Make Windows 7 search function search file names only

Hello,
Is there a way to search for a file name (like in previous versions of Widows) rather than searching for anything containing that word? For example,
I want to search a for files with the word 'Pension' in the title, but intead I receive thousands of results for files called containing the word pension as well as those with 'pension' in the title.
Thanks!

Yeah, I know.  It works for some and not for others.  It depends on cryptic settings that waste more time than it takes to find the files manually.  I have run searches for simple file names...nothing complicated, with indexing on and off.
I let it run overnight until it was fully complete.  It left out 33 results, including what I was looking for.  With Agent Ransack, all of the results were found...including what I was looking for in less than a minute.  Google Windows 7 search
problems sometime and you will find pages and pages of people with problems trying to tweak it left and right hoping it would work.  In the end, it is simply not worth the time when much more efficient and free alternatives are available.
What do you want me to say? If you don't know how to use the solution, then you just don't know. I can't make it any simpler for you as to where the problem is at,  and you need not cry about it.
I think a 5 year old with an open mind that is sharp minded can easily figure out how to use the Search, once he or she was shown how to use it. :)

  • Change search options to FILE NAME only

Is there a way to change the search options to always search for FILE NAME only?
I don't know who'd saech for contents every time, that would seem like a last resort if you couldn't find what you are originally looking for and forgot the file name. We have 10's of thousands of files and having the stupid contents pop up EACH time I want to do a search wastes so much time.

The only way to bypass the crippled Spotlight search is to use a tailored savedSearch. This is what I use. The system files allows finding things in the stupidly hidden user's Library:

  • Searching for a file name?

    Hey Guys,
Is there a way to fine the name of a text file? For example, I have 3 files 1235.txt, 2568.txt, and 2568.txt. I need to find one of these files and write user info into each one and then update the file with current user info.
I was just wonder if there is anyway you could search for a file name?
The reason I need to do this is because I want to store user details into seperate files, because I don't really want to use a random access file and using one file for all the users seems alot harder, when finding a file users info...
    Thanks Guys,

O yeah, I remember (google refresh my memory) this is what we were going to use in the first place except.. Because we must demo the program on completely locked down computers we can't install the drivers (that's what I was told) So, we can't use it...

  • EXS24 read root key from file name only

Has anyone encountered this with EXS24 in Logic 7? If you set preferences to "read root key from file name only" then EXS reads the root key from the file itself when loading samples. On the other hand if you set them to "read root key from file only" then it reads the root key from the file name. Or am I just imagining this?
P.S. if anyone from Apple is reading, could you please update EXS24? It's a bit primitive by today's standards.

Not a direct answer to your question, but if you are doing a lot of sample mapping etc, you may want to check out Redmatica's KeyMap Pro or the simpler Keymap 1:

  • How can I list my iphoto library by file name only?

How can I list my iphoto library by file name only?

There are two apps that can do that for your.
1 - the better of the two is  iPhoto Library Manager.  You will have to manually select those Events in Library A that are not in Library B and copy them to B.  Then do the same for B to A.  This also copies both the original and edited versions, keywords, titles, descriptions, faces and places.
2 - the second app is SyncPhotos.  This one is automatic and will copy the original images in A that are not in B into B and the same for B to A. This does not copy edited versions or any of the metadata, i.e. keywords, etc.

  • Search using partial file name?

I know this issue has been addressed before, but I haven't found a satisfactory answer.
I use the Search field in the toolbar to search for files on my external drive. That external drive contains a file named "housefly.psd." When I search for "house" using the File Name filter and with columns set to Kind, all the Photoshop files that begin with "house" appear at the top of the window, including the file I'm searching for.
But if I search for "fly," the "housefly.psd" file doesn't appear in the list at all, although files containing the word "fly" with a space before the word show up in the list (e.g. - "big fly.psd").
Users aren't always going to remember the initial characters in a file name they want to find. So how do I find the file if I only remember some of the internal characters?
    Thanks,

