Make my After Effects composition into an Encore menu... How?

I'm new to After Effects, but have had a fair bit of experience with Encore. I've managed to create a rather cool looking menu in AE for a DVD i'm going to create in Encore, but it is obviously an AE composition, which consists of a Photoshop layer and a video layer. I know how to add buttons etc. for Encore in Photoshop/AE, but what I can't figure out is how to take the composition I've created in After Effects into Encore and have it as a menu?
What I have created is fairly simple. It's just one Photoshop layer (excluding the buttons ofcourse) and a single video layer, manipulated in 3D space so it appears as though it's showing on a TV screen in my Photoshop image. I've seen tutorials for creating a simple video button in Encore, but what I'm doing is somewhat more complicated as the video layer is blended in with the Photoshop layer in After Effects, so I can't link to it separately.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance...

Moving backgrounds to menus need to be imported into Encore as video files unless you are able to use Dynamic Link to streamline the process (I don't have DL so can't help with practical advice).
If you are animating the button images, you will not be able to use them as buttons until you transition into the Encore menu itself.
There's a video tutorial on animating menus in After Effects either on a DVD in the box or on line at http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/

  • I can't import After effects composition into sequence timeline

    Hello everyone
I am using CS5.5 Master Collection and I have Premiere sequence which I have imported into After Effects via Dynamic Link; I have added some effects etc... Now I am trying to pull the sequence back into Premiere which I have done via Dynamic Link (import after effects composition), which imports the composition fine, however it wont allow me to add the composition to the timeline.  It will however play the composition in the source window.
Has anyone else come accross this and how do I fix it?
I have tried looking on youtube and I can see it working for others and no one specifically shows or does anything different to what I am doing.. Please help me.
    Kind regards,
    Milan

I see what you are saying.  I tested that scenario, and you are correct, it doesn't let you:
    - create a premiere pro sequence
    - open after effects
    - import that premiere pro sequence
    - make changes to that sequence in after effects
    - open premiere
    - import that after effects sequence
which is essense, would be a link back around back to a premiere pro sequence, so it's been dynamically linked twice.
It would be interesting if it did allow it, you could do some weird looping stuff, or probably blow up the software .
Remember, whatever you send over to AE in this method is "replaced with after effects composition", you aren't going to be able to "edit" it back in Premiere.  You replaced that edit with an AE composition.  You have to work with that in mind.
The main thing about dynamic link is it elimates exporting & importing to get to another program, by just using the project file itself instead as a clip.
Hope that clarifies things a bit for you,

  • Audio Troubles wiz after effect composition file throught encore.

So i run the CS3 master collection. Got a server dual core xeon 3ghz,4GB of ram and a 7800 GT Geforce video card.
My trouble started when i wanted to make a commercial DVD for some customers.
Been creating and editing videos assets, animated menus in after effects(i kept low setting to be sure i would have enought ram memory to run it then in encore. Until there everything was fine.
The nightmare started when i had to compile all of this in Encore.
The DVD by itself including menus, transitions and video footage are supposed to be 2.9 GB once the asset are transcoded (DVD is not even full).
Now it took me an insane amount of time before i could render some preview version of it. After running computer all nite long, finally get it burn, but keep on being freezed for long time when it came to get files transcoded in the building process.
Anyway after getting dvd burned, went to check on it and some part of the dvd, (video assets mainly) had missing soundtrack, or get soundtrack from transition assets.
So now i am extremly frustrated and ********* at Adobe, don t know what to do. Even think that Adobe Dynamic Link is the biggest joke ever... Can t even run after effects and encore together... So when they said on the CS3 master collection box that requirement needed is 1 to 2 GB of ram, i cannot beleive it.
For now the CS3 master collection might work on the paper but not on my computer...
Anyway if anyone would have the same audio problems and found a solution to it plz share it. It would save me from angry customers...
    Cheers.
    Arno.

