Make a hard drive attached to the Airport Extreme work with Time Capsule?

I have an external hard drive attached to my airport extreme that shows up on my desktop as if it was attached locally, but time machine recognizes it as the wrong format. In the Get Info screen, the drive's format appears to be 'Appleshare', when it is actually Mac OS Extended (Journaled). How can I make it appear as Mac OS extended again?

There is nothing wrong. The drive will appear as Appleshare since the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is providing file sharing services. That should not be a problem for Time Machine use.

  • VERY slow data transfer to my hard drive attached to the Airport Extreme

    Hi
Ive got a Macbook Pro and Mac Pro. In order to access large files from both I got a 2TB drive connected to my Airport Extreme and it shows up fine in both Macs under SHARED.
When I copy files from and to that harddrive from my Macbook Pro its impressively fast. Seems as fast as a USB stick.
However when I try to do the same with my Mac Pro its extremely slow. A 1GB file takes about 15 minutes.
Are there any settings that I might have overlooked on the Mac Pro?
    Thanks
    Jorg

This won't be of any help for you , but I happen to have the exact same problem. My AEBs is linked to a LaCie external HD, my wireless network include a macmini aluminum, a Macbook Air, a MacBook Pro, a MacPro Dual-COre Intel 2.66 GHz. . Everything works fine expect for the MacPro which is painfully slow to get data to and from. The MacPro Airport Card is of the Airport Extreme type (0x14E4, 0x87), like my other macs…
I use WPA2 with a n protocol to connect to the base station.
Still at a loss about this issue, wonder how to solve it…

  • Does the Airport Extreme work w/Time Capsule (as prior info. said?)

Seems to me that any person contemplating the purchase of a new Airport Extreme should at least be able to see both what it is and is not capable of doing... Time Machine does not support a properly mounted Airport Extreme disk. Period. Unless this is the darker side of the product-- or lest this technical incompatibility is found to be "inappropriate" subject matter, I see no reason why this is not a valid technical question to be answered by Apple.
Why does the AE not fully support the feature-set of Leopard? Time Machine incompatibility is a serious and costly issue for all of us who bought AE's just weeks prior to Leopard's release...
Apple did indeed state (prior to release), that Leopard and Time Machine would fully support the Airport Extreme's disk-mounting feature. This is no longer the case, however, and it seems that Apple simply does not want this subject to be brought to light... This is a technical problem that can (and should) be solved via new software for the AE, or within Leopard itself.
I have been told to "call Customer Relations about this instead"-- however, no phone number was provided. In my experience, that department has proven to be incredibly difficult to connect with via Tech. Support. Why can't this issue be addressed here? Technical. Software. Hardware. Leopard.

Actually it does. If you rant about a feature missing or spam the forum (which you did both) it will be removed. Read the Terms of Use you agreed to when you signed up:

This is a technical incompatibility, and as such, has a valid place in this forum.
Not really. Its a missing feature, not an incompatibility. Incompatibilities are things that a product should be able to do but can not due to conflicts. The AEBS was never compatible with the retail version of Time Machine, nor was it every said to be compatible with the retail version so its is a missing feature.

  • How do I access an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme using the Finder's "Go to the folder" feature?

How do I access an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme using the Finder's "Go to the folder" feature?
I have an external hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme and I can access it just fine through Finder.  I would like to be able to keyboard navigate to it in an efficient manner.  I tried to use the "Go to the folder" feature but was unable to.
I had tried dragging the drive to the Network folder but the shortcut it created does not lead to the drive's contents...it seems to lead right back to the parent directory:
I hope I explained the question well.  Thank you for all of your help and time in tending to my inquiry.

Cant you set up "back to my mac" then go to finder preferences and put a check mark under everything under the shared location. Also set up back to my mac on your airport extreme.

  • I have the new iPad and am looking at this product as a external hard drive (Can I pictures /videos or any other file wirelessly to the conected hard drive attached to the airport ????

CAn I write files to the hard drive conected to the airport extreme?

