Make ports on two different switches look like physically wired

I have two different switches in two different buildings and I need to make the ports look like there is a physical wire between them.
I have two disjoint networks that can talk to each other through a firewall but I need to be able to easily pass multicast traffic. I have a single PC in one building on my network (network A) and it needs to look like it is wired into the other network (network B) that resides in another building. My biggest problem is that the subnets on Network B (10.129.x.x/24) overlap with the management vlan (10.x.x.x/8) on my network. I have attempted to put all of the ports on Network A and Network B on the same vlan, however I could get no traffic to pass and I believe this is a problem with the overlap. Any help would be appreciated.

So is there a current connection between switch 1 and switch 2 and what vlan is it in or is it a trunk link.
If you want the PC to be in vlan 4 then -
1) the connection between switch 1 and switch 2 needs to be in vlan 4 at both ends or if it is a trunk link then it needs to allow vlan 4
2) the connection between switch 1 and the 6500 for both ends needs to be in vlan 4
then it should work because the PC has a direct path in vlan 4 to the 6500. The fact that there is an overlap in IP addressing doesn't matter because the PC is not routing off switch 2 but off the 6500.
Not sure how this relates to multicast traffic though. Do you mean there are multicast sources in vlan B and you need the PC to be able to receive them.

  • Port aggregation on different switches?

    Hello all :)
I got a server PC with two fast ethernet NICs (NICS do support port aggregation)
I know you can connect two 100 Mbps ports of server to two fast ethernet ports of a switch, this way you get one 200 Mbps link. If one of the ports or one of the links fail, other link keeps working.
this is a vey nice redundancy.
    My question is;
is it possible to bundle two fast ethernet ports of server to two different switches? (first ethernet port of PC to switch 1 and second ethernet port of PC to switch 2. switch 1 and switch 2 are connected each other with an uplink)
if possible, what is the CLI command for that?
thank you very much for helping.

    Hello,
AFAIK, and unless something has changed very recently, the only way to link two (or more) switches together in a single Etherchannel is in a stack configuration.
Nortel appears to have a feature called Split MultiLink Trunking, which does multichassis trunking, you might want to have a look at the document below:

  • Physical redundancy (CSS connected on two different switches)

    Hello,
Is it possible for redundancy reasons to connect a CSS to two different switches (like we do for access switches) ?
I know that one option is to configure both interfaces in the same vlan and use the spanning-tree for the redundancy. However, this will not be transparent for the end-user due to the slow convergence of the spanning-tree (uplinkfast or rapid-pvst is probably not supported).
Are there any other options ? One interface active, the other backup ?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
    Gaetan

    Gaetan,
for the CSS we suggest to be connected to only 1 switch and if the CSS detect a failure with the switch, force failover to the redundant css.
If you have ASR configured, failover will be stateful.
    Gilles.

  • Connecting two untagged VLANS from two different switches

I have a Cisco SG300-52P Small Business switch and hopefully I can explain well what's going on. We have a Juniper EX4200 L3 switch that has a bunch of our corporate VLANs (they are routed VLANs) and that allows communication between all of our corporate networks. We have several other L2 Netgear, HP Procurve, etc... on which we have split the ports down the middle and divided them into two broadcast domains by setting them as untagged VLANs. One cable goes from each of the different VLANs on the L2 switches into different VLANs on the L3 switch. As long as STP is disabled this seems to work fine. However, we tried this same scenario on this Cisco Small Business switch and only one of the two untagged VLANs on the Cisco will pass traffic at a time. I believe that whenever the VLAN that is on the default (VLAN 1) is plugged in, the other (the one we created) shuts down but when VLAN 1 is unplugged, the other VLAN immediately starts to work. What seems weird is that the Cisco seems to learn the Juniper's MAC on the VLAN that doesn't work and the Juniper learns the MAC on the one that does work. In other words, the Juniper does not learn the Cisco's MAC on both of the VLANs that the Cisco is plugged into, as it does with the other L2 switches that we have, and the Cisco does not learn the MACs of the Juniper on both of its VLANs. I hope this is making sense and please let me know if there is any way I can further clarify. I'm sure I'm just doing something dumb that I'm overlooking so feel free to slap me in the face. :-)
Thank you in advance for your time!

