Major text headache

ok, so i apparently had tons of bad fonts in my system. i used the fontbook and cleaned them out. surprisingly, i had major fonts like arial font that was corrupt. whatever. so i trashed them. cool.
except now, when i open dvd studio, it won't open some projects or apply certain templates. my guess is because the fonts it's looking for are gone. anyone know any fixes or workarounds? any way of finding out what template uses what fonts so i can redownload them or something? this is very frustrating and annoying.

These fonts are installed by DVD SP:
Font management in Mac OS X: http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/osxfonts.html
To get to and reinstall fonts from your installer disks, you need Pacifist:

• Best-practice for use of object styles to manage image text wrap issues when aiming at both print and EPUB output?

I have a work-flow question about object styles, text-wrap, and preparing a long document with lots of images for dual print/EPUB output in InDesign CC 2014.
I am sort of experienced with InDesign but new to EPUB export. I have hundreds of pages and hundreds of images so I'd like to make my EPUB learning curve, in particular, less painful.
Let me talk you through what I'm planning and you tell me if it's stupid.
It's kind of a storybook-look I'm going for. Single column of text (6" by 9" page) with lots of small-to-medium images on the page (one or two images per page), and the text flowing around, sometimes right, sometimes left. Sometimes around the bounding box, sometimes following the edges of the images. So in each case I'm looking to tweak image size and placement and wrap settings so that the image is as close to the relevant text as possible and the layout isn't all wonky. Lovely print page the goal. Lots of fussy trade-offs and deciding what looks best. Inevitably, this will entail local overrides of paragraph styles. So what I want to do, I guess, is get the images as closely placed as possible, before I do any of that overriding. Then I divide my production line.
1) I set aside the uniformly-styled doc for later EPUB export. (This is wise, right? Start for EPUB export with a doc with pristine styles?)
2) With the EPUB-bound version set aside, I finish preparing the print side, making all my little tweaks. So many pages, so many images. So many little nudges. If I go back and nudge something at the beginning everything shifts a little. It's broken up into lots of separate stories, but still ... there is no way to make this non-tedious. But what is best practice? I'm basically just doing it by hand, eyeballing it and dropping an inline anchor to some close bit of text in case of some storm, i.e. if there's a major text change my image will still be almost where it belongs. Try to get the early bits right so that I don't have to go back and change them and then mess up stuff later. Object styles don't really help me with that. Do they? I haven't found a good use for them at this stage (Obviously if I had to draw a pink line around each image, or whatever, I'd use object styles for that.)
Now let me shift back to EPUB. Clearly I need object styles to prepare for export. I'm planning to make a left float style and a right float style and a couple of others for other cases. And I'm basically going to go through the whole doc selecting each image and styling it in whatever way seems likeliest. At this point I will change the inline anchors to above line or custom, since I'm told EPUB doesn't like the inline ones.
I guess maybe it comes down to this. I realize I have to use object styles for images for EPUB, but for print, manual placement - to make it look just right - and an inline anchor seems best? I sort of feel like if I'm going to bother to use object styles for EPUB I should also use them for print, but maybe that's just not necessary? It feels inefficient to make so many inline anchors and then trade them for a custom thing just for EPUB. But two different outputs means two different workflows. Sometimes you just have to do it twice.
Does this make sense? What am I missing, before I waste dozens of hours doing it wrong?

I've moved your question to the InDesign EPUB forum for best results.

• Is it possible for text to span over two column?

Gurus,
I have a two column document and my Chapter/Book title has to be place center on page over the two column and the paragraph underneath is to be place in each column, i want to used only one text frame for all the text, can i span the Chapter title over the column or just make another frame?

