Make an iWeb template wider

hi there
i use the iWeb template "vergilbtes papier" (should be something like "yellowish paper, but not sure" for my site www.thesourcethailand.com. i would like to make it wider, as this works with many templates, but obviously not with this one. if i try it it results in 2 segments. is there a trick?

anyway i am happy you have become a web designer (sooner or later i might end up there too, as i don't want to ask other people toooo much), since you obviously have the creative ingenuity. so i will gladly follow your recommendation. in fact i tried a bit already and did exactly what you said and it looks like this will solve the problem once i will do it properly (almost have it). the question: do i need to make 2 separate pictures? one for the page background and one for the browser background (as they are not the same)?

How do you make an iWeb page wider?

Just getting started with iWeb and I enjoy it. I have to plead ignorance when it comes to web design. It seems that most websites are wider than the ones I create in iWeb. Can you make them wider? And the big question, how large should they be vertically also? What is the standard? Any help would be appreciated for this beginner.

Whoops! I pressed the wrong button. I make my pages as deep as they need to be. Theoretically they can go on forever but readers tire of scrolling down too far. If it's just text and few images I sort of judge how a magazine page looks and make it look like a magazine page. On my art club's website we have a Members' Gallery section and I have to include up to 20 submissions. I just keep going until all the thumbnails are in with the text, and then hyperlink them larger version on a blank page not in the navigation menu.

It depends on which template you use.
You can also hide the default navigation and build your own which allows more freedom of design and is better for search engine optimization...

Can iWeb templates be modified?

I last used iWeb to set up a travelogue in 2006. I have 3.0.4 ('09, I think).
I may be remembering why I didn't use a template before--because I wanted something I couldn't get with the templates.
Am I correct that I can't change a background or text color, or choose to center text which is flush left on an iWeb template?

Jeff, you're a prince. I've printed out your last posts & dragged & dropped the 2 samples to my desktop, from which I can then use them I was able to do the web browser background instructions. It worked! Cool.
I'm sure this will turn out to be embarrassingly self-evident, but how did you 'copy the page background image and paste it into preview'? It has no 'handles' allowing it to be selected. Nor could I locate 'Preview'.
Now trying the paper maneuver you explained, I'm a bit stuck. What do I select for 'Page Background? I now have removed the Formal Theme text boxes, have changed footer pixels to '0', and have a horizontal rectangle of the ivory paper there. How do I make it disappear so I can then replace it with the size-able box as you describe?
By the way, I noticed right off in your video was how you changed the width of the page immediately. How did you choose 900--and I forget the vertical pixels you chose but will check again. I hate how small the page content size is. Is there a 'standard' size these days for website width & height?

I was looking for FREE iWeb templates but I haven't been able to any find free ones or great ones.
Do you know where to get them?
I was also looking for other free goodies that are on iweb, such as little doodles and pieces of paper. You know what I mean?

Were are iweb templates stored? And how editable are they?

The iWeb templates are stored in XML files which can be edited, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart. Thankfully, starting with iWeb 1.1, Apple at the very least started including "blank" templates, which probably satisfied a lot of people wishing for the ultimate in flexibility. Suzanne Boben's work is very good, though...you should take a look.
One poor man's way of making a template page is to start with a blank template, customize it to your specifications, and then save it as a custom template in your site organizer window. By that, I mean keep it as a "page" in your site organizer, but don't display it in your navigation menu by unchecking the box "Include in navigation menu" in the Inspector Page tab. Keep this "template" clean. Whenever you want to make a real page out of this template, just select it and Control-click, then select "Duplicate" from the menu. THen you can add unique information to this copy and still keep the "template" clean and safe. See how this is the poor man's custom template?

Installing Iweb templates

I have Iweb on an Apple Ibook G4 1.33Ghz 512MB RAM laptop. It came with ILife installed and I'm guessing it's version 6. Can anyone please guide me as to how to install the Iweb templates please?

You guessed wrong. The latest version is 3.0.4
You can see it in the iWeb menu > About iWeb. Or select iWeb and do Command-I (Info).
The iWeb themes are stored inside iWeb. To go there, copy the line below :
/Applications/iWeb.app/Contents/Resources/Themes/
In the Finder, do Command-Shift-G and paste the line. Hit Return.
Right-click any theme and choose Show Package content. Open the Shared folder.

Is there any way to browse through the iWeb templates that come with the app, at a bigger size so I can actually tell what they are like? At present I am having to make a new site, select a template and a page type from that template, all in order to view the template larger.

