Make Indesign cross references link to the top/above the destination paragraph?

Cross references in InDesign create interactive hyperlinks that link to a position in the resulting PDF where the targetted  destination paragraph is right at the very top of the page. Often, it's too far up - sometimes the paragraph text is actually off the top of the page, and usually it's partially off the top of the screen.
When someone follows such a link, the most prominent text in the middle of the page has nothing to do with the link they clicked, and the heading corresponding to what they clicked is often partially off the top of the page as if it has been scrolled past. In my experience this looks like a mistake - they often won't see where they are supposed to start reading until, in confusion, they scroll back up the page a little.
Is there any way to control this - to make cross references jump to a point with a decent amount of padding at the top, so that what the user is looking for appears in a prominent position on the screen?

After some experimentation I've found something that could help make a workaround: The 'Baseline Shift' value for the first character of the destination paragraph determines where the incoming cross reference scrolling will land. This might be the break character and might (invisibly) have the baseline shift value of an earlier paragraph.
Give that first paragraph a high positive baseline shift value, and there will be a corresponding amount of padding above the text when the incoming scroll lands.
Give that first paragraph a very negative baseline shift value, and it will be pushed up above the top of the screen a corresponding amount.
In my problem paragraphs that weren't even on the screen when an incoming link landed, their first character (a tab between the 'bullets and numbering' paragraph number and the text) had somehow acquired a negative baseline shift from an earlier unrelated paragraph.

  • Display cross-references' linked documents filename in the xref panel

    Our company creates technical manuals consisting of five chapters, all named the same, except with a different prefix. For example the "ABC Widget" manual has an introduction chapter named "ABC 1 - Introduction", a safety chapter named "ABC 2 - Safety", etc. Many times I re-use documents for creating subsequent manuals using the "Save As" command. So the "ABC 1 - Introduction" chapter would be saved as "EFG 1 - Introduction" for the "EFG Widget" book. For all the internal xrefs it saves a whole lot of time since all of the xrefs are preserved. But for cross-document references it creates a problem. For example, if the "ABC 1 - Introduction" chapter has a xref to "ABC 2 - Safety", when I save the Introduction chapter as "EFG 1 - Introduction" it will still retain the xref to "ABC 2 - Safety".
    Right now, the only way to see if there are xrefs pointing to latent docs, is to check each one manually. If the xref panel displayed a column indicating the filename of the linked documents, I would be able to tell at a glance if that xref was pointing to the wrong document.
    Thank you.

    Hi Van,
    I fear, I expressed myself not very clear. I try again.
    We have DITA structured documents. However, lastest status often was saved in the FM document. The xml documents often are not representing the final status.
    When I open the FM8 document in FM9 everything looks pretty good.
    But: When I want to save the document as xml with FM9, I'm getting errors regarding the cross references.
    The cross references which were created in FM8 - doesn't matter, if a valid xml document or a FM document - always look the same.
    (BTW: I don't think that in structured documents cross references always refer to elemts with a unique ID.)
    example from xml which was created with FM8:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" type = "fm:Chapter">"..."</xref>
    the only difference in the FM document is that the element is called fm-xref there, as it's not an external url.
    in FM9 those cross references are totally different.
    example from xml which was created in FM9:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" class = "- topic/xref">"..."</xref>
    When saving the FM documents with the cross references from the first example as xml in FM9 (we don't have FM8 anymore), I get an error that the attribute type is not defined.
    When having a xml document that was last changed with FM8 and opening/ saving this with FM9, there is no error.
    At the moment I do not know how to solve this issue.
    And also I'm not sure weather the same problem might accour again with change from FM9 to FM10 or else.
    It is a great effort to make new cross references just because we upgraded from FM8 to FM9. (And of course always at most inconvienent time.)
    As we are thinking of upgrading to FM10, it would be good to know before, if there are any similar issues to expect.
    Or if there is an fix for FM9 or FM10 to avoid this at all.
    Regards,
    Anna

  • How do I make a bookmark or page link go to top of the page?

    How do I make a bookmark or page link go to top of the page instead of the text that had served for the bookmark, such as a title?

    change where and how? Used to be able to do that in Acrobat, seems there used to be a list of links and one could change the action, but can't find that any place now.

  • Text Insets and Cross Reference Links

    When I use text insets to produce a host file from my source file, I have cross reference links that update OK. However, once I produce a PDF of the host file (text inset), my links do not work. I do not even get the little hand icon to indicate they are links. I am producing my PDFs using File/Save As PDF and the first checkbox on the Links tab is checked. Is this a problem using text insets?