You can create frames anywhere you want. I usually do that -- move the 2 column frame down and insert a new frame at the top. You can connect the top frame with the rest, so the text runs through it (and you can see when and where text reflows), or you can simply let it exist as a stand-alone frame. In both cases you have to move the frame if you have a major text reflow.
A cunning trick that might work for you is to insert a table instead. The table (one row, one column) can be dragged wider than its containing text frame. You will have to move down the text in the right hand side column manually, though.
More control over columns is definitively on my wish list! In ye olde WordPerfect 4.0 (about 1984) one could switch columns on and off at will, anywhere on a page ...

• One frozen Text Conversation

My Blackberry is working fine with one exception.... ONE MAJOR TEXT conversation has frozen. I can't reply to it, I can't open it, and I can't even mark it as open. When that person texts me now, it shows up in a new conversation, BUT, there were a lot of facts, figures and photos exchanged via text that I now cannot access. I've done a battery and sim card pull and re-booted a number of times, but the same thing holds. Can a conversation reach a maximum amount of data? I've deleted other text convos to free up space, but nothing is changing. Please help! Thx.

I have an 8520 and thats the only option I can find - to have messages as a conversation.

• Spaces on right aligned text

Our users are trying to use spaces as padding for right aligned text but it isn't working.
I did a test with the same text in two different right aligned text holders, the second container contains the text that was in the first container as well as several non-breaking spaces at the end. When I debug the results of StringTextLineFactory.createTextLines the widths of both text lines were the same.
This seems like it is a FTE issue since FTE has no concept of right aligned text I could see it just dropping off extra spaces at the end of the text but that is just a guess.
It also looks like RichEditableText does the same thing. In this video i enter "asdf" then a bunch of spaces and it isn't until I enter another character that the space characters are recognized. http://screencast.com/t/NGMzZmNk

We do have a control for using paddingEndIndent but users will be users and they wanted to use spaces. I didn't realize that this functions the same way as the major text engines.
Thanks for the clarification.

• How I Updated to 2.0 - Successfully

Ok after reading so many threads about the 2.0 fiasco some people were having, I was very hesitant to update the firmware to 2.0.
I decided to take all variables out of the equation and just deal with the update. This is what I did YMMV:
1. Updated iTunes to v.7.7
2. Plugged in my phone and let it proceed to synch.
3. When given the option to "download and install" or "just download" v.2.0, I chose to "just download". The purpose of this was to rule out any network related issues.
4. Re-synched my iPhone by "UN-CHECKING" the following: (music, videos, podcasts, ringtones, pictures, contacts, calendars, etc.). Essentially everything was removed from the phone.
5. This left 215mb of "other" on the phone. I can only assume that this was the 1.1.4 firmware because there was nothing left on the phone.
6. I then installed the v.2.0 update. The entire process only took 10-15 minutes, because there was nothing left on the phone to backup. NOTE: (the update will go through three phases, extracting, installing, and verifying. *After the verifying stage is over iTunes will tell you to keep the phone connected as it restarts** During this stage I saw the "slide for emergency" that I hear so many people talking about. I resisted the urge to undock my phone and it restarted itself two more times. After the third time I got the message that my phone was "Activated" and it was "ok to disconnect".
7. Once the firmware was complete I noticed that it took up less room than the 1.1.4 update. Remember I told you that there was 215mb of "other" before the update....after the update there was 210mb of "other". *This tells me that v.2.0 takes up LESS space than v.1.1.4.
8. I then proceeded to re-synch all my music, videos, podcasts, pictures, contacts, etc...
Everything went off without a hitch...like I said YMMV, but I do think it is a good idea to reduce the variables as I did above.
Now some thoughts on some common problems I see here on this forum:
1. Calendars not being synched: Double check which calendar is set as the "default" because it may be displaying a calendar you have no entries on. When I checked mine, I thought the events did not synch until I realized I was looking at the wrong calendar.
2. v.2.0 takes up too much space. I found that it was the opposite (see above). v.1.1.4 took up 215mb and v.2.0 takes up 210mb
3. Lag in text messaging: I experienced Zero Lag...everything is as it should be
4. Google Earth can't find my location: I found that it pretty much pinpointed my location and is in fact more accurate.
5. Bricked iPhone: This may be a result of people undocking the phone as it is still going through the "restart" phases (see #6 above). My phone actually restarted 3 times (two of which showed the "slide for emergency" and the third and final time showed "Phone is activated" and can be "undocked".
6. Headphone volume is lower or barely audible during Podcasts: No problems with audio at all. Volume is the same for music and Podcasts
7. Battery life is reduced: Haven't had enough time to test. Remember to turn off "Push" in your settings.
8. Contacts not scrolling fast enough when tapping "letters" to skip to a corresponding section: I found it to be pretty much instantaneous (no change from 1.1.4 to 2.0)
9. Touchscreen is unresponsive in certain areas: I tested all my icons and they all work perfectly, everything is responsive.
Well this has been my experience...Hope it helps somebody who is thinking about doing the update but unsure what method to choose while doing so.