It is technically possible, but not out of the box - and limited.
    How-to:
Once you have setup the USB-Drive on the Aiport Extreme and configured sharing you need an app on the iPhone/iPad. I have successfully used "GoodReader". However there might be others/better.
(In Goodreader the Airport Extreme should show up on the right hand bottom as AFP if your iPad and Airport Extreme are on the same WLAN.)
    The limit however is:
    - Works ONLY with files IN the Goodreader app (NO iPhotos, iBooks, ...)
    - can only MOVE files/folders to/from the harddisk or delete them (can automatically sync, which might be nice)
    - can NOT open files ON the harddisk - needs to download to iPad first
    - can NOT create folders on the harddisk either
    - nor can you move them around on the harddisk, it's always download/upload to the iPad first
Unfortunately I haven't found anything better. From memory:
Samsungs Goflex Satellite and Kensingtons Wi...something (could be wifi, not sure now) can only "stream" stuff to the iPad - and they too need an(other) app for that!
However if somebody knows anything better - I'd be eager to know, :-)

  • HT201250 Time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme

How can I setup a time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme? Even better for time managment purposes I want to use the Eithernet Thunderbolt connection for the first back up and then through the wifi there after for daily routine Time Machine back ups.

You can attach a hard drive, but Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple, so it's not possible to say what your actual results might be.
If you decide to try this, it would be wise to have a secondary backup plan in place as well.

will the airport extreme work with Iphone 4 and Ipod 3 gen without a pc or mac.

You can setup an Airport device using the Apple Airport Utility for iPhone
Download it for free in the App Store on your iPhone...
It's under "Utilities" and the "Top Free" utilities.

  • Can i use time machine with a hard drive connected to the airport extreme?

Just wondering if there is any news on this since the last post was in 2008.
The Apple website info regarding the Airport Extreme mentions attaching a hard drive to the Airport Extreme, but I can't see whether that could be used for a Mac using Time Machine.

  • How can I get two hard drives connected to the Airport Extreme. There's only 1 USB port.

I believe I want to use TWO USB Hard Drives with my Airport Extreme, but it seems there is only 1 USB port.
I am currently using that USB port for my backup external hard drive (works with Time Machine). But now I have decided I want a common hard drive for music, photos, etc. for the two Macs in my home to share. I read that you do that via the same port.
What should I do? Is there a way to use 2 hard drives - a common shared and one for time machine?
    Please advise and thank you!

    Use a (powered) USB hub.
I am currently using that USB port for my backup external hard drive (works with Time Machine).
I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

  • Having problems seeing multiple hard drives attached to my Airport Extreme.

I just bought a refurbished Airport Extreme from Apple.com. I set it up and have been able to access my powered, 1 TB desktop hard drive, but when I attach a powered USB hub and two additional hard drives that are not powered (they're both portable, USB-powered drives), I'm usually only able to see my 1 TB desktop drive. When I can see them, it's only through the Airport Utility app and it says they're 0 mb drives. I'm never able to see them in Finder. I'm never able to drop anything onto either of the drives. Only the 1 TB drive. If anyone knows why and can help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

    How are the portables formatted?
NTFS and ExFat are not supported: [AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule: USB storage device supported formats and protocols|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2426].

  • Unable to connect to the hard drive connected to the airport extreme.

I have a new Aiport extreme base station and a usb hard drive is connected to it. But mac air is not finding it. Couldn't see it in the finder.
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, the AirPort cannot share out a drive formatted in either NTFS or ExFat. It must be in either HFS+ or FAT32. If the AirPort Utility can't recognize the drive, it can't be shared.

  • How will an external Hard drive designed for the macbook Pro work with my White Macbook?  My  white macbook has a Firewire 400 and the G-Tech HD has a 800 to 400 compatible cable for the firewire.

I am asking this because I want the G-Tech Hard drive  says that it is designed for the macbook pro.  Yet, I want to back up faster with by using my firewire 400 which is not an option on the one designed for the white macbook that does not have a firewire (only a USB port.)  The G-Tech Hard drive comes with the 800 to 400 compatible cable and has 5400 RPM with 750 GB.  Also, I've heard that laptops with low battery (mine all the time)  won't have the power for a bus powered Hard drive (as in no ac plug in adaptor.)  Can I just plug in my laptop?  Any one know the answers from experience with this hard drive?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

  • I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device

I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device. If so would I have to format it with two partitions , one for time machine and the other for network storage. Aprreciate any advice

If you have the hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme....it is a network storage device.
One issue that you may want to think about is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a hard drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme.
In spite of this, some users who try this are able to make it work. Others have some limited success and some have no success.
It's not supported....so there will be no help from Apple in the event of problems.
If you decide to proceed with this, make sure that the partition for Time Machine backups is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as other formats will not work with Time Machine.
Having a secondary backup plan would also be something that you might want to consider.

  • External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.