Bending iWeb templates

Is there an easy way to modify the templates in iweb? I have seen some .mac users who have very innovative navigation bars at the top of the page. I would like to take my little site to this level. I love the iWeb program, but am finding it somewhat restrictive now that I'm familiar with it.

There is not an easy way to modify the default templates in iWeb. However, starting with iWeb 1.1, Apple has included for us blank template pages, which I guess you can customize to your heart's content. Since iWeb 1.1 it is also possible to make a custom template and then right click it in the Site Organizer and select "duplicate" to make a copy of it. This way, you can always keep a "blank" custom template ready for those new pages.
If you really want to modify the existing templates, then you will have to get down and dirty with the CSS and xml stuff. There are several users on this forum who have done just that...sboben comes to mind. Might want to search for her posts to learn about that.

Make a simple template

Hello,
I bought the Core Java Server Faces book and I would like to have an environment similar to the examples given in the book.
What I want to do is I want to make very simple templates with only the basic JAR libraries that I don't need yet.
The problem I'm having is setting up Studio Creator for a very basic environment. Is there a way to strip the IDE of the JDBC, UI components so I can work with the core JSF/HTML tags?
In particular, I want to remove the
<ui:link binding="#{Page1.link1}" id="link1" url="/resources/stylesheet.css"/>
and the other <ui:/> components from automatically appearing when I try to view the "Design" page.
Is this possible? or sticking to a text editor like vim and gedit the only way to do this?

Is it possible to make an iWeb site accessible to mobile phones? (I'm in Japan)
I've tried making a tiny site but my own phone (au A5516T by Toshiba) can't display it.
The URL is accepted but displays just a white blank screen.
I can't see anything about it in this iWeb forum or iWeb Help. Which I guess means that either it's impossible or that it's so elementary I shouldn't have to ask!
Is there some special code involved?

You can't. You can copy and paste a transition, though, if you target the destination track. You can also change your default transition (right-click the transition you want in the Effects panel) and the default transition duration (Edit > Preferences > General) and apply that one by one or to a group of clips by selecting them and going to Sequence > Apply Default Transitions to Selection.

The cool little features in iWeb templates

Hi all,
I was just wondering how to get the cool little add-ons that the iWeb templates have on my site?
For example, iWeb has scissors on one of the sites. Their are also others like.. doodles, post its, "hello, my name is" I know I can simply cut and paste, but I'm looking for additional add ons. is there a stock pile of these somewhere on the web or maybe on my mac?

You can add scrolling banner text, blinking text, mouse rollover, Fancy Zoom, Show and Hide text and many other enhancements.

How to make a custom template the default for Apple Mail (10.7.5)?

Hi,
I'm OK with making a new custom template in Apple Mail. It shows up fine once under "custom" in the stationary pane (and once I take off signature in a new email). But... that's a lot of trouble to go through everytime I want to send an email.
So the question is: can I make my custom template my default for all my emails, unless I want to manually change it? Seems like this should be possible but I can't figure it out and haven't run into any solutions (only on how to make a template).
Do I really have to select it each time?

As an FYI: I just solved the problem by going the "low road." I'll be a bit laborious in case someone else wants a solution at a later date (I know I Googled the topic and found nothing). I experimented by simply:
Opening a new email message
Selecting my custom template
Copying the custom signature (Select All)
Opening another new email message
Selecting Edit on the Signature pulldown menu
Hitting the plus symbol to create/add a new signature in the pane
Pasting into the new signature
Naming it
Selecting "Choose signature" at the bottom of the signatures pane
And violà!!
It now appears as a possible selection *and* as the default.
Better yet - it is now my default and will work as a reply to an email.
I think I got it all right in the list above.
OK, granted, this is a pretty simply signature - a list of my website, SoundCloud, twitter etc with those names in bold and a graphic of my color logo - but... it works! YMMV.
Give it to Apple to make it so simple that any fool could do it (that would be me), you wouldn't need a "specialized" app, and - of course - there wouldn't even be instructions on how to do it!

Open Mail, Help
So, create your template from scratch or edit an existing Mail template and re-save it with a new name.
Your own saved or edited/re-saved templates are stored in the Custom list at the bottom of the Stationery types.
The default templates remain with original names in the original folders.
Then to use your template in a New Message, select it from Show Stationery, Custom.
To make it easier to select Stationery templates, first open Mail, New Message, View, Customize Toolbar, and then drag the Show Stationery button to the New Message toolbar. (It will not ever appear in the default Mail toolbar, only the New Message toolbar, and can only be added to the New Message toolbar.)