Good post, and glad to hear you had a solid transition. Mine went well too, though I think I beat the rush.
It's worth noting that the vast and overwhelming majority of headaches people were experiencing were related to download and activation servers (as well as credit check servers for some mobile carriers) being crushed and overwhelmed.
To give you an idea of just how crushed, here are some numbers. In the last year, something in the neighborhood of 8 million iPhones have been sold. That's just shy of 22,000 per day. So the typical traffic is around 22,000 times a day, someone is hitting the server for update/activation.
This weekend, Apple sold 1 million iPhones. In other words, 333,333 phones per day. Holy crap!
As if that wasn't enough, there are 8 million of us out there with the first generation iPhone. Not only do we need to download the new firmware, but we have to install it. The installation process requires hitting the activation server again, to validate the phone. Mind you, not everybody upgraded this weekend, but a few million did. For the sake of argument, we'll assume that's 1 million a day. So, instead of the normall traffic of 22K phones a day, those activation servers got SLAMMED with 1.33 million activations per day.
It ***** that some people had delays and hiccups and a hard time and everything, but completely understandable. With luck things will run more smoothly from here on out.

• JTextPane and Horizontal Scrollbars

Hi there,
I had written an app that included an Event Log, and all was good in my
world.
Then one of the app users commented they would like errors to stand out within the log!
I said "No Problem" but it turns out to be a major bloody headache!!!!!
I was using a JTextArea but after reading some posts on this forum I decided to use a JTextPane. I found some code for changing the font colour, and everything appeared to be working fine ;-)
...until that is I realised my HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED was never needed as the text had started to wrap ;-(
I have tried searching this site and none of the suggestions work for me, the vertical scroll works fine - and I am really stuck. Therefore:
Is there a way to get the Horizontal scroll bar working in a JTextPane?
Is there an alternative to JTextPane that will allow me to control font colour by line?
Do you even know what I am harping on about?
Or should I admit defeat and add a second JTextArea and a button to switch between my two event types??
Any suggestions would be greatly received!
P.S. Below is the edited code that I think is responsible for my problem :0)
public class EventLogGUI extends JPanel
private JPanel jpLog = new JPanel();
private StyledDocument sdLog = new DefaultStyledDocument();
private JTextPane jtpLog = new JTextPane( sdLog );
private MutableAttributeSet mas = new SimpleAttributeSet();
private JScrollPane jspLog;
public EventLogGUI()
this.setBounds( 5, 7, 407, 256 );
this.setBorder( BorderFactory.createLoweredBevelBorder() );
this.setLayout( null );
this.add( jpLog );
jspLog = new JScrollPane( jtpLog,JScrollPane.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS,JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED );
jspLog.setBounds( 12, 25, 372, 180 );
jpLog.setLayout( null );
jpLog.setBounds( 5, 5, 397, 218 );
jpLog.add( jspLog );
jtpLog.setEditable( false );
jtpLog.setMargin( new Insets ( 2, 2, 2, 2 ) );
public void initialiseGUI()
Vector events = uploadEventLog();
String event;
jtpLog.setText( "" );
for ( int i = 0; i < events.size(); i++ )
event = "" + events.elementAt( i );
if ( event.length() >= 8 && event.substring( 0, 8 ).equals( "WARNING:" ) )
StyleConstants.setForeground( mas, Color.red );
else
StyleConstants.setForeground( mas, Color.black );
try
sdLog.insertString( sdLog.getLength(), event + "\n", mas );
catch( Exception e )
}