It sounds like there is a layer 2 loop in your network if spanning tree is shutting down the ports.  You should be able to do a show spanning-tree on the switch, or look in spanning tree rstp interface status.
are there any other interconnects between devices?  Like un-managed hubs, WAPs with bridging, virtual servers with multiple NIC cards?
Show spanning tree on each device might show what is going on, or at least tell you which ports are root ports, which ones are forwarding or blocking.  Best practice is to configure your spanning tree if you have more than 1 or 2 switches.
A detail topology showing port numbers, (sanitized) IP addresses, vlans and purpose, trunks with what vlans are tagged, and  untagged .
from your description,  your network looks like
    multiple vlans - layer 3 Juniper swtich - netgearS1 vlan`1 --procurveS2 vlan 1 -- ciscoS3 vlan1
                                                           \-- netgearS1 vlan2 - - procurveS2 vlan --  ciscoS3 vlan 2
I'm having trouble visiualizing <<One cable goes from each of the different VLANs on the L2 switches into different VLANs on the L3 switch. >>
are the cables for vlan 1 going to vlan 1 or are the cables for vlan1 going to a different vlan on the other switch?
Can you reduce the complexity and number of interconnects by using trunking?
What are the IPs and default gateway of all devices, L3 switch?
These switches do STP, RSTP and multiple spanning tree, but will not do per vlan spanning tree.  so there may be some configuration required on all switches to get the correct root bridge (the Juniper I assume)

  • Best way to make a logo that doesn't look like crap on big screens/phones?

I am working on creating a simple text logo that fits in a 110x300 pixel space for a website. The thing is, at this small resolution, it looks pretty crappy using Photoshop. So, I tried Illustrator because I believe you can save vectors with it (I'm new to all this). From what I know, vectors don't lose quality when zoomed in (or on big screens). However, I have no clue what I'm doing. I tried to "save for web" a logo as a png 24, and it still looks like crap. Am I doing something wrong, or is it just not possible to save a high quality image at that size?

So, there is no way to save a vector image for a website?
SVG. Flash. HTML5 canvas objects (JavaScript).
That was what SVG was really made for, but it never found widespread use.
    That's a pretty broad-based (and misleading) dismissal.
Use of SVG is increasing, not declining, and practically all current browsers now support it. So with such a statement, you would need to quantify "widespread". Of course SVG (like Flash and canvas) is and probably always will be less common than raster formats, but that's always been true of vector-based graphics in general, even in print. Less "widespread" use of something superior is an advantage to those who employ it. Sites which employ it effectively can be more engaging and dynamic than the far more "widespread" ones which don't. That's the whole point.
Fonts are also vector-based graphics and are certainly pretty "widespread" in use on the web. (Consider the potential of this in the light of things like font embedding and GoogleFonts.)
From what I know, vectors don't lose quality when zoomed in (or on big screens).
Stallone, your question is really more a matter of the platforms / browsers you are targeting. You have to be aware of what kind of zooming you are talking about and what is happening on what you're referring to as "big screens."
For example, you can easily launch Inkscape, create an SVG graphic consisting entirely of vector paths, and include it in a static web page. It will be displayed and rasterized on-the-fly by the local machine, as vector graphics are intended to do. But now, who or what is going to "zoom" it? Are you talking about mere screen "magnification" by the sight impaired in which the whole page is zoomed? Are you talking about pinch zooming on mobile devices in which the whole page is zoomed? Are you talking about projecting on the conference room screen in which nothing is actually zoomed (re-rasterized) at all?
Everything that anybody views on a computer monitor is a raster image, because the monitor itself is a raster imaging device. That's even true of vector paths you draw and view in programs like Illustrator. Vector-based graphics get re-rasterized on the fly--so long as the system in which they are being printed/viewed is capable of supporting that. The question boils down to when the rasterization occurs and what is doing the zooming.
Historically, web browsers don't do that. The "intelligence" (programming) involved in rasterizing vector paths on the fly has to be effectively "embedded" in the graphic or in an add-on program (browser plug in) which performs the re-rasterization locally on the viewer's machine. That's why Flash requires a plug-in and SVG has to be viewed in a browser that understands the XML upon which it's based (which most current browsers nowadays do) and HTML5 Canvas has to viewed in browsers which can run its JavaScript-like programming (which is still developing).
All this is constantly changing as mobile devices and platforms and ebooks proliferate, and all this is why designing for the web always entails some amount of experimentation on the platform(s) for which you are developing.
It's a big subject; not something you can get a crash course on in a forum like this.

