Make DW default for XML files?

I'm sure there's a way to do this that I'm missing, but I'd like to make DW my default app for XML files. I know how this can be done on Windows (using "open with" and changing default), but I'm using Mac OSX. I tried messing with the file types section of DW's preferences, but it didn't work. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

In the Mac Finder, select an XML file, and click More Info (or press Cmd+I - that's I, not a lowercase L) to bring up an Info panel. Expand the section that says Open With, and then select Dreamweaver from the pop-up menu (click Other, if it's not listed). Then click the Change All button to apply it to all XML files.

• How to make PSE default for .psd files

Hi all
I have both PS CS2 and PSE9 installed on my MAC pro, running the latest version of Snow Leopard. If I click to open an image with a .psd extension, the system automatically launches PS CS2. I would like the system to recognize PSE9 as my default for images. I looked all around system preferences yesterday, but couldn't find anything. I'm sure I'm missing something..... Thanks.

Find a closed psd file. Click it once to highlight it and press command+i for the Get Info window. Under Open with Application choose PSE, then click Change All.

• ? How do you change default for .pdf files from Reader 6 to reader 9

I cannot change the default for .pdf files from reader 6 to reader 9. Also I cannot remove reader 6. I am running Vista

Normally, completely removing old versions and reinstalling the latest version will reassociate all applicable extensions for the program, but it appears to have failed in your case. There may be something else going on with your machine that is producing this behavior. You probably need to investigate that. But what you can do to make sure the defaults are correct is click on the start orb and select 'Default Programs.' Then select 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program.' From the list of file types, select each of the following in turn: acrobatsecuritysettings, fdf, pdf, pdfxml, pdx, xdp, and xfdf. If its default program is not Adobe Reader, click on the Change Program button and select Acrobat Reader from the list (you may need to expand the lower section to display more programs than it initially provides). If Adobe Reader does not show up in the list, you will have to browse for it. It should be located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10\Reader\AcroRd32.exe or C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 10\Reader\AcroRd32.exe.
This method is safer than manually editing the Root\Classes in the registry.

• How do I make preview default for pdf's in safari?

I googled it and it said to go to library in your finder, but there is no "library" in my finder. what do i do?

You can make Preview the default for PDF files you download in Safari. Locate a PDF file on your system, select it, click cmd-i to Get Info, then find the "Open With" tab, change the application to Preview, and click Change All.

Also, are you using Photoshop or InDesign?

• Making Adobe 7.0.5 the default for .pdf files

I was advised that the way to get Adobe 7.0.5 to be the default, instead of 5.0, was to delete the Adobe applications & files in my system, library, and user folders, including the 7.0.5 app. itself. Then, after everything relating to Adobe is gone, I should re-install 7.0.5 and it would become the default.
I also heard that Spotlight won't find every Adobe component or extention, so I'd have to do a detailed search and delete each one that way.
Does this sound right?
Can't I just delete the 5.0 folder in the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder and have everthing associated with 5.0 gone? Isn't that the beauty of having a Mac?
Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg
You were poorly advised. Deleting Adobe apps is a headache and completely irrelevant when it comes to making an app the default for a file type.
Control-click a .pdf file, choose Get Info. In the Info window click the Open With drop down list, choose the app you want, and then click Change All underneath it.
That should do it. You might find that there is more than one type of .pdf file and you might need to perform this action again at some time, but this should do the job.
And yes, you can just delete the Acrobat Reader 5.0 folder.

• Conventions for XML-files

Hi!
I'm working on the text of a Bible translation that will be quite an extensive file when it's finished. The publisher has requested that I make an XML file in addition to the print-ready inDesign files they will use themselves. This is because there will be other publishers and companies that will want to use their translation (or parts of it) and it's inconvenient to send them inDesign files. An XML file with all of the paragraph styles, character styles and footnotes would be more convenient.
Now, I've been trying to find information on how such a XML should look. Are there any code conventions for it? Most of the issues on this forum concerns importing xml files for use in indesign - but what I'm wondering is what I must think of when exporting XML files that other people will use?
Also, is it possible to create inline xml tags based on character styles? (Such as bold, italic, suberscript etc.)
I'm using CS6 and Mac OS X Lion.
EDIT: Another thing just struck me. If anyone thinks that XML is not the best format for this then I'd very much like to hear about any other suggestions.

