Make a folio created for iPad viewable on non-tablets

1) I'm creating a folio that is meant to be viewed on the iPad using InDesign, but I also want it to be viewable in a web browser (I'm thinking about just embedding a SWF file?). It's my first one so I'm not sure exactly what I will need to do at the end. I've found tutorials that take me from start to finish for the iPad version, but I don't want to do a bunch of work and then lose functionality for the web version. I would also be interested to know what functionality I would lose if I tried to convert it to HTML5.
2) Second question would be how I can distribute the folio if I don't need it to go through the App Store. I will be sharing it with a known (small) group of users. The research I've done leads me to believe that I would have to have an enterprise license to hand out individual instances of the app. Is this correct? I'm on adobe CC.

1) There is no way to do this as a Single Edition user. You can create a folio for iPad, but that's it.
2) If it's just one or two people you can share the folio with them and they can use the Adobe Content Viewer and an Adobe ID to log in and view it.

Go to destination is unsupported in DPS. You should be using go to url with a navto: command.

  • What programs should I use to make an interactive ebook for ipad?

What programs should I use to make an interactive children's ebook for ipad?

Adobe has a DPS add-on for InDesign (http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-publishing-suite-single.html) and it handles all the page transitions as well as swapping between portait and landscape. I think the way most people work is the pages are built in inDesign and regions of animation from EA are added second. But if every page had full screen animation, I suppose you may want to build your pages in Edge first.

  • Scaling a folio made for ipad to fit on iphone?

    Hi guys,
I'm new to DPS - has been a steep learning curve!
Wanted to ask advice as to best practise for creating folios for multiple devices. All my googling tells me HOW I "could" do it.. but no best practise articles.
So, I've converted a magazine into an iPad (768x1024) folio and its working great on the ipad (except for the iOS8 Youtube bug) - but I was asked to make it work on an iPhone (as a fallback).
So my question was: do I (or is there a way) to simply tell the folio to scale the iPad version to fit on the iPhone screen (letterbox/pillar) or do I need to create a 2nd layout for each acticle? OR.. do I create a separate version altogether?
You advice would be greatly appreciated.

1024x768 folios don't appear on iPhones. You must create either a 480x320, 960x640, or 1136x640 for the folio to appear on the iPhone. The iPhone viewer scales up but not down, so the 960x640 folio won't appear on an iPhone 3GS, and an 1136x640 folio won't appear on an iPhone 4S. One option is to create a set of folio renditions, such as 480x320 and 11360x640, to account for all iPhone devices. Look up "dps renditions" for info.
As far as creating iPhone source files from iPad source files, your best bet is to create alternate layouts in InDesign. There are a number of different approaches you can take, but I like to either center or scale the content and rebuild the design in the alternate layout. If it's an HTML source file, simply create a new folio that's one of the iPhone files and import the HTML articles.

  • Single folio optimized for ipad 1/2 and 3

Is it possible to publish a single app, produced with adobe dps, that is optimized for retina display as well as for the older ipads?
so that a customer could buy the app at itunes, and depending on his device, he gets the ipad1/2-version or the retina-version of the single magazine.

    Bob L.,
Actually, the print parallel is exactly the way I'm approaching DPS. If I'm printing 150 line screen and an image is 150dpi (or anything less than 300dpi), that's an issue that needs to be fixed. I'm not going to just run it and hope the client doesn't notice. The image is either the correct resolution, or below the correct resolution.
In the case of DPS, I am unable to use the correct resolution for both iPad 1/2 and iPad 3 if I want to distribute a single-edition app. What I want is to be able to target devices and ensure the correct resolution folio is rendered on each device. Renditions is exactly the right feature to accomplish this, but it being limited to multi-issue apps is what's tripping me up. I understand the way the feature is implemented now will not allow for it to exist in single-issue apps. My hope is Adobe changes the way it works and considers renditions an essential feature, regardless of the type of app. In other words, renditions as it is now feels like leveraging Adobe's already-existing services to accomplish a great feature, but perhaps a fresh look at the feature is what's needed to move it beyond its current limitations.
As for file size, I did not say I'm not concerned about it. Rather, I said I'm less concerned about it than quality. For our business, quality is top priority. Our clients and customers have a discerning eye. The image comparison I posted above should illustrate the vast quality difference and the folly in assuming 1024 folios look "nearly identical" or "good enough" on the new iPad.
And yes, I realize we can do "the whole thing" with HTML. We create our own webapps, do all of our own hosting and have staff that develops in Rails, Javascript, HTML, etc. Our production staff, however, knows nothing but InDesign. My hope with DPS was to ensure our production staff could create publications for print and use DPS for tablet publishing. But, the more I learn about DPS, the more attractive building our own apps leveraging HTML sounds.
I'm posting my feedback here thinking Adobe might like to know that a small publishing company like ours is evaluating DPS and coming to the conclusion we may be better off moving away from Adobe's tools altogether, including InDesign, and working in HTML.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • How to make a wine catalogue for iPad

I need to create a wine catalogue with wines listed by name/variety/price/region etc to be viewed on the iPad. It needs to be available to view offline as the reps for the company travel to remote areas. Have tried interactive PDFs but found everything has to be contained in one file which becomes very big. Any suggestions as to what to create it in? My boss isn't keen to make a website as we'd have to employed someone externally to put it together.

