Make a router out of a simple notebook with one NIC (buy a second NIC)

Hello all,
Before starting, I think I must say hello to you because I'm new here : this is my first post . So, in fact, I'm working with Linux since 5 years. I'm running Gentoo on my workstation and my old server, Ubuntu on my notebook and for family, and finaly, I'm running Red Hat at work place for workstation and servers. I'm a Linux and JBoss administrator .
I've decided to run/try Arch because it seams to growth with rock-solid ideas and it's a binary distribution. I now prefer a binary distribution for my server, because it's taking too much time to let old computer or notebook compile the whole world (alone or not ...). I prefer now looking around and learn another Linux distribution. This is why I started to install my first Arch Linux : I will try to run a server on a simple notebook. In fact, it's a working machine, but without any graphics capabilities (memory has burned...), and so, perfect for a little server low consumption. I want it to replace my current server/router running Gentoo on an old Pentium 3.
For now, I've encountered these little problem :
- LID problem when screen is close : reboot never work (power off just after the BIOS, when the LID state is "screen closed"...) => disable LID connection (unplugged from motherboard)
- ssh problem => must now use "/etc/hosts.allow" to let remote machine to be connected
- try routing packet with one NIC => for now, doesn't work ...
- try to get X11 Forwarding => doesn't work too, but it will works quickly
My infrastructure is just a server/router splitting in two part for the LAN at home :
- one part is LAN with all workstations
- the other part is LAN_router which is another network with only the ADSL router to access internet
So, its looking like this : <machine1> => <switch> => <[eth1]server/router[eth0]> => <switch> => <router_ADSL> => INTERNET
All is fine ... with the old machine ... for the new one, it has only one network interface ... The question is : how to do routing with only one NIC ???
In theory, I "should" work ... but .. some component can have some little hard time to do the right things .. and for me, is not working right now.
The first try is to use one interface with one IP aliasing, like this :
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000
link/ether 00:1d:e4:a3:d5:1a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 10.2.1.8/26 brd 10.2.1.63 scope global eth0
inet 10.2.1.66/26 brd 10.2.1.127 scope global eth0:0
inet6 fc80::21a:e2ff:fea3:d56a/64 scope link
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
Two sub network are used :
- 10.2.1.0/26
- 10.2.1.64/26
I must have 2 ip on one NIC, so aliasing can be used (when testing, the new server/router is able to ping a workstation and the ADSL router ; it can also use internet). I've heart there is some problem with "iptables" to set forwarding rules when using IP Aliasing ... but I prefer try myself . It doesn't work for now, probably because of this. But, is there a way to use a "workaround" ? For example, if "iptables" is not able to play with aliasing, and so, interface such as "eth0:0", may be there is a way to tell it, like this :
[root@serveurn ~]# iptables-save
# Generated by iptables-save v1.4.10 on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
*nat
:PREROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
:INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:POSTROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
-A POSTROUTING ! -d 10.2.1.0/26 -o eth0 -j SNAT --to-source 10.2.1.66
COMMIT
# Completed on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
# Generated by iptables-save v1.4.10 on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
*filter
:INPUT DROP [0:0]
:FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [9:932]
-A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -s 10.2.1.0/26 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
-A FORWARD -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
COMMIT
# Completed on Sun Dec 12 17:30:01 2010
... use the interface "eth0" (for the whole throughput) and do SNAT for all excepted for the LAN network ? But it seams to not work ...
I got a second idea : if it wan't work with aliasing ... may be can I use virtual interface and bridge ... create a bridge with "eth0" and "tap0" so I can add more than one ip in the machine .. and may be, will be able to route packet from these two interface ???
But for now, I have to understand why X11 Forwarding don't work ...
EDIT: xorg problem solved : xorg-auth was requested ...

PRICELESS !!
@loopx: Honestly: return the USB NIC you just got, buy a compatible device(maybe an asus rt-n16) and install dd-wrt. You'll be a lot happier....

  • IS THERE A USB WIRELESS ROUTER OUT THERE THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH MAC 0SX 10

I NEED TO HOOK UP MY MAC PRO OSX 10.5.6 WIRELESS TO ANOTHER COMPUTER. IT DOES NOT HAVE A AIRPORT CARD INSTALLED IN IT. I CANNOT AFFORD TO BE WITHOUT MY COMPUTER FOR THE 48 HOURS IT WOULD TAKE TO INSTALL IT. IN THAT CASE, I AM EXPLORING WHAT I CAN DO WIRELESSLY...USB WIRELESS ADAPTORS ARE AVAILABLE AT STAPLES...BUT ARE FRIENDLY TO MACS BEFORE THE VERSION I HAVE....ANY THOUGHTS OR SUGGESTIONS? I WANT A QUICK FIX THAT WILL GET ME CONNECTED TO THE WIRELESS ROUTER IN MY HOME ATTACHED TO THE OTHER COMPUTER.