Yeah, isn't Spotlight great?! Give this example to all the experts who gush about Spotlight.
What you see is how Spotlight was designed to work -- at least for hoi polloi like us. The query looks for words, not strings. "Fly" is one word, "big fly" is two words, but "housefly" is one word. It contains the string "fly", but not the word "fly". Now, if you had had the foresight and forethought to name your file "HouseFly", then probably Spotlight would have found it, "Fly", unlike "fly" being, by the rules of the Apple wallahs, a word, not a string. Is that all? No, of course not, that would have been too simple. Spotlight also has hidden somewhere a private list of exceptions. So "books" in "Audiobooks" is always a word, no matter how capitalised; but in "Cookbooks" it's just a mere string, and hence not worthy of notice.
How do you get around this (without using Terminal)?
    (1) One way is to construct a query, as already suggested, with the Filename and Contains. But, beware! if you're searching in Finder, and you've already entered a string in the Spotlight search field on the toolbar, the query constructed thus will be restricted to the hits of the query already in the search field. So, if you've enter "fly" in the window toolbar search field, and then construct a Filename Contains "fly" query, you'll find nothing, because any subset of the ∅ (empty set) is also empty. This restriction applies to any query thus constructed.
    (2) If you are a real, hair-chested, red-blooded Mac user, you don't use namby-pamby Filename queries. You go straight for the jugular. In the pop-up menu, instead of "Filename", choose "Other...". Then scroll through the interminable list to "Raw Query" and enable it. Then type in the Raw Query search box
    kMDItemFSName == *fly*
Note 1: "*fly*", not "*fly", because the Item's File System Name is "housefly.psd".
Note 2: You can use the keyword "name" in the window toolbar Spotlight search field, thus
    name:housefly
However, this one doesn't take wildcards.
    (3) If you happen to be just a normal person, who uses a computer to be productive and not to exercise one's fingers by typing lengthy and abstruse keywords (or as a Rorschach test to have fun divining the inscrutable minds of Apple engineers), then my suggestion is to give Spotlight the widest possible berth and use something else. I suggest Find File by John R Chang, Find Any File by Thomas Tempelmann, and EasyFind by Christian Grünenberg.

  • Automator script search document for file name, and rename file to date

    Hi all,
I'm having a hard time with Automator... and I can't figure out how it's done!
Searched the web for it a couple of times, spend hours with Automator already, but I guess my need is random!
    The thing is:
I got a folder with 1066 files, all the files has random names.....
I got a document (now it's html, but can convert it to PDF or txt or so ever....) with the coressponding random file names in the html.... some words before that there is the date the photo was taken in this format: 08/25/11
Now I want somehow make automator search that folder each filename... match it in the document with the filename, and rename the files in the folder to the date the photo's were taken.... and that for all 1066 files.....
anybody a great idea? Some help? I'm a real newby at Automator scrips!
    thanks

Have you considered A Better Finder Rename 9?
A Better Finder Rename 9: The Batch File Renamer for Mac OS X
Otherwise, what you propose seems to be rather like carving the Pieta using a plastic butter knife. But, if you want, here's one example of a rough algorithm to start ...
    * translate the HTML to ASCII text in this format:  filename (date)
    * read one line at a time from the ASCII file
    * for each line, search the folder for the file
    * rename the file according to the (date)
BTW, you might avoid a strict renaming according to just the date.
    Best luck with this project.

  • An app to search photos by file name in ipad..

    Hello Everyone,
Hi this is romit. I am looking for an application in which one can search all images in ipad by its name.
For instance: in Mac we have spotlight to find an app by its name, no matter whats the location or type of app it is. provided the name and there you go.
In  windows OS we search box to find anything by its name. So I am looking for an app in Ipad which will give me result of provided photo with that file name.
If ANYONE KNOWS SUCH AN APP PLEASE REVERT TO THIS. IT WILL BE OF GREAT HELP.HNAK
    Thanks apple,

Photos on an iPad do not have meaningful file names.   If you synced Photos through iTunes their file names are turned into number sequences (ie img_95040.jpg).  There is nothing to search for that would be of any relevance, hence no to application really do this that I know of.

  • Using Finder search not displaying file names

I'm running 10.6.4 and searching from the finder on an Xserve for a file name 00035.png but it's not showing in the results.
    Any ideas?

To clarify your question, when you perform the file search through finder, at the bottom of the window is there a place where it says "x items" and is the number shown there greater than zero?
I am having trouble understanding if your search is returning results but they aren't being displayed, or if you're searching for a file you know is on your drive, but it's not being identified.

  • SEARCH results - shows file name. Can I change this?