    Hi everybody,
I'm sorry about my poor english... I'm French (but it is not contagious)

    My network :

    - I can't force speed/duplex on GLC-FE-100LX (actually a-half a-100)

    Thank you Leo,
It doesn't work, but I found an solution !
    A strange solution...
I forced the C2960G-24TC-L to work with SFP :
    media-type sfp
When I do that, I have the possibility to force the duplex (but not the speed... ok why not... ) :
    duplex full
It is not very clean but my link is up and full-100 both sides.
    Not very clean because :
C2960 side = force duplex, auto speed
SF200 side = auto duplex, auto speed
No errors... the link is clean.
Anyone known the reason or a better solution ?

  • How do I make an animated slide show that looks like pages of a scrapbook turning?

I am learning CS6 to make a website for the summer camp I run.  On the main page I want a scrapbook that will open and show pictures of the kids having fun... how can I do this??

Take a look at FlippingBook, which is an extremely good application. This is also not Flash based so works in all devices.
    http://flippingbook.com
You would need to create it as a standalone page and then add an iFrame to the page you want it displayed on to have it inside your web page template.
An easier way and maybe more versatile would be to just have a gallery on your page and animate it with CSS3. This is an example.

  • How to make a rasterized word look like it was written with dirt?

Im trying to make an image where this word looks like it is written in dirt on the sidewalk.  Iv' already taken a pile of dirt and created a clip mask out of it but it doesnt look natural enough.  How do I do this so it looks realistic? And this is a graphic not font and I am using photoshop cs6. Thank you.

I'll just add a little footnote to the above, while I'm thinking about it.  One problem with layer styles - especially complex ones like Bevel & Emboss, is that you have limited control of the different aspects of the effect.  I didn't use Bevel & Emboss in the above example because the highlights were too strong, and made it look wrong.
A way round this is to right click the effect and choose 'Create layers'.  This breaks up the effect into one or more layers, so you can reduce, say, the highlight without effecting the shadow.
I think if I was trying to do a stand out job, I'd use a finer font, so it looked like it had been drawn with a stick, and I'd use a combination of Bevel and Emboss layer style to get the depth, but I'd also use JJ's idea of a displacement map clipped to the text layer, to roughen the edges realistically, and add texture to the bottom of the indented text.
An alternative is to find a suitable texture, and save it as a Pattern.  That would make it available to use as a 'Texture' in the Bevel Emboss sub options. The beauty of this is that the texture works very much like a Displacement map with depth and lighting effects.  In fact, I think that might be the easiest way to go about it.