S0RRY AM NOT DOING IT ON PURPOSE. MY LAPTOP'S CAPS LOCK KEY IS BROKEN/JAMMED. SO THIS IS HOW I HAVE TO BE. I UNDERSTAND. BUT I WAS CERTAINLY NOT TRYING TO BE RUDE. JUST TRYING TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE - SO THAT I CAN THEN GET OFF THIS LAPTOP AND USE MY MAC PRO ALWAYS.

  • I want my Mail to not make a thread out of all related messages into one. I hate it.

With my new Mac came the new Mail. Now I hate it. It puts everything on to a single thread of messages. And if you open the thread and there is more that one unread message, you can probably skip one of the unread.
I exactly what happens in GMail.
Does somebody know how to undo this?
    Thanks.

  • Can you no longer sign out of the App Store with one ID and then sign in with another?

i can no longer sign out of an Apple ID on the App Store and then sign in with another. I did this in order to share games with my sons. Is this no longer possible? When I try it now I get a message saying he will have to wait 90 days before he can use his ID again.

The page that I linked to, associating a device and the 90 days, has been around for a few years (at least 3), but from what some people have posted on here the association doesn't always kick in.
Are the apps that you might want to sync in the computer's iTunes library that you sync his iPad to, or have you got copies of them somewhere so that you can add them to it and then sync them instead of redownloading ? If they were bought on a different computer, and are still on that computer, then you should be able to copy them over to his iPad's computer - by default an iTunes library is stored under :
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
    Windows Vista: \Users\username\Music\iTunes
    Windows 7 and Windows 8: \Users\username\My Music\iTunes
There should be a 'Mobile Applications' or similarly named directory under it - copy the apps to a flash drive, if not already done so then authorise your account on his iTunes (Store > Authorise This Computer menu option) and then add them via File > Add To Library menu option

  • CALL DOES NOT ROUTE OUT THE LOCAL GATEWAY

Local calls will not route out the local Gateway of branch1 to the PSTN or from the PSTN back to branch1, however they will route out either CorpHQ or branch2 backup gateways. When I go into the route group configuration for branch1, and remove the backup gateways, I get a fast busy tone when I dial the local number. I know the MGCP Gateway at branch1 is functioning because when I dial 911 and run debug ISDN Q931, the call routes properly through branch1, so I have a call routing problem. I ran DNA and it came back as ROUTE THIS PATTERN and all of the number translations looked accurate, so I didn't have to check for any block patterns. I'm not getting any errors on the calling party phone display. When I deleted the route pattern for the branch1 site and forced it to use the global route pattern, I received a debug output on branch1. I do not know a debug command (such as debug voip dial-peer or debug ccsip messages) to use for an MGCP Gateway to see if the call is actually reaching the Gateway.
    I have checked the following:
    the route pattern configuration
    the translation pattern configuration
the called party transformation pattern configuration
the route list configuration to make sure the correct route group for branch1 was selected
the route group configuration to make sure that the branch1 Gateway was first in the order of selected devices
the route pattern configuration to make sure the correct route list for branch1 ist selected
the Gateway configuration to make sure it's using the device pool for branch1 and to make sure the called party transformation CSS for the branch1 Gateway is applied
the device pool configuration to make sure it's using the route group branch1
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
    Regards,
    Ron

    Hi Nishant:
Please see the attachments for the Gateway pages
The significant digits for inbound calls for all 3 gateways is '4'
Please see the running-configs of the 3 gateways and the PSTN
Please see the debugs for the INBOUND calls
    Many Thanks,

The following INBOUND call from the PSTN to 2065011001 is now working, however it is supposed to be routing through CorpHQ and is instead routing through Branch1. Please see 'DEBUG VOIP CCAPI INOUT' & 'DEBUG ISDN Q931'

  • What makes Arch stand out?

I have heard people talk about Arch a lot, but have never been able to figure out what makes it different from other distros.  I am interested in trying it out but I would like to learn a bit more about it first.  People talk a lot about how great the Pacman package manager is, but I haven't been able to figure out what is really unique about Pacman based on the things I have read about it?  What are the similarities and differences that make it stand out from other package managers?
I have been using Ubuntu for quite some time but I would like to find something I like a bit better.  I have used Gentoo for a little while and I like it, but compiling everything from source is time consuming.  I would really like something that gives the user a similar level of control but without having to compile everything.  I generally find myself using default options for compiling anyway, so I don't feel like it's really worth it.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that I want to use something that's more for advanced users than Ubuntu is, but doesn't require you to wait for packages to compile every time you want to make a change to the system.  Am I right to think that Arch may be what I'm looking for?  Does anyone have any opinions on what makes Arch really stand out aside from Pacman?

