Make some files invisible to others

I have 2 mac pros that I connect together, and log in to the first mac using the second, using a diffferent id.
Is there a way to make some files hidden to user2, but not user1, and the opposite,: hidden to user1, and visible to user 2?
Or is this too complicated ?
Thanks in advance

no, there is no way to do that. what you can do is change permissions on some files/folders so that they are accessible from account 1 but not account 2. that's not the same as hidden but will accomplish the same thing. to change permissions on something select it in finder and enter command+i. unlock the lock at the bottom with your admin password and change permissions as you like it. but remember that any admin user can change permissions again so if both users are admin this is no protection.

  • How to make some nodes invisible?

I set up a xml tree with JTree. Now I want to make some nodes invisible like the nodes which the name of the node is "datatype",how can I ?Thank you.

I don't know if the nodes can be made invisible. But if you make cell renderer then you can evaluate the value before displaying it. If value is like 'datatype', you display (cell renderer displays) nothing as value in the cell.

  • Make hidden files invisible again

Recently I had remote support (Teamviewer) from a software company, and as a result all the previously hidden files are visible (grey), and are cluttering up my file folders. I no longer wish to deal with that company. Can someone tell me the Terminal command line that makes those hidden files invisible again?
    Thanks,
    Klaus

Open the Terminal and type the following:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles 0
After doing this, log out and then log back in, or otherwise quit and relaunch the Finder.

  • How can I make my wifi invisible to others

    Hi,
i would like to know how to make my wifi connection invisible to others.
i Have a time machine with a guest network.
    many thanks in advance.

i would like to know how to make my wifi connection invisible to others
This is not really possible, since there are any number of free utilities on the Internet that will reveal a "hidden" network in seconds. Anyone who wants to see your network will be able to do so very quickly and easily.
iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad often have difficulty connecting to a "hidden" network as well.
If you still want to do this......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next page
Click the Wireless Options button near the bottom of the page
Enter a check mark in the box next to Create hidden network
    Click Save
Click Update at the lower right of the window and allow a minute for the Time Capsule to restart

  • Make a file invisible or hidden

I have some extremely important data that I wish to secure as well a possible. I have it encrypted three times using different methods and passwords for maximum security. Just to top things off I would like to make it invisible or hidden (not sure of proper term). I know that this is very easy to get around but it may make the data slightly harder to find to someone who might not be deliberately searching for it.
Thanks to anyone who can help,
    Macguy3000
P.S. Please don't suggest that I put it on an external storage device as it is constantly edited and must remain on my MBP internal HD.

I will share with you my own method, but please DO NOT VEER FROM THIS PATH (at your own risk...)
    1. In your Administration Account, launch Utilities > NetInfo Manager; in the Security menu choose Authenticate (i.e. type your password!), then Enable Root User (if you never did this before you will need to set up a Root User password).
    2. Logout of all accounts and login to the Root Account. DO NOT DO ANYTHING HERE EXCEPT WHAT I AM ABOUT TO ADVISE. Navigate to the (well-encrypted) file(s)/folder(s) you want to hide and drag them from their present location into (e.g.) the Documents folder in the Root Account.
    3. Logout of the root Account, login to your Administration Account, relaunch NetInfo Manager > Security, and choose Disable Root Account. Voilà - your files are hidden from view, especially anyone who steals your computer and goes looking (though enabling Open Firmware Password will also help as all your efforts will come to naught if someone can access your HD via OS 9).
(I am well aware that all techies and geeks will say "but you could have done all that using sudo...". Accepted - but I am neither a techie nor a geek and this method works for me!)

  • CD is double burned.  Recognizes some files on Mac, others on Windows.

I just came across this today. Apparently, I picked up a CD that was burned some time ago on a Mac and burned a new set of songs to it on a Windows PC (running XP) as an audio CD.
Checked it out in the car and the Windows files play on the CD player. Brought it into work to listen to (it was a bunch of Christmas music) and it has a totally different playlist on it and even has a disk name.
I cannot find the Windows files anywhere on the disk when it's in the Mac. We popped it into a Windows PC and it doesn't see the Mac files but I have my Christmas music back.
How could this have double burned and how do I access the Windows files on the mac and vice versa? (and how do I avoid doing this again???)

That's a strange one. The only thing I can think of that might produce that kind of effect is described in the following troubleshooting document:
[iTunes: Backup DVDs from my Mac don't work on my Windows PC|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1511]

  • Some files uploaded to "Other" category when they ...

I have just installed BT Cloud for the first time so am still learning.
I only wanted one specific folder uploaded which on my local desktop PC is a sub-folder under Documents in Windows 7.
I therefore deselected all the other categories that I did not want uploaded to The Cloud.
All the files in this folder were PDF documents and all went well with the upload except some were allocated to the "Other" folder in The Cloud storage. The rest were correctly assigned to "Documents" folder in The Cloud storage.
Why would this happen and how do I move the files that have wrongly been stored in "Other" to join the rest in "Documents" within The Cloud storage.
As I say all the files I was uploading ended in .PDF
I am able to open and display correctly the ones that have been assigned to "Other" in The Cloud.
I am rather confused and would appreciate any help.
    Thank you.