So tried to render the project by taking off one RAM stick from the computer (renaming my after effects files and redoing my encore composition also with an other name) and did work (still did it with vista business as the OS tho, because I ve seen Neil's post to late and already format the computer , couldn't be bother to redo it to put an xp version :p ).
    Cheers for that.
By the way I did READ the system requirements and they say : "Microsoft windows xp with sp2 OR windows vista home premium, BUSINESS, ultimate, or enterprise"... after I reckon they also say "certified for 32-bits editions" but if it not 100% certified for 64-bits edition why do they put Vista business on it ???
It's also right on the box : "more RAM recommended when running multiple components". Anyway I m not a computer specialist, and obviously differents setting must work better than others. Also, I won't take my computer retailer advice for granted anymore because they tried to make me buy heaps of components to run it when finally it wasn't a matter of boosting the computer...
Anyway thanks you all for your support, it's been precious, really appreciate it, I am now an happy Adobe customer again :)
PS: To come back at my initial sound troubles, it vanished when I renamed my After effects compo and redo my encore project.
    Cheers,
    Arno.

  • Cannot Import After Effects Composition into Premiere CS5.5.

    So here's my issue:
I made an After Effects Project and I'm using Dynamic Link to bring it over into Premiere.  My project, and all of its compositions are fine. But, I recently created a new composition and created my animation on it or whatever. Now, when I go to import it to Premiere, its not there. I've saved, I've tried precomposing, and it lets me import other compositions from that very same After Effects Project. I've saved it, I've closed and reopened both premiere and after effects, I've restarted my computer. And please, oh please. Don't tell me I need to reinstall all of my programs. I get that answer all too often.
    Extra Details:
I noticed that my composition (inside After Effects) is open and editable at the bottom of the screen. But, in the "bin area" or whatever it's called, my composition isn't listed there after I created it and did all this work and I believe Dynamic Link is using that list to import the project over to Premiere. So how would I get it to show up on that list?

Not sure what you are saying. If there is no comp in the project window (or "bin area" in your words), it doesn't exist - short of perhaps having hidden in one of the folders there. Clarify what exactly you are doing. Also screenshots of your respecive windows and import dialogs might help (attach them using the camera icon).  And finally, do provide some system info, what footage types you use, comp settings, sequence settings in Premiere and so on. The weirdest things can influence this stuff from some bad comp naming to hard technical issues anything is possible.

  • Dynamic Link/ Replace with After Effects Composition between Premiere Pro CC to After Effects CC won't work. Says "importer reported a generic error"

Trying to use the "Replace with After Effects Composition" to use Warp Stabilizer on a clip and transfer it back into Premiere Pro CC. The action is not  "grayed out" it allows me to click it and it opens up After Effects, then asks to open a new composition, but it doesn't open up the clip for me to work on it.
Also is the Dynamic Link and Replace with After Effects Composition the same thing?
Ive watched several tutorials and read threads but I still don't understand who to fix my problem.
I have both CC versions of PP and AE, if that makes any difference.

You have not provided any system information, no details about your sequence settings, your footage and whatnot. Nobody can even guess what may be going on.

  • After Effects Composition Not Refreshing in Premiere Pro

I'm using a late 2013 Macbook pro 15 inch 2.3ghz with Creative Cloud CC, updated as of 27/5/14.
I am linking after effects compositions in my premiere pro sequence. After pressing enter to render my effects and watch my project so far, i'll go to change some text in my linked after effects composition, save it, and go back into premiere. The project is not updated in premiere, even when scrubbing through, restarting both apps, even restarting the computer. The only fix i have found is to click on 'Delete Render Files in to out" and then re-render the effects in my entire sequence, which is very inconvenient when all I want is to see a single small change.
How do I get my sequence to automatically update when I make a change in a linked composition?

    Ann,
I understand what you are saying. I'm not really even concerned or talking about Dynamic Linking per se. No matter what way you bring in an AE comp it's always gonna be dynamic linked. Even if you import it like it was a regular piece of media it's always gonna be DL'd in the Premiere comp.
    Jim,
I agree and understand why  the 2nd diesn't work. I wouldn't expect the 'replace with AE' in premiere to work mainly because whatever media you used in the AE comp is not brought over. Wish it would treat the AE comp like it was a piece of media and just carry it over.
    About the other...,.
Also are you sure were talking about the same thing? I'm talking about opening only After Effects then File - Import - Premiere Pro project.  When I do this everywhere there was an AE comp in my PR timeline. It is now missing. Even if manually replace it with AE comp in AE, it has no idea where the media is. I have to manually re-import every AE project and stick it back in the timeline.
Have you tried it with CS4? I don't have CS3 anymore but I seem to remember it wasn't a problem back then.
Also Jim if you still say this works for you, would you mind if I uploaded a .prproj with say one piece of media, then a simple AE (only titles or solids) would you mind checking it on your version of AE?

  • Premiere Pro playback Footage issue - W/ After Effects Composition

Hi, I've had a very irritating issue as of late.
I've been working on a project for the past couple weeks and it has been going well.
I use AVCHD 1080p 29.97fps 24p footage. It plays perfectly fine in my Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects CS4. I have used After Effects to replace many parts of the footage and has gone very well... Except one piece of footage.
For what ever reason, it plays terribly only when I apply an After Effects composition to it. If it is the raw footage, it's fine. If I alter it in after effects it's fine. But if it's altered from AE and I attempt to play it in Premiere Pro it repeats old frames. A mixture of stuttering and several frames back through out the whole clip.
I have NO idea what caused it or why it's happening.
    Does anyone know?
    Thank You.

AVCHD footage is highly compressed using a GOP compression scheme. This makes it unsuitable for heavy processing and subject to all kinds of errors and artifacts when re-compressed. The best workflow is to convert (transcode) your AVCHD footage to a lossless or nearly lossless codec that preferably uses YUV color space. I work mostly on a Mac so my preference is Apple ProRez 444. I transcode everything that I work on that is going to require more than just straight cuts.
Try transcoding (Adobe Media Encoder or Compressor or even Quick Time Pro are a few of the options) your problematic clip, replace the AVCHD footage in your AE comp with the transcoded footage, then re-render to a lossless or nearly lossless codec. Bring your new render into PPro and render a preview. Let us know if this fixes your problem.

  • "Replace with After Effects composition" in PP CS6 causes crash in AE CS6

    Hello,
When I right click on a movie-file in a Premiere Pro seqence and choose "Replace with After Effects composition" AF starts, it asks me what I want the file name to be, "save" this and go on. I can see the interface for a short while, then it crashes and closes. In PP I get the error "The importer reported a generic error"
I have the latest versions of both PP and AE, downloaded from Creative Cloud.
What can I do to solve this?
By the way - when clicking on an audio track, "Edit in Audition" is greyed out... Problems with Dynamic link?
    Regards,
    Håkan
    WIN7, 16 GB RAM Intel Core i7 920 @ 2,67GHz

    Fuzzy,
    I have now tried what you told me (and some more), without any success;
    - Cleared all the files in the named folders
    - reinstalled After Effects
    - deactivated and reactivated the suite
    Every time I try to:
    - right click a video file in PP and choose "replace with...."
    - copies a video file and pastes into AE...
    AE crashes.
When I copy into AE it works until I drag the clip to "New composition", then it crashes.
Hopefully you, or anyone else, have more suggestions. I really need some rain on this clip...:)
    UPDATE:
I have now tested with other footage, An MPEG-clip from my Sony (.m2ts) - this works well, both when I copy and paste, and when I use the "Replace..." within PP. The clip can be played in timeline without any problems.
Using the "Replace..." also works well "back in" PP - the effects are there when switching to PP.
However - when I add an XDCAM-HD 422 Movie (.MXF) file to this project it is ok, I can scratch (is that the correct english for using the mouse to "browse" the file in timeline?) this file in a comp, but as soon as I press "spacebar" to make it play "by itself", AE crashes.

    Håkan

  • Premiere Pro - replace After Effects composition with original footage?

I have a Premiere Pro project where I have replaced some clips with linked After Effects compositions (= doing the grading and stabilization in AE).
Is there a way of undoing this and easily reverting to the original clips in the place of the linked compositions? I'm thinking of a command that would simply restore the original clips.
    Thanks!

No such animal, I'm afraid, though it would be nice. You have a couple options:
Always, always, always be sure to duplicate your sequence and stash it away somewhere in your project before doing the Replace. That way you have something to go back to if you need it. Always.
Immediately after initiating a Replace (and letting the comp be created in AE with all footage imported), Edit > Undo (Ctrl+Z) the action in Premiere. This will undo the Replace and remove the comp from Premiere, BUT the comp will still be created and all footage placed in it in After Effects. After you do your work in AE, just drag the AE comp into Premiere, and plop it on a track above your original edit. That way, you can easily tweak the original edit in Premiere, and then copy and paste stuff back in AE to your DL'ed comp, if you need to.
This will have varying degrees of success, but may be your only salvage if it's too late for the first two: you can copy and paste your footage items from your AE comp into a new Premiere Pro sequence, or you can use File > Export > Premiere Pro Project from AE, and then import that into Premiere. Either way, it's going to be a little ugly due to the way that AE and Premiere work differently with their respective timelines (layers vs. tracks), but it can save your bacon when you need it. I've actually used this method to recover hopelessly busted Premiere Pro projects, as well; it takes some rebuilding, but at least you don't lose everything.

  • After Effects Compositions Duplicating over other comps in Adobe Premiere.

    Hi all,
My issue revolves around Adobe Premiere and After Effects, in particular the feature in Premiere which gives you the option to 'Replace with After Effects Composition'.
I had severail clips I wanted to do some frame painting on in my timeline, so I started with the first, used after effects, all was fine. Did the same on the second one, again, all fine, then on the third one it all went a bit wrong. After completing my frame painting on after effects, I clicked save and then closed the composition. Upon returning to Adobe Premiere and viewing my timeline the clip I had just edited was as expected, but the previous one was now a dublicate of the one I had just edited. From this point forward no matter what I did every time I tried to alter a clip in after effects it just duplicated over the other clips.
Painting frames at the best of times makes me lose the will to live, but this glitch has made it almost impossible for me to work.
Other details, I save each After Effects composition with a different file name in a different folder. I tried all sorts of different ways around it but nothing.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue, or know where I could find out. It's incredibly frustrating when you spend 10 minutes painting out dust off a video to then realise the one you did before is now overwritten on the premiere timeline.
    I need help!
    Louis

Before you go back and re-do your tedious retouch...
you can try opening Pr, making your Ae comps offline, exit Pr.
Go to your 'Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files' folder, delete all.
    Open Pr, relink your comps.
I've never really tried to send a series of clips to AE and edit them all as one composition, I'll give that a try.
    note:
Along with sending multiple clips via DL to Ae for touchup in one comp,
When I use 'Replace with Ae Comp' in the Timeline, I will save
the newly created Ae comp, exit Ae, return to Premiere and hit 'Undo'.
This will restore the original clips to the Timeline for future reference.
Then I will use File > Adobe Dynamic Link > Import Ae Composition to
bring the new comp into Premiere, add a new layer to the Timeline
and drop in the comp (or replace the clips in a duplicate Sequence).

  • Replacing a subclip with an After Effects Composition doesn't work properly

I have a Premiere Project with DV PAL footage. I have gone through my footage and identified all sorts of subclips in my project, and arranged them into bins.  For a few, on the sequence timeline, I want to replace them with After Effects Compositions so I can add some effects.
If I right-click on a designated subclip (or part of a subclip), and choose "Replace with After Effects Composition", After Effects starts up and I end up with an After Effects project containing 3 items:
    - a composition called "MyProject Linked Comp 1" (duration: length of sub clip, but the comp's layer itself (the next comp) has a duration of zero, so I just see black)
    - another composition called "My Subclip" (duration: length of subclip, starting at beginning of original video footage, not at start of subclip),
    - and then the full original video file also called "My Subclip" (and I mean the full original video file that the subclip points to).  This is full length.
The linked Composition is therefore viewed as being blank in After Effects, and is returned as such in Premiere Pro.
What does work properly is if I simply drag a selected clip (in/out) from the Source Monitor in Premiere Pro to the sequence timeline, and then right click and choose  "Replace with After Effects Composition".
Then I end up with an After Effects project containing:
    - a composition called "MyProject Linked Comp 2" (duration: length of selected clip, and the comp's layer itself (the next comp) has the correct duration, so I see the selected clip!)
    - another composition called "My SourceVideo" (duration: length of full original video, starting at beginning of original video footage, not at start of subclip),
    - and then the full original video file also called "My SourceVideo" (and I mean the full original video file that the selected clip points to).  This is full length.
In this case the linked Composition is therefore viewed as being the selected clip in After Effects, and is returned as such in Premiere Pro.
So subclips don't work as I would expect them. I have also tried with a few different video formats. Can anyone else reproduce this behaviour, or even better, find a way to make it work?
I am running Windows Vista x64 Ultimate, 8GB ram, CS4
Message was edited by: bobbymacadobe - added system info