bananaoomarang wrote:PAcman is brilliant because it's light and featurefull and manages my system perfect;y.
No it isn't. Try replacing openjdk with sun's jre. Pacman can't do that when something is installed that depends on java-environment even when both packages provide it.
In fact I consider pacman to be the only thing that really needs improvement:
The "database" is the filesystem which makes the first reading of the database extremely slow until it is in cache.
Pacman really has problems with handling dependencies of dependencies, the user often has to do it himself instead of pacman offering some sane options.
Other than that Pacman is great: It is fast when the database is in ram and it's not bloated like the package manager on other Distributions (rpm on fedora *caugh*).
What makes Arch stand out is the extremely good Rolling Release: I used ubuntu before and you maybe know about the time when there was this discussion about open office 3 and firefox 3 not going into the release version... With time it were simply too much applications that were hold back. You may also remember the brasero 0-byte-free bug, where many people could not burn with brasero for 6 months because Ubuntu refused to put the fixed version in the repos.
Another thing is the init system. I never quite understood all these /etc/rc.* things and how they are configured correctly. There are some hacks like the rcconf program, but nothing compares to the simplicity and sanity of rc.conf + /etc/rc.d/
Anything that comes from the Archlinux project is simple and fun to use. Try building a sane package for debian - that's the opposite of fun.
Try building a package for Archlinux: Write a pkgbuild and it just works.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
Do other devices now have this problem?
Did the iPod stay connected before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. Could be a loose antenna connectin

  • I want to create a playlist on an old iPod Nano (I think it's from the second generation), but the computer it was originally linked to via iTunes died years ago.  How can I make a playlist out of existing songs on the iPod?

    Hello there,
I have an old iPod nano which I think is from the second generation (model number A1199 if that helps) with software at the latest version it can accept, 1.1.3.  I wish to make a playlist out of the songs currently on the iPod, but I can't see any easy way to do that from the iPod itself.  The next logical thought is to do it through iTunes, but the iTunes that was originally synced to the iPod died several years ago now, so I can't access that to make a playlist through (it's a very old iPod).  I do have iTunes currently on this computer, but that's synced with my iPhone and stores different songs which I don't want to be mixed with those from the old iPod (due to the mostly nostalgic nature of the iPod songs).  Is there any way I can either create a new playlist from the iPod itself, or through iTunes without having to sync?  Also note that most of the songs on the old iPod were uploaded to iTunes from CDs and so aren't connected with any iTunes Login.
Thanks for any help you can give.  Also, I sorta need to create this playlist ASAP so any advice you could give would be much appreciated
    ~Imamadmad

The old iTunes library was lost with the old PC.  However, it all that music and content is still on your iPod there are many ways you can extract this content from the iPod and import it back into iTunes.
Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the new PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • I am using photos . I add a camera and make my photos slide in.  How do I add a second behavior to the photo to make it slide out.  I want the photo to hold on the screen for a few seconds in between sliding in and sliding out.

I am using photos in Motion 5.  I add a camera and make my photo slide in.  How do i add a second behavior to the photo to make it slide out?  I want the photo to hold for a few seconds in between sliding in and sliding out.  When I am trying to do this  I am not getting the photo to hold, i am making one continuous motion which I do not want.
    Thanks

Are you using the "motion path" behavior? If so just duplicate it and drag it down the timeline to where you want it to start. Trim it to end at the end of the project. The gap you leave in the timeline between the two behaviors is your hold time. Not sure why you are using a camera unless you have a behavior on the camera. If you are using keyframes just set two keyframes at the same position values in the inspector for the hold time.

  • How to make a stationery out of .doc or .docx file?

