Make my Illustrator file 3D with lighting?

Hello, I have a stock photo of a photo studio i'm using as my background. I have a vector image created in Illustrator i'd like to "place" into my background, with the end product being the photographer taking model shots of my fancy vector image.
Thus I'd like to add some depth/extrusion to my imported Illustrator file, as well as setup lighting so that shadows on the image mimic the placement of lights in the stock image, as well as adding shadows onto the floor.
Unfortunately I'm using an integrated video card, so I cannot get Adobe Repousse to work on my system. Any other thoughts? Links to tutorials would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

There are ways to fake it, if you can't get it to work properly.
To do an extrude, copy/paste the image (ctrl-j) The back image fill it with black, move it for an offset. repeat the process, continue until you have the depth you need.
For a drop shadow, copy/paste the image (ctrl-j) The back image fill it with black, move it to taste and feel free to stretch it, warp it, etc.. Lower the opacity and/or apply a blur.

How to make a PDF file short ( with less memory)?

    @nalinss
There are two ways: "Save as.." usually optimises size, but there is also "Optimize PDF" in the menu with many options what to exclude and to reduce in quality. Be careful here, as pictures can become very bad.
A note: the size of a PDF vastly depends on from what source it is created. For example, if you draw some vector graphics in Visio and print to Adobe Printer, the resulting PDF is usually quite small in file size. Opening it in Illustrator and saving it again after you, let's say, just moved one line, can make it 10x as big. This is due to big overhead, Illustrator creates and this can not be reduced anymore in Acrobat later on. Sometimes it helps to convert or "save as" such an inflated PDF to a different format like EPS or HTML and print or convert again to PDF.
So, if you created the PDF yourself and you still have the source, you may adjust settings in the export/print dialog to make it smaller.

  • How to make 2 Node File Cluster with SAS Disks

    Hello,
I cant fine any detailed, specific information and answer on this question
I have 2 Servers, Say HP, with 4 SAS disks each,  1 for OS (2012R2Data) and 3 available.
I want to create fault tolerant SMB 3.0 share for my Hyper-v nodes, to make hyper-v FT cluster afterwards.
So, I see inr equirements that SAS disks will work, but during creating cluster, I can not manage Cluster to see disks from both servers (total 6 free units)
If it is made via ISCSi target, both servers have access to that targets and cluster sees all available through iSCSI disks, but how to mnake SAS disk available to other server?
Is it possible what I need with this configuration?  is it a option to make each server iSCSI target and initiator? (but it would be way complicated and slow, I think).
so, what I have misunderstood, how to make FT file Cluster with 2 servers with SAS drives?
Any info about this SPECIFIC config would be welcomed, or any general step-by-step guides  (please, do not link me guides with other config, like iscsi or with additional servers, I have seen a lot of them :()

You cannot do what you want with a Microsoft built-in tools. MSFT require you to take your SAS disks away from your servers, buy a SAS JBOD (better more then one to get advantage of a so-called "enclosure awareness" and avoid single point of failure) and
configure Clustered Storage Spaces with now *external* SAS drives. See:
How to Configure a Clustered Storage Space in Windows Server 2012
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/02/10314262.aspx
    Prerequisites
A minimum of three physical drives, with at least 4 gigabytes (GB) capacity each, are required to create a storage
    pool in a Failover Cluster.
The clustered storage pool MUST be comprised
of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connected physical disks. Layering any form of storage subsystem, whether an internal RAID card or an external RAID box, regardless of being directly connected or connected via a storage fabric, is not supported.
Windows Server 2012 R2 had flexed out some limitations so now ReFS is supported (but useless as VMs cannot be integrity checked and protected) and now you can use parirty spaces (also useless as they are DOG slow with a typical VM workload dominated by small
writes, say 4KB write initiates 256KB+ parity stripe read-modify-write update). Core requirements "SAS everywhere" is still there.
So if you don't want to mess with SAS JBODs you may give a try to a virtual SAN solutions available on the market. They can cluster a pair of hosts (even with a single port SATA drives) w/o any external hardware, only Ethernet required. There are even free
    options available. See:
    Free Virtual SAN
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/native-san-for-hyper-v-free-edition
Also Google (or Bing?) for DataCore and SteelEye as they have very similar native (Windows-based) offerings. + there's bunch of a VM-running storage doing more or less the same.
Hope this helped a bit :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Why does a my layered Illustrator file open with only one layer, when opened by someone else?

I am using CS6, as is the other user.  When they open the file in Illustrator all the artwork is on one layer, even though the original file has numerous layers, and opens with these layers when I open it even now.
I have never come across this problem before in all the years I have used Illustrator and have had no joy when trying to search for this problem.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated as it is confusing us!
    Thank you.

