Major omission in a standalone package.

I recently read an article with Tom Hogarty, Lightroom product manager. When asked where Lightroom was going, obviously didn't give much away.
However he did say maybe a ND filter effect. Well I hope Tom has more in store than that...
It would be nice if Lightroom was 95% standalone without the need to go into PS. Also the hint of maybe letting third parties develop modules.
Well personally I hope the product doesn't rely on these as I do not want to spend money on plugins for something that I beleive should be in Lightroom.
PS can have thousands of plugins but very few that you cannot do it, albeit slower at times, in native PS.
Lightroom, from reading this forum has a few omissions, like output sharpening etc.
But the one major flaw that never gets a mention even in ACR ( also controlled by Tom Hogarty ) is good lens correction.
You can get away with it in ACR/PS by the lens correction filter / distort feature or even third party plugins. Now a lot of people have wide angle lenses and a lot of those shots suffer from keystoning.
Also pincushioning, barrelling etc.. if it bulges, leans-in or pinched there is nothing one can do in LR that can preserve the changes in RAW+XML.
A filter that recognises every lens on the planet and makes adjustments would be fine but I would be happy with a very simple adjustment method.
For example in the crop screen you can rotate, diagonally move along with up and down adjustments. A simple addition would be to have grab points halfway along the sides that can be dragged in or out.
That would give some pincushion/barrel adjustment. Also how hard would it be to make the corners + ALT key move independently in or out - like distort command in transform..
What do you think?
Peter

For me LR takes care of about 65% of what I would expect it to do. Things I
find lacking either lacking as in weak feature or lacking as in not there
include...
1. Better slideshow features (very weak right now).
2. Better printing feature (very weak right now).
3. Good quality and capable lens distortion correction.
4. Better noise reduction (ala Noise Ninja or Neat Image).
5. Being able to print to a image file (for printing Contact Sheets to JPG,
etc.)
6. Better sharpening. The sharpening there is good, but needs to be
available for import (there now), print and export.
7. Dodge and Burn Tools.
8. Better image watermarking facilities (what they have now is odd and
weak).
9. Up the pixel size limit so it can handle larger images than 9,999 pixels
on a side (stupid limit that should have been dealt with. I know it is ACR
but it should have been dealt with.)
For everything else I have no issue going to Photoshop. Layers, channels,
CMYK, actions, etc. are where they belong and that is in Photoshop.

One small thing - I believe the reason why some of my drivers were messing up was because they were SP2 specific; the older drivers and the ones that were compatible with both SP and 2 were fine.
As soon as I did the reinstall, all of the drivers/programs that were not working, worked (aside from the ones that I mentioned in my attached email above).
So, if after uninstalling the old SP2 you are told that loads of drivers/programs will not work, fear not - most should fix themselves upon installing the new SP2.

  • E-recruitment - Whether it is part of ESS or its standalone package?

    Hi Experts,
e-recruitment is part of ess or its standalone package. e-recruitment related information is available at following places:

If we have to implement e-recruitwent, then we need to do? Should we implement using the first link or second link
Please help me and provide me the information.
    Regards,
    Gary

    Hi Gary,
The E-Recruitment package is completely separate from ESS.  While the standard ESS package contains an area (Career and Job) that can point to E-Recruitment functionality, it does not include this functionality by itself.
To answer your question, neither ESS nor E-Recruitment necessarily need each other to be there first, but because of the advantages of running SAP products together, it would be most efficient to have your HCM implementation (with or without ESS) up first before implementing E-Recruitment in order to maximize your efficiency of people data management.
Please let me know if you need additional clarity on this issue.

  • Motion as a standalone package?

Hi there, I am a fairly accomplished web designer and user of photoshop. I have been approached by a client of mine. They are a large national, commercial radio network (UK). I have done several adverts for them and helped design parts of their web site.
They have asked me if I can make them a short post-roll and pre-roll animation that they can use in any future videos that they put online. You the kinda thing; 5 seconds of their logo falling into view and cracking the pavement or something like that. has to be high quality animation, good enough for broadcast. I have been searching around and it seems that Motion 4 is what I'm after.
Firstly, do you think I'm correct? Is motion 4 what I would want to make a short 3D animation of the company logo doing something short and eyecatching? If so is it available as a standalone package as I cannot afford to stretch to the cost of Final Cut Studio.
If not, can anyone recommend any other software that might do the trick?
    thanks!

Hi adam thanks for the reply. I don't think I would need to create an 3d objects. I had a mess around with LiveType on a friends system and very quickly managed to create something, rather crude to be honest, but it showed me what could be possible with a more powerful application.
In livetype I imported the company logo and applied some effects to it which made it appear to fall out of the sky and hit the ground (ground which i made in photoshop and added as a series of stills to show the cracks).
I may end up just getting FCP as I am feeling very frustrated that this is something I could do, except for not having appropriate software!