I had the same issue. Created multiple subclips from various parts of a master, mixed subclips on the timeline (all from the same master clip) and when I replace it with an AE comp is send it over with 1 subclip only (eg I had clips for showroom and warehouse, it only send showroom) so any refences to the clips it didn't send were blank!
So I had to replace all the clips with the master clip (I would like to know if there is a quick way to revert subclips back to master, had to do it manually and it was a pain) and now it is working fine. This doesn't mean subclips don't work; if all the clips are derived from the same subclip it worked for me.

  • Problems importing After Effects files into FCP

    Hey guys--
So I have this odd problem importing my after effects clips into FCP. I am working in standard DV, and my After Effects composition settings match my FCP settings.
I am snipping little bits from my FCP project, exporting them to QT, adding stuff on top in AE, then shooting the clip back to FCP. The problem is, whent he clip goes back to FCP it is slightly "pinched." It's not really thaat visible, unless I try to edit a cut in the same shot. The after effects clip is a couple pixels wider, and the quality is a little blurry. If it is a hard edit, you wouldn't even notice the difference, but the two shots together make it pretty noticeable. I'm not set to square pixels or anything, and i get the same results no matter which codec i render in AE with.
    Any ideas?

  • Issues with replacing clip in Premiere with After Effects composition

So basically, i want to track a title to a piece of footage, so i've made my ins and outs and my footage is placed on my timeline in premiere with my title over top. Now I select the two pieces in premiere (the title and the clip) and I hit replace with after effects composition, and it ADOBE does it's thing etc.
but now in my AE project window I have two copies of my title file and two copies of my mp4 clip.
two of them are pre loaded into my timeline and the appropriate ins/outs which is perfect but I can't seem to do anything like tracking to them,
in my project window AE is referring to the ones that show up in the timeline as "compositions" while the extra files that aren't in the timeline are "mp4" and "psd" (the actual file types)
now. if i just delete the two "compositions" that are masquerading as files in my timeline and drag down my mp4 / psd then my tracking becomes available and all is wonderful
    EXCEPT
my in's and out's from premiere aren't there and I have to go about all of that all over again and it's very annoying
    any ideas?

Copy that! Thanks for the help as it is!
I'll likely have to do as you suggested in the interest of my turnaround but if anyone else out there has any suggestions for my original question of utilizing the dynamic link between PP and AE without the issue mentioned I'd be super stoked!

  • Import After Effects composition - blending modes will not transfer to Premiere

I have a lower thirds composition I want to import from After Effects CC into Premiere Pro CC. While I have no problem importing the composition, I do have a problem with Premiere Pro displaying properly the blending modes I set in AE.
I've tried every blending mode... (I read somewhere Premiere Pro is only compatible with some AE blending modes.)
What appears in Premiere is a completely flat composition.
Is it possible to import an After Effects composition, including blending modes? Any suggestions?
Blending Mode effect shown below, Soft Light. (After Effects first, Premiere Pro second.)

    @ Jim Simon
Here's a sample of the lower-third in various stages. Each image is only a few frames of eachother (to show it's animated). As you can see in the final image (in Premiere), it's as tho the blend mode imports – you can see the light gray uglyness – but doens't blend.
After Effects composition, without blending mode.

  • Version update and now "replace with after effects composition" is greyed out.

Hi, I've been working on a project for a while now (using Premiere Pro cc and After Effects cc).
Then CC 2014 came out. I installed those new Versions. To make sure that everything still works I've continued working with cc versions. Now if I want to "Replace with After Effects Composition" (in the premiere pro project opend in Version cc) it doesn't work since it's greyed out.
    Can somebody help me?

    Ok guys...I got it...
Its not a *mov that it missplaced, its another dynamic link to AE...so dynamic link to dynamic link seems not to work? I accidently linked that clip and worked on it in AE in the old aep from yesterday..but still wondern why AE get confused loading it...the "old aep comp" is full with others comp...could that be the reason...?
