Make unused clips in selected bins offline relative to sequences - how?

hello, i've got a massive project coming to completion handing edls to online in week and running out of space.
is i possible to make clips in specific bins offline that haven't been used in the fine cut sequences?

use the find function (Apple F) and tell it to find all unused clips in project (optionally, select all the fine cut sequences and in the find dialog tick the "in selected sequences" checkbox)
then with all results selected choose Modify > Make Ofline... (Shift D) and look at the options; choose "Move Them to Trash", verify that the files you've trashed are the correct ones, then empty the trash (or choose "Delete Them from the Disk" if you're are feeling brave)

  • Unused Clips

This may be a crazy question but I wanted to know is there is anyway I can select on of the unused portion of the video in a project? I want to give the client all of the video that was not used in the final product.

Using the orange bar method as already mentioned you can do some more refining.
    Select Unused clips:
You should see all the bits unused, this covers all of a clip not used and bits of clips not used.
In the shot below, the clip has been partially used, shown by the orange bar.
The other two highlighted regions are unused, they will appear as two clips when unused is selected.
If you move the playhead a little past the end of your existing Project you will have a buffer to easily find the unused clips.
Select all the unused clips and do an Insert edit to your existing Timeline.
Go to the Timeline and select the newly edited unused clips only and export as a Master File.
Once the export is done you can delete the unused clips from the Timeline if you like.

  • How to make a comp from selection using clip names

I have a lot of footage imported into AE7 and I am looking for a way to make an individual comp for each clip using the clip's name as the comp name.  When I use the "Comp from Selection. . ." menu item, AE creates a comp name with the next sequential number available.
For example, if my clips have names like "Subclip 1, Subclip 2, Subclip 3. When I use the make comp for selection option, AE will make a comp from each clip, but it will name the comps Subclip 4, Subclip 5, Subclip 6, starting from the last sequential number from the clip names.
Is there a way to do this without scripting?  Or and easy way to do it with scripting?
    Thanks

Thanks, TimeRemapper this function still works in AE7, but it generates the same result as selecting all the clips and selecting File>New Comp From Selection. . .
I tried a set of files with unique names instead of a series of clips with the same clip name followed by a number.  The list of unique named files generated a Comp with the number 2 after each comp name for every new comp created.

  • Small problem. The "Find all unused clips" function not working

    Hi all.
heres my problem. Im sitting with the Manuel in front of my mac but i cant get it right. I do it step by step.
After all the things i have to do to find all unused clips, the window named "find results" opens which is whats supposed so happen. BUT not just the unused clips are in that folder in fact all the clips in the same bin which i searched in appears i there. Im sure im just doing something wrong. If any of you guys have the answer to my question. THANKS!

Not sure if this is the problem, but you have to make sure you've selected the sequence in the Browser, not the Timeline, before going to the File menu and performing the rest of the steps. Otherwise, you get a different window that pops up. Just in case that helps you...

  • Multiple instances of the same source clip in Project bin

    This is a strange one.
I think its more an issue now than ever due to tapeless format editing. I edit lots of video now shot on Canon 5d. They sometimes have thousands of individual clips.
The problem is that our project files are getting huge and premiere slows to a grinding halt.
We copy paste lots of timelines from one project to another. When we paste, all of the source clips land in the project bin (as you would expect) However, sometimes I have already made reference to the same source files in the edit to begin with (So they are already in the project bin)
However, when I paste a new timeline, it will make another reference to that same source clip in the project bin. Therefore double up reference to a souce clip in the project. Increasing the clips in the overall project, which bloats everything and slows premiere down.
Can premiere be smarter? Can it see that the source file already exists in the project and link to that existing file instead of creating another reference to the same file?
    Hope that makes sence.

I am beginning to think that there is no easy way around this issue.
I have started to use Final Cut and am noticing lots of differences between the two platforms. I have been a Adobe Premiere user for 10 years and I concider myself a NINJA using this program. However, there are definitly differences between the two, this being one of them.
Final cut does not double up on source references in your project bin when copying one sequence from one project into another.
    CLEVER
Its annoying that premiere doubles files up as it gets ridiculously messy in your project bin. Double ups, triple ups, quadruple ups the list goes on.
Its strange cause when you start a Prem project from scratch and import a source clip, you can set in and out points as many times as possible and drag onto the timeline, and it does not duplicate the original source file in the project bin. Thus keeping your project bin neat and clean. However, as soon as you paste a sequence, it goes and duplicates refeneces like its outta control, rather than looking at what you alraedy have in your project bin and saying to itself. (Hmmm well the source clip is already here, so we dont have to duplicate this one....move onto the next file)
Prem is great at lots of things, dont get me wrong. I freaking love the program, however, things like this let it down as the program becomes unusable as it gets bogged down with way too many clip references.
Hmmm, we shall see who wins the day in the end. Time do do some Final Cut edditing now.
P.S. Final cut can do 16 multi clips in a real time edit. Premiere...only 4...come on Prem, pick up your game!

