Major system lag after 10.5.2 update

Hi,
I just updated to 10.5.2 today. After updating, I noticed that there is horrendous system lag which renders the computer almost unusable. I tried repairing permissions but that did not fix it. What should I do? Interestingly, while the machine is updating permissions there is no lag at all. However, after the repair is complete, it starts lagging again.
Thanks

Hmm, thanks for the info but unfortunately I do not use canon printers. I installed my old HP printer software since it was appearing in the console but I still experience a lot of system hang.
Here is some other stuff from the console that appears every time I reboot:

  • Major system lag during reboot after install

had a leopard since release date, and have noticed something recently. It seems when ever I install a 3rd party app, the next time I got to reboot the system lags out with my desktop visible and the spinning gear thingy, but no finder, or dock. It just sits here for minutes until I press the power button to shut it down and then do a hard boot. Next time i go to restart it works fine. Any one else getting this? Is this some new maintenance it does that I am cutting short after over 5 minutes of this "lag" time?

< Just to further update - I am no longer having issues with the "you have installed drivers without rebooting", but every time I do install the X-Fi vista driver, vista hangs on the reboot...it will get to varying stages through the scrolling green bar welcome screen thing, and then will hang. Every time I do successfully boot, it says "No Audio Output Device is installed".
    Any ideas?
    It's getting rather frustrating...

  • System Lagging after Mountain Lion update??

    Hello!
Since I updated my OS X Lion to OS X Mountain Lion, my mac seems to lag almost everytime for so little things. Like if I wanna change my wallpaper and right-click on my desktop to "change background..", it takes like almost 10 second to open the control panel. If I open safari, i take like 5-10 second to open the browser. If I click "yes" to confirm the empty trash, it takes again like 5 second to do it... All those things were instatly before updating to mountain lion and now its laggy..
Anyone have an idea whats happening?? I have an iMac mid 2010 model...
    Thanks in advance!!

Well, I did it what you said and for now the lag for opening safari seems to be done but its still there to open/pop-up windows like the control pannel or to open itunes..

  • Can't open System Preferences after 10.8.4 update

After using the App Store to update from 10.8.3 to the current 10.8.4, I can no longer open System Preference or some of my other vital apps. I repaired permissions after disovering this issue as well as rebooting several times. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

OS X 10.8.4 has damaged some applications. Reinstall 10.8.4 with the Combo installer > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659
The Combo installer reduces the risk of damage Mac OS X and it allows you to install this update in a lot of Macs with a single download. If the Combo installer doesn't work, hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and reinstall OS X

  • Wierd system preferences after 10.4.7 update

So i ran the 10.4.7 update right after the update my speech and universal icons disappeared in the system preferences window. Dunno whats going on. Is there a way to get them back I dont want to have to reinstall os x
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I read a post an hour ago that apple re-released the newer updater 10.4.7 for intel that fix a couple issue related to that particular updater.
Try to re-update, download the latest updater (it should be on the apple sites by now), and re-updater, and hope it will fix the problem.
    Good Luck.

  • Fonts causing major system lag

Some of my fonts are causing my system to get bogged down. (one i downloaded in particular called "City Burn"). I haven't used the font much before (like once on OS 10.5), but now I will be using it all the time in 10.6. I don't recall it lagging in 10.5 the few times i used it, but now in 10.6, it causes so much lag that my presentation software (ProPresenter) can't even transition nicely with it... Photoshop have major lag with it too (though that is less of a problem since i don't use photoshop live ever, so i can deal with the lag)
How do I make my font not cause lag? HELP!

But would that explain why it didn't lag in 10.5, but does in 10.6?
Snow Leopard was essentially a complete rewrite of the OS as 64 bit. This includes the type engine, which still has some glitches. So SL may have problems handling the font that Leopard had no apparent trouble with.
and would RAM errors cause the processor to be running at full?
Yes. Just as a corrupt application can, a bad font (fonts are actually small programs) can cause buffer overflows into RAM that is not assigned to it.
If you have performance issues when just that one font is active, and everything returns to normal when you turn it off, then the font is most definitely bad and shouldn't be used.
    Edit: Is this same font?
    http://www.dafont.com/city-burn.font
If so, that is one BAD font. About a billion points, many overlapping. Ditch it.