InDesign has a native "Export XML" option, but that requires that you tag each separate item as an "XML item". Some of this can be automated, using "Map Styles to Tags". I don't have any experience with it, positive or negative, but if you exclusively used paragraph and character styles to layout your text it should be straightforward.
Fastest way to get re-usable text in a not too difficult to parse file format is to export as Tagged Text. It's not really proper XML, but it may be Close Enough; if the above route is too complickated, try this (and send your publisher a test file).

There are no "conventions". XML itself only has some very basic requirements (the way of writing element and attribute tags, correct nesting, some special characters that may not be used in plain text; that sort of things). So you can make up your own set of tags, or, to not confuse your receiving party, use a well-known set of tags such as XHTML (ie.,
is for Paragraph, is for Italic, and so on) or DocBook. There are also Scripture specific schema's of XML; http://ebible.org/usfx/ is one found with a quick Google.

• Make Pages Default For Opening Word Documents

I currently use iWork but also use openOffice, whenever I open up a Word document by double clicking it openOffice opens... How can I make Pages the default application for handling these files?

Walt...THANK YOU...can't tell you how irritating it was for me to, by force of habit, double click on a *.doc file & then have Parallels start to open Windows XP so it could get to MS Word - I just did not want that to happen...what a pain. I tried to find a way to have Pages be the default program for *.doc files but couldn't until I read your entry. As a new Mac convert from years & years of Windows use, let me say it again...Thank You

• Flash Pro CS6 BUG - inconsistent end of line for xml files in library saved in xfl - MESSES UP SVN

When saving in XFL with Flash CS6 on Mac (it also happened in CS5.5), the generated xml files in library often have inconsistend end of line, which blocks SVN commits and I have to manually go in the files and make them consistent.
The XML nodes themselves all have \r\l as end of line, while, within <[CDATA[, they only have \r.
We think this happens only when creating new library items on mac, on windows it doesn't happen.
This slows us down incredibly when working on a team using svn.
SVN doesn't upload files with inconsistend line ending.
Line ending shoul be consistent within the same xml file to make svn operations smooth.
Check an image of the bug:
http://www.pippoflash.com/_test/flash_bug_eof.png
you can see clearly the differences.
thank you
Filippo

Thanks Filippo, I could see that now!
While I was investigating this, I found that this is even happening on a file created and saved on just Windows. I was able to reproduce this using the following steps
- Create a new AS3 file on Windows
- Drag out a component to the stage say a Button component from the User Interface section of the Components panel
- Convert the button component to a Movie Clip Symbol
- Save the file as XFL and examine the Library XML files (the End of Line is just 'LF' in CDATA section whereas it is 'CR LF' everywhere else)
Since you were saying 'Items created in windows have no problem', does that means, SVN can commit those without any issues for you? And do you face problem only when the file is Created and Saved on Mac(where the end of line is just LF every where) but Modified and Re-saved on Windows(where the end of line is inconsistent)?
Thanks!

• Receiver File channel for XML files: with carriage return

Hi all,
we are using a receiver FILE channel to generate an XML file that is sent to an external partner.
The XML file looks good in a parser (IExplorer). But in fact there are not carriage return / line feeds between the XML tags
of the XML payload in the file.
Our partner now requires the XML file in a more vertical structure which means: for every tag a separate line (like it is displayed in a parser)
Does anybody know a more general way to convert to a vertical XML structure (so with carriage return line feed).
There is one entry in the SDN dealing with this topic but suggesting using an UDF. I think this is a very specific way.
I don't think it is a good way to change/enhance the message mapping just because of a general formating change.
Is it better to use an XSLT mapping as a second step in the interface mapping or a JAVA adapter module to convert ?
any experiences? suggestions? examples?
Thank you very much
best regards

examples:
original by XI receiver FILE adapter

<MT_batchStatus><type>BS</type>
<message><messageSender>SENDER</messageSender><messageDate>20090723143720</messageDate> ... and so on
required:

<MT_batchStatus>
<type>BS</type>

<message>
<messageSender>SENDER</messageSender>
<messageDate>20090723143720</messageDate>
... and so on

In such a case, the best is to write an generic XSLT or Java mapping that will attempt to do the pretty printing/formatting of the xml.
The advantage of a generic one is that you can reuse the same class/jar for many other scenarios.
so the flow will be as below in your interface mapping;
1. your specific source to target mapping
2. the generic formatting class
