USB cable to connect with no success.

Turns out all I had to do was reboot the Mac and the problem was cleared.

  • Itunes 10.0 Crash/Freeze when beginning to importing CD

    All,
I recently bought my father an iPod Nano 5th gen. We got about 5 CD's properly imported on iTunes 9 when I was showing him how to import and sync his device. However, soon after I 'cut him loose' he reported a problem with the iTunes freezing and causing trouble for the rest of the computer. I've replicated the symptom and have done an evening of searching with no avail. I upgraded to v10 with the problem persisting. Here is the progression of how to replicate the symptoms...
    1. start computer/itunes
    2. insert cd
    3. click yes when asked "would you like to import this CD"
    4. iTunes begins importing, but freezes on the first song with less than 1/16 completed. iTunes no longer responsive
(5.) Can CtrlAltDel and shut down iTunes, but other functions remain inactive (starting new programs, shutting down, etc... computer needs hard restart)
(6.) Can replicate with 3 other CD's. Stopped trying after this.
(7.) Can successfully rip via Windows Media Player and drop and drag into iTunes. To me, this proves correct working order of CD rom drive and general windows software.
Alternately, iTunes will freeze when simply trying to play off of a CD within 5 seconds of playing the song.
I have tried operating with the "Use error correction when importing CDs" unchecked, yielding no different results.
Please advise, thank you in advance!!!