Hi Allan, thanks for you speedy reply.
Sorry, should have mentioned that I've designed the look of the catalogue so the solution will need to be able to adopt this. From the looks of it, Bento's wine ap comes with a predesigned template, is that right?

  • How to make video screensaver for iPad?

    Dear all,
does any one know how to make a video screensaver for iPad? We plan to use iPad's (with iOs7) in our retail shops and we want them to role video screensavers (while iPad is locked). I know that Apple Demo has it.
And did I miss something but in previous iOs versions there was possibility to make photo slide show when iPad is locked and now in iOs7 it is not possible? Or is there a work around?
    Thanks!

The slide show on the lock screen feature has been removed from iOS. However, there are apps that will let you create slide shows. There are probably ones that will loop videos as well. You should be able to combine one of these with the Guided Access feature (which restricts the iPad to one app) to do what you want. Search the App Store for slide show apps. Review the information in the manual for Guided Access.
    Best of luck.

I have created a spreadsheet on numbers for ipad with a list of customers as a drop down menu. How can i make their address appear underneath when I select the customer?
    iselect the customer?

    Hi bazza,
We won't be able to put the address from a formula into the same cell that you enter the customer's name. We can put the address in the cell under the customers name.
First let's take James advice and concatenate the address in the address table.
Here is the formula in G2
    =CONCATENATE(B2&"
    ",C2&"
    ",D2&"
    ",E2)
It shows this way because after I clicked on B2 and typed [&"] (no brackets) I typed option-return
This gives you your new line. Then I typed the closing ". I repeated this for the rest of the address.
Next we want to bring this to your order sheet. I prefer using the two formulas OFFSET and MATCH instead of VLOOKUP.
base tells OFFSETwhere to start counting from. Click A1.
row-offset is for the row. we will use MATCH() -1 to give us the row.
What MATCH does is give you the row number where something is found and you can specify an exact match. I usually construct the MATCH formula first and then cut and paste it into OFFSET. MATCH looks like this: MATCH(A2,Table 1::A,0). A2 is what we are looking for, Table 1A::A is where we are looking (the entire column A), and 0 means we want an exact match. Can you see it inside the OFFSET formula? Notice that we had to subtract 1 from its result.
column-offset tells OFFSET which column A=0 so we want 6.
we ignore "rows", "colomns" we don't need them.
If this seems like too much, just break it down into small pieces.

  • Do I need to upgrade my CC Account to create a folio app for non-iPad devices?

    Hello,
I have never created a DPS app, but have been researching this for the last 4 weeks.  From what I understand, I can create a DPS app for iPad using a single edition or a multifolio app.  If I want to create a DPS app for any other device, I would need to create a multifolio app.  I have only a Creative Cloud account, but I believe that I will need a Professional or Enterprise account to create multifolio apps.  Is there another way that I could create apps for Android, iPhone, etc devices without having to upgrated my account?
    Thank you.

Your research and understanding is correct. If you want to use DPS to target anything other than an iPad you need Professional or Enterprise edition.

  • EPUB, .PDF, or .Folio for iPad Book?

I am attempting to convert a bilingual childrens book into an iPad Viewable app but I find much of this confusing.
There is English and Hmong text on each page... Is there a way I could create the digital book so the user could select which language would be read to them as they turn the pages? Or would I only be able to have it read in one or the other? I could have buttons on each page that play each language though right? With what types of publications would I be able to accomplish which task? Any other options?
Also, must I create a .folio in order to have the document viewable horizontally and vertically as the user turns the ipad, (as In I create two versions of each page) Or can I do that with other exported file types?
Finally, If you have a link to the most helpful resource on any of this I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank You for your time,
    Ryan

You should ask questions relative to creating folio files to the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/dps
There are severe limitations to using PDF files on iPads because the PDF readers are very immature. Most of the applications don't support interactivity. Here are two postings I did on PDF readers:
For Interactive PDF, Not All Readers Are Equal
A Much Improved Adobe Reader for Tablets Appears
EPUB files currently only support Latin languages. When I did an EPUB file that used Sanskrit, I had to rasterize the language (it was only short sections). InDesign CS5.5 or CS6 would let you choose the image resolution up to 300 ppi. Of course, you could then not interact with the text because it would be a picture.

  • Make a folio for every device

    Hi,
I want to publish a folio for every device. I have made one for the iPad 3 (2048x1536px, PDF) and now I want to publish this on devices like iphone, nexus 10, iPad 2 etc.
    But how to do this?
If I create a folio in the resulution of the iPad 2 it will also be visible on the iPad 3, but not on the Galaxy S2 because of the PDF. If I create it as JPEG it works on iPad 3 + iPad 2 + Galaxy S2 but without zooming and thats important for me (because of details).
So how to make a folio for every device which can view folios?
    Greetings

You need DPS ( Professional Or Enterprise ) edition.