Thought it might be a one off error so deleted all the uploaded files in the cloud and emptied trash.
Removed from settings the entry for the one and only specific folder I wanted uploading to The Cloud.
Signed out and back in again and added the specific folder again in settings. Files uplaoded but again some put correctly in "Documents" and some incorrectly in "Other".
Each file download initially indicates that it is a document but it is only when the download for the file reaches 100% that it suddenly changes the category to "Other" and thus puts it in the "Other" folder.
All files are PDF and end in .PDF
I cant see any difference between the files that end up in each destination folder and no files are any bigger than 40MB.
Any help would be much appreciated.
The BT Cloud file classification is such that it only recognises files by their extension, eg. .doc, xls, jpg, ...etc.
A .pdf file has no specific classification, so BT Cloud sees it as "other", in the same way as it would see a .zip file.
The way around this, for your own file organising, would be to "Create a Collection". This would narrow down a quick search for an individual file from a large number of files, (if you have uploaded many files).
As far as I know, "Create a Collection" does'nt involve uploading masses of data, as it's just creating a folder structure from files you have uploaded.......

  • Re: Automatically make shared files writable for others

    Ready for consideration.

    Hi,
    Now I understand your concern.
I opened your link and the document was opened on Word Online, and I don't know how to download the document directly when opening the link. Since we mainly discuss Office Client questions in this current forum, I thought it was an OneDrive for Business
client issue. Now I know this issue is about how you want the share link to work from OneDrive for Business in Office 365, to get the more appropriate support, I suggest you post the question in Office 365 Community Forum:

  • Some files not previewing in Bridge CS4, only showing icons

This is not new but I finally got to the point where I'm bothered enough to write. I'm browsing folders that have Illustrator, Photoshop, and .tif files, and some files preview, and some just show the icon of the file type. What needs to happen for me to be able to preview ALL the files in the folder I'm browsing? b.t.w., it's not just this folder - it's happened before with other folders and there seems to be no sense to it - some folders I browse everything shows up, others only some files preview and others are as described above. Thanks for any advice...

I would go to tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder.  Let the thumbs rebuild and see how it acts.  It is best not to start a new action until the spinning wheel in lower right corner stops to indicate it is finished.

I am unable to install 10.5.4 on my Intel iMac. I have rebooted multiple times, disconnected all external drives including my printer and tried the installer with no success. I have not found anything pointing to why on the forums. Any assistance would be helpful.

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • How do i transfer some files and applications to and make my ssd a bootable drive

I have a mbp 2009.  i'm using the owc data doubler - installing 250gb ssd and keeping my 250 HDD.  I want to transfer some apps and files from the HDD to the SSD and make the SSD the bootable drive.  I'm not too familiar with teh inner-workings, so i'd appreciate a step-by-step instruction

First - if you want to have the SSD as your boot drive, put it in your hard drive bay and put your hard drive in the optical bay. MacBook Pros 'expect' the boot drive to be in the main bay - not the secondary bay.
After you've made the swap, hold down the option key whilst booting and select your hard drive to start up. Once you've booted, use Disk Utility to format the SSD ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)") with a single GUID partition. Now you'll be ready to start moving things around.
The best thing you can do - since the HD and the SSD are the same size - is simply to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your 'old' drive to the SSD. Then you can boot from the SSD, erase (reformat) your hard drive and then move any files on the SSD that you want on your HD. If I were you, I would try to keep most of your music, photos & other docs on the HD and your applications, etc., on the SSD. DO NOT just move your entire user directory to the HD as there are likely some files that are expected to be found in your user folder (the user Library, etc.).
    Easy enough?

A MacBook will use Time Machine to make local backups so that when connected to an external drive it will backup a lot faster.
to disable this, you must use a command under terminal.
to locate terminal, do a search for it under spotlight (the magnifying glass on the top right corner), should be the first hit.
once under terminal, type the following text exactly:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
    hit enter.
you will be asked to input your password, if you do not have a password, you will have to create one before performing this command. after entering your password, hit enter again and close terminal.
in a few minutes the space taken up by time machine should be cleared.

  • In snow leopard, how make files "invisible"?

in snow leopard, how make files "invisible"?

You can make files or folders invisible from the Terminal. Enter the following command:
    chflags hidden
Don't press enter yet. Put a space after the the word hidden and then drag and drop the item you want to hide into the Terminal window. Now press enter. The item will disappear from view.
You'd better copy that path down though, because if you want to unhide it, you need to know the full path and file or folder name.
As a test, I did one as:
    chflags hidden /Users/myaccount/Desktop/test.tif
This of course is a file named test.tif sitting on the desktop of my user account. Upon hitting enter, it disappeared. To get it back, you unhide it:
    chflags nohidden /Users/myaccount/Desktop/test.tif
The item will reappear. You can see where it would be very important to have that entire path written down. If you forget the name or where it is, you'll be lucky to find it by guessing. It's either that, or you'll have to use the trick to show hidden and system files. Then you'll be able to see the hidden item you're dragging and dropping item into Terminal to unhide it.
