Make this as Object or Paragraph Style

hi guys,
Is there any way i could "build" this as an Object Style or Paragraph Style?
I have more than 50 of those titles of articles and going one by one with the eyedropper to change or modify them later if i want a thicker stroke for example is very time consuming.
Thanks for any help or ideas.
Cheers,
S

Ooh, an easy one. There are a few ways to handle this, but here's my favorite:
You need to make three separate paragraph styles: one for texts, one for images, one for your ruled hanging-indent-with-asterisk paragraph.
In the "texts" parastyle, make sure Next Style is set to "images."
In the "images" parastyle, make sure Next Style is set to "asterisk."
Select all three paragraphs with the text tool, then right-click on "texts" parastyle and choose "Apply "texts", then Next Style"

  • Automatically create Object, Character & Paragraphs style when you copy & paste the same item.

InDesign could create styles automatically. If I am copying and paste an object or paragraph - that means I will be using it in multiple pages and consequently be making changes to it. I know I can always create a syle for all my elements, but having that feature build-in would be great. Especially for the designers like me who works on small documents. Great Forum!
    Thanks!

InDesign make it really easy for you to create styles. I just believe that having it as an automatic feature (of course, an optional feature) would save time when working in small - mini publications, where there is really no need to create syles . Just my thought.

  • Framemaker 8 problem with paragraph styles

    Hi,
I manage a documentation (one file) including paragraph styles organized like that :
    -- Chapter
         |--- Sub chapter
           |--- Sub Sub chapter
    My question is simple
When a create a PDF file from my document, including bookmarks, I'm encountering the following problem :
The "chapter 4", "sub chapter 4" and "sub sub chapter 4" paragraphs are created correctly. The bookmarks are created with the correct place.
    Like that :
    |---- chapter 4
      |---- sub chapter 4
       |----- sub sub chapter 4
    BUT
The "sub sub chapter "5 paragraph styles are created into the "Chapter 4" structure, added with the "sub sub chapter" of Chapter 4. And the Chapter 5 just contains the "chapter 5" and "sub chapter 5" bookmarks.
    Like that :
    Chapter 4
        |---- sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 5
    Chapter 5
       |--- sub chapter 5
After checking the structure of my document, I do not find any thing which could create this problem.
The paragraph styles seems to be correct.
Thank you so so much to help me because I don't know how to replace the "sub sub chapter 5" below the" sub chapter 5".
    Phil ;o)

There are a few ways to go with this. One is to put all the files in a Book,
temporarily, and set the one with the correct style definition as the
source, then synchronize the paragraph styles. This will change ALL styles
with the same names throughout all the documents, and add any styles that
are present in the source, but not in one of the other files, so it is a bit
risky, especially if any styles are based on or [Basic
Paragraph] itself is used in one of the files and it isn't already defined
exactly the same in all files.
You can also open any file and go to the Paragraph Styles panel menu and
choose Load Styles, then select the style you want to load, and how to
handle a conflict (Use Incoming), which will give you more control over what
    happens.
Or each time you open a file and get the missing font warning you can go to
Find Font and select the missing font, then pcik your substitute, check the
redefine styles box, and click Change All. This would probably be the best
choice since it doesn't depend on style names to make the correct changes.

  • Vertical rules in paragraph style?

    Hi,
I'm about to design a book with a lot of interviews. To make it a bit easier for the reader to follow I've designed a thin colored line to the left of the paragraph indicating who's saying what (see pic). The problem is that I can't seem to make these lines with the paragraph style which will be a problem further down the line if I do it manual with the line-tool. So my question is; Dose anyone have a solution that will make the lines flow dynamically together with the text?

