Make the Crop Tool in PSE5 snap to document bounds

Is there a way to make the crop tool in PSE5 snap to the document bounds (which was the default behaviour in V2 and v3)?
The grid option doesn't work, because the bottom of the image may not align to a grid line. The trick of starting outside the image, drawing past that corner and then holding CTRL to constrain the opposite edge works, but only if you're cropping to two edges of the image, and loses the snap if you try and adjust anything.
Is there any equivalent of the "snap to document bounds" of the earlier versions?
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I believe I know exactly what you mean. My workaround is to make the whole photo smaller than the window I am working in (leave an inch of grey around the edges, for example). Then I click the crop tool about half-an-inch outside one corner and drag to half-an-inch (or so) beyond the opposite corner. You will then have your full picture selected right on the edges. Maybe that could work for you.

  • How do I make the crop tool work?

Okay, The image is in adjustment view. It has a white border around it. I checked the box that says crop on it. I hover the cursor over the corners. The cursor does not change to crop tool. When I press on the crop icon it beeps a reject sound. Not sure how to phrase that. New to Aperture. Help

There is no "adjustment view" in Aperture.
What happens if you double-click the image with the selection box around it?  That should take you from the Browser to the Viewer.  Then, in the Crop Brick, click the little "cropping corners" icon, and you should be able to crop.
"c" is the shortcut for bringing up the crop tool when you are in the Viewer.  Notice that the tools in the toolstrip (on the bottom border of the viewing area) change depending on whether you are using the Browser or the Viewer.
Strongly suggest reading the first seven chapters of the User Manual.  Aperture is a rich and complex continent, mostly submerged.  The first seven chapters provide a guide to the flora and fauna, as well as a map.

  • Make the Pen Tool snap

    Hello!
I've always created my paths in Illustrator, and then imported them to Photoshop, but
I wanted to give paths a goo in Photoshop but the first hick-up was; how do I created paths with the pen tool
and make it snap to the pixel grid?
I've tried both with the regular grid, and with the zoom-to pixel grid, but the Pen Tool won't snap to anything!
Am I missing something, feels like such a vital feature...?
    Cheers,
    Petter

    Hello,
Thanks for the answers! I toke a couple of new approaches, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for...
I've used Guides before, but then I really need to know what I'm drawing before I draw it
However, I managed to find a really good solution for me:
What I did was use FireWorks (which has a great workflow for paths, snapping to everything "out of the box")
and then save it as a PSD. When I then open it in Photoshop, I can use them as shapes/compund shapes
and use the Layer Style to put my colours on them!
    Cheers,
    Petter

  • The crop tool makes every photo only 1 pixel large

    Software: Adobe Photoshop CS3
    OS: XP w/SP3

When cropping a photo, the crop tool highlights the photo correctly, but when the crop is activated it resized the photo to about 1 pixel, no matter how large or small the selection crop was.

I fully installed all the updates, when unsuccessful, I repaired the installation, when that was unsuccessful, I completely uninstalled and then reinstalled Photoshop. This was also unsuccessful...

hit the clear button in the option bar when selecting the crop tool. if that doesn't reset it, see the faq in this forum about resetting your photoshop preferences.

  • Crop Tool does not snap reliably

Still getting used to Photoshop CS5.1. I am having problems with the crop tool. It is supposed to snap to my guides, but it is very haphazard about this. Sometimes it is a pixel or 2 off on one or more edges. This means I have to pay very close attention while cropping, and double check the accuracy of results. This slows me way down. I do mostly web graphics, where pixel accurate crops are essential. I already tried resetting the crop tool. I am using a Mac Pro, early 2008, with 10 GB RAM, and Mountain Lion 10.8.1.

I think the the Crop Tool always snaps to pixels while it is initially dragged to size. If a guide is not precisely on a pixel boundary then the Crop Tool will not initially snap exactly to the guide - it should snap to the next outward pixel boundary.
After the initial dragging out of the crop box, slightly drag each of its sides away from the guide and back to the guide for a correct snap to the guide.
If your guides are supposed to be on pixel boundaries then the problem may be that they are a tiny bit off and so the Crop Tool is snapping to the next pixel boundary outwards. To ensure guides snap to pixels, set the ruler to pixels and hold down Shift while dragging a guide to make it snap to ruler divisions (regardless of the rulers actually being visible or not).