  • Clearing out unused clips

I have created a lengthy sequence from a large number of clips. However, it would be very useful in the Browser to be able to identify only those clips which are being used in the sequence and delete all the others. Can this be done?

Unfortunately, no, there is no easy way to tell which clips in the browser are actually being used in a sequence. There is no media management as such in FCE.
Here is a partial solution, which may help - you could put the browser in *List View* and then check for clips that have IN and OUT points. Those would be clips in use. For the most part they are going to be Master clips. If you have a Master clip with an IN or OUT point, then it is being used somewhere. +However, it is possible that you may have placed clips in the Timeline without setting IN or OUT points.+ So you have to be careful about interpreting what you see in the FCE Browser. Just because a clip has no IN or OUT points does not mean that it is unused.
You also need to be careful about Affiliate Clips and Independent Clips. They only appear in the Timeline.
Affiliate Clips are related to Master Clips. Only the Master Clip takes up space on your hard drive. Even if the Affiliate Clip is listed in the FCE Browser, it still has a relationship with its Master Clip and it does not take up any space on your hard drive - only the Master Clip does. If you delete a Master Clip from your hard drive then all its Affiliate Clips will go offline and not be recoverable.
Independent Clips are related to actual video clips on your hard drive but they are not related to a Master Clip in the FCE Browser. And they don't appear in the FCE Browser ... unless you open them in the Viewer and then drag them back to the FCE Browser.

  • Batch rename clips in my bin

I have a 30min clip on the timeline and when I find a shot I like, I use my blade tool to cut an in/out. I then drag this cut clip to video layer 2, which is where all my clips will be that will be used in my project.
Then I create a new bin and drag all these shots from video layer 2, to this bin. The problem I’m having is now have to click on each individual clip and rename them manually.
Is there any way I can select all the clips within the bin and lets say auto batch rename the selected clips.
I know I can solve this by placing the clip in the viewer and setting an in/out marker and then make a subclip, however I really like scrubbing through my footage on the timeline because I can view my clip in the filmstrip mode which i'm use to and love cutting my footage this way.
Please tell me this is possible!

So let's come to the point that you explain WHY to batch rename, and what the names will look like.
Do you want to have them numbered?
With my suggested workflow that will be, because if you skip the line where I suggested to type a name, then all subclips will be numbered sequentially.
I understand that's not what you want, but it can be a starter for a workaround, because I think what you are looking for doesn't exist yet. (unless you use batch export, which has the ability to change and add pre- and suffixes; then import; but that will cost time and diskspace).
I'm curious to hear the idea behind your workflow.

edit: Sorry if I seem eager to have you use my workflow-idea. I'm not. I'm just curious what problems you have with it.

  • How to make a clipping mask in this particular case?

Okay, Just to begin I know how to make a clipping mask, but for the case that I'm going to present right now I just can't figure out what mistake I am doing (if any). However I am a beginner.
    http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/illustration/how-to-create-a-medieval-paper-scroll/
In the link to above tutorial on how to make a medieval scrol I'm stuck at step 25 and would be glad to anyone who helped.
As said in step 25 that expand the appearance of the scroll and select the two then clip the mask. In th above picture I have just selected the scroll to show how it looks.
Now as you can see in the image below I have expanded the appearance of the paper scroll. Then I selected the paper scrol and the yellowish green grunge background placed below it. And the moment I hit Ctrl+7 (in windows) or Command+7 (in Mac) to make a clipping mask the error that showed up has been highlighted.
One more thing, I have clipped masks before too in the same tutorial given above but I don't know what has gone wrong for me in this step.
    Please help.
    Signed,
    Awais Rauf

Why would you want a clipping mask? I don’t see a reason for it.
However, for what you want I would use the Pathfinder panel to combine all the paths into one shape. First use the ungroup and release compound commands a few times each, to make sure you have nothing grouped. Then press the top left button in the Pathfinder p[panel. This should produce one closed path that just surrounds the scroll.

  • How do I make a clip "independant" in FCP 7.0.3?