    Hi,
I stumbled upon a website that has some nice stationery, in .doc format. and since there few free pre made stationery available for Mail.app, at least to my knowledge, because I think I almost downloaded every free stationery available out there that could be easily found via Google. I decided to download some of these .doc stationeries and try to put them in Mail.app, but first I had to convert them into .html format. so here is what I've already tried and did not work:
first I tried opening them in TextEdit, which supports .doc out of the box, only to find out that the pictures in the documents are gone to thin air. I tried saving it and then opening it with something else like Open Office, but the pictures were permanently gone.
then I tried opening the original documents directly in Open Office, you guessed right If you said they will look screwed, and they were, and tried to save them as html, they were screwed even more.
so I did a bit of research and found out that I could use Google Docs in order to convert the documents, I uploaded them into my Google docs and then tried to open them with it, but found it that Google docs can't handle the pictures (specially background pictures) either. as a result I did more searching to find a document converter and here is what I found:
I found a few online service to convert these documents:
http://www.freefileconvert.com/ was pretty good to convert the files into an .odt format. at first I thought yes I got the solution, now I can simply convert it to html using Open Office, but unfortunately, when I saved the document in html format and checked it in Safari to see how does it look, as If I would have done the same in MS Office with the original format, it looked pretty much screwed .
So I continued to look and I found a few other online services one of them asked me to pay a fee, I skipped to the other one which was http://docx-converter.com/. unfortunately the website wasn't functioning properly I think, at least for me (maybe someone out there has succeeded using it, I don't know.) and it didn't send me anything.
Finally I found http://www.zamzar.com/ that could convert .doc or .docx documents into html, or at least that is what it claims to do so, I tried it, and after I received the file via email, I found out it only contains a bmp image of the document's background. So much for the online conversion services!
But I decided I would give it a last shot using MS Office online, so I opened up my old Windows Live mail and went into my Skydrive, I uploaded the documents and tried saving it as html, but there were no save as html (after all an online copy of MS Office should have some limitations, otherwise few people will be willing to buy a Desktop version) but this didn't made me disappointed, since I already knew, that Neither Office Word can make a clear conversion, so I tried something different, while I was in Safari looking at the document in online MS office, I saved the page as Web Archives, then I opened the file with TextEdit, and after deleting useless links and pictures, I finally managed to get a clear document with everything that supposed to be in it. At this point I only need to know how to make use of this document to create a stationery with this raw file which is in Web Archive format. any ideas?
    null

I'm a total idiot! How did I overlook http://www.zamzar.com/ functions? I think I might have mistakenly chosen convert to BMP instead of html. I tried it and the result was very good.
OK I finally found a good solution for this problem, so everyone out there that has the same problem, here is what I did:
    1. OK if you have some .doc and .docx file formats and you want to convert them into something like .html or .odt, without having to reedit the code or getting a screwed document, use http://www.freefileconvert.com/ in order to convert them into .odt so they would look as they do in MS office just go to the website and upload your documents then choose .odt, then click convert, after a few moments you will get a link to download your .odt files. you can use and play around with your document in Open Office, I have tested it and it's really good.
    2. Or if you want to convert them into .html with a clean code, and all the elements in it, simply go to http://www.zamzar.com/ and then ulpoad your documents, choose .html and enter your email address, you will have your .html files zipped and sent right in your inbox, then you could use Kompozer like me, or any other html editor, to make a template out of it. I tried it and the result was nice, now I have a bunch of nice html files that I can use to make templates and email stationery.

  • How to get the workcentres used in the routing out of 2 alternate routings

    Dear All,
I would like to know how to get the workcentres used in the routing out of 2 alternate routings.
I referred PLKO got the Task List Type (PLNTY), Group(PLNNR), Group Counter(PLNAL), Plant(werks).
I passed this in to PLPO, The problem in PLPO is we don’t have the distinguishing field Group Counter(PLNAL), so I am getting all the ARBID including both alternates.
How to get the ARBID with respect to Groupcounter 1 alone.
If a get the ARBID , I can get the ARBPL from CRHD.

    HI,
Use PLAS Table also.  you have to use PLKO> PLAS> PLPO.
Pass PLNNR & PLNAL in PLAS and get PLNNR & PLNKN.
    Then pass these into PLPO.
    work centers from CRHD

    hi there!
im really stuck on this and cant work it out i hope you guys can help! i have been trying to make a single shot or scene whatever you want to call it with multiple videos playing all at the same time in it but i want them all to have their own custom shape. i know that i can just put them together into one frame and play them at once but they are all the original rectangle shape they where filmed in and i could put a mask over each one to make it a circle but i want to make each one a custom shape for example if you where to make a face out of 4 videos and one was the shape of the main part of the face one was the eyes one for the hair and one for the mouth now i would have to make the shape of each video the right shape for the corresponding body part then place them on top of each other and then i would have a face made from looping videos. i cannot work out how to make the frames of each video a custom shape after searching tutorials please can someone help me with this it would be greatly appreciated as it is a collage project. thanks very much for your time in the matter Josh.

ok thanks yea thats helped alot im new to this so thats why it seems basic to you but not me. i have tryed to find out through tutorials but could work it out. im now able to do this but i want to draw my mask free hand and it seems you can only place points with the pen tool? is this the only way to make the shape of my mask? or example in photoshop which i know well i can use a paint brush and paint any shape i want to make a mask but i cant see how to do that in after effects? any help on this would be greatly appreceated. thanks josh

GB for iPad doesn't have volume automation, you'd need to import the project into GB on a Mac to create the fade with a volume curve.
as an alt, finish your song and export the audio file, then import the audio file in an audio editor and create a volume fade with that:
