Make Movie Self-Contained option

I edited some video at home and wanted to bring it to work so I can bring it into DVD SP. I selected File>Export QT Movie and chose Current Settings, it was captured as DV NTSC. I also checked make movie self-contained.
1. Is the idea behind this so I will end up with one file that will not need to reference any of the media or project files on the computer it was captured, so it can just be taken with me?
2. I tried several times to copy the 8GB QT file to an external drive, and close to the end of the process I receive the following error:
Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error Code -1309).
It then continues copying for a few seconds and just stops and nothing ends up on the external drive. I tried rebooting and unplugging the drive and tried again with the same results. Any ideas why it is doing this? Is this a Tiger issue or an issue with my settings in FCP? I even unchecked Make Movie Self-Contained and it still had the same problem when I tried to copy it.
Thanks!!!

If the windows system recognized the drive when connected, and you weren't running a special app like MacDrive on the Windows system, then the drive isn't formatted as Mac OS extended (aka HFS+). It's more likely that it's formatted as FAT 32 since you've used it before to read/write files to and from your Mac. A FAT 32 drive when connected to a Mac will limit file size to 2gb.

Try Mixing Down the audio before export.

  • Exporting movie - self contained = help

    Hello,
I've finished my work in fcp, im ready to export; I need to make 2 different formats for every exported movie.. one is for dvd and the other is for internet (will use compressor)
when i export from fcp using quicktime movie, do I make it self contained or not? self contained takes a lot of space..... once i hand in the files, I will delete all, don't need a copy from that work...
my main question is, does it make any difference if I use compressor with a self contained movie or a NOT-self c m?
    thanks

referenced movies work just fine in compressor so long as you are not about to delete the raw footagen or render files.

  • Final Cut Express wont make make a self contained movie

Until recently I have always been able to export my movies from final cut express HD without any problems. They save as final cut express movie files. Now when I come to export a movie, I click on " make self contained movie" and what I get is a quicktime movie that is split into 3 parts, one named whatever I had told it to save as and the other 2 with the same name but -av1 or -av2 after it. If either of these is deleted the original wont play but they wont open on their own. There is sufficient hard drive space and they are all saved in the same folder. There appears to be a 2GB maximum file size as the first movie is 2 GB the second is 2 GB and the third is whatever is left over. Anything smaller than 4 GB just saves as a 2GB plus whatever is lreft over! They will play if original video clips are deleted so they are independent but wont play if one of the 3 is missing. Please help this is driving me scatty

Is the drive you aresaving to formatted to Mac OS Extended?
Sounds like it could be Mac Standard.
Also check in Prefernces that the file size export limit is not set to 2 gig.

  • How do I make a Self Contained Project?

I'm doing a huge digitization project that involves digitising interviews. My project is full of Bins with the relevant captured footage inside, how can I take one of these bins and either copy it or make it a self contained project so I can take it and import it into a differant project on a differant computer? I would also like to be able to take captured footage from a project on one hard drive and input it onto another project on another hard drive (so that the space taken up by the captured footage id freed up).
Any help would be much apperciated!

MEDIA MANAGER.  Highlight all the footage, then use the MEDIA MANAGER (right click) to either MOVE the footage, or COPY the footage to another location. Opt for COPY...so that you have the media for the current project, and a copy of that on the destination of your choice.

  • What setting do I use to make a self contained video file, not a DVD?

I'm trying to use compressor to create video files to use on a friends Windows PC computer to be displayed from there, but I'm not sure what settings to use. I keep trying different things but I can't seem to get the audio to work. I read another response that the video and audio are saved separately but is there any way of merging them into a "self contained" video file?

SD? HD? Do you need uncompressed (full res)? Can his computer play Quicktime movies? Can his computer play H.264? What format did you shoot, capture, and edit in? What program will the PC use as a player?
The reason there are so many options as presets is because there is no best option. There are many needs for compression. Give more details about your workflow and output needs.

  • Movies self-contained and then lost?

I have been making quicktime exports, self-contained, with most of my projects, but after about 6 months I will go back to look at my exported videos and a search shows up and tells me that the video cannot be found. Is there a problem with my mac, because icon still shows that the video is taking up the same space in my drive as before, do I need to just make regular exports without self-containing the videos?

Self-contained are the safest type of export.
Restart your Mac holding the Shift key down until the log on appears, log on (often just click past the password prompt) and run Disk Utility to correct permissions on all drives (or Repair if Permissions is grayed out)
    Restart

  • Export - QuickTime Move (self contained) - different from project size

I've been chasing a problem of my iMac not being able to play back finished videos, possibly because I don't have enough computer power (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3318100?tstart=0)
While looking at this I just realized something - the completed video is 1920x1080, even though the original source files and FCE project properties are all at 1440x1080.
Is that normal? If not, where should I start looking to find whatever is wrong?

Yes, it is normal.  It's a difference between rectangular pixels and square pixels.

  • How to get self-contained .mov files without FCE opening up?