  • Standalone ActionScript 3.0 Language Reference display not working

I am unable to view the majority of the downloadable standalone ActionScript 3.0 Language Reference.
    The document in question: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/standalone.zip
    (link grabbed from http://www.adobe.com/devnet/actionscript/references.html)
    To replicate:
    1) Download the file from http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/standalone.zip.
    2) Expand the zip, open the resulting folder and open the index.html document in your web browser.
    3) Pick any filter link you desire from the choices on this page. Notice that the package and class filters in the header continuously display "Retrieving Data from Server…"
    4) Click on the Classes link in the header at the top.
Result: The class list displays only momentarily, then completely hides.
It would be great if there was a way to completely circumvent the filters. There appear to be several missing linked elements in the download, such as en_US/shared/ahpods/AHPod.js.
I would gladly settle for an all-in-one PDF of the reference.

Fix from Joe ... Ward on the http://forums.adobe.com/message/3958537#3958537 thread:
Unzip the reference into a folder named "langref" -- there's a bug in the Javascript that filters the page content based on your selections (in those controls that say "Retrieving data from server..."). The code actually looks for a folder named "langref". (I'm sure the engineer who did that thought it was a quick hack he or she would clean up right away...)

What I do is get the sources and MD5s in the PKGBUILD, then makepkg -o.  I'll manually compile the sources but not install them, and when I have a few one-liners that make the magic happen, I put it into the build() section.  Then I'll rm -rf the $srcdir and actually try it with package { true; } as the package() function.  If that works, I'll try some install lines (instead of true) and run find against the $pkgdir.  If it all looks good, I'll make sure my dependencies are in check and pack it up.

  • KDE split packages

Hi, i'm about to get a new computer (hopefully) based on 64BIT so i browsed is Gentoo's website and i so that now gentoo has split ebuilds for kde, that means that if you want to install Kopete for example, you don't need to install all of kde's network stuff.
Why in Arch it's not like that?

Here's Kopete and here's the PKGBUILD for you. I've made standalone packages for most every kde app. Just want to test them on a base install with X and kdelibs before uploading them all to user contrib.
If you guys want a specific kde app, lemme know and i'll upload it. Just been busy and got sidetracked.

  • ID CS2 Mac - Packaging Results in 0kb Fonts

It appears as though the majority of the time I package my InDesign project, the fonts folder created is full of 0kb fonts. This doesn't happen every time, but most times. This happens to all of the font types. We're unable to send the fonts to the printer without having to manually go in and copy the fonts used. Often times there are many, many fonts used and this requires entirely too much time for something that should be easily automated.
I've googled and searched these forums. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?
Thanks so much in advance for your help.

By running the script it removed all Adobe-installed stuff. This included removing the "Reqd" folder in this path: Library > Application Support > Adobe > Fonts. InDesign CS2 expects that folder to be there. You could copy the folder from another computer, or do a reinstall on InDesign

  • WebVPN Software Package for AnyConnect

I am trying to configure my 2821 router for AnyConnect following the below link:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5855/products_configuration_example09186a0080af314a.shtml
I came to the following line but I can't find the webvpn package anywhere on the Cisco website.  I do not have a windows machine available to me so I can't use CCP, as this guide advises.  I can only configure this via command line.
webvpn install svc flash:/webvpn/svc_1.pkg sequence 1
Can anyone advise where I can find this webvpn software package so I can continue with the configuration?  Or can someone provide me another set of instructions to get this configured?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Jeffrey Simon napisano:Thanks for the post.  I just checked out your link.  So if Iam to understand this correctly, if I am going to be having Mac and PC computers connecting via AnyConnect I would have to install the package mentioned above in addtion to "Web deployment package for Mac OS X "Intel" platforms" correct?
    Yes, that's correct.
    Explanation:
anyconnect-win-3.1.03103-k9.pkg -> Web deployment package for Windows platforms
anyconnect-macosx-i386-3.1.03103-k9.pkg -> Web deployment package for Mac OS X "Intel" platforms
anyconnect-macosx-i386-3.1.03103-k9.dmg -> Standalone DMG package for Mac OS X "Intel" platforms
anyconnect-linux-3.1.03103-k9.pkg -> Web deployment package for Linux platforms
anyconnect-predeploy-linux-3.1.03103-k9.tar.gz -> Standalone tarball package for Linux platforms
anyconnect-predeploy-linux-64-3.1.03103-k9.tar.gz -> Standalone package for 64-bit Linux platforms
Do you happen to have a better set of step-by-step instructions for getting the AnyConnect server running on my router?  The instructions I was able to find are really GUI based and I am looking to deploy this via command line.