    Make a Paragraph Rule Above
Basically - on the paragraph go to Paragraph Rules in the Paragraph Style
Then Apply a negative right or left indent and set the point size to equal the leading of the paragraph, so if you have 5 lines and the leading is 14pt, then the pt size for the thickness of the rule should be 70
For 8/14pt with 8 lines of text
    So Rule Below (tick box)
    Color: (pick a color)
    Weight 113pt (14 x 8 = 113)
    Width = Column
    Offset = 108 pts
    Left indent = -8.5 pts
    Right indent = 173pts
(adjust left and right indents to vary thickness)
It's not perfect as if the text increases or decreases you have to adjust the size of the line.
You could always anchor an object to the text, and offset (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6c43a.html )

  • Trouble with CS5 InDesign Paragraph Styles

I am creating a new template. I want one style to be "TOC Title", and another to be "TOC Level 1". All my concerns center around the Paragraph Style Options window (Type > Paragraph Styles > Create New Style >(double-click style to modify)  )
    1. No matter what I do, if I stipulate that "TOC Level 1" has leading (Tabs option, enter a "." or period in the Leader box), then InDesign does this for ALL my paragraph styles.
For the record, under the General option, my "Based On" box is set to "[No Paragraph Style]" for both paragraph styles.
So either I have to live with the TOC title having leading on it, or the TOC Level 1 having none, and in either case having to do something manually to the TOC everytime I use the template.
How can I fix this so that TOC Title has no Leader and TOC Level 1 has a Leader of "." ?
    2. How can I set my TOC Title paragraph style so that it centers on the page?
Edit: Two days later and no reply - I would have gladly supplied more information if I did not make the issue clear enough, and I would have even appreciated a simple "Sorry, I don't know." Since it is highly improbable that nobody out there knows ANYTHING about Paragraph Style tabs in Adobe CS5 InDesign, I must conclude that my issue is simply not "in" enough to be considered worthy of attention from the unnamed scores of elitists which must run this forum.

I think the only way I'm going to be able to understand the problem is to see a sample file. Please make a sample, even if it has nothing more than your style definitions that are failing, and post a link to it here.

  • Exporting text only from specific paragraph style

    Hi,
Is there a way to export text from Indesign to txt or preferably Excel from specific paragraph style ? I am trying to export only item numbers and prices to excel spread sheet so I can compare against original excel spreadsheet.
    Thank you !

Not built in, no. But you could do this:
Create a new paragraph style called "Delete Me". In the paragraph styles
palette, select all the paragraph styles you're NOT interested in.
Delete them in one go, and replace them with "Delete Me."
Now, in the find/replace box, search for "Delete Me" and replace with
nothing. This will cause all the paragraphs that have the "Delete Me"
    style to be deleted.
Now what remains in your document is only the text that you're
    interested in.

  • TOC for ePub Paragraph style editing

I'm trying to figure out if InDesign can allow us to editor the dynamic table of contents. What we have is basically this:
    Chapter number (unique paragraph style)
    Chapter title (unique paragraph style)
    First paragraph (unique paragraph style)
We want the ToC that gets pulled up in a eBook reader to show this:
    Chapter 1: Chapter Title
    Chapter 2: Chapter Title
Right now, InDesign seems to only export each as a specifc paragraph style, without setting them on the same line side by side. We get stuck with:
    Chapter 1
         Chapter Title
    Chapter 2
         Chapter Title
Does anyone know of a way to export the ePub so it's what we want rather than this hirarchically broken way?

This TOC issue has bugged me for years.
I have been able to come up with certain workarounds, but only when my physical (print) TOC just happens to be set up exactly as I would like it displayed in the ePub (this is not always the case).
It would be wonderful if there was a way for us to better control how the TOC info is output when exporting to ePub.
For now, the fastest and easiest way to deal with this issue (for me anyway), is to manually update it in the ePub file after export.

  • Create automatic white gap/bar with paragraph style

    Hello,
Thanks to your help and the Paragraph Ruler trick, I managed to get automatic title formatting (the grey background)
Now, I would like to get automatically white gap as in line two but I can't figure out how to do it (tried with strikethrough but it's all over the text, you can't cheat).
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

Here I am (sorry I didn't answer before, during the weekend i am not in my office).
You didn't tell us why do you want to change the text box width? That could help us to give you a better answer.
However if you need to have different text box width you can use this method:
Only one paragraph style with only one rule column width, "vertical line" and grep style.