Hi!
just wondered if you've searched the forum already. If not: always do that before posting.
I searched and found this helpful:
http://forum&threadID=256602
the solution found in that thread is to extend the JTextPane and add a setLineWrap-method:
class JTextWrapPane extends JTextPane {
boolean wrapState = true;
JTextArea j = new JTextArea();
* Constructor
JTextWrapPane() {
super();
public JTextWrapPane(StyledDocument p_oSdLog) {
super(p_oSdLog);
public boolean getScrollableTracksViewportWidth() {
return wrapState;
public void setLineWrap(boolean wrap) {
wrapState = wrap;
public boolean getLineWrap(boolean wrap) {
return wrapState;
} now you can use JTextWrapPane instead of JTextPane:
// instead of private JTextPane jtpLog = new JTextPane( sdLog );
private JTextWrapPane jtpLog = new JTextWrapPane( sdLog );and set JTextWrapPane.setLineWrap(false):
jtpLog.setLineWrap(false);It may not be the non plus ultra, but it seamed to work for me. ;)

• Does the iphone 6 need a new SIM for Apple Pay?

There appears to be some disagreement on this issue. I activated my AT&T iphone 6 by putting my ip5 sim in the new phone. Everything works normally, but I got a text message from AT&T saying that my phone needed a new sim for all network features to work properly. Some people have been told by AT&T that this has to do with NFC/Apple Pay, that even though Apple Pay is built into the phone itself, it still needs some kind of special secure SIM to authenticate the phone or something. Does anyone have a definitive answer either way? It's not a big deal to just go to an AT&T store and get a new SIM before Apple Pay rolls out, but after experiencing a major activation headache on launch day, I'm reluctant to "fix what ain't broke", so to speak.

I've read nothing that indicates you'll need a new SIM for Apple Pay. However, it seems as if the easiest thing to do is to wait until it rolls out, and see if the SIM you have works. It's not as if being unable to use Apple Pay for a day or two should be a big problem.

• RAW image and preview dramatically different

I'm using Aperture 2.1 and am recently finding myself extremely unsatisfied with the rendering of my RAW images created with my Nikon D50.
I am shooting in just RAW (NEF) and sRGB, and am exposing for what I am seeing on the back of my camera. At times I use manual, and others I use the Program setting with a -1.3 exposure compensation since the camera leans too bright; I seem to recall everything exposing correctly until recently. But my memory is shoddy when it comes to how things previously appeared.
The preview before importing shows much the same image that I intended (exposure-wise), as does the quick preview for a second or so during the import process. Shortly after, my pictures all become dull and dark, lacking color and appearing about 2 stops underexposed.
I love photography, but am personally baffled by the issue of color profiles, RAW images JPEG previews, and all that jazz. Nothing seems to explain these adequately, which is why I'm reaching out to those more knowledgeable than me. I am unsure if it's my camera, Aperture, color spaces, or just settings within Aperture or my camera.
Once again, I want to say this is a recent problem, but it may just be that I only noticed recently.

