Make an object look transparent in photoshop, low opacity

Hi. Using PS CS4 on Windows XP.
Below I have an image on the left with apples showing 4 that are transparent (opacity set to 50%). I am wondering if there is a way to make the apple look transparent, but not transparent to the others so that the apples look more like they do on the right (not going through each other). I understand these  are completely solid, but I was wondering if there is a way to make an object look like it's transparent, but not be able to go through another object. This was really hard for me to explain so please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Of course I figure it out after I write this post even though I have been trying to figure it out for a couple days.
What I did was put a Levels adjustment layer (dragged the middle slider) on those apples that were fading away after putting the opacity back to 100%.
The below picture is what I was trying to achieve:
If anyone else has another solution, I'd be glad to hear it.
Thank you!

  • How to make 3D object look like it's spinning?

    I am creating a logo and the client wants the cylindrical shape with tire treads on it look like it's spinning. I've created a 3D cylinder and mapped the tire tread artwork onto it, but can't seem to figure out a way to make it 'look' like it's spinning. I've tried a little bit of a shadow to the treads (slightly darker color) and also tried to copy/paste some additional treads just slightly off on the x value (making the additional treads darker as they 'step down'). Not sure if < that description makes sense, but I'm just not quite sure how to accomplish this. Any ideas? I'm currently working in Illustrator CS6.

    Since you're talking "3D", I assume you're not trying to make a black and white logo.
    I would suggest creating a blend between 2 instances of your tread symbol. Set one of the symbols to "0%" opaque (transparent). The resulting blend will give a blur effect (you can play with the number of steps in the blend).
    Now make this blend into a symbol and map it to your 3D cylinder.
    There are many other ways to approach a "motion" effect. Among them are:
    1. Creating a gradient from solid to transparent and filling some "swooshes" over the tire tread.
    2. Using a raster blur effect. AI does not have a motion blur, per se, but you can mimic it using the radial blur and offsetting the blur center to a corner.
    Someone else may have a better idea.
    Hope these help.
    Ok, I played around a bit. Here is one way to make a motion blur in AI (since there is not "motion blur" filter).
    Please note the single anchor point near the top. This is required, to force the Radial blur filter to work more like a motion blur.
    Here's another approach:
    The blur effect is created by building an art brush created by blending 2 rectangles together. The bottom rectangles is set to transparent, giving the brush more versatility.
    This is another Illustrator "work-around" because gradients cannot be used in a brush. I suggest keeping your original brush artwork in a "Symbol" so you can edit the brush using the original blends. If you simply drag the brush onto the artboard, you'll find the blend has been expanded into multiple rectangles.

  • How do I make an object look like it's rotating in 3D with multiple images?

    I have multiple angle images of an object and I want the result to be the same as the link here. http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/#gallery04. I don't know flash at all but it seems like there would be a simple program (even if I have to pay) that allows me to import the images, set the rotation speed and other settings and then hit export to .flv file or something. Does anyone know of a program to do this, or a simple method?
    Thanks,
    Caleb

    Thanks for the info. I know how to make a movie clip of the frames but I don't know JavaScript or much web programming. I don't necessarily need it to be web based..I just need a .flv file that let's me scrub my mouse to the left and right to rotate it. There is a program called photosimile that does this very well which I have used but you have to purchase their 3000 dollar machine and have it plugged in to use the software! I just want a standalone software for this.

  • How to make an embroidered looking logo in Photoshop?

    Hello,
    I need to know how I can turn in a logo into a realistic looking embroidery logo.
    I have got an example of the result I am looking for:
    Thanks a lot!

    I would advise against using photoshop (or other raster image software) for a logo, you also don't want too much detail like an embroidery texture in a logo.
    I assume the threadstarter has a vectorized version of the logo and wants to apply it on some kind of clothing/merchandise for preview.
    PS is not tol of the trade for editing vector, which a logo should be. You're ofc right on that.
    I did something very similar a few days ago to preview our agencys running jerseys we want to have printed. Works fine.

  • How do I make an object look like it is inside of a ring??

    I want to have an oval shaped picture hugged by a ring so that the ring goes around the back of the picture and over the front of it.

    To do this entirely in ID you'd need to draw the ring as a shape or path with the part behind the image missing and palce it in front of the image. Illustrator's patfinder tools are a little more sophiticated and might make it easier to isolate the part that goes behind, but you'd still need to to essentially the same thing.