    Hi All,

I have a JS code for replace paragraph style (come word file (floppy style)) its working good. But my problem is that when run this code if find paragraph style not define (word file (floppy style)) in flow indesign file then error. Is that possible if paragraph style not find then ignore then run next step. Please see code below
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;

    myParagraphStyleA.remove(myDocument.paragraphStyles.item("1H: One Head"));

Hello Sir (Harbs, Jongware and other),
I am really sorry for late answering. I am junior so heavy workload.
This line code "h1" paragraph style actually comes ms-word file (floppy style).
    var myParagraphStyleA = myDocument.paragraphStyles.item("h1");
Second line code "1H: One Head" is InDesign CS4 paragraph style.
    var myParagraphStyleA = myDocument.paragraphStyles.item("h1");
If "h1" PS comes (ms-word) in InDesign then code run good. In case if "h1" PS not comes in InDesign file then script error.
I have just mapping both Paragraph Style (PS) (ms-word, InDesign) if both styles mapping then script run. When run same script other chapters if any tag not come form (ms-word) but whose PS define in script then script error.
My question is that if any PS comes from (ms-word) if this style not define in script, script run properly otherwise script display massage these PS (ms-word(floppy)) not define in your script code.
    (2) My second query
If all PS mapping by script but ms-word style (floppy) appear in my indesign file. Is that possible these PS replace (mapping) ms-word style (floppy) automatically remove.
    Thank you so much

  • How to replace a paragraph style with object style

    Hi,
I am having this issue lately that in paginating a newspaper I have to do all premium post with a Rectangle Border. the problem is that the text is in the grid.
Is there anyway that, while I add a specific paragraph style to some parts of the text, I can automatically give this text a specific Object Style (like stroke rectangle)
    Does it make sense?
    Thank you very much

    Michael,
I think that I did not explain myself as I should have. The problem is not really related to links but more of a automatic replacement issue.
Every time I do this newspaper I include a new text information and the location of the Headers changes in every single case.
    http://i.imgur.com/sgQ2wIK.jpg
In the link, the blue paragraphs need to be replaced with the respective Header Icons that you see on top and everytime this location of the headers in the newspaper changes due to the different number of posts in each specific category. Now the problem is related on how to autoaticaly replace this string in blue with its respective header
thanks a lot in advace for all your help

  • Is it possible to have an anchored object linked to a paragraph style?

I want to link an anchored object to a paragraph style, so that whenever a paragraph that has a particular style is created, an anchored object is created at the same time. The particular application is to label the associate text with the anchored object. is this possible?

  • Anchoring Object to a Paragraph Style? Objects behind text

    Hello,
I am trying to anchor an graphic object to a paragraph style that is a numbered paragraph.  I have set up my numbering and I want a single graphic to be anchored to the number so it appears behind the number each time I choose that paragrah style.
    Is this possible to do?
Or perhaps I should ask how other people put graphics behind bullets or numbers and have them anchor to the text...
I sure could use soem help with this; it seems like it should be easy...
    Dave.

I found this intriguing, so I thought I'd see what I could come up with.
I made a numbered paragraph style, to start. Then I made a Cyan filled ellipse, which I anchored in front of the first word in one of the paragraphs, and changed the positioning to custom and made sure it was relative to the anchor, and turned off keep within frame boundaries, to allow me to position it "behind" the number. As emmanuel points out, anchored objects are actually in front of the text, so so far it's not working.
I selected the ellipse and changed it's blend mode to multiply. This will not change it's color where it is over white, but it will darken wherever it is on top of another color, creating a rich black number, for example, if you used black text. Looks pretty good now.
Select the ellipse and create a new object style based on it. This will by default include the blend mode and anchored object parameters, and be sure the style is applied to the selected ellipse. Now cut the ellipse and paste it on the pastboard out of the way so you don't lose it.
As long as the object is on the clipboard you can use it for a find/change operation, so you can do that now, or later, just by copying it again when it's convenient. The find/change needs to be a GREP search for ^(.) which means find any character at the beginning of a paragraph, and replace with ~c$1 which means replace with the formatted contents of the clipboard and the found character. Be sure to set the find formatting options to the numbered paragraph style.
Because you gave the object an object style that includes the blend mode and positioning, and you pasted it as a formatted object, those attributes are preserved and the graphic will be positioned correctly for each paragraph.