    Unfortunately, that's the way insets work in FM. Cross-refs within an inset do not automatically become active. If you convert the inset to text, then the links are made. I believe that Rick Quatro wrote a Framescript to handle this in an automated way.
    The manual way to do this, is to make a copy of the book - using Bruce Foster's Archive utility is the way to go: see http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/Archive.htm
    Then use the Edit > Text Inset Properties > Convert... > All insets to embed the insets into the documents (you have to do this on a file by file basis); regenerate/update the book file and only then create your output.

  • Frame Maker 9 Cross References Question

    Howdy,
    I got two documents the original and a translated version of it. The original has a bunch of working cross references and it's all fine and dandy. The translated one on the other has a bunch of broken cross-references, chapter headers, headers in general and what not. Almost all of the "code" broke when the translator did it.
    Either way, that's easy enough to fix it, I can just copy the working code from the original and paste into the translated document and it will generaelly fix the error.
    Now for the question - Since my translated document is a couple of pages longer than the original due to the translation can I still copy of the cross references from the first document over, and it will be all fine and dandy?
    Basically I didn't write either docuements I'm just fixing formatting and other errors, and I'm not entirely 100% how Frame Maker does it cross references are they based on a page number/paragraph parameters, or something like under X subheading go here and that's how it links.
    TL;DR How do Cross refernces work in FM9? And if I have a translated doc longer than my original, can those same Cross references work in both docs?
    Thanks much for any help/insight.
    Dean,

    Almost all of the "code" broke when the translator did it.
    They probably deleted the Cross-Ref Markers when over-typing the text. If Text Symbols were off during edit, that's pretty easy to do.
    ... and I'm not entirely 100% how Frame Maker does it cross references are  they based on a page number/paragraph parameters, or something like  under X subheading go here and that's how it links.
    Unless you are Xref'ing a hand-created Marker, Frame auto-creates a Marker, of type "Cross-Ref" at the start of the target paragraph. It also auto creates an Mtext tag, which contains what appears to be a unique number string, the Paragraph Format name and the paragraph text (including any auto number). There is also a <Unique> tag with another unique number string.
    When resolving references, my impression is that Frame first searches for the <Unique> number, and if not found, then for the Mtext string, and then possibly for the Mtext string without the leading number string.
    If the translators do two things, I would expect the Xrefs to port:
    Don't disturb Xref Markers. This can be tough, because it's sometimes hard to select text and not nab leading Markers, and because all Marker symbols look alike, and the Index markers do need to be messed with.
    Don't translate text defined by Markers. That text will auto-translate from the source text at Update.

  • InDesign Cross References with DTP's Cross References PRO

    There are already posts all over the forum about how inter-document cross references in InDesign are "fragile" and slow and can cause crashing, which I recently learned the hard way. We tried to live with the slowness and the breaking links, but the show-stopper was that we couldn't export our largest book without InDesign crashing. (The book contains 150+ individual documents.)
    Based on some recommendations, we are now using a trial of DTP's Cross References PRO plug-in for InDesign. I removed all cross references that were created using InDesign's native cross references, and added several new ones using the plug-in. The slowness has gone away and the cross references don't seem to be breaking anymore, but InDesign still crashes when I try to export our book. DTP's support people insist that their plug-in should be able to handle large books, unlike InDesign. (And I've heard very good things about their support.) Is it possible that our files and/or book are corrupted from when we had the native InDesign cross references? Has anyone switched from native InDesign cross references to DTP cross references?

    I don't think it's been determined if you have the latest ID update for your version of ID? BTW, which version are you using?
    Where is the "too many files open" message coming from? Operating System (which?) ID? What's the exact message? A screen shot would help. Back in the days of DOS and early Windows, there were commands to set the number of permitted files open at once. Not sure how to do it in modern OSs. If it's an ID message, perhaps someone's got a suggestion.
    Some folks on the forum like to see crash files so they can try to analyze them. Search Google for terms like "adobe forum indesign pastebin" without quotes to find some of those postings and learn how to send your crash report files there, and look at the names of those who volunteer to analyze the files.
    I was thinking that two book container files that hold the same total number of files in the original single book might lighten the processing load and perhaps avoid a crash. With some work, I think it's possible to get the pagination and other numbering schemes, and x-refs to emulate a single book. I think that this is different from exporting half the files from one book, then the other half. It's not tested, just a thought. One other thought is to remove one file at a time from the book, starting at either the beginning or end, and export, until you find the maximum number of files that succeed consistently. Then try from the other end, to see if the crash happens with the same number of files, or perhaps same number of pages, or even, perhaps, at the same page. Perhaps the number of cross-references in the content is related to the crash. Again, just brainstorming.
    You might explore with DTPTools support whether they'd want to see your crash files, to determine if the problem traces to their plug-in. Also, perhaps they'd like to look at your whole project - if it's permissable with your company or client, to see if DTPTools' techs can reproduce the crash.

