Make PDFs right size to send?

I used a friend's scanner to scan in some color ads (I'm a copywriter) that I need to send as PDFs. I scanned them full size (about 8 1/2 X 11) into iPhoto and exported them as JPGs. Then I saved them as PDFs in Word, since I don't have Adobe writeable or Photoshop. I ended up with PDFs ranging from 1 to 6 MB each, which seems too big. I've tried to email them (in pairs to stay below my ISP's limit of 14MB per message) on a couple of wireless networks and it's still so slow it's impossible. It would take hours.
What am I doing wrong? What's a good range of file size to make PDFs easily sendable, and how can I reconfigure these files to make them smaller but still legible? I tried reducing size in iPhoto but it just made image too small and illegible when magnified.
Thanks for any advice!

There isn't any "right" size for PDFs; they take as much space as they need for the type of file you scanned. You might save some space if you create a .zip archive of them, but not much.
It's probably easier for you and your friend to setup a Box.net account, which is free for a 1 Gb account. After that, you can upload the files to your account there, then add him or her to your list of contacts and drag and drop the files you want to transfer onto their contact name, which will transfer them to their account, from which they can then download them.
Hope this helps,
Mulder

  • How to make PDF file size smaller from an Illustrator file without changing the quality or size (length and width) of the file?

    Is there a way to make a 30x42 size (40 GB) Illustrator file as a PDF but make the file smaller in size (able to email to clients) with out compromising the quality of the file or the size of the file?

    If you are working in RGB you can embed a colour profile. Embed ICC Profiles is one of the Acrobat save options. It will increase files size dramatically.
    When you save your pdf you can choose the compression method for placed images. Default is ZIP which is really no compression at all for pixel images. Instead you should opt for JPG compression (of varying degree according to how sensitive the images are to compression).
    You should also examine the other Acrobat save options. To minimize file size you should not have any of the options checked (Preserve Illustrator Editing Capability, Embed page Thumbnails etc. etc.).
    40 gigabytes for a file like the one you show is ridiculous. Did you maybe embed the placed images? If so, don’t. Keep them linked unless you really need to embed them.

  • Make PDF file size smaller for scans

    I'm using a fairly high DPI setting on my scanner.  Is there anyway to adjust the size of the PDF file after the scan??? Or do I have to adjust the scan settings to a lower DPI?? Thanks!

    Yes, in Acrobat, run the PDF Optimizer and select: Images > Image settings
    and select the downsample settings to suit your needs for the type of image the scan is (color, grayscale, monochrome).

    Hi heathers,
    You would need to print the file to a new PDF with the appropriate page size.

    The quickest way is to print to a new PDF and use shrink to fit. Be sure you set the paper size in the printer properties. Normally this is not recommended, but it is a quick approach. You would loss any bookmarks and other markup with the print.

  • Saving Adobe PDF Page Size without Admin Rights?

    Ok to get started, to define the limits of my environment for replication:
    I'm using Windows XP SP3 and have tried Adobe Acrobat 8, 9, and X, my computer is on a network at work, and my user rights are limited.
    Open Printing Preferences, Click Add...
    The "Add Custom Paper Size" window appears, give a new name and define sizes of the paper.
    Lets say I'm printing to a large format say 36" Tall by 108" Long (3ft x 9ft)
    Click Add/Modify, the window goes away, focus again on Adobe PDF Printing Preferences. Click the drop down box for Adobe PDF Page Size:
    The page size I just added to the list is not there!
    The solution to the this problem is to have Administrative Rights to your machine in order to add custom paper sizes.
    Note to Adobe Acrobat Programmers/Designers: please redevelop this feature to allow users to add paper sizes without Power User or Admin Rights. In a secure network these rights are not easily given out to every Dick and Jane that uses your software.