  • Nested styles: I can't seem to make this work

I can't seem to do this nested style: All Adobe Garamond. Headline: 24/25 centered. Return. Byline: 9/10 centered, stacked. "by" is italic with a .5, one inch wide  rule above. Return. Author's name is small caps with the same rule below. Return. Body text is 9/10 regular, first paragraph has a 3 line bold drop cap, the other paragraphs have a .25 indent.
Nothing seems to work when I try to set this up. Rules everywhere...and I am supposed to have the document set up in 14 hours....help!

Nested Styles are character styles added inside a paragraph style that  affect only certain parts of the text, based on trigger patterns that  you set up. Typically you would use a nested style to do somthing like make the first three words of a paragraph Italic, or make a price bold on a menu.
It's probably technically possible to achieve your title using nested styles, forced line breaks as triggers, and paragraph rules above and below with the proper offsets, but what you want to do is not typically done with nested styles, but rather with a series of individual paragraph styles that are applied in rotation automatically using the "next style" attribute.
Mikes example is using three paragraph styles for the heading. PStyle1 (just a place-holder name for a pragraph style here) is applied to the text Headline 2, and as part of that style defintion the "next style" is set to PStyle2. PStyle2 is applied to the By line, and its next style is set to PStyle3, which is applied to MW Design. Each of these lines is a separate paragraph (he should have shown you the non-printing characters so you could see the hard returns at the end of each line). PStyle3 should have its next style set to your style for the first paragraph of body text that includes the drop cap, and that one needs a next style set to the paragraph style for your other body text. This last body style should have the next style set to "same style."
If you are typing directly in ID, for each story, set the style to PStyle1 and begin typing. When you hit Enter to move to the by line, the style will change automatically, and will change again each time you hit Enter until you are inthe second paragraph of the body copy, where it will keep the same style until you change it manually again.
If you are working with imported text you can select an entire story froom the fiorst line of the title to the last last paragraph of body copy, then right click on the PStyle1 name in the Paragrapgh Styles panel and choose Apply PStyle1 and Next Style and the whole shebang will get the correct styles applied in one click.

  • Make paragraph style not override character style?

    Hi.
Is there any way to make a paragraph style NOT override a character style?
For example, I write a lot of scientific reports in Pages and then I use subscript and superscript often and so I have made a character style for that. But if I want to perhaps change the spacing between paragraphs in my body style. I select a paragraph, change the settings that I want and then I right click on the paragraph style and choose "redefine style from selection". Then I select all of that style and choose "revert to defined style" to get the updated paragraph spacing. But what this does is that it overrides all of the character styles so that everything in sub/superscript, bold, italic etc get back to the style. This is really bugging me out.
For the character styles you can select what attributes you want them to affect, is there any way to do this with paragraph styles as well? Or maybe some of you have got a good way to make it work.
    Thanks in advance.

When you redefine the paragraph style, all paragraphs using that style will display the new style properties, unless you've overriden them. Presumably this is why you choose "revert to defined style", so that other paragraphs that you've stylistically modified take on the proper paragraph style properties. If not, why revert at all?
Instead of using revert, why not re-apply the paragraph style (just click on the selected style in the drawer, or pick the selected item from the pop-up menu). It will discard your unwanted paragraph style overrides, and preserve the character styles.