  • A way of making window look transparent

    I'm using the following method to make a window look transparent: whenever a frame is moved, it makes a screenshot of the underliying area and displays it as its background
    but, unfortunately, this doen't work in this example ????
    public class MyFrame extends JFrame implements ComponentListener{
    private Image image;
    public MyFrame(){
    super();
    this.addComponentListener(this);
    public void componentHidden(ComponentEvent e){}
    public void componentShown(ComponentEvent e){}
    public void componentResized(ComponentEvent e){}
    public void componentMoved(ComponentEvent e){
    try{
    image = (new Robot()).createScreenCapture(new Rectangle(getX(), getY(), 200, 200));
    repaint();
    }catch(Exception ex){ ex.printStackTrace(); };
    public void paint(Graphics g){
    if(image != null){
    g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, this);

    May it will not help too much, but I know that a transparent window, isn't transparent, in truth.
    What this windows really is doing is a screenshot of desktop background, and printing it at window background. So, I think prefectly normal that problems as your happen somtimes.
    best wishes

    Try this:
    - go to the 'Opacity' slider on the Layer panel and slide it to the left until the picture has the transparency level you wish to see.
    - SAVE AS your picture (change the 'Type' to a Portable Network Graphic .PNG).
       .PNG file types preserve the transparency level of your photos.

  • ___How do I make this sign look real(er)??

    I'm trying to make this sign* look like an actual real sign (like a sign that would have neon type lettering, but turned off during the day), that would hang above a restaurant/bar in a cosmopolitan city.
    the client thinks it isn't 'real' lloking enough - any tips/suggestions/tutorials y'all can suggest?
    9Not so much for the neon aspect - I think I have that covered) - All comments welcome!
    *name in neon has been covered by green for this screenshot's purposes.

    Hard to judge with so little of the background image visible.
    Some options might be:
    • applying a low Gaussian Blur as a Smart Filter
    • adding a neutral noise Pattern Overlay (Blend Mode Linear Light) to match the grain/noise of the background image
    • adding gray streaks in the proper places to simulate the effect of dust and rainwater
    • adding rust to the metallic bars
    • re-evaluating the shadow the object drops on the background (especially the shadow on the glass window seems peculiar as it seems too strong and does not offset in relation to the brick wall)
    • adding a deeper shadow close to the object and blurring the shadow with increasing distance from the object

  • Best Illustrator method to make a logo background "transparent..."

    I have seen that there are several posts regarding "transparent backgrounds," but but they're difficult to follow. I apologize if this is old territory. If there is a solution somewhere already, I'd appreciate your pointing me towards it.
    I'm using AI within CS5.5 but new to it. I am importing/converting a JPG file to vector format. The image is a logo with a large black circle boundry and a white opaque background. The background elements inside the boundry circle are also opaque white, and I wish to leave that as is. The edges of the circle touch the  boundries of the JPG file tangentially by about 100px or so on each side when the JPG is viewed at original size.
    My objective is to make everything outside the boundry circle a "transparent" background. What would be the best/easiest way to do this within AI? Is there, for example, a tool that will draw a circle that I can expand to get on the edge of the black boundry circle, and then make everything outside it transparent?
    Thanks very much.

    Arnold

    Arnold,

    The cleanest/best way to vectorize  the black circle, and most likely the other shapes, is to recreate, using the appropriate tools, thereby replacing the original raster parts.
    You may use the raster image as a locked template, maybe on its own lower layer.
    In that case there will be no outlying parts to get rid of.
    But f you just wish to get rid of the outlying part, you may create a circle (with the Ellipse Tool) following the outer rim of the black circle, select that and the image, and Object>Clipping mask>Make.
    OK, a quick progress report...
    I am now back at my main desk and in front of my instance of AI. I am attempting to implement the above suggestion of using the clipping mask. First, a bit more background.
    The object I'm trying to edit is a JPEG file with a logo design... a  black circle with a flat b/w design inside on an opaque white background. There is only one (1) layer, and AI reports the background as being "locked." When I open the JPEG file in AI, it appears as 100%, RGB raster (file is 2341x2344px original size). When I hover over the design with the "select" tool, I see a blue square outline (I assume this is the JPEG file boundry). The edges of the circle circumfrence touch each edge the blue square outline.
    I see how to invoke the elipse tool,  and how to make a clipping mask (I have to remember to select more than one object, or I'll get an error).  But what do I do from there? How do I save just the part that remains (after clipping) on a transparent background? Everything I've tried so far seems to save it on the white opaque background.
    I'm stuck at this point. All help appreciated.

    Arnold.

