Make screen (physically) brighter

hi, i have noticed that my toshiba satellite (2007) screen is very dim compared to say an apple compouter or macbook.. i have already increased brightness all the way through the settings, and increased brightness & gamma through the chip settings, but it's still maybe only half as bright as other laptops i see
is there any way to physically increase brightness, through the power/hardware? for example, switching the resistor.. or some kind of power booster for the particular circuit that controls the screen's brightness?
thanks!

Nope. Not without costing more than a replacement laptop would cost.

  • Screen turns bright yellow & green curser turns into a large yellow square.

When I play any type of 3d game, such as world of warcraft my screen turns bright yellow and green. The mouse cursor turns into a large yellow square. Then it will make squiggly patterns across the screen in these colors, Almost like a argyle pattern. The only way to fix this is force quit the program (or if I can see the game still) I have to make it non-full screen. Iam thinking it might be a video card error, but iam not sure. Anyone experience this before?
    Steve.

Are you running your monitor at its native resolution? If changing the resolution of the game solves the problem as I take it from your sentence quoted here:
"The only way to fix this is force quit the program (or if I can see the game still) I have to make it non-full screen"
Then you probably should try changing the resolution of the screen before playing the game. Most games will do this automatically but if the ones you are playing do not then you may need to search for updates to them. Very few games are designed to run in wide screen mode, but generally in more traditional resolutions such as 640 x 480 or some other resolution with the same relationship between width and height.
This is my best guess anyway. Hope you get the problem solved.

  • GP70 screen too bright

Hi, I just bought a GP70 2PE with Core i7 and so far I quite like it. I installed Windows 7 x64 instead of the default Windows 8.
However, I have one problem with it - the screen is very bright - even on the lowest setting, the screen is brighter than my old laptop (a 9 year old Acer 5020) on the highest setting. While a bright screen will be great for outdoors use (or in other brightly lit places), using the laptop in a dark place hurts my eyes (while the old laptop and the CRT monitor of my main PC do not).
Opening the graphics control panel and setting brightness.contrast to minimum helps a bit but makes the image look bad. Is thee a way to reduce the backlight brightness (without opening the laptop and modding the backlight circuit, which I could do, but do not want to lose the warranty)?

I would like to thank Lenn and Dennis for your suggestions, all of which I have now tried. I've taken so long to respond because I wanted to wait 24 hours - and another night - to see if one is better than another. Changing the screen profile made a very small difference, and at first Brightness seemed to do a better job, but the overall winner in terms of flexibility is undoubtedly Shades, which I'm using right now.
    Thanks again, both of you!

I don't know exactly what the issue is, but I think I do. Are you talking about what happens when you start up your MBP, full brightness, with power cable in - and when you're using battery only, the brightness dims? If so, this is a feature designed to make sure your monitor is bright enough while using batteries - but not so bright as to cause an undue drain on power.
I don't know about a cure to this issue, if indeed this is what you're talking about.

Go to Settings>General Wallpaper and Brightness and turn off Auto Brightness.
    Next:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • Is The 24" iMac Screen Too Bright For Longevity ?

I have just been in an Apple Store testing both the 20" and 24".
I had heard that the 24" screen was brighter but assumed that, like so many claims, it would only be a marginal difference.
I was amazed to see that it was considerably brighter, making the 20" look extremely dull by comparison.
I checked and found that both machines were on maximum brightness. Even set to minimum, the 24" seemed brighter.
I don't know about LCDs but with "normal" electric bulbs, over-running them can give a brilliant but brief life.
Are these new monitors naturally bright or are they being over-run and likely to burn out just after the warranty expires?
    Ian.

I realise we are dealing with a different technology.
Does that mean that the brightness will have no detrimental effect on longevity?

  • How do I make screen arrangement permanent?

How do I make screen arrangement permanent?  I set it in system preferences -> arrangement tab, but it switches back after a reboot.  I have 3 external monitors.  One being driven by the DVI port and the other two by two USB display adapters (Display Link with latest drivers installed).  I have the DVI monitor in the middle and the two USB monitors on both sides.

Here is a reply I posted about Dual Monitor problems on another thread, whereby Mountain Lion forgets the arrangment of the monitors, I wonder if a similar approach may work with your particular case?
Possible Solution.... needs testing, but initial trial has been successful. Does this work for anyone else?
There are two .plist files I have identified which record the screen arrangement:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist     (top level library, not user library)
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.FE******-****-****-****-**********2E.plist
(user library, where *** are unique code) I think the first drives the system arrangment (e.g., login window at startup etc), and the second is a user's own setup.
I modified the screen and menu arrangement through System Preferences, which modified file (1).
Using a text editor I copied and pasted everything into a new blank document and saved as com.apple.windowserver.plistthen duplicated the file and named it as per file (2). *even though there were some minor differences.
I backed up and deleted the windowserver plists from both the system and user preference (ByHost) folders, including the lockfiles.
Moved my new documents into their respective folders and rebooted... windows appeared where they were supposed to. (I should mention that I moved the screen and menu arrangement back to the 'wrong' way first, which showed me that the files had indeed altered the arrangement).
The question is - will this now hold?
Perhaps locking the file / changing the permissions to prevent the system updating it might help IF the problem reoccurs?