I have two imported DV clips.
    - One is 45 minutes long
    - One is about 15 minutes long
I want to break these two captured files up into "chunks" so I can edit them in the timeline without even referencing the original DV clips.
Reason: editing nightmare I am trying to resolve.
    - I know how to use "mark dv start/stop" in each DV clip to segment my DV clips into my original "shots" on DV tape.
    - I know how to make "subclips" from the 'segments".
What I don't know how to do is to make these new clips TOTALLY independant of the source footage because my edits are getting completely messed up.  Someone suggested I make the new segment clips "independant" clips, but I can't seem to find that option anywhere.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

    Thank you ALL!
These are some of the best answer I have got so far, but let me run a few things by you and see what you think...
My original, orignal question was something like "How do I import and break up my video so I can edit my shots on the timeline?"
My real goal, as you might guess, is to make FCP do the grunt work so I can get my "shots" from the DV camera into the timeline so I can cut them, move them around, synch them to audio etc.  That's why FCP is called a non-linear editor.  Right?
I really don't want to have to export and then reimport a bunch of video clips because that's a lot of work for ME.  I know that you can do this, and I know how to do it, but come on!  I want to make FCP do that work, and theorietically it should be able to do this.
From digging around on the internet, and from asking multiple questions on this forum, here is the workflow I have peiced together.  (I am not sure if it will work yet because I still have to test it...)
I think the complete answer is:
    1) Capture video to a project (the whole tape)
    2) Select the master clip (the whole tape) in the browser and choose "Mark/ DV Start/Stop" (just like you said)
    3) Select the resulting video "segments" in the browser and choose "Make Clip" from the modify menu (this converts the original captured segments into subclips)
    4) Select the resulting video subclips and drag them to the timeline for editing (I am not sure if I also need to "Remove Clip Limitations" from the subclips as well, but at least I know where to look if my 5 steps don't work)
    5) Right click on the video subclips in the timeline and choose "make independant clip"
The bottom line is that I am trying to get FCP to do the grunt work of keeping track of my video ins/outs, segments, subclips and independant clips without me having to manage 100 files on my hard drive in the project folder!  The whole point of NLE is to let the computer figure out how to arrange and render all of your stuff based on information that is stored in the FCP file.
    Thoughts?

  • Clips always unrendered and offline when project is loaded

Having a weird problem at the moment that seems to make no sense at all, so any help would be vastly appriciated. Currently have a project where everytime it is loaded up all the footage with effects on, or with titles, says media offline, despite the clips still being avaible and accesible within the program. However, when any variable is clicked in the Effect Control panal on a clip, for example the clip's Scale, the clip comes back, but unrendered. When I say click on any of the variables I don't mean change any of them, just the simple act of clicking on the number 100 next to Scale brings the clip back. Bizzarre to say the least! Obviously this is starting to get very annoying, as the act of clicking on every clip's Scale and rendering before any new work can be done on the project is getting very tiresome...
    Any help?

Are you perhaps experiencing this issue?: FAQ:Why are my clips showing as "Media Offline"?
    Cheers

  • What can be done to avoid getting the following error when trying to delete unused clips he operation could not be completed.  *** -[__NSArrayM insertObject:atIndex:]: object cannot be nil

what can be done to avoid getting the following error when trying to delete unused clips in Imovie 09 "the operation could not be completed.  *** -[__NSArrayM insertObject:atIndex:]: object cannot be nil"  I use to get these type of error messages when trying to delete unsused clips from a large event 60 minutes or longer, but now I get this message when trying to reduce a 4 minute event.
Also, does anyone know if there is a limit to the total amount of space that can be taken up by Projects in Imovie 09
    Thanks for any help

    Zachy,
    It goes something like this...
Put your new drive in the enclosure. Use Disk Utility to format it, etc. I'd give it a slightly different name than the original. Let's say you have Old Disk and New Disk as your drive names. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Old Disk to New Disk. Now you should have an exact copy, which you can test by rebooting and holding down the Option key. Choose New Disk from the list and let it boot, make sure all is well.
Shut down and physically swap the drives. Take Old Disk and put it in the enclosure. Now your system has a new disk with a lot more space and you can reformat your old disk and just use it for large files or whatever.

  • How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure?

    Hi guys,
I am editing a map and need my map split into multiple rectangular segments. My map is made up of many layers and sub layers which I need to preserve. When I clipping mask the map with a rectangle all of the map's subs layers merge into one layer. How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure? It seems like a 'layer mask' is the correct tool but doesn't seem like CS6 has it?
    Cheers
    Mat

I avoid sublayers, because they really were never thoroughly developed, and when you open files, you get all your layers flipped open.
So for me paste in front works great for pasting a mask directly above the element you want to mask. Unfortunatley paste in front does not work well with sublayers so you will need to drag the mask down into the the sublayer. But atleast if you have a complex document with many sublayers, the paste in fornt gets you close.
eg; Mask is in clipboard, I select sublayer Illinois
After doing a paste in front, the mask (star shape) is not in the sublayer, but above
Drag the star shape down one in to the sublayer Illinois, select entire sublayer(use radio button right of the layer name)
    and make clip mask

  • Clip markers in bin disappearing

I have 5 to 6 clips in a bin. The clips have a range of up 60 markers.
When I twirl down to view them all it gets cut off.

I've noticed this too - I've just had to make shorter clips or use less markers. Seems to be a limit on how many markers get displayed in a clips. All markers still do get displayed in the actual clip in the viewer though.
