Make a PDF with a Mac, NOT using Mac PDF maker

I am suffering from blurry text when making a PDF in Mac OS 10.6 (using "Save as PDF" in the Mac printing dialogue).
The software company has confirmed the problem. They suggested using CutePDF to make a PDF because it does a better job. CutePDF is Windows only.

Also, could it be a problem with the software you are using (you didn't mention what it is?)
It is ViaCAD 2D. My text is razor-sharp when viewed from within ViaCAD. However, when I make a PDF of my drawing using, File > Print > Print PDF my text comes out blurry.

"This is an old and contentious issue that appears to effect some Mac users and not others.
The only work around I have found is to print to EPS (Postscript) in the print dialog, and then convert the EPS to PDF in Preview. Sadly the EPS output from the print dialog is also broken in that it will not support anything larger than 8.5 X 11, so that will not work for you.
The other work around might be to try and export the whole drawing to Illustrator using the File / Export dialog, but again that is also sometimes buggy for some people. The only good news is that the output that appears blurry on your Mac will probably look fine on a PC, or even another Mac as this does appear to be a very system dependent bug (which is why it never gets fixed)."

You should be able to input any size you want into both fields. If not reinstall acrobat or manually assign a correct PPD. System Preferences >>Print & Fax >> Adobe PDF >> Options >> Driver

Basically, I will have to create a pdf form where users fill it and send it back to me. there will be required fields (the textbox and check box) that user need to fill before saving the editable pdf?

Thanks for reply. What I am trying to achieve is to give an option for the user to download the pdf form and once the user tries to save the pdf, it validates with the required field. I managed to create the editable pdf with required fields option. I just need that validation to be done when user click on save file. How can I achieve this? thanks so much for your help.

Eliminate popup with information 'Do not use "Back" button'

Hello,
when your cursor is not focused in a ui-Element than in case of typing the back key, a popup open with message: please not use it. It is the same information in case of using the back button.
Q. Is there a possibility to prevent the popup. Not the function behind, only that the popup will not open?

Hi Christian,
There is no way to suppress the pop-up for your case . it is comming from the WD controllere. Just put the focus on any UI element then click on BACK manually.

Identifying files on mac/not on mac

I want to be able to identify all files my external hard drive that are not on my mac and partition these off in the external hard drive then use the other part of the partition to back up my mac with time machine.
I know one option could be to use the label function to label files, on mac/not on mac but this would be awfully tedious – is there an easier way to search through all these files to identify which files are and are not are my mac?
Also as hard drive space begins to fill up on my mac I would also want to be able to move some files off the mac into the “files not on mac” partition of the external hard drive in order to free up more space but still have backups of everything. How can I do this?

Apple's built-in options are spotlight and a couple of terminal commands such as "locate", but nothing will scour two drives and compare files. With these you'd have to manually find a file and then search your main drive for the same file. There might be some third-party solutions, and you might try searching for "file compare" or some similar keywords at http://www.versiontracker.com to see what comes up. You might be able to set up something in Automator, but I'm not exactly sure how that'd be done. The spotlight searching using Automator is rather limited.

I need help with Distiller, telling it to make PDFs with bookmarks hidden, not showing up by default. Can I use PDFmarks?

An editor at my company was complaining about bookmarks. They show up as soon as she opens a PDF. And, I have to say, it is kind of bothersome. Because, the bookmarks view takes up half her screen. Of course, she can just click on the icon to hide them. But, she shouldn't even have to do that. Isn't there some way, with PDFmarks, that I can tell Distiller to do this? To, yes, create the bookmarks, but, hid their view until asked for?
I'm on a Mac. But, these PDFs are being created on Sun Solaris machines. The editors use Windows.

The default is "none" - it is not to open with bookmarks. It's entirely separate from whether the file has bookmarks. So you probably already have a DOCVIEW PDFMark in the PostScript file.

How can I create a PDF with embedded fonts (not a subset of the font) from Excel?

I need to create PDF's from Excel spreadsheets. The PDF needs to have embedded fonts but every time I create one it only has a subset of the embedded font. I have tried setting preferences in the Acrobat add in (unchecked the "Subset Embedded Fonts" option and also tried with the Subset Embedded Fonts checked but the percentage set to only 1% in an attempt to force full font to be embedded.)
I also tried opening the resulting PDF with Acrobat Pro XI but could not figure out how to add the font in.
A method to accomplish the results from either tool would be great.