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • BRING BACK THE CROP TOOL

The one tool that i use everday, the croptool, is gone from CS4.
I hate the multiple artboards, without the same co-ordinates really, what good are they, but i rant.
The crop tool was best for making a box around selections, (crop to selections, release, voila, a box
that fits perfect to selections), Perfect for print production, never mind pasting between the suite.
Slice does not have the accuracy.
Please bring it back, or a filter that can "draw" boxes around selections with accuracy.

Yeah I've been reading all over internet and all over the design blog I use to read and taking off the crop tool was kinda mistake. I use it a lot on the office for pinting and for quick shooting of differente art  works. I do like the art boards option but is certainly does not do the things crop tool used to make.
For me personally has been really complicated doing things I used to do so quickly. For the next version of Illustrator would be great to bring it back. I think all people would agree with me, if not refer to any blog and you'll see people commentaries about it.
Either way CS4 is a good version and I really like artboard feature, but as I say doesnt do what crop tool does. Bring it back please.

  • Setting the Crop Tool Dimensions Automatically in the Middle of a Script

Is there a way to set the crop tool to an 8"x10" dimension in the middle of a script? I have a script where it prompts the user to set the crop tool manually to 8"x10" and then crop the image manually, and continues thereafter, and in another part of the script, a message alerts the user to set the crop dimension to 7"x5". I am not sure if this is possible. I tried to load a preset but it does not work the next time Photoshop is opened.
    Waiting for any hint..thanks.

Yes but not so much with the crop tool.  Your better off with a selection then image crop http://forums.adobe.com/message/4476999#4476999
Once you set the selection you can also make the action interactive by adding a interactive transform selection step the you turn on its dialog. While recording the action you rotate the transform 180 degree which actuallu doe not change the selection. However it let the user to just hit enter to accept the selection.  If you fail to rotate the selection when you record the action. Just hitting enter would cancel the transform selection and the action would stop at the transform selection step.  You can also cancel the transform to stop the action because you made a manual error not holding the shift key to maintaim the selection 4:5(8:10) aspect ratio and you moved a cornor or side.  Once you cancel the transform selection you can click play the action will start pyaying from the transfor selection and you can retry transforming the 4:5 selection correctly.

Hello, my name is Todd, I recently dowloaded PS CC 2014. I have used PS for decades. The crop tool will show the progress bar, then at about 25% it will totally stop, even on VERY small 72dpi images. What can I do? Thanks!

Double check all the settings in the crop tool, and make sure you aren't telling it to create a HUGE image as a result of your settings.

  • I use PSE 9 and i just recently encountered a problem trying to crop a photo. I can't find the crop tool. What am I doing wrong?

I have been using PSE for quite a while but I am not a power user. I often use the crop tool to trim unwanted elements and set the size for the paper I want to use. When I opened a photo to edit yesterday the crop tool was not there. There is a tool named recompose but if I click it I cannot make any adjustments. I do not know if other functions are affected and I have no idea how to check them. I have no idea what caused this problem and would appreciate any assistance in resolving the problem.

Which operating system are you using?
The Crop Tool shares the same tool slot in the toolbox with the Recompose Tool.
You should be able to Left click and hold on the toolbox icons to see the fly-out menus for the tools that share the same slots.
Tools in the toolbox that have other tools in the same slot have a little black arrow to the right of the tool icons.
One can also use Shift+C to switch between the Crop and Recompose Tools.

  • Where is the Crop tool in CS6?

I used to use the Rectangular Marquee to crop an image, but that is no longer an option.  Where is the Crop tool?  I tried to use instructions at Photoshop Help | Adjusting crop, rotation, and canvas but that did not help.  It never did tell you how to crop an image.

I used to use the Rectangular Marquee to crop an image, but that is no longer an option.
    Why?
Make the Selection, then use Image > Crop if you want to use that Tool.
The Crop Tool still has the single-key-shorcut C, so depending on your settings hitting C or shift-C repeatedly should select the Tools with which the Crop Tool shares a space in the Toolbox in turn.

  • Fine control of the crop tool

I'm using Photoshop Elements 9 on Mac OS 10.7.2. Is there a way to fine tune the motion of the crop tool? When cropping a phot, the crop box seems to jump pixel-by-pixel. Is there a button I can hold down while cropping that will allow completely smooth movement?