    Hi Mike, Wade & Larry,
Thank you so much for your replies.
Since I posted this issue, I was later informed that the other user is infact opening my files with CS5 and so a quick solution to this was saving it down to a previous version! Sorry for the confusion!
This problem then becomes clear that it was a version error, but I have always had an error message come up if I try to open something that was created in a newer verion - is this no longer the case?
I have been assured no pop up messages appear when opening the file which I find odd, and also that this layer compression has only just started happening even though many files have been back and forth previously.
A little mystery! At least for now it is all working ok again
Thank you all very much, greatly appreciated.

  • How to make a jar file downloadable with IE

    hello,
    I just bought a website:
    http://www.frozenfountain.net/
and I put a jar file on it called Logo.jar
Using Mozilla, the jar file downloads as expected, but with Internet Explorer, it tries to download it as .zip file.
How do I get it to download as a .jar file with IE?
    thanks

Just post a link to the Jar. Mozilla will download
it as a jar. Windows will download it as a zip.
Only one link. No problem, really. ;-)There is a problem. People who arent as good with computers as you are won't know how to run the jar file after downloading with IE.
At school, I told someone to download the file, which they did with IE. It downloaded to desktop as a zip. They extracted and were left with a bunch of .class files.

You'd be using your script to turn your server into a host for spam! Sanitize your fields to prevent injection attacks! Security should be the firt priority followed by functionality. • Illustrator files opening with all layers flattened into 1.

    http://tinypic.com/r/afhcg5/5
This image is directly from a customer’s email. An Illustrator template for custom candy bags is sent to the customer and has about 10 layers on it.  Somehow they always come back as Layer 1, flattened.  I am opening them up in CS5. Can anyone advise on why a multi layered file constantly comes back from our customers as a single layer? Having all layers is very important for these bags to print properly. Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, we are sending a layered .PDF that was created from an .AI file.  We are also sending the .AI file as well.  I am trying to save the .AI file back to CS3 so our customers can open the files.
We are not zipping anything though, and we are not requiring our customers to zip anything back either.  We are going to start doing this....

  • Placing photoshop eps's into Illustrator - file size

I used to place very large/high res photoshop eps files into Illustrator (as low res proxy) and it would allow my Illustrator file size to stay very small, however, once I switched to CS5 I noticed the way I was saving the eps's wouldn't show up in Illustrator, it would show as an empty box until I resaved the eps with tiff preview and jpg encoding.  But this makes my Illustrator file huge which is not what I want.  Does anyone that creates large scale graphics know what I'm talking about?  Thanks

This setup has been working for years…
Does that mean that you don't even plan to update Photoshop CS to CS6 13.0,6?  That would be a grave mistake.  There were many substantial bug fixes along the way.
Updating to CS 13.0.6 is completely, totally free.  No expense at all.
If your issue appeared "suddenly", delete and recreate your Photoshop and your Illustrator's preferences.
But update to 13.0.6 ASAP.  There's absolutely no excuse and no valid reason for staying with known buggy versions.  That's just plain nonsense.
If you insist on staying with your "setup" for the reason you state, please don't bother addressing any replies to me.

  • Best way to save illustrator files to place in Indesign

    Hello,
I have played with many options. but can someone tell me the best way to save an illustrator file, so I can place it InDesign and it will print faster yet still hold true to quality and color?
Is it .ai, eps, pdf, tiff, or .png ..I didn't like .gif, or jpeg.....
The place time and print time is brutal in InDesign and when I a create PDF file the redraw in acrobat is terrible, if they were placed .ai files.
So just looking for the best case scenario to have faster printing and placing in InDesign and no redraw in PDF files.
Just looking for some guidance and advise.
    thanks!

    Hello,
What exactly is that flattening doing? I see it puts everything in one layer...is that all it does?
When I place them in InDesign, the performance is about the same and when I make the PDF, they still rebuild there.
Are there any options for flattening, or just the flatten from the layers menu?
    maybe I am missing something.
    thanks!!
    babs
Flattening is not just a reference to layers, it is a reference to transparency effects (opacities, soft masks such as drop shadows, and blend modes). Flattening makes a mess of the file. If you don't have to flatten, don't.
If you do have to flatten, do it from InDesign. This means placing the native Illustrator file saved with PDF compatibility (default behavior)
Again, never flatten unless you have to, and save it for last. If you don't need to flatten, output from InDesign using PDF/X-4. When you preserve transparency, output time is sped up considerably, and you don't end up with stitching artifacts (white lines) in the PDF.

