Make a transparent logo

I have an animated logo that I want to use for text and transitions. I need help making it transparent. The logo has a black background. But I want to layer it over video but cannot figure out how to make it transparent. Any help??

Where was this logo created? If it's in a different program you need to export it from there as an Animation file with transparency conserved by setting your colors to Millions of Colors+, as Ian already said.
If you have this file within FCE and have no way of accessing the original project in which it was created, try setting the composite mode to Screen or Add via +Modify > Composite Mode.+

I have a logo (attached) which currently has a white background and I need to make it transparent for use on my web page. I have a manual but am finding it confusing. Would really appreciate an answer in simple terms as I am new to this.

First rename the Background layer to anything else; it is sufficient to double click the layer in the Layers Palette and acccept the default name "Layer 0". Then remove the background using various PSE tools. The background will be replaced by a checkerboard pattern indicating transparency.
Since your background is a solid color, you can use the Magic Wand to select it. In my example below I used the Magic Wand default options: Tolerance 32, Anti-aliased and Contiguous boxes checked. Holding down <Shift>, click in the white areas until all of it is selected (it took me 2 clicks), then <Delete>. This however may not select all of it. For purposes of example I added a red layer at the bottom. You can see that a few timy areas were not selected so you can manually remove these with the Eraser tool; zoom way in, choose a small hard Eraser brush size, and paint or click on the pixels.
In this logo it also works if you uncheck the Contiguous box and then one click in the white selects it all (except again for the few stray pixels). However, be careful doing this since the click might select areas within the logo. Here I unchecked the Contiguous box, set Tolerance to 60, and clicked on the white background; some white on the SHRUBBERIES letter were selected:
Anyway, once you have deleted the background save the file in a format that supports transparency. PSD, TIFF, PNG, PNG, GIF, EPS support transparency. JPG, BMP do not. For Web applications, you probably want GIF.
Note: the reason for renaming the Background layer is that areas deleted on this layer are replaced not by transparency but by the current color as defined in the background color swatch at the bottom of the toolbar.

But as I have upgraded to Photoshop CC I am having a few issues.
I have done everything in the tutorial, but when I come to use my custom shape if I just click on my image a pop up box appears that says 'Create custom shape' with boxes to fill in the pixel sizes, and two check boxes 'from centre or preserve proportions'.
If I click and drag this box doesn't come up, instead the custom shape is put down ok but the little path squares are on. If I click on a different layer they go away, but when I click on the shape layer they come back again! How do I make it so that my custom shape appears like a normal image?
I've got shape selected in the drop down box.
I have just discovered the properties box, if I click on the shape path it changes to the normal shape, is there a way to make that the default?
I also want to apply the layer style and have tried saving a new tool preset. But the layer style won't save on it. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Any tips greatly appreciated.

When you click on the document without dragging, the pop up appears as it want to know what size the shape should be at that location. Thats why it does not appear when you drag, as that drag tells photoshop what size the shape should be.
What I think maybe happening, is you have the custom shape tool set to path instead of shape. In the top tool bar on the left side of the screen you will see (second icon in) a drop box or 3 icons (depending on your version) If a drop box click it and select shape, if 3 icons click the left icon not the middle or right.
The shape option is also the default, so if you can not figure it out you can click right click on the very first icon in the top tool bar and select reset tool or reset all tools.
Layer style do not save in the tool presets, those presets are for the tools not the object. What you need to do is open the styles panel (window>style) Then save your preset there. Either click on the new icon at the bottom of the styles panel or click inside the panel.

Since you had written event handlers on 'board' and board is transparent (without drawBoard function), there will be no events triggered and navigation is not possible. Workaround is to create board with fill = minimum alpha value (0.01).
board.graphics.beginFill(0x0, 0.01);

Or, if you don't like fiddling with Xdefaults file, you can simply make urxvt transparent by executing it like "urxvt -tr -sh 20", where the number represents the transparency level. However, this is only pseudo transparency, but I like it better than resource-consuming compositing.
Will give it a try. I'm not against .Xdefaults - just haven't used it that much and know only the basics ( color schemes )

Importing transparent logo from photoshop into Motion 1.01..

I am trying to import a transparent logo into motion that I did in photoshop..
No matter how I save it in photoshop, when I import in motion it always comes up with white background and never just the logo.. I have tried clicking on the Alpha type in the inspector and then dragging it on to the stage but no luck!!
Not sure if there is even a way to do it? I have the logo and have it as a png, psd and .targa but cant get it so its just the logo..?
What am I doing wrong?

I made it work by save the screenshots in JPEG file, then insert into the post.
If you just paste into the post directly from the clipboard, it appears okay, only when you submit the post, it disappears.

Unable to make a transparent connection from non root user

I am trying to make a transparent connection from a non-root user and I am having permission denied when trying to generate ssh keys, as per below:
$ ssh-keygen -t rsa

Enter same passphrase again:

Its working fine as root user, but not for any other user.

Make a transparent gif

This may not be the right forum to ask this, but I do not see an obvious place.
I just want to take a gif file, select a color to make transparent and save it. This does not need a heavy graphics app. You would think that would be a save option in preview where you can simply convert image files.
I have photoshop, and sure you can make a transparent gif with that, but it is way too complex and not as simple as just select a pixel.
Am I missing something? Surely this simple function must be simple on a Mac. In the other world I use a simple free download MS gif editor. Pick a pixel and save. I am trying to find that on a Mac.