I have exposed to the image on the LCD before and produced wonderful results. Or, at the very least, results that didn't drive me to post on a discussion board.
As per your questions:
--I use 4 different methods to determine how I am exposing my image. In Manual, I use the TTL metering chart in the viewfinder (usually exposing -0.7 to -1.3 so as to compensate for the tendency for the camera's meter to overexpose), the resulting image on the LCD, the histogram, and the in-camera highlights indicator (since, once again, it has a tendency to try and overexpose an image). In Priority modes, I use the camera's exposure compensation setting to set the compensation to -0.7 or -0.1. The resulting JPEG that I see in the pre-import thumbnails and the brief seconds during import are exactly the exposure I want, but when Aperture finishes importing, it's entirely too underexposed. And it's not just that-- the color seems to be worse than it would if it were just simple underexposure... it all feels grey.
-- I use matrix metering most of the time, with spot metering in the rare instance that requires more precise measurement than just tweaking the aperture or shutter up or down a stop or so. Snow or water pictures are a prime example.
Just so we're clear, I know how to use a camera. I know how to expose properly, and in the past year with my camera, I feel I've figured out its quirks. It takes a lot to drive me to discussion boards, as I usually figure out problems myself. But, since the lingo and strange things of digital photography (Color Space, EXIF data, RAW conversion engines, etc.) confuses me sometimes, I am looking for more human help. I haven't had this problem (or this dramatic of a problem) in the past.
The RAW images outside of the last couple of months seem fine (maybe having something to do with the fact that I upgraded to 2.1 from the 1.0 software about 6 months ago and am finally getting back to photography during my summer break). And the JPEGs that I am apparently exposing for are fine as well. It's just after Aperture imports the RAW file that I am having these problems.
Like I said, I want to continue to use RAW. I want it to work like I thought it was working in the past (that is, without major exposure headaches). But I want the image that I thought I was getting. So how do I make Aperture see the same (or nearly the same) image that I am seeing in the JPEG thumbnail? The difference is just too dramatic to pass it off as quirks and be okay with that. And no, at least as the photography part goes, I do not think it's a short between the floor and the camera.

Please has anyone seen this before as I am completely stumped now, I have been through all group policies on the server and can't find anything that would interfere with java in such a way
I have even tried removing the deploy policy for java, uninstalling it, running ccleaner reg fixes and then installing it straight from the website with no luck
Thanks in advance for any help offered,
Adrian

I have the same issue. We have important print production software that depends on Java running in a browser and it has stopped working with 10.5
This means that I cannot deploy 10.5 in a print production environment.
All our web traffic goes through our IIS proxy, and when accessing a Java site I get prompted for an NTLM password. It does not accept any valid passwords, but just re-prompts over and over. The same version of Safari on 10.4.11 works fine with Java as long as all the updates are loaded.
Proxy access in Mac OS X is continually an issue for us, as the current version of Safari cannot access any https sites through our proxy either. I've been forced to install Firefox for users who need access to https sites (which is almost all of them).
We've had issues with our IIS proxy on and off since way back at 10.3 where proxy support would go between working and not working with various patches. This, coupled with the fact that NTLM authentication is much more intrusive on Mac OS (with constant prompting and hassles with the keychain) than on Windows, causes major support headaches for us. I've tried various workarounds with using Authoxy and Squidman, and various keychain settings, but I'd prefer it if the system's built-in IIS proxy support would work better.
It's very frustrating because our IIS proxy has not been significantly changed in over 5 years, but our Macs go from working to not working continually as patches are released. Very poor.
I would love for this to be looked at at Apple, as Mac OS's own proxy panel does not even have as simple an option as "use this proxy server for all protocols" as found in IE on Windows or Firefox on all platforms. This means separate entries in the keychain for all protocols and a huge mess to support.