You should be able to hold down the Cmd key to keep the crop tool from snapping to the edges of the document.

  • How can I fine tune what the Crop Tool crops (page, not image)?

When cropping a page using the Crop Tool, it seems to snap to preset dimensions, so that I can't crop to exactly the area I want to crop.

I did... and that fixed it... thanks!

  • Enlarging photos after rotating with the crop tool

    Hi,
I will try a second attempt for my wish to add a feature to the crop tool:
I like the cropping tool in lightroom, but there is one feature I miss:
    Sometimes I have this situation:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellersiek/2633499034
Knowing, that in most situations the limiting cropping is ok, I wish to have an option to enlarge the resulting image like this way:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellersiek/2632678737
It is okay, if there is an option in the preferences with the ablility to select a color for the "new" pixels and the crop tool will only enlarge the picture while pressing the control key (to avoid undesirable results).
You can say: "take the right picture, move your camera", but in such photo sessions we have some good reasons to take the pictures in this way.
    With greatings from germany
    Ralf

Of cause, after enlarging by Lightroom, I have to do something with the new area/pixels by hand. By the way, I only wish new pixels in a, in the settings definable, color - no "intelligent" enlarging.
In the session of the shown example we took 50 product pictures. In 45 pictures are the products inside enough for the cropping tool. We need a fix rotate angle for all the picture so we use sync settings to transfer all settings (white balancing, color, light, rotate, crop). 5 pictures we cropped to much, so we have to rotate in later in photoshop - this breaked the workflow.
I like Lightroom very much, because it is much faster than Photoshop, non destruktive and it is easy and fast to repeate the processing if you need to change some parameters. So I which to do the most steps in Lightroom and only those steps, for which lightroom is not designed, I will done with Photoshop.
I miss the enlarging also in other situations (like architectual or landscape photos). Sure I have to do some steps later by hand but I was able to the most steps in Lighroom in a single workflow with a single setting.
    Greeting from Germany
    Ralf
PS.: I'm not a native english speaker: What do you mean with "How is it supposed to make a judgement call about how to create the new pixels"?

  • Why is the crop tool in Lightroom 5 so sluggish on my otherwise very fast machine?

I'm running a Macbook Pro Retina, new from this time last year.  It's got 16gb RAM, a 768gb SSD (with about 150gb free space), and 2.8GHz processor.  Everything else is lightening fast on my system.  Lightroom is fine otherwise, but the crop tool is almost unusably slow.  When I tap "R", it sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load into crop mode, and another 5-10 seconds to load out of it.
Additionally, it will show the incorrect preview in crop for the first few seconds, so if I go back to re-crop something, it will act as if I am adjusting the cropped version rather than the original, so if I exit too quickly, it comes back wrong.
I've tried what other users recommended - using both full screen and not, updated to the latest version, restarted multiple times with no solution.  Please help!

I was amazed at the amount of info you put into that post. Thanks for that effort.
I made sure Onyx was up-to-date and ran all the schemes you listed. That did nothing. However, reading further in your support thread gave me some ideas. I started looking into third party extensions and plugins. I recalled installing Silverlight a few days ago, for what reason I have no idea, since I trust Microsoft only marginally more than I trust Google. Which is to say, I don't trust either of them at all. So I threw that plugin into the trash.
I should have checked the performance right there, but I didn't. Right under Silverlight, you mentioned Flash. I decided to check the prefs on it, and found that it was set to allow sites to save info to my computer, and Camera/Mic and Playback were changed from "Block" to "Ask Me". I distinctly remember setting those for maximum privacy. I reset them, cleared all the files, and exited the prefs.
I just checked them again, and everything is changed back to allow Flash to have its way. Looks like I'll be uninstalling that now...
I also installed Acrobat recently, just to have an alternative to Preview. Sea Monkey opened an alert box just now, telling me to watch out for the Acrobat plugins, as they've been known to cause problems. Gotta love Adobe.
Back to the topic at hand, I think it was the Silverlight plugin that caused the slowdown. All my browsers are running at full speed now after I threw that plugin out. (Now if I could just get Safari to allow me to back up a page without re-rendering it every time...)
Thanks very much for the help.