That's fixed it. Does the flashplayer player package need to be updated if lib32-curl is a dependancy? Does one submit this as a bug?

  • Connectivity issues with AE card after v4.2 update on 10.3.9

Teach me not to read up on updates before installing them, though I suppose I shouldn't have to....grr. Stupid lack of quality control.
Anyway, I have a 1.25ghz PB running os 10.3.9, and my network was running just fine before I installed the update. Afterward, when I opened up Safari, I had full, fast connectivity for about 15 minutes. Then certain sites, like the MacAddict forums and Yahoo, simply refused to open (they timed out), and several others would take five or six tries to get through (all other tries would time out) Some sites would open consistently, but the vast majority of those I could even contact would not load properly or completely. Most would either not load graphics, hang midway through the transfer, or never reach 100%
Oddly, my connectivity through other non-web ports (AIM, bittorrent) seems unaffected.
My wired ethernet capability is still fine as well, no problems with any browser, so long as I'm plugged in (to the netgear router at the moment).
This same problem occurs with Safari, Mozilla and IE (yeah, I even tried IE) So I doubt it's the Safari 1.3.1 update that I installed at the same time.
It also occurs on both an AEBS and a Netgear WGR614, so it's not a matter of the AEBS firmware.
I've tried rebooting, resetting, reinstalling the 4.2 software from the standalone package, reinputting my network settings, deleting pref files, etc. All to no avail.
If anyone has any clue what's going on, I would much appreciate the help.

Sadly I don't have answers either. I'm not sure what happened but as of the last few days i've been having the same problems. There are also times when my mac mini wont even connect to the base station.
What I find strange is that my sister has the same airport firmware installed and her machine is unaffected. I'm on hold with apple atm, so we shall see what they can figure out.

  • Update 10.5.5 successfully installed

My first post here. I have a Macbook - my first Mac OS product and bought in 2008 - and my system has been what was originally installed at the time of buying - 10.5 I think. I have avoided installing updates since whenever i used to visit this forum, i used to find major complaints about the system going wholly down or lesser but serious other complaints.
When 10.5.5 was announced, i visited this forum again and saw similar complaints. However, I took the risk and downloaded the whole package - the standalone package of 600mb odd. I installed it and the whole process absolutely smoothly. It took a maximum period of 10 minutes including the restart (excluding the download time of course). Not a single error message. No delays whatsoever in installation (i read some people having to wait at least 5 minutes or even endlessly).
The reason i am writing this is that normally i, and i am sure many others, visit here when they have problems and not many write when they do not. So many like may remain hesitant in installing the update.
Maybe my system is quite simple in the sense that i have not installed many additional software/hardward and have not made many system tweaks.
Hope this feedback is useful. I have visited this forum for resolving many of my doubts or problems and have found past threads quite useful.
And No, I am not writing this for Apple company in any way.
    Cheers and thanks!

    jmthakur,
99% of problems with updates are caused by disk errors that occur during or prior to the update. In only a rare cases does an update actually "break" some functionality, and in these cases, Apple is normally very quick to come out with an additional fix. There are some few other circumstances where an update "breaks" compatibility with third-party hardware or firmware, but these too are rare, and to be expected in any multi-manufacturer environment. Typically, these problems can be and are fixed by a firmware update for the affected third-party product.
Because the great majority of problems are disk error-related, indicating some weakness in a given installation's file system (or "disk directory"), we see a definite pattern to the complaints on these boards. As a "reference release" (10.4, 10.5, etc.) matures, and progressive updates to that release are introduced, more and more people complain of problems. This is because they have gone for longer and longer periods of time since the last format (erasure) of their hard drive, and their file system becomes more and more susceptible to disk errors.
Disk errors are a fact of life, and will always be to some extent. Advances in a given file system structure may bring improvements, but those advancements are few and far between. "Journaling" is one such advancement, and it brought with it a large improvement in this regard, but it still doesn't prevent all file system problems, especially as they relate to upgrading and updating.
This is one of the great advantages that Mac users have over users of other OSes, namely that Apple has a firm handle on the hardware for which it develops OS X, and that it can closely and accurately target that hardware in all of its upgrades and updates. Due to this, it can reasonably be stated that almost all problems attributed to a given update actually have nothing at all to do with the update, and everything to do with the installation or file system on which the update is being run. Also, that any update that performs flawlessly for one user can be expected to perform flawlessly for all.
I always update as soon after the release of an update as is practical for me, and I have never had a problem. Then again, I also always make a final backup prior to running that update, in case I happen to be one of the unlucky few that encounter a disk error. Perhaps more pertinent, I see to it that I do not go for extended periods of time without formatting and reinstalling. Typically, I do this when I upgrade from one reference release to the next (10.4 to 10.5, for example), but I am always prepared to do it any time I begin to see any problems in my own installation. I never do.
Thank you for your positive feedback regarding your update experience. I am sure that it will benefit someone, at some time.

