Make a hole & round a square psd

I've search for hours and give up.
How do I make a transparent hole in CS6? I've tried the ellipse tool>stroke>blend opacity to 0, but that just clears the gray circle. It does not create a clear hole.
Just so you know, I have a square psd in a file with numerous other layers and I want to make it round and put a transparent circle in the center to make a DVD label. That's what I'm after and I can't believe I forgot how to do this.
Thx everyone.
Paul

Paul,
There are a couple of ways to do that, depending on your Layers.
Basically, create you ~ 25 - 43mm (depends on the hub design of your disc) Circle (Elliptical Marquee Tool, constrained to Center & Circle with the Alt & Shift keys - I would also do perpendicular Guides for the exact center of the Image). You now have your Circular Selection. Hit Ctrl+Shift+I to Invert that Selection. Here, I would Save Selection. Then, with that Inverted Selection active, create a Layer Mask.  If you have Layers stacked in that area, just repeat the process for each. That is why we Saved that Selection, though you could get it back with other techniques. Before you do that, you might ask yourself about those other Layers. Personally, I would first Save that Layered PSD, then Flatten, so you only "punch" one hole, but that is your choice.
For the outter knockout, just repeat the process, but with a larger Circle. Note: many printers do not require that outer circles, as they will limit the ink coverage to just the DVD/CD, but I like to clean things up, as few DVD's/CD's allow printing to 100% of the diameter, and there is no sense possibly spreading some ink on the tiny area outside of the printable surface. It just depends on your printer, and its driver.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Create shape with round and square corners

    Hi all
I haven't used illustrator for a while so I'm really stuck on soemthing that should be simple.
I want to create a shape that has round corners on the bottom and square cormers at the top.
I have created two shapes, one with round corners and one with square one.
I was hoping to put them together then use the pathfinder to unite them but this then make the round corner square.
Is it possible to unite shapes with different corners.

    myttmt,
Or create a rounded rectangle that is one corner radius too high, press C (Scissors Tool) and cut at the top of the straight sides (first right then left), press V to switch to the Selection Tool and delete the selected top cut, then select the remaining part and Ctrl/Cmd+J to join.
The bottom rounded rectangle thread lives. Or is it the tanker cross section thread?

  • Make a Hole Through a Bunch of Objects

I have a number of objects stacked on top of each other and I want to make a hole through them all so that when I save the finished artwork as a web image the hole will be transparent.  A bit like a donut but it's not just a circle with a hole in it.  It's all these other shapes piled on top of each other.
I've thought about the Eraser Tool but my hole needs to be quite precise (and there are to be four seperate holes).  I have looked at making a clipping mask but I can only really find tutorials that show me how to clip like making a photo vignette and I've thought about Pathfinder but that makes my head ache a little.
    Thanks
    Martin

I have AI in CS5 and a PC running Windows 7 and am struggling to get this to work.
I drew a line running across the artboard, then placed a large circle on top of the center part of it, and then a small circle on top of the large circle.  My goal is to make the small circle transparent so that when I import the image to a book cover I've created in InDesign, the background color on the cover will show through the hole AND show the line.
I selected the smaller circle, then went to the Transparency palette and selected Knockout Group.  The line doesn't show through.  I then selected both circles and then clicked on Knockout Group.  Still no change.  Some kind of an instruction is missing.
Is there something about the formatting of the circles that needs to be done?  (Like perhaps the smaller circle needs to be formatted with no color in it?)  Do all objects need to be on different layers?  (Mine are all in the same layer, because I'm warping them, too.  I don't know if that effect will work with several layers involved.)  Or something else?  There has to be an easy answer.
I'm also not seeing two separate circle selections with the chain link between them in the correct answer above, but then again, that answer was given in 2008, and here we are in 2013.
    Thanks,

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • How to make only one round corner?

    HI,
How can I make only one (or 2) round corner on a square using the round corner effect?

You don't say what version you're using, but I know that in CS3 (and probably CS4), there is a script installed that you can use.
Draw your frame. Open the Scripts panel. Open the subfolders "Application", then "Samples", then "Javascript". With your Frame selected, double-click the script in the list named "CornerEffects.jsx". You'll be presented with a list of options to control what type of corner; and at the bottom the pop-up menu controls which corners get that type of corner.
(Names may vary somewhat for CS4.)

  • Bridge Plugin: Make comments and see layers in PSD and TIFF files

I've been searching the interweb thin for Bridge plug-ins without luck.
I work in a production company and we have a quite intense QA process meaning that we compare images against each other and return feedback to editors.
So instead of cycling through applications it would make our life so much easier to just stay inside adobe bridge.
What I'm looking for is a plugin for Adobe Bridge with following attributes:
    1. leave comments and notes on images
    2. See layers in tiff and PSD files
I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this request, but I figured that this was the best place to ask.
Ps. it is not important what version of Bridge it will be compatible with (but preferable cs6)
    Best regards
    Mick

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this request, but I figured that this was the best place to ask.
These feature requests better be placed in the correct location:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family
You also might get a better answer but I'm not sure what way you need to leave comments and notes. You already have the option to label and rate the files and of course you have the IPTC Metadata to leave comments in (e.g. IPTC status / instructions).
As for the request to view layers, that would be nice but certainly not easy to realize. But it might be useful to extend this request in more detail, about how would you see them. Currently the preview window has a max of 9 files to view in one panel, would you see them scrollable or together in one window? Some layers have only masks or brush corrections in masks, would you see them in the same way as in PS using alt click on a mask?
The more detailed you make your feature request the better chance in getting more votes and better replies in possibility etc.