    Interesting post, and for once, something one should be able
    to work with.
    I have a similar problem:
    We're using a software distribution tool to install
    msi-packages via rpc. Trying to distribute the latest flashplayer
    works fine, but the users can't open flash-files, whether with
    firefox nor internetexplorer tried 6 and 7 with latest patches.
    I've found two possible ways to install a flashplayer plugin,
    but both require manual input, which is just not possible for
    >100 Clients. just to mention: clean registry and then install
    with admin rights or just run the installer with admin rights from
    the local machine.
    Another problem is, that our company security policy
    prohibits from using admin-rights for most installations.
    is there any workaround?

    Open the file in Preview and select "Save as..." from the File menu. Select "Reduce File Size" from the Quartz Filter menu and save. The size probably won't be reduced enough, though. You may have to split the file into several parts and mail them separately. Or upload it to a web server and send the link.

    How can I make the pdf file size smaller?

    Hi vickyb,
    Reducing the file size of PDF requires Acrobat (one way is by choosing File > Save As > Reduced Size PDF). If you don't have Acrobat, you can try it free for 30 days. See www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html for more information.

    Reducing PDF file size or Optimizing PDF is the feature that is supported only by Acrobat Pro (desktop app that is not free).
    Optimizing PDFs (Acrobat Pro)
    Free Adobe Reader products (Reader XI desktop, Reader for iOS, Reader for Android, Reader Touch for Windows 8, etc) do not offer the capability.

    The Firefox Page Zoom feature does a domain by domain level of saving the users preferred zoom level settings, there is no default Page Zoom level setting in Firefox.

  • Can't make text the right size

    HI , I'm having a frustrating problem. I'm trying to get the text announcing the levels in my game to be the right size when it's online. It works fine offline, but when I put the swf up online the text looks like it's about 2.4 instead of 24 like I am trying to get it. Here's the code in the start game method:
    public function startGame():void
    canFire = true;
    paperHeadlineIsAdded = false;
    NumOfDrops = 0;
    pastLevelTwenty = false;
    gameIsOver = false;
    speedVar = 90;
    textRemoved = true;
    origNumOfPlanes = 25;
    waitForNewLife = false;
    newLevel = false;
    bombDropSpeed = 3;
    NumOfPlanes = origNumOfPlanes;
    airplanes = [];
    bullets = [];
    bombs = [];
    // init score
    lives = 3;
    shotsLeft = 10;
    shotsHit = 0;
    showGameScore();
    levelNum = 1;
    iconArray = [];
    // create gun
    aagun = new AAGun();
    aagun.gotoAndStop(57);
    addChild(aagun);
    // create object arrays
    airplanes = new Array();
    bullets = new Array();
    bombs = new Array();
    //text formatting
    textFormat = new TextFormat();
    textFormat.font=font.fontName;
    textFormat.font = "Guadalupe";
    textFormat.size = 24;
    textFormat.align = "center";
    textFormat.color = 0xffffff;
    trace(getChildAt(numChildren-1).name);
    livesIcons();
    // listen for keyboard
    stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN,keyDownFunction);
    stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_UP,keyUpFunction);

    var siren:Sound = new Siren();
    chanD = siren.play(0,800);
    // start planes flying
    setNextPlane();
    and here's the rest of the code that puts the text up in this method:
    public function wait():void {
    if(levelNum>19){
    thisIsTheEnd();
    pastLevelTwenty = true;
    gameIsOver = true;
    newLevel = false;

    textFormat.align = "center";
    textFormat.color = 0xffffff;
    levelNum ++;
    speedVar+= 25;
    newLevelText = new TextField();
    newLevelText.width = 550;
    newLevelText.y = 110;
    newLevelText.selectable = false;
    newLevelText.defaultTextFormat = textFormat;
    newLevelText.embedFonts=true
    newLevelText.defaultTextFormat.size = 24;
    newLevelText.text = "Level "+ String(levelNum);
    waitForNewLife = true;
    addChild(newLevelText);
    textRemoved = false;
    if (gameIsOver != true){
    waitTimer = new Timer(5000,1);
    waitTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE, startNewLife);
    waitTimer.start();
    anyone have an idea why this is happening? Please let me know. Thank you.