  • "Right" way to mix SAX and DOM in app

I'm writing a standalone desktop application that reads and stores data as XML files. Eventually, it might be converted to use some web services, but it's not a priority right now.
What I need to do is to use an XML file, which could be large, as kind of a database -- there are many entries, each with a unique identifier, and the application will query the file to find those it needs to match and returns those as objects I'm mapping.
At the moment, because this is a personal project and I'm using it to learn more technologies, I'm trying to (somewhat artificially) restrict myself to the pure Sun APIs. So far, my investigations have pointed to JAXP (by including Java EE 5 libraries) with StAX (including JAX-WS). Which raises two questions:
    1) To do this "right", do I really need to bundle my app with the entire JaveEE+Metro stack?
    2) Is there a better solution than StAX that's fully Java 5 compliant, even if it means stepping out of the Sun box? I haven't found many references to other solutions that are more recent than 2004. Is parsing XML on an app that has nothing to do with an appserver that uncommon?

More likely than not, I won't be abstracting to that degree. If the current structure isn't right, I'd update the app instead of storing that kind of information in more files.
I imagine at this point an example would be more effective. The app is itself more of an inventory browser that can jump around different searches dynamically. As an illustration, imagine that it's an inventory for DVDs. One central file will be your collection (with each entry containing a movie ID, date of purchase, etc). Another file would be more static, a list of DVDs themselves. These entries would contain information about the package itself -- how many discs? What's the title of the package? Which special features does it have? It would also point to an entry in yet another file which would have information about the film, containing biographies of the people listed under the movie credits.
Basically, I want a flatfile database that I can do joins on that are split up into different files. There are few files (here, one) that will be constantly updated by the user. The others could be modified if needed, but it's not going to be optimized for it. (For example, you could own a DVD that nobody's ever heard of, and put in the info yourself.) Periodically, one or more of the more static files is updated and will be downloaded into the app.
One of the advantages I see for this is that, in the future, I could with few changes turn this into more of a web service. Instead of pushing changes in those few files, the app would look to a web service for the data it would now find in files on the user's hard drive. But for now, it also has to be one standalone package.
To answer the question, the file that will most commonly be updated by the user is the one that I don't have problems loading into memory in full. It's the other data that it links to which I want to be able to search and load into objects dynamically. My current implementation is to run the file through SAX and grab the data as it sees it, but it's really ugly. That could very well be how I'm using it and not because I'm trying to shoehorn some functionality into a technique it doesn't fit, but I'd like to find that out. ;)

  • Slideshow for "Now Playing" (suggestion for multiple artwork in one song)

As some may know, you can put more than one album art (picture) in a song. When it's done, the "Now Playing" window, which usually showcases the artwork of the song playing, would have a small right/left arrow beside it. When pressed, you switch to a new artwork.
However with the recent updates on iTunes, that arrow button's disappeared. Now it's as pointless as ever to put multiple pictures. My purpose with this feature is to put album covers and the single artwork together, only if they are the first tracks of whichever album. (Yes, I like to stare at the album covers while listening to music).
IDEA - Why not have the "Now playing" window fade between pictures like a slideshow? So for example, Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" album's 1st track "Mr. Know It All", a single that bears its own artwork. Putting the album and single cover in the song while playing, they'd alternate between pictures every 5 seconds.
I just think that if you can put more than one picture in a song, might as well make use of it. There are a lot of albums that have singles as track no.1. Some have a great single artwork but can't be shown because it needs the album cover. This would make a great compromise. It might even be more neat to put a real life picture of you or someone or a place you know because the song reminds you of .
    What do you guys think?

    hi
I agree - and was glad to see this post and intend to search for more. I vaguely recall some kind of multimedia artwork to replace and extend the idea of the printed album cover being talked about. Was that a standalone package one bought?
Animating covers and album info - some albums I have eg one I just put in itunes - has 87 pages of info - and one track is 70 minutes long. I would like to read that info as it plays (without starting up several other programmes and searching for the docs!)
It is a multimedia environment so why not have an interactive 'now playing' window that plays related videos - pdfs - as well as stills or EVEN! that can actively search (say google images? or tagged info from wherever) for related pictorial content or other info. I have tried dragging pdfs into the artwork box but it wants the pdfs pages made into jpgs first and separated - altho they can ALL be added at once.
Maybe theres already a script to do this stuff?
Sorry to over extend that idea! But really its quite stupid at present not even to be able to see the other stuff one has put in the artwork box - and it even took a while to guess it could be used (as simple as drag and drop..)
I had no idea the 'now playing' window had buttons - where have they gone!