  • My iPad Air  is lagging after ios 7.1 update

I noticed that the animations of opening and closing apps take longer than they did previously before update. I also seem to have the same issue with my iPhone 5, too! I thought the whole point of the update was to speed up my devices with the newer operating system, but alas, no.

iPad running slow? How to speed up a slow iPad
    http://appletoolbox.com/2012/07/ipad-running-slow-how-to-speed-up-a-slow-ipad/
If You Think iOS 7 Feels Slow Here’s How to Speed It Up
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • System crash after 10.8.4 update

Hi all, i am using a Mac Mini (mid 2011) with mountain lion. i am having problem with it after the recent 10.8.4 update and now i am pretty much stuck and cant even log in.
    1. the 10.8.4 update
i have a mac air as well and i did update for both using the same network in the office, both failed as i still see the 10.8.4 update in my App Store. i downloaded the combo update and it worked fine with my mac air. but ever since the update incident, my mac mini had been behaving weirdly and is very very slow.
    2. what is wrong
-initially i could still go the the page that allows me to enter my password, but the moment i logged in, there would be a grey spinning icon thingy that wouldnt go away and i cant do anything
-subsequently i can do anything, i cant even log into safe mode, just show the grey screen with apple logo and my cursor
    3. troubleshoot
-i have tried the apple hardware test, said all hardware ok
-used recovery HD to try to fix disk permission, there's a file that cant be repaird but it is one of those error message that can be ignored according to apple
-reset PRAM (the option command p r combo)
    - tried reinstalling OS X from the recovery HD, but the download also hang at the final portion of the progress bar, at the very last bit, from '0 seconds remaining', it jumped to '5 hours' and hasnt move since (i tried this multiple times, always the same problem). i have also checked my internet connection using my other mac, it was ok
    - i have more than 80% free space in my hdd
Prior to this episode i have not added any new software to the mac mini, am really running out of idea of what could be causing the problem. as compared to when i first got it, the login is a bit slow, but i thought that's pretty normal when i start filling up the hdd.

You'll have to do whatever you were planning to do if the machine needed service.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

Sound like your disk drive died.
Start in BIOS setup and see if the bios thinks it has a disk.  If so then you might be able to recover the OS by starting from the OS installation cd/dvd that came with the system.

  • Major Mainstage Problems After 10.5.2 Update?

I just updated to OS 10.5.2, and Mainstage (1.0.2) has started behaving very strangely:-
When idling on a patch (ie. not even playing a note), the CPU usage jumps all over the place - down to 20%, up to 90%, back down to 40%, up again, etc.
It never used to do this! It would take a few seconds to 'settle' on a CPU usage when idle, but after that, it wouldn't jump about!
    Can anyone help?

Well, I'm glad it's not just me!
Zuelito - thanks mate. To be honest, Mainstage was JUST about usable before I upgraded to 10.5.2, but now there really is something badly wrong - even at 1024 buffer it's totally unusable!! Before, at 256, it wasn't this bad at all, I just had to watch what I was playing! I'll go back to 10.5.1 for my practise on Saturday and hope it sorts itself out!
Do you use the latest 1.0.2 with Tiger? I may try and find a disc on eBay, as you suggest, if you really think it makes a big difference to the CPU usage?
My band is going well, cheers. I had a 6-hour practise last week, and Mainstage performed pretty well! Just one droupout (went unnoticed) and I have 45 sets in my set, each with 1-6 patches in them. The main issue is that I have to have a bit of latency, which annoys me, and I'm on the edge of my seat all the time with it

  • *MAJOR* System Failure after Javascript Upd. Can't even Reinstall OS. Help!