  • Can't make pdf

    First of all, is there a way to actually talk to a tech?  While I appreciate forums, this is a definite technical issue and it probably can't be solved on a forum.  This is a crummy way of doing customer service...throwing us in the forum and not having any actual Adobe experts from the company and if there are some, then I apologize, but I wish I could have picked up the phone and called someone or spoken to someone via a chat window.
    I cannot make pdfs.  I used to be able to make them easily.  It seems to me having observed what happens with the computer that Adobe must have told Microsoft it couldn't use the pdf function any more, because it doesn't work.  It seems more and more invasive on trying to figure out how to not let any kind of pdf file be made, even though I have the File...Save As...pdf.  I used to make them easily, many of them.  Then when Microsoft went to a higher level (ugh) of Windows, it didn't work any more.  These are problems that I am experiencing.  1.  When I try to make a .pdf it turns into a Firefox icon, not a .pdf icon.  I have to have Firefox, it is the only internet browser that works for me.  Chrome, IE, Safari, and Opera won't, so telling me to uninstall Firefox won't work for me.  I did last night, and it got so bad I had to reinstall it.  2.  So I tried using a zip file creator with the Firefox icon since that was all I had to work with, I couldn't get a .pdf icon, and when I zipped the file, which it did do, and then tried to unzip it, it asked for a password.
    This Firefox deal is a big deal and it does not just affect me.  I got on the internet and tried for about 2 hours last night to solve this, and I see other people having this problem.  When attachments are sent to me any more, they come with a Firefox icon and I can't view them.  It's useless.  pdf used to be so good, and now it is trash.
    I cannot do anything technical, so don't give me an answer about getting into files and doing this or that, because it won't happen.
    What I need is a tech who can work on my computer remotely, and solve the problem, but I won' t find that in a forum.

    I am not a tech.  I do not do technical things.  If the answer is for me to
    mess with files on my computer, I cannot, nor will I, and potentially break
    my computer.  Companies who have techs should make software that works and
    does not break down for customers.  As to whose software it is, at high
    levels these corporations are connected anyway.  The only solution will be
    a new computer.  I have tried every suggestion.  The problem with
    suggestions is that when the suggestion says go to options...and then the
    next step, if the next step does not view the same way on my computer as
    someone else's computer, which it does not, I cannot follow the
    1...2...3...steps because the views are different.   I don't know why...out
    of my technical realm.  Screenshots would be better. I appreciate your
    attempt, but a geek cannot understand the difficulty a mere mortal non-geek
    has with this stuff.  I've done the Microsoft...hit this button to fix
    solution.  I've tried to follow suggestions, but, as I said, they are over
    my head and $20 compared to buying a new computer would be worth it,
    however, I do believe that companies create problems to sell services, and
    others have told me that scenario exists as well.  This computer only works
    with Firefox.  I will have to find a computer that does not require
    Firefox.  I've uninstalled Firefox and had to reinstall it because Chrome,
    IE, Safari, and Opera are so bad.  I don't care about bells and whistles on
    computers.  I would just like something simple, the simple stuff I need, to
    work.  I can save a .pdf from Word, but it turns into a Firefox icon which
    when I zip that (since I have no choice, no other option of what I can
    zip), and then later unzip it, it asks for a password to unzip and I have
    no clue what that is since I didn't create a password.  It is not solely a
    problem with my computer.  Lately, when people send me .pdf documents, I
    cannot open them.  The only way I can open them is save them to Google
    Drive and view them there,  This is tedious and time consuming.  I used to
    be able to do all this easily, and I was the same non tech person back then
    that I am today.  I'm still programmed as a non-tech person.The thing that
    changed is "someone's" programming, whether it is Microsoft, Adobe, or
    Firefox, I do not know.  Of course, trying to solve this I read many things
    and I believe I remember a lawsuit so I think they (Microsoft/Adobe) make
    it more difficult in order to try to get all the goodies (we alone have
    sovereign rights to the software) for themselves and not the competition.
    What that does is open the door to customers to leave and find another
    solution.  As for Word 97, it worked far better than Word 2010.  I get
    error messages often when I try to save.  How many times I have I sent
    error messages to Microsoft?...too many to count.  New and shinier is not
    necessarily better and I really question whether they check things out
    thoroughly before publishing new things and pushing them out to the public,
    or whether they deliberately leave doorways that can create potential
    problems in order to make it easier for the NSA.  I need a "hit the button
    to fix this solution".  I cannot do the tech stuff and what I've tried, has
    not worked.