  • Old Illustrator file, revised to new, saved to pdf, reverting back to old Illustrator file

After making a new Illustrator file from an old one, then saving it as a pdf, the new Illustrator file reverts back to old one. I have been using the pdf to make the Illustrator file again (luckily I've saved it as editable) but I don't always want to add this extra procedure. Does anyone have this issue or any clues on how this happens and how to fix the problem?

when you made your changes and then saved as, you saved your changes to a new file. your original file closes without saving and the open file in illustrator is the new one (in your case the PDF).
evertime you save as you are making a new file without affecting the old file.
you should first save your changes and then save as. but after the save as, the opened file will no longer be the original file.
if you do a Save As Copy. then you will be saving a new file which will be closed and your original file will remain open.

  • How to make PDF file size smaller from an Illustrator file without changing the quality or size (length and width) of the file?

Is there a way to make a 30x42 size (40 GB) Illustrator file as a PDF but make the file smaller in size (able to email to clients) with out compromising the quality of the file or the size of the file?

If you are working in RGB you can embed a colour profile. Embed ICC Profiles is one of the Acrobat save options. It will increase files size dramatically.
When you save your pdf you can choose the compression method for placed images. Default is ZIP which is really no compression at all for pixel images. Instead you should opt for JPG compression (of varying degree according to how sensitive the images are to compression).
You should also examine the other Acrobat save options. To minimize file size you should not have any of the options checked (Preserve Illustrator Editing Capability, Embed page Thumbnails etc. etc.).
40 gigabytes for a file like the one you show is ridiculous. Did you maybe embed the placed images? If so, don’t. Keep them linked unless you really need to embed them.

  • Placing an illustrator file with "white" objects add process black to PDF

Ran into this problem today with InDesign CS5:
I am trying to create a document with only one (spot) color, pantone 293 in this case.
Placed some illustrator files in this document, all of them also only contain pantone 293. However, they also contain some "white" objects. Now my problem appears to be that "white" in illustrator is defined as "0% gray" by default. So when I export my document as PDF from inDesign, i get a PDF with both spot color pantone 293 and black. Strange thing is, I tried making the "white" objects 0% pantone 293 instead of 0% gray, but the PDF still exports with black process color.
Just plain telling my printing company to ignore the black process color altogether would be foolish i guess, since there are objects underneath the illustrator files which need to be knocked out by the "white".
    Any ideas?

If the problem isn't a profile conflict as Peter suggests, you might try setting up a preflight profile for 1 spot color that will catch uses of CMYK black. When you export a PDF from ID the CMYK channels always exist in the exported PDF, so you may need a preflight check to make sure CMYK plates are empty.
This allows only 1 spot color, defined as Lab. Any use of black would throw an error:
Here the white box is defined as Paper 0|0|0|0 CMYK and I get an error
Defining the box as 0% Orange is OK

  • Trouble saving a pdf from In Design with Illustrator files linked.

I have trouble saving a pdf from In Design. Most of the files i've linked are Illustrator files with size up to 70mb.
I am getting out of memory message   The In Design file isn't that big - about 9mb.
    HELP!!!!!!

It did not help to close and reopen it.
Not sure what you mean with exporting in chunks but if you mean exporting page for page , so it didn't work either.
I think that i'll try to reduce the size of Illustrator files , but I 'm not sure what will be the optimum size for that In Design won't crush again.
Or maybe i should make the presentation in illustrator instead? It take some time to save pdf from illustrator when the original file is about 90mb, but still it works.

  • Photoshop cs4 makes huge files - but with Aperture Whats the biggest file ?

When editing w/Photoshop cs4 by adding layers and masks etc, This makes HUGE files - but with using Aperture alone, what's the biggest file size when editing a RAW file?? (??? _Kb ??? __ mgB ????)
I think I heard -12kb. True ?_________ From what little I understand. Aperture changes the pixels once you have finished the editing. Or to put it another away, Aperture replaces the old or original pixels with the edited final pixels you prefer. IE -lighter darker. and with that said. is this still a RAW IMAGE?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
It would seem that none of what you report hearing is accurate. A RAW file downloaded into Aperture, remains as the Master for this image, and is never changed -- that is why Aperture is said to utilize non-destructive editing. When editing in Aperture, only a small file of edit detail is saved, and no actual new version needs to be created until you Export for some purpose.
When you send an image file from Aperture to Photoshop to be edited, it typically will be a version created as a TIFF file, although there are 4 choices in the Preferences -- TIFF, TIFF 16-bit, PSD, and PSD 16-bit. When finished editing, the image is Saved in PS, that file is available to Aperture, and the version created for sending to PS will change to reflect those changes made in PS.
Aperture cannot send an edited RAW file to PS in this fashion, but you can Export the RAW Master, to later be opened in Photoshop.
You should watch all the available online tutorials about Aperture, and possibly buy a book as well.
Aperture may have trouble with super-sized images, but I have not had trouble with those in the range of 100 MB or less. Larger ones than that would likely be from scans and not from editing an image shot with your camera in Photoshop.