• Remove or reduce Mac OS after Windows install

This may be an odd question, but first a little background.
I bought the 2011 MacBook Air as my first introduction into the world of Macs and thought it would also fulfil the occasional work duties due to the promises of how easy it is to integrate a Mac into a PC world since MS Office is available on both platforms. For personal use Mac OS has been a breath of fresh air, intuitive gesture support makes browsing and editing photos fun again as well as playing around with using it as a media server, and Keynote has taken over for my presentation needs.
However working as an accountant means MS Excel, Outlook & Sage are central to my working day and due to various incompatibilities in the office, such as Mail & Outlook 2011 failing to work with our office's 2003 exchange server for one, and MS Excel 2011 being very much the poor cousin to Excel 2010 I ended up setting aside a 64Gb (of 256Gb) partition via Bootcamp to run Windows 7.
Little did I expect how good a Windows PC the MacBook Air makes! Maybe it's the SSD drive but this thing easily lives up to the top of the range i7 HP desktops we use in the office so rather than using the Windows partition for the odd bit of remote working which was the plan two years ago, it is now my main work computer. In fact after I added a couple of Displaylonk adapters I now have a four screen set up (3 x 22" 1080p Dell monitors plus laptop screen) which is the envy of the office.
So, I've since replaced my personal Mac needs with a quad core Mac Mini and haven't booted into Mac OS on the laptop for months and as you can probably guess but that 64Gb is running out quite fast.
I know I can't simply resize the partitions without causing possibly major future headaches and all this MBR/GPT/EFI stuff is unfortunately a little over my head so don't want to do anything crazy (like formatting the Mac OS partition which I've considered) without first getting some advice.
I don't really fancy wiping out the Bootcamp installation and starting again if at all possible, and don't mind keeping Mac OS around but I know that it is highly unlikely that I'll ever need it again on my Air and would probably jump for the MacBook Pro if I ever did need a portable Mac again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :-).

Thanks guys, so I guess that means formatting the Mac partition from inside Windows definitely isn't a simple option then.
So... this leaves me with a couple more questions I'm afraid.
Firstly, I've read that Camptune can cause issues later down the road as it doesn't update the partition tables fully (or something?) which can lead to the possibility of losing Bootcamp later on - but that may only be when updating OSX, which is something I don't really plan on doing so may not be an issue for me?
and Secondly, how easy is it to completely purge OSX?
I can't risk losing access to Windows for any length of time as my work life has become ridiculously hectic lately. So I can't really risk trying this until I have had chance to set up another PC as back up just in case something goes wrong. However with space rapidly becoming a premium on the Windows side it is a case of time is running out.

• Any problems opening Illust. 10 files with illus. CS3?

I'm working on a logo in Illustrator 10 at home...my old g4 tower is running 10.3.9...
I'll be using these files on a new laptop, a MBP with leopard...I'll be upgrading to CS3 for Illustrator...
there won't be any major text files, just logo work...mostly type, an acronym...perhaps some mark design like circles, ovals, squares, etc...
anything i need to know about now that won't work when I upgrade and transfer these files to a new computer?...I just want to make sure I don't keep my client waiting while i have a nervous breakdown trying to open and use my files :-)
thanks for any advice...
M

Keep the G4 for backup in case things get out of hand. I'm like you are, still using v10 via OS10.3.9 and have concerns. Wade is correct about text, I believe Adobe rewrote the font engine in CS1 and there was some confusion on how to handle the transition. The problem with a triple upgrade like ours is: 1.) you're upgrading the CPU which affects peripherals and existing system applications like font management, 2.) you're upgrading from Panther to Leopard while totally bypassing Tiger, so there may be issues with missing updates ( although unlikely ) and some vendors not yet ready for Leopard, and 3.) Adobe is trying to keep pace with Leopard w/CS3, so there are probably issues that have not yet been discovered and some that have ( per Wade ). I've done some recent work with CS2 apps via Tiger ( OS10.4.1? ) and Apple's Mac Mini Intel based CPU and didn't perceive any real problems. But, again, those were just generic, education baed machines that didn't have print capabilities, font management, or outside peripherals ( probably the best way to run the system ).

• Java won't work on proxy server!!!!

My company has recently implemented a proxy server. After this, all websites that use java don't work anymore. I have Web Proxy and Web Secure Procy configured correctly but when I enter a Java website I'm asked for user, password and domain, and even with this info the site won't open. Any ideas???