    We've actually never had the InDesign files open while exporting the book and never had a problem. Just to be sure, I tried this. We actually have too many files to open at one time, but I opened as many as I could. Still crashed.
    Can you help me understand your thought behind the second option? What am I troubleshooting by having cross references that point to a document in another book?

  • When I click on a link it moves to the top of the page

    I am new to this forum and fairly new to dreamweaver so I hope this isn't a silly question. I am designing a large number of web pages which will only be viewed on the C:\ drive and not posted on a server.
    I have inserted hyperlinks on the index page linking to other pages in the same folder. I am using a css sheet to define each of the links.
    Now to the problem. When I preview the index page in internet explorer and I click on a link the link works but the actual link itself moves to the top left corner of the index page.
    An example of the html code is:
    <a href="channel.html" title="Channel" id="Channel"
         Channel
         </a>
    The relevant css code is:
    #Channel:link {
         position: absolute
         left:372px;
         top::235px;
         width:100px;
         margin-bottom:0px;
         color:#FFFFFF
         font-weight:normal;
         font-size:12px;
         font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    #Channel:hover {
         color:0000ee;
         font-weight:normal
         text-decoration:none;
    #Channel:visited {
         color:#551a8b;
         font-weight:normal;
    #Channel:active {
         color:0000ee;
         font-weight:normal;
         text-decoration:none;
    If anyone could explain what I am doing wrong I would be most grateful.

    Your whole presentational approach on that page is flawed.

    You have the body tag, followed by oodles of absolutely positioned elements, followed by naked links with a spurious </p> tag at the end.  Not only are you not allowed to have naked links on the page (they must be contained in something like a <p>, or a <td>, or a <li>, etc.) but since the content above the links is entirely composed of absolutely positioned elements (which are removed from the normal flow), the links are exactly where they should be - at the top of the page.  There is nothing in your layout that would place them anywhere else.

    I am sorry for not being able to provide project online oracle to ask the question as some of the data needs to be approved to release.You don't need to use the actual data. Create simple test cases using data from Oracle's sample schemas: SCOTT, OE, HR etc.
    I actually want something like this:
    Jurisdiction: Bartlesville Police Department, 918-338-4001, http://www.cityofbartlesville.org/departments/police/
    Smith , Carl Sherman      ......
    Smith , Tommy Nesby .....

    Smith , Gabriel Ray      ...
    Smith , Michael Bert   ...I omit the sensitive data with ...
    but right now it shows as this way:
    Jurisdiction: Bartlesville Police Department, 918-338-4001, http://www.cityofbartlesville.org/departments/police/  Smith , Carl Sherman      ......
    Smith , Tommy Nesby .....
    Jurisdiction: Canadian County Sheriff's Office, 405-262-4787, Fax - 405-422-2430   Smith , Gabriel Ray      ...
    Smith , Michael Bert   ...Is that possible to show the data as the upper way?The best way to do this is using a report with a custom named column template as in this example. See the following threads for solutions to similar problems:

  • Is it possible to delete all cross-reference links in a PDF at once?

    I have a 577 page PDF with multiple cross-references on each page.
    Unfortuntely, this causes the document to load pages VERY slowly on my iPad.
    Is it possible to delete these cross-reference links in one shot, rather than one by one?
    I am using Acrobat 9.5, if it matters.
    I tried Advanced - Document Processing - Remove All Links
    But it didn't touch them.
    Thanks

    A simple, but not typically recommended to do this is simply print the PDF to a new PDF. The printing process will eliminate all such markup, including bookmarks. There may be a preflight script to do this or might even be possible with the PDF Optimizer (think I remember such an option, but can't check on this machine).

    Better ask in the iWeb forum.
    Answer : inspector > first icon from the left > uncheck 'Display navigation menu'
    For future reference, also look at the other icons.

    Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * Make sure that you have the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" then click the "Restore Default Set" button

    I'm not techinal so please bear with me. I don't have the bar that allows me to type in a website. I did have a few minutes ago. When I make the page full screen and move my cursor to the top of the page, the bar drops down and I can use it. I've tried restarting my computer, didn't work. Help!

    Well I figured it out, right click the arrow that makes the screen bigger and unclick the Hide Toolbar. I knew it couldn't be that hard.

Now when I try to open one and endless stream of tabs that say "New Tab" scrolls across the top of the page. How do I make it stop. I already went and got office 2010 but it is still doing it. It does not do it if I use Internet Exployer for the browser.