I am using TCS2 in Windows XP.
In Robohelp when you search the online help, it brings back the search results but they are displayed under the filename heading. Can I change that? I don't necessarily want my filename displayed to users... maybe the Chapter name?
    TIA

    Hi--
I have no solution yet but am having very  much the same problem, and would like to get in on this conversation while I continue experimenting. I'm working TCS2 (Frame 9 and Robo 8), linking the Frame book to Robo to create CSH. I'm a long-time Framer but a newbie to Robo and TCS2.
As far as I can tell from reading through the thread, I've got some kind of variation going: some of my CSH Search results show the heading, and some show the filename. I haven't yet discovered what is the difference in the Frame file, although I believe that's where I'll find it. It's consistent from search to search. (That is, if it a topic shows up in Search results as the filename once, it does so consistently. Ditto others showing up as the heading.)
In addition to hereby signaling moral support (!) and an interest in a solution, I'd like to provide my settings here and see how yours compare.
The marker I created to manage output CSH filenames is "FileName." I'm working with engineers who are not native English speakers and have never implemented  CSH. For the 30 or so (out of 75) topics that actually are going to be  linked from the application, I created FileName  marker text that starts with "LinkTo_<menupath>." (Example:  "LinkTo_WebSecurity_ServerSecurityGroups_Adding.") The idea is to help  them see what to link up where. (It also made editing map IDs faster: I just select and automap any topic name  starting with LinkTo_.)
So I'm getting Search results that look like this:
    Things to know about xyz
    text text text...
    LinkTo_Statistics_Events
    text text text...
My "File > Project Settings > Edit  conversion settings... > Other" settings are:
    Context Sensitive Help Marker: blank
Topic Name Pattern: grayed out but is "(Default)"
    Topic Name Marker:  FileName
Not sure this is optimum. (As I said, a Robo newbie.) Also, my chapter titles and H1 thru H3 are set up to paginate, although I  realized later that filling Topic Name Marker field disables pagination.
Thanks, will keep working on it --
    Anne

  • Can an Adobe search contain many file names to be retrieved in mass?

In any Adobe product, is there a way to cut and paste a large list of file names, in one search, to be retrieved from a data base of 100,000+ searchable .pdf files?  What is the maximum file names allowed in one search?  Can you "mass" print (or save) the results of the search?
We need a software product that can search for file names (entry numbers) within a huge searchable .pdf data base and retrieve the specific files listed on search to be printed or saved in mass.  Does anyone know if Adobe offers such a product?  I have read the specifics regarding Adobe search within the products, but I did not come away with the impression that Adobe could perform the type searches we are looking for?
Please advise if you know of any software product that could mass extract specific files from data base into a print queue.
    Thank you so much!

  • Search for a file name by time stamp

Powershell allows us to append the date faily easily to a file name (eg. "test.txt $(get-date -f dd-MM-yyyy).txt").  I'm looking for a simple script to search for a powershell script by a static name with todays date appended.  I
then want to move that file to a another location and rename it. For example lets say the file name is test.txt always and a 3rd party software names it to test12-9-14.txt daily so tommorow it would be test12-10-14.txt and so on.  Each day I need
to take the file testxx-xx-xxxx.txt from the the c:\ drive and move it to the w:\ drive and change the name from testxx-xx-xxxx.txt to test.csv.

I found the typo mm instead of MM which was my problem from the beginning.  MM represents month not mm.  A simple mistake that costed a lot of time.  Thanks Mike
Cheers, you're very welcome. Glad I could help out.

  • Adding keywords to a topic causes search to return file names instead of topic titles

When I search for a term in my WebHelp Pro project, the topics returned are shown by file name if the topic has anything in its Properties > General > Keywords field and are shown by topic title if there are no keywords defined for the topic.
I've confirmed this behavior by adding and removing keywords from topics and watching them alternate between being shown in searches by file name or by topic title.
Obviously, I want topics to be displayed by topic titles in search results no matter if they have keywords assigned or not.
Any idea what would be causing this? Is this a known bug?
Here's some additional information. For this problem to occur, these four conditions must be true:
The topic must have manually added keyword(s) in the Properties > General > Keywords field.
The topic title and the file name must be different.
One must be searching for one of the keyword(s) added in step 1.
Occurs in WebHelp Pro when published to a remote server.
Talks with Adobe today are inconclusive but it appears that this was an unknown bug. Maybe I'll get a free t-shirt or something.

    Hi Rocky,
Log on to the Robohelp Configuration Manager
Uncheck the option "reindex documents at server".
Republish and check. If issue exists try restarting the Apache/Tomcat Server.
    That should work for you.

    Robbie
