Make startup manager load by default on startup (rather than option key)

I have a macbook pro 13' (late 2010 version) i am running Lion and i have windows 7 proffesional using boot camp.
When i boot up my mac it loads Lion by default.
I understand that to switch between the two i have to hold the option key on startup, i am then prompted for my password, and after entering it i get to the startup manager which displays the startup disks available.
I would like to know if there is a way of getting my mac to run the startup manager (with password) by default when i boot it, rather than choose one of the installed os.

No. However, you can install a third-party bootloader if you're willing to try it: rEFIt.
If you do this then you need to know that Boot Camp Assistant will no longer be able to manage the Windows partition.

You will need to copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

The startup manager loads but cannot display, all i get is a black screen and a message saying No signal

I have a mac mini that was just assigned to me to set up for my team at work to use when they are helping customers who have a mac. We need to have OS 10.8 and 10.9 on separate partitions, which I have set up. However when I launch the startup manager (holding option during startup) i get a blank screen and a message saying No Signal. I know the Startup manager has loaded because I can use the arrows to navigate blindly and I can successfully load either partition. I believe that it is a resolution issue. The monitor I have available can only display in 1440X1080 at 75 hz and I think that the startup manager must be loading at a higher resolution than this.
I have tried clearing P-ram and have searched ceaselessly to find someone who has had this same issue and no one else seems to have it.

I think the Startup screen is 800*600 normally, can you set the Startup partition in Sys Prefs>Startup Disk?

How to make web shortcuts use icon provided by website rather than default

I'm a new Mac user, and I find it hard to use web shortcuts on my desktop and dock, because when I drag them from my browser to there, they all get the at sign on a spring icon, rather than the default icon provided by the website, which shows up next to the URL in the browser. Is there some setting that will allow it to use and keep that icon when I drag shortcuts?

If you are using one of Lightroom's "date-based" folder templates, then the folders are created in accordance with the image capture date, not the date that you happen to import it. That's because you're opening text documents, so it thinks you want the text tool. Try a jpg.
While it won't default to move, it won't default to text either. Move is only a ⌘-1.

With AIR 2.7, there is no way to switch between device speaker and phone earpiece on Android and iOS. All sounds, by default, play through device speaker only.
The link mentioned by Colin just presents a way to enable phone receiver on iOS. However thats a bug and will be rectified in future releases. So I will not encourage you to use that.

Why did TEST PILOT load to 3.6.15 rather than 4.0???

I just loaded the Test Pilot add-on. I don't remember which version of Firefox I was running when I loaded it. I use both because 4.o won't work on all sites without IETAB. I loaded on 3.6.15 and I'd like to load it to 4.o. How???

An extension is always installed in the profile folder that is being used while installing that extension.
You should avoid using the same Firefox profile with different Firefox versions.
If you you that profile with both versions then create a new profile exclusively for the Firefox 4 version and create a desktop shortcut with -P "profile" appended to the target to launch that profile.

Force network browser to default to AFP rather than SMB?

Hi,
I'm having an intermittent problem with the network browser. When I open it, I see a list of all the computers on my network (Mac and PC). But sometimes when I connect to other macs on the network, the protocol defaults to SMB.
What I want to happen is this:
- When I connect to a PC, I want to use Samba
- When I connect to another Mac, I want to use AFP
The network browser just shows a list of aliases to all the computers on the network and presumably picks the appropriate protocol itself when you try to connect to one of them. The trouble is, sometimes I'll be trying to connect to another Mac and it will ask me to authenticate for SMB. At first I thought the problem was confined only to my mac, but some of the others on the network are experiencing the same thing.
So really, I want the Network browser to connect using AFP by default and if a particular computer doesn't use AFP, then use Samba instead. Right now, I am connecting manually using command K in Finder and typing in the IP address - which is a bit of a pain.
Any help you guys could offer would be very much appreciated

Except occasionally when the status of computers on the network change and the browser hasn't updated, you usually can expect a reliable pattern for how to connect to other computers.
The Network browser in a Finder window will group computers according to Windows workgroups, Appletalk zones and AFP Bonjour. If all AppleTalk advertisements are in the default zone, they get grouped with Bonjour AFP advertisements in the "My Network" category. Selecting a computer in "My Network" should always result in an AFP-over-TCP/IP connection (from Tiger).
Alternately, to force the issue, you can use the "Go to server..." command (CMD-K) and enter the address of the computer. If you prefix the address with "smb://" it will use SMB, if you prefix it with "afp://" it will use AFP. With no prefix, it will use AFP (it will not fail-over to SMB or any other protocol).
This is all explained in Finder help and in various documents on Apple's support site.

Is it possible to make the ipad remain on an app screen rather than reverting to the home screen?

We have a credit card app on our Ipad2 that we want to remain available for use 24/7; the ipad is encased in a security holder and the 'home' button is not accessible. Therefore, we want the card app to remain as the only thing visible. Unfortunately, the ipad keeps timing out to the home screen which makes all other apps available to everyone. Short of removing all other icons, is there a way to make it stay within the credit card app?

Apps don't time out. There is no specific time interval for app usage. If its going back to the home screen either the home button is being pressed (which you said is not possible) or the App is crashing.
In which case its something for the developer to look into.
You can find crash reports under Settings->General->About->Diagnostics and Usage->Diagnostic and Usage Data.
Other than that, I'm not certain Guided Access will relaunch the App in the event that it crashes, but you may want to look into it.

How to make .wmv files play in QuickTime Player 7 rather than 10

I have just about had it with QuickTime Player 10 in the Applications folder
and would rather use QuickTime Player 7 in the Utilities folder to play .wmv files.
When I double click on a .wmv file, it opens in QuickTime Player 10 with the
lame floating thing that blocks the view. Where and how can set 10.6.2 to use
QuickTime Player 7 rather than QuickTime Player 10?