I updated my javascript to my white iMac 2.16 Intel Duo (24"), and suddenly I could no longer log into the account (an admin account) that I was signed into when I upgraded. I could signed into the others (1 admin, 1 non-admin). For the 1 account, I would sign in, it would go blue, and then cycle back to the sign-in screen. It was very similar to the Apple post regarding this, except Apple said this was ONLY for the aluminum iMacs. This one is a white 2006 2.16 Intel Duo model.
So, I then I tried to repair permissions. That just about failed (got "stuck") at "47 minutes to go".
So, I started up the iMac off of TechTool5 CD. Repaired permissions that way (a LOT were wrong). I ran the suite of tests, and it said my Directories were seriously messed up. Trying to repair the directories would have caused a loss of 75% of my files, so I canceled it.
A few weeks ago, I bought a new iMac, gave this now-dead one to my wife, had wiped it clean, installed OS 10.5.8 and did an account transfer. I still have her oldr machine to transfer the accounts again, BUT I CAN'T EVEN ERASE THE HARD DRIVE TO CONTINUE! (Read on)
I tried booting into Safe Mode. Didn't work. It cycled from gray/Apple logo screen to blue to black to gray/apple screen ad nauseam until it just shut down. Now I can't even get it to boot up (remember, some accounts used to still work ... now it won't even boot) passed this cycle of gray/Apple logo screen and black until it shuts down. I wanted to just erase and start again, but I cannot. The iMac WILL boot from a TechTool 5 CD, but will NOT boot from An Apple OS Install CD or even an Apple Care CD
I tried to access the iMac's drive via Target Disk mode and my PowerBook 17" (10.4), but while the iMac went into target disk mode, the laptop would not see it.
I went back to the TechTools CD start-up, and decided to repair the Directory ANYWAY, just to get in and then erase the HD. NOW, I cannot even do that. Repair the Directories is grayed out in the TechTool's window!! (It just keeps getting worse!)
I am at a complete loss on what to do now. I have used Macs since 1990 and have never had something like this.
Any suggestions? Even just to wipe the hard drive clean and resinstall ??

OK, I was FINALLY able to get into iMac using the OS DVD that came with the computer. Unfortunately, the darned DVD says that 10.5 cannot be installed on the iMac because 10.4 is not already installed. What?? This is the only DVD that came with it! The iMac came with 10.4 installed, and a 10.5 disk in the box. It did not come with 10.4. What the ****, Apple? How am I supposed to install 10.4 if you never gave it to me?
So, I used Disk Utilities to erase the HD. I put it in Target disk mode, and tried to use older OS discs to install using my laptop or other iMac via Firewire. But the other computers now do not even SEE the iMac as a external disk. It doesn't even show up on the list. OR, in case of the laptop, it showed up, but the installation hangs right at "checking destination" (or something like that). The progress bar does not even move... for over an hour.

  • USB Hard Drive Disappears after 10.6.3 update

My Samsung S2 640 GB USB portable hard drive is missing from Desktop, Finder and Disk Utility-- but visible in System Profiler after 10.6.3 update. It was fine before the update.
Plugged directly into rear of iMac, I changed cables and slots-- no joy. Even tried a double USB cable as there is no external power supply.
Four other USB HDs work just fine in all slots om the iMac , and this Samsung S2 works fine in my MacBook SL 10.6.3
I bought an identical Samsung S2 and it had the same problems-- so it's not the drive.
    Suggestions?

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.

  • System unusable after OS 10.4.10 update !!

Now because installer doesn't work i cannot reload OS 10.4.10 update nor OS 10.4.9 combo update!
    aby idea to help me?
    by

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10.
It is not recommended to use the System Updater in the Apple menu for major updates. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.

  • After 10.5.3 update I have a "Previous Systems" folder (1976-04-01_0145)

After my terrible experience with the 10.5.3 update on Friday (and getting locked out of system, see thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1542395&tstart=0) I have my machine up and running again.
However, I've now discovered that I now have a 'Previous Systems' folder - which is essentially an ENTIRE system, with apps, utilities, etc. - on my machine and it is dated 1976-04-01_0145.
Because of this duplication I am barely able to run my machine as the startup drive is out of memory, all of my apps thing I've never used them before today, etc. . However, I am terrified of deleting one or the other of these two system folders.
I can't even properly backup as the scan takes FOREVER.
    Help! What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

Yes, You should have a previous system folder after an archive and install.
Can you backup everything to a second HD? Or, were you running Time Machine (a good idea). If you can, then you can safely delete many things from the previous system folder. Or, at least enough to begin testing to see if your apps work.
I routinely do and A&I when I upgrade. Then I test all my apps (or at least the important ones and a sample of the lesser ones). I move the previous system folder to a spare disk and keep it around for a few weeks incase I need to copy something over (like fonts).
BTW, I suspect your start up disk is out of space, not memory. Again backing stuff up, particularly on a laptop is a very sound idea and also allows you to manage your stuff better -- older stuff goes on the backup. Despite some problems, Time Machine works well for this as do a number of commercial products.