How do you make screen shots with Mac OS 10.6?

Press the Shift, Command, and 3 keys to capture the whole screen.
Press the Shift, Command, and 4 keys to capture a draggable part of the screen, or follow it with the spacebar to capture a window.
Open the PNG on the desktop. Alternatively, combine either of the above with the Control key to put the screenshot onto the clipboard instead of the desktop.

  • My screen reduces brightness while using apple tv, any suggestions?

My screen reduces brightness while using my apple tv - any suggestions?

Does it just look darker all the time or does the brightness change over time?
If it just looks darker, check Settings>Video and if set to RGB Low try RGB High or YCrCb.
I was watching a digital copy of final Harry Potter last night that came bundled with the Blu Ray - could not believe how dark the film was - I used to routinely use RGB Low on AppleTV1, and such settings options have only just appeared on AppleTV2.  I could see hardly any shadow detail on RGB Low, much improved on RGB High.

  • How to make screen resolution independent in BDC

How to make screen resolution independent in BDC

    hi
    good
You need to use the CTU_PARAM structure alon with the call transaction statment.
    **Sturcture of CTU_PARAM
    **DISMODE : Display mode (like the MODE addition 'A' , 'E', 'N')
**UPDMODE: Update mode (like the UPDATE addition 'S', 'A')
**DEFSIZE : Use default window size (Here we are handling those transaction by giving default window size)
**RACOMMIT: Do not end transaction at COMMIT WORK
**NOBINPT : No batch input mode (that is, SY-BINPT = SPACE)
**NOBIEND : No batch input mode after the end of BDC data.
*The components DEFSIZE , RACOMMIT, NOBINPT, and NOBIEND always take the following values:
    'X' Yes
DATA : L_OPTION TYPE CTU_PARAMS, "Parameter string for runtime of CALL TRANSACTION
    L_SUBRC TYPE SYSUBRC.
    L_OPTION-DEFSIZE = 'X'.
    L_OPTION-DISMODE = P_MODE.
    L_OPTION-UPDMODE = 'S'.
CALL TRANSACTION 'FK01' "FK01-Vendor master creation

  • How to make a physical standby database in the read_only state in 11g?

In 10g, we can make a physical standby database in the read_only state. But in 11g, no a read_only state for a physical standby database. How to make a physical standby database in the read_only state in 11g?

    Hi
read-only mode (for 11g physical standby)
A mode in which a database can be opened that allows queries, but disallows modifications.
A physical standby database can be opened read-only so that queries may be performed. If a license for the Oracle Active Data Guard option has been purchased, a physical satndby database can be open while redo apply is active. This capability is known as Real-time Query.

  • How to make a physical copy of database when using ASM

I used to make a physical copy of production database
every night to create test environment. I have
simply physically copied files, recreated control file,
    ... to create it.
But on 10g I want to use ASM, is there some way
to do physical copy of the database similar way?

You can not directly to duplicate a regular database that does not use ASM into new one that does not use ASM. The problem with ASM is that you can not see the files directly at the disk level.
If you use RMAN you could use the command duplicate and all would be easier.

  • Shortcut "Z" not working, screen  momentary brighter

    Hello,
i have a Macbook Pro Retina with hopefully the latest Garage Band (10 or 11?).
Anyway I have a problem with the keyboard shortcuts. For example if I press "Z"
to jump to the beginning of the tracks nothing happens but the screen gets brighter
    for a short time..
I have noticed this behavior on several shortcuts.
Anybody an idea what's the problem?
    THX and best regards, Hubert

    Hubert,
to see your GarageBand version, use the menu command "GarageBand > About GarageBand".
If it is showing Version 10.0.2, you are indeed having the newest GarageBand version.
Then hit the "return" key to go to the beginning of a track.
The list of keyboard shortcuts is here:
    http://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.0/#gbnd715f33a0
Many shortcuts from the older GarageBand '11 no longer work, and not all keys are documented.
    -- Léonie
For example if I press "Z"
to jump to the beginning of the tracks nothing happens but the screen gets brighter
    for a short time..
Added - the blinking, brighter screen is the error message for an undefined keyboard shortcut.