  • Edited vector Smart Objects update pixilated in Photoshop

    Hello everyone, hope you can help.
    I import CS3 Illustrator vector EPSs as smart objects into PSDs which works fine... until I need to edit the smart object. I follow the prompts on screen and double click on the smart object which opens an Illustrator file - edit - and save per prompts. When I return to PSD, smart object looks blurry and pixilated. Only solution I can find is to make the changes again to original Illustrator file and re-import as smart object. I know this isn't the way it's meant to work - probably doing something really silly. Have searched forums and can't find any similar problem which seems to confirm that it's me not the programme.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks for getting back. I should have probably mentioned I'm working in CS3.
    Re Colour Mode: Both Illustrator EPS and PSD are CMYK.
    Re Colour Profile: Not very technically savy about these things. I know that under 'colour settings' the default is for Creative Suite applications to be synchronised for colour management. I double checked and Illustrator and Photoshop are still in sync, and I'm not getting any warning messages when I open the PSD about colour profiles being mismatched or missing etc. After that I'm not really sure what to check next?
    Re »Replace Contents«  Smart Object:  Replacing the contents sorts out the 'blurry' pixilated' issue but leaves me with another problem... because it replaces from the original file -  but edits, when done from PS, seem to made to another (imbedded?) file, leaving the original intact. So instead of double clicking on the SO icon in Photoshop to edit a Smart Object, I'll have to open the original vector EPS in Illustrator - edit - save - then replace contents in Photoshop.
    Thanks for your help Christoph. I think this one will have to resigned to the 'buggy glitch' file.

  • How do you make a realistic looking background blur to show behind a dialog?

    I'm prototyping a Flex app in Fireworks CS4 & have some pop-up dialogs to display.  When they show up the background should be blured.  I know how to get them to show up, but I can't get a nice blur effect that looks like the one you see in Flash.  I've tried a transparent layer with different blur filters, but none look that realistic.  Any suggesions?

    Simply go to the Filters section in the Property Inspector panel, select first your object on the canvas (for example, the background), then click the [+] sign in Filters > a small popup menu will open, select Blur > Gaussian blur, and edit the value (0 = zero blur, 4 or more = a lot of blur). Later you can edit or remove the effect, which is good.
    I often use Gaussian Blur, especilly if I need to make a bitmap look blurred...
    Hopefully this will help you!

  • I have a line drawing (black on white paper) i have scanned and need to make the white paper transparent, maintaining the line drawing, can i and then HOW can i do this in PS?

    i have a line drawing (black on white paper) i have scanned and need to make the white paper transparent, maintaining the line drawing, can i and then HOW can i do this in PS? this is for my business logo. ive used it for years but with a solid background. id like to have it just be the drawing over my photos with a transparent background.

    First let me apologize for posting a reply that was only suitable for advanced users.  Photoshop is broad and powerful therefore has a huge learning curve.  In fact I would state no one knows and uses all of Photoshop.  When we first get Photoshop it intimidate us and we're very uncomfortable using it.  Many thing are not intuitive there in much learning involved.  After some time we begin to know something and we are able to do some thing.  Learning become rapid and we start playing in Photoshop.  It is very important to play with Photoshop.  Playing with Photoshop and asking for help with in forums like this IMO is the best way to learn.
    Photoshop Power lies in layers, selection and automation.  However it takes knowledge to use photoshop well so most powerful tool you have ins Photoshop is the gray matter between your ears.  Most at one time or another want to watermark or put a logo on their image.  So its best to automate this process. All run into a problem in the process. "Size"  We find our assets vary in size and aspect ratios. Landscape, Portraits, Panoramas and others. This complicates automation.  Vector graphics works best when size vary greatly.  If you can not work out how to create a vector solution like a custom shape.  Create your Logo and watermark large thing scale down better the up. Text scale well for text uses vectors graphics however if you rasterize text it will not scale well.
    I do not type or do English well so let me do some screen captures.  I can not stress enough how important Black, White, Grays and Blending is when it come to image processing.  Become friends with Multiply, Screen, Overlay and Luminosity blending.....
    However when there is a white or black background though you can blend them you can not add a style like a drop shadow, emboss or make it invisible setting fill to 0 so only the style is visible.  When there is contrast between the logo and background it is easy to separate the two. To select the background and delet it to have the logo with a transparent background.  Many tools can be used to create the selection hee I use my action kill white.
    Vector Shape would work better for scaling However it would be best to create the logo from scratch in a vector program like illustrator but I never had the resources to justify the Creative suite. I only had Photoshop.  Recently Adobe gave me and other a year subscription to the creative suite for our participation here.  I still have not installed anything but Photoshop,  A while back I found a program that can create vector patf for black and white art work.  It will not be as good as using something like illustrator. However vector paths can be edited in Photoshop and cleaned up some. Here is the PSD it 13MB because od the gradient http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/AmPm24-7.psd

    Hi Guys for making your picture brighter there are several adjustments which you have to make , i'll give you a walkthrough step by step. make sure all adjustments depends on your choice and satisfaction.
    1. : Adjust the Levels slightly - Not much otherwise it will increase high tones in the picture. Shortcur [Ctrl + L], play with last slider in that window.
    2. Adjust the curve to balcnce the tones whose values are now increased. Shortcut (Ctrl + M)
    3. Adjust brightness in image Menu, make sure while adjusting brightness you take care of Contrast and Sharpness just to make picture lively not flat.
    That's the major things you have to take care of, apart from this there are multiple ways which depends on user.