    Hi all experts,
I have fully rendered my first file, which is a simple text animation.
I did Export > QuickTime Movie. I am sure I tick the MAKE MOVIE SELF CONTAINED box.
When I quit FCE, I went to search for that .mov file. When I click at the file, FCE project file open up as well !!
If I copy this file for my friends, when they click at it, will they be able to see it if they do not have FCE ?
    Thanks

  • How to test if a QT movie is Self-contained?

I have had difficulties in DVD SP because some movies produced in FCE were (inadvertently) created with the box "Make Movie Self-contained" unchecked. I had lost some of my files on my Scratch Disc (render files I think) on which the movies depended and so they would not open and DVD SP itself refused to launch. I recovered from that by devious methods.
However, I now want to confirm or otherwise that each of my movie files is Self-contained, and if not, to re-create them in FCE (if I still have the Capture Scratch for their FCE projects). How can I confirm that please?
    Two possible tests:
    1. Open the movie and do Window -> Show Movie Properties. Select "Video Track" and the "Resources" tab. If the only resource listed is the movie itself, that means the movie is Self-Contained (because it is not listed as relying on any part of FCE's Scratch Disc);
    2. Close the movie. Dismount my (external) FCE Scratch Disc and try to reopen the movie. If it opens, it is Self-Contained (again, because it cannot possibly be reliant on FCE's Scratch Disc).
Is each of these tests definitive and reliable?
    Thanks.

If your render files are definitely on the external drive only, then method 2 is reliable. Depending on the file method 1 may not be. QuickTime still treats it as a complete movie file.

  • Missing sequence in self-contained movie file.

Hello - this has happened several times, so I know better now, to save in a full quality file, however, when exporting, I specifically marked 'make movie self-contained', so that I can delete/trash files and make room for other projects.  Cut to, thinking that I have a self-contained movie, I go to play it, and it gives me the dreaded 'sequence missing' msg... Like I said, I know that I specifically make it self-contained, but then when I go back to it after all the pertaining files have been deleted, it doesn't play.  I would think that this would be the case if I only made it a reference file, but I did indeed make then 'sefl-contained' files.  Thank you...

Hello - thank you for your input... I am going on memory from this, as I just got this 'missing sequence error msg.', but, I believe I may indeed have put in/out markers in the sequence, in the timeline... why does that effect it though?
And the reason I know I didn't delete anything before exporting is because the self-contained file I made worked just fine at the time after I made it.  It wasn't until after I deleted the project, because I was finished with it, and needed to make space, which is what I meant by 'deleted pertaining to files'. Then later I would go back & try opening up the self-contained file, and got the error msg.
At the time, it seemed like everything was rendered properly, but how can that be checked?
    Thanks...

  • Does the choice to export a self contained movie or not appear in FCE?

That's my simple question. Then I will move on.
I found this in the FCE manual under Exporting Sequences to DVD:
    2. Configure the Save dialog as desired.
In most cases, you will leave the Include pop-up menu set to Audio and Video. If you
have created any markers, choose DVD Studio Pro Markers in the Markers pop-up
menu. iDVD can use either self-contained or reference movies, allowing you to decide
whether to make the movie self-contained based on other requirements (disk space
    and so on).

Did you see this in your other post? -
All you need to do for top quality results is this:-
    1. Go to File>Export>QuickTime Movie.
    2. In the Save window that appears give it a title and DO NOT tick the "Make Movie Self-Contained" if you are using it on your present computer and are not deleting any files.
    3. Open iDVD and navigate to your QT movie and drag it into the iDVD's Theme that you have chosen.
    4. Do anything else you want in iDVD and burn the DVD.

  • FCP 6 won't export QT as "self-contained"

I'm trying to export some files as QT's, but even though the "make movie self-contained" box IS checked, they still won't play without opening FCP. I did change playback preferences from FCP to QT, which works on the source computer... but when I move the files to another computer, they still won't play. Any thoughts?

I think we are getting confused with what you want to do here... if all you want to do is open the file up inside QuickTime simply right click or control click - Open With > QuickTime Pro.
This will not open in Final Cut Pro. Also, you never told use what codec you were working in.
Know this - Self Contained has nothing to do with which application opens the movie file. This function determines how the file will be created. By default, a movie file created by Final Cut Pro will try and open with Final Cut Pro. You can change this with the "Get Info" switch, then select QuickTime Pro as the default player.
    Hope this helps,

  • Exporting Non Self Contained

I want to export a sequence but I don't want it to be 1 large file but just the same clips in a different format. I tried unchecking "make movie self-contained" but it didn't do it. Anyway I can do this? Thanks

I want it all to be separate clips so I can smoothcam each one separately. Do you know the best way to do that?
that's not the same thing as your original post at a all.
Pop open the manuals or the online help and read up on using the Optical flow and Smoothcam systems. Very carefully. the biggest gotchas is that the analysis wil be performed on the netire media clip unless you do an export. However, if you do a reference movie, I don't think you can set ina dn outs. Smoothcam will still attempt to look at the entire media beig pointed at.