Unless you can add those fonts to your system via the Font book and then substitute them in iPhoto, you'll have to either user the available fonts or create your own pages, 8.5 x 11, in an image editor like Photoshop Elements and use them on pages that are one photo per page. Other's have done that with some success.
If you has PS or PSE create an 8.5 x 11" canvas at 300 dpi. Then you can add your photos, add text (if PS can use the text), and create your own layout.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. Making a PDF with "Outline" and Bookmarks Using Pages

Hi, I'm using Pages 1 and I have tried making a PDF with outline breaks but I failed. I thought using paragraph styles for my document would work but when I exported my document to PDF, all I got was a PDF that only has the thumbnails view but not the outline view. Also, when I exported my document that has bookmarks to PDF, all the bookmarks don't work anymore. How can I make a PDF document using Pages with all the bookmarks and the organization just like other PDFs that I encounter? Thanks

welcome to the Pages Discussions. If I remember correct, in Pages 1.x there is no way to export text links to PDF. An outline view creation doesn't exist.
If you want to have links in PDF (of the TOC, too), then you should upgrade to iWork'06. But outline view doesn't exist here like it doesn't in version 1.x.

This forum is for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Since that version won't run on your PowerMac, you're not likely to get many helpful responses here.
In any case, I'll try to offer some basic troubleshooting suggestions:
The PS designation on your printer denotes the PostScript printer language. Is your applications software and current printer driver configured to send PostScript (or HP-GL or HP-PCL or ???)
Does ANY application print anything (even gibberish) to the printer?

Does the printer time-out with every program, or just one? Have you tried another cable?
OS X 10.5 Leopard is no longer sold by Apple. It was never sold as a download, sold only on CD/DVD disc. Discs might still be available for purchase on eBay.
OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" is the oldest version of OS X still sold by Apple, and it too is available ONLY on CD/DVD for $20, but it will not run on your PowerMac, because Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor: os x snow leopard requirements

How is the printer connected to the computer? Are you using a USB interface, a Centronics 'Parallel' interface, or a JetDirect network interface?
It appears that the network timeout default for the printer was 30 minutes, but it can apparently be set in the range of anything 30-seconds and longer. The manual notes that some software does not send an 'end of job' postscript marker, so that is the reason for the time-out setting.

Photos page not using .mac

I was wanting to know how to get my photo slideshow to play on my site? I am not using a .mac account. I have my own domain and hosting....
Also, how do you make it where when someone goes to your pics page and clicks on a pic, the picture enlarges to it's full size or bigger size?

If you upload everything properly, your slideshow should work. Its just not the same black slideshow as .Mac gets, its the old homepage-style slideshow. It resides in a folder that should be part of your site called slideshow_assets.

This is a .Mac only feature. You can manually make pictures do this with post-publish editing.

My mac not using inactive memory

I have a MacBook Pro, early 2011 version 10.6.8 / 2GHz Intel Core i7.
I had 4GB RAM originally but upgraded to 8GB.
I started having heat-up / fan issue about 3 months ago and brought my mac to apple store but it didn't solve any problem, so I tried upgrading the RAM. (My mac would heat-up and fan goes crazy much more often than before) It still didn't solve the problem. I have ADOBE products and use them often. 4GB to 8GB upgrade didn't make much difference.
I am kind of giving up with this issue, and am trying not to care... Today, I opened my mac, opened ADOBE Bridge and FireFox. When I was using ADOBE Bridge, the fan was going crazy, so I opened up the activity monitor and realized "INACTIVE" memory is very high and there was only like 10MB of free memory. From my understanding, I thought whenever more free space is needed, "INACTIVE" memory will be used, but my mac seems like it does not want to use the "INACTIVE" memory. Even after completely closing both ADOBE Bridge and FireFox by selecting QUIT, the "INACTIVE" memory is still over 5GB. All I did after opening my mac (not from sleep mode, but it was shut down before opening) was using ADOBE Bridge and FireFox. I closed both of the applications and the "INACTIVE" memory is still very high. Could anybody explain why this is happening and if this is normal? I attached a screenshot of the activity monitor I made when I was only using FireFox after quitting ADOBE Bridge. Thanks for your help!

I can not use the Acrobat DC Cloud. How do I get an Acrobat PDF Reader that does not use the Cloud?

The subject pretty much says it all.
I can not save sensitive corporate files on your Cloud.
Even for non-sensitive PDFs, I do not always have access to the cloud when I need to view or work with a PDF.
I need a non-cloud version of Acrobat Reader.
When Reader DC installed onto my system it must have blown away Reader XI.
After I uninstalled Reader DC, now I can't open/read PDFs anymore.
Also, I can't find a copy of Adobe Acrobat to install that isn't cloud dependent.
This is a problem for me.
Besides all that, NOW I get error messages every time I try to re-install Reader DC.

So, today at work, I can no longer open PDFs.