  • Ethernet address on two trunked switches at the same time

I have two access layer switches sharing a dot1q trunk ( a port channel with four members), and an HP blade server with one connection (a port channel with two members) into each..  The blade server's connections into each switch is also a dot1q trunk tagging just one vlan.  In each connection from the blade server to each switch the mac addresses look very much alike.  I determine this by writing a script to log into both switches at once and run the "show mac add int" command on each port channel to the blade server.  In tcpdumps the commands are sent typically about .1 - .4 seconds apart on average.
So if the "show mac addr int" command is being run .1 - .4 seconds apart on each switch and have a number of mac addresses in common, would this indicate that these ethernet addresses are flapping in a way that might cause interruptions in packet delivery?  Some are experiencing missed pings.  No VPCs are used in this configuration -  just a pair of either 6509 or 7018 switches connected via a dot1q port channel.

It sounds to me like what you are trying to achieve is network teaming on the HP Blade Server whereby you can have a connection to two different switches.
Natively something like this would cause problems because both switchports (or portchannels) would see the same L2 Address which would then confuse upstream switches as they would not know where to forward frames to. I believe the HP servers may allow this type of setup but it requires a specific config on the teaming element to prevent a single MAC address being shown on two different ports.
Have a read of the whitepaper below:

  • GBICS show up differently on different switches

Has anyone ever seen the exact same GBICs show up differently on a show interface status command on two different switches? I have a 4507 on one end of the link and a 3750 on the other end of the link. A show interface status on the 4507 indicates that a 1000baseLX is installed in the port. A show interface status on the 3750 is showing that a 1000baseLH SFP is installed on the port, but they are the exact same GBICs. It is throwing me off because I am having UDLD issues so I am trying to find a problem with the fiber or GBICs.

I'm curious, have you tried to swap the GBICs between the devices and see if the description follows the device?
The "LX" designation was for the original 5km reach specified standard and the "LX/LH" is for the 10km reach version.  It might be possible that one of the GBICs is the old standard.
Are you operating this link over MMF (OM-?) or SMF and what is its distance?

  • Same iTunes Account on Two Different Computers

Is there any way for someone to create an iTunes that allows a person to access the same iTunes account on two different computers? Like if my mom wanted the same songs on her computer as the ones on my dad's computer, but she doesn't want to go through the trouble of using a flash drive. They both want to have access to the same account on two different computers.

if the computer cannot be turned on, one option would be to remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure that can be connected to the working computer.

  • Diversity and trying to conver two different areas

So the whole purpose of diversity is to provide/improve coverage in a same area.  Basically two antennas placed with a reasonable distance from each other and the concept is that one antenna might receive a better signal than other and then both signals can be combined to get a single stream.  End result better communication.
Now something I have noticed that people are doing is taking the two antennas and putting them like 25 to 50 feet apart with diversity enabled trying to cover two different areas.  At times two different rooms so like one antenna is in one room and second one is in another room with a concrete wall between them.  Apparently they are saying that it is working for them.  I'm trying to understand the logic behind that how something like that wouldn't cause issues unless they have clients only on one side?

I've seen set-ups like this before and people at the site can (and will) say that it's "working".
Until I get a wireless sniffer out or do some scanning, it seldom works.  They will say that it's working purely for political (don't want to get themselves into trouble) and/or financial (they can't afford to put two APs) or both.
This may work (somewhat) in 802.11a/b/g but stick 802.11n/ac and I'm certain it won't work.  When I mean it won't work, I mean you won't see the full benefit of connection speeds of >155 Mbps.

  • IDoc sent by different party looks different

    Hi,
We have a scenario where we receive IDocs from different party.
If I check in SXI_MONITOR,the structure of inbound message(IDoc) looks different:
It looks like a normal file with XML tags, without any colours and expand/collapse structure like we have in Internet Explorer .
It has all the XML tags in one single line without CR/LF.
I hope I am able to explain it in a proper way.
Can anybody please let me know what is difference in this IDoc XML?
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,

    Hi Ravi,
I don't have access to their system,so I can't check this IDoc in their system.
But I checked the IDoc XML for the IDoc created by this IDoc in our system by running the Function Module and it looks fine even though it is same in Payload of Message Mapping response in SXI_MONITOR.
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