  • Round and square brackets in regexp

    Hello,
Can someone please explain to me what is the difference between:
    SELECT REGEXP_INSTR('aoeeeeo','(i|e)o') position FROM dual;
    and
    SELECT REGEXP_INSTR('aoeeeeo','[ie]o') position FROM dual;
I mean, what is the main difference between round brackets with the alternation operator and square brackets in regular expressions?
    Thank you very much,

It will perhaps be clearer if you look at it with more than just single characters...
    SQL> select regexp_replace('this is fred and his test string', '(is|and)','XXX') from dual;
    REGEXP_REPLACE('THISISFREDANDHISTES
thXXX XXX fred XXX hXXX test string
    SQL> select regexp_replace('this is fred and his test string', '[isand]','XXX') from dual;
    REGEXP_REPLACE('THISISFREDANDHISTESTSTRING','[ISAND]','XXX')
thXXXXXX XXXXXX freXXX XXXXXXXXX hXXXXXX teXXXt XXXtrXXXXXXg
SQL>The round brackets allow you to specify whole strings whereas the square brackets allow you to specify sets of individual characters.
Therefore in my first example it looks for IS or AND and replaces those.
In the second example it looks for any occurence of the characters I,S,A,N,D and replaces those.

  • Round vs square power adaptor iBook G3 500

Just bought a g3 500 ibook as a travel / backup / disposable / whatever, works fine but it came with the round power adaptor & I already have a number of square ones lying around. The light in the top of the power plug doesn't change color but apart from that, the square ones seem to work. Any danger here?
(mysteriously ebough, the battery from the old G3 ibook I bought this one to replace seems to have crawled out of the grave and is now holding a substantial charge -- weird.)

However, that adapter ring should change color from amber to green once the battery is charged, regardless of the model of G3 (Dual USB) iBook.
Congratulations on what seems to be a great deal!

  • How to turn a square into a circle or a rounded corner square automatically?

    Hello all,
I have read old threads and similar questions and found part answers including an illustratir action that doesn't work in CS4 and after. Apologies if I have missed other relevant answers.
Here is a descrition of what I would like to achieve. I have all kinds of shapes - either rectangular or square - in a drawing in phtoshop. Note that some of the shapes are not entirelly filles (do they're like a thick stroked line in a rectangular shape. I want to "round" each shape to a different extent, from giving a shappe rounded corners to making it totally round or oval (respectively for a square of rectangle of course).
So I want to select each shape in turn and apply a degree of "rounding" to each shape individually. Since there are many such shapes, I am looking to automate the process save for the parameter that defines the amount of rounding.
I suppose what I am asking is whether anyone knows of an Action that does just that. Failing that, could someone tell me how I can do this manually and I will try to write an action thereafter.
    THank you for your help

There are a few ways to do this although none of them are both easy or precise.
The first thing to find out is what kind of shapes they are.
    Look at your Layers panel.
What are the objects on? Is it a Shape Layer like the Rectangle layer in the following image? Or is it a regular layer as in the second layer in the following image?
If it's a shape layer, you'll need to use Illustrator. But it won't be simple.
If it's a regular layer you can do it in Photoshop, but it won't be easy.

  • How do I make one corner rounded?

    Hey,
Firstly, I'm using Illustrator CS6. I'd like to round a specific corner of a shape (a rectangle to be specific). I've seen in other posts that the CornerEffects.jsx script should work. But every time I select my rectangle, go to File > Scripts > CornerEffects.jsx I get this pop-up.
    Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
    Cheers,
    Laurence

    Laurence,
Among the silly (non) solutions is this, using the Effect>Stylize>Round Corners:
    1) Create the basic rectangle and copy it;
    2) Add one Anchor Point to the copy rectangle and move the corner Anchor Point away from the corner so both Anchor Points are further from the corner than the greatest conceivable rounding, then Direct Select the slanting segment and delete it if you (wish to) have a stroke round the final shape;
    3) Apply the round corners effect to the original (Effect>Stylize>Round Corners).
You may change the rounding by trashing the rounded corner effect (or reducing to basic appearance) in the Appearance palette and redoing it.

  • ApplicationControlBar with top edges and bottom round off square

desire to make a  ApplicationControlBar as the image that follows below. I searched the internet and found nothing that helps me to  change the edges of the object

    Hi,
If you create an application skin then find the section topGroup, you just add each corner radius in, below is thesection with  left top corner radius
    added.

  • [Adobe Photoshop CS2] How to make a layer round like a circle?

Hey there, I have a png-file, which shows our bandname (http://i.imgur.com/qbrWWs0.png). I now want to shape it like a circle, because we want to print it on buttons. How can I do that? I already tried it with the warp tool, but that result isn't satisfying. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers Thomas

If you have the font you can easily create a circular path to put the font on. may be easier to read then the Polar distortion
Warp does not look good as you saw

  • Can anyone help me with something? I need to make a hole in a JPanel -_-

    Hi everyone,
First of all, this is my first time writing here. Nevertheless, my knowledge about Java is not vast but still it helps me somehow. My problem is, I am writing a program that has a JFrame with a JPanel added to it and I need to draw a visual object to the top with a circle between JPanel and the object. It's like old James Bond intros you see; black screen with moving white circle with James Bond in the middle, moving with the spotlight. In fact, what I did was nothing more than putting a JPanel with black background and a white oval with same coordinates with the object. Although it gave something nice as I described above, I can't put any other objects to be hidden behind the black JPanel. It seems I got to drill the JPanel to see the white frame background to put my Bond there and put every other objects behind the JPanel. My aim is that other things will appear, emerge when they come to white circle(white light as I call it). I can move other objects, I just need them to be hidden behind the curtain. Can anyone help? I hope I described clearly.
    Regards,

Your question may be better aske over at Illustrator