  • PDF Page Sizes - Large format sizes missing (Acrobat Std 11)

    Hi All,
    We are an Architectural practice that has recently purchased a number of Acrobat Standard 11, licences. This is to supplement the 6 creative suites we already have.
    We have discovered however, that Standard does not have large format page sizes available such as A2, A1, A0 etc. Why? I have installed these as standalone licences on 5 other computers to date, all with the same missing information.
    The Adobe suites we have are standard and only have acrobat 9, they have these sizes, so how can a higher version have them missing?
    This problem is all over the web including these forums. The latest i could find was nearly a year ago. I am hoping Adobe has created a patch to fix this problem since.
    Attempts to add custom sizes to match the suites indicates they already exist! We can only create the sizes we need if we use different names, which is problematic for us as many of our settings look for this name to setup our printing.
    I would appreciate any assistance in fixing this problem as
    Thank you.

    I have the same problem.  There is a reasonably good workaround.  You can permanently define as many additional pages sizes as you needed including non-standard sizes.  I have one that is 36" X 90".
    Here's how  (I'm using Widows 7):
    1.  From the Start Dialog, choose Devices and Printers in the lower right.
    2.  On the Devices and Printers control panel right-click on Adobe PDF and select Printing Preferences
    3.  On the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences dialog click the "Add" button
    4.  On the Add Custom Paper Size dialog enter a name that will make sense to you like "A1" or, in my case "36 X 90"
    5.  On the Add Custom Paper Size dialog select the correct unit of measure and enter the width and height
    6.  On the Add Custom Paper Size dialog click the "Add/Modify" button
    7.  The new size is now available in the Adobe PDF Page Size drop-down.  Select it.  Click "OK"
    8.  On the Devices and Printers control panel right-click on Adobe PDF and select Printing Preferences
    9.  On the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences dialog you will see that the new size is NOT selected.  Select it again.  This time it will become the current selection.  Making a paper size the current select may not be needed for all applications.
    After step 6, if you open an application the new size should appear in the paper size drop-down from Print > Properties > Paper/Quality tab > Advanced button.  It may also appear in the drop-down of the Adobe PDF Setting tab.
    I hope this helps.

  • Print to PDF as size A2

    I am trying to create a PDF using paper size A2 using Acrobat V9.1 on Windows XP
    When I try to select paper size, either in the print properties or acrobat printing preferences (settings -> printers), I don't have any page sizes larger than A3.
    If I try to Add a paper size called A2, (Adobe PDF Page Size "Add" button) it says "Not allowed to modify system or printer defined size (A2). Only user defined paper size can be modified or deleted."
    If I try to create a new size e.g. "MyA2" with the correct sizes, after I press the "Add/Modify" button, I don't get any warnings or errors, but I still don't have the page size available.
    I've looked in the help, and I've searched the forums, but can't find anything.  How can I enable the A2 page size that already exists, or how do I create a new one to use?

    ...so today I contatcted the Adobe support, both via LiveChat and via telephone (the German support in this case).
    While the live chat operator took a while to understand what I was talking about, the guy on the phone understood it immediately.
    He said that this is a well-known bug of Adobe Acrobat, and he confirmed that right now there is no solution. He said that it might be corrected with an upcoming update... even if the problem is now more than one year old (much more).
    The only workaround available at the moment is to create the paper size that you need and name it "Azero" or "Aone".... it's for sure not a reasonable solution in our environment, finding a mixture of workstations working differently, but at least it's a possibility for single users.
    It would be also nice if any "Qualified Adobe" user could report here some "official" information about such a bug in Acrobat.
    Hoping for a fix coming up...
