Making 640 footage look decent with 1080

Thanks in advance for the help.  I am doing an edit with 1080p footage and for parts of it I want to edit in some old school footage.  This stuff is really old--I ripped it off a DVD and it is 640x480.  My sequence is set to my 1080p footage (that's the what the majority of the edit is going to be) and I have dropped in some 640 clips here and there.  I know it obviously will look pretty poor compared to my 1080 footage, I was just wondering if there were any tricks to making it look any better (less pexilated, slightly more distinguishable, anything....).  Any thoughts?

DVD ought to be 720x480, so I would question the ripping method. Besides the lower 640x480 resolution, the format/codec you ripped to could also be affecting quality. In truth, you can simply copy the .vob files directly from the DVD to your hard drive (if not protected) and edit them right in Premiere, therefore not transcoding to another format that could cause additional quality loss.
Next, what is the intended destination of the final video? Does it HAVE to be 1080 at delivery? For instance if going to YouTube, edit the 1080 footage in a 720p sequence. The HD footage will still look great, and the SD footage is getting "blown up" a lot less, so it will not look as nasty.
If you plan to deliver as DVD, then simply edit everything in an NTSC sequence and don't blow up the SD at all, keep all the SD quality. Many workflow options, depending on needs.
Thanks

  • SD footage looks Bad in timeline and on Export

    Hi there
Let me start by saying that this Forum is amazing, I read through pages of stuff looking for something kind of similar to my question but come accross tons of really useful stuff that I just can't help myself from reading. You guys truly are a mind of knowledge, some of which I haven't a clue about to start with, but I am learning...
    Anyway, on to my query.
I work in Prem Pro CS4 and also use Encore and AME.
All my updates are up to date and I work on a struggling system (dual core. P4. 32 bit Vista Home, 4GB mem, ATI video card (512mb) Its a couple of years old, but handle SD footage ok.
I often get asked to shoot Weddings, Bands & Events (I'm no professional, just a keen ameteur). I shoot this footage mainly in SD (PAL) using a Sony HDRFX1 & and HDR-SR12e.
Okay, so i know there is a difference in Picture clarity at source. the FX1 out performs the SR12 easily, and so this is used for the odd cut away and not the main event.
When I import my footage into PP, all looks OK with the FX1 footage, but the SDR footage is really blurred (out of focus) and washed out. Though playing it back through the Camera or hooked up to a TV, it doesn't look half bad.
So, what am I doing wrong? Why is PP making this footage look horrible and even making the FX1 footage look rather un loveable.
This is the case in Both the Preview window (Highest Quality) and when I export to file or DVD.
I have exported to Verbatim discs (This has made a slight difference) using Encore (using both Dynamic link and exporting as an AVI).
I don't touch transcoding setting, I let Encore sort that out.
I see talk of Codecs - I use mostly the Mpg2 DVD "Main Concept Codec" as my stuff ultimatley ends up on a disc (no other codecs are available to me) - Should i be looking for a better one? - But surely this won't make the footage any clearer in the Preview window in anycase.
Maybe I am Importing it wrongly, as the SDR is a HDD, I just import the usual way... So I can't see i am doing anything wrong there.
I understand that this is a large post and I have so many questions about getting it right. But my main problem is the end product just doesn't quite live up to my expectations, or as it looks on the Camera (or playing from the camera on a 40inch Bravia) before importing in to PP.
I have tried playing the DVDs back through several DVD players and Monitors, it looks virtually the same.
Any suggestions as to improving this would be greatly appreciated.

    No problems Harm
I appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this issue.
Let me go through what I do, hopefully you can pick any holes.
I import from FX1 via capture in PP - usuing the DV preset (No option to change except for HDV) - you referred to "capture in MS DV AVI type2" but I have no option to chage any setting. It's either DV or HDV.
I import the Footage from the SDR via Sony PMB (Picture Motion Bridge) and then import into PP using the double click on project panel method, then set up a series of BINS to make it all very tidy.
I then use 1 sequence and sync up the footage, then just use keyframes to mix in and out where required.
This is all in 720x576 PAL
The quality problems are noticable in the preview window (Set to highest quality)
To test if this is really what I am going to end up with at the end of my project I have exported as an AVI file and played it on my PS3. The footage still looks washed out, Blurry etc.
I have also expoted to a DVD via Encore using Dynamic Link and importing a renederd file and palyed this back on both a Toshiba DVD (upscaler) and PS3. I have also tested it on A Sony Plasma (Though this actually makes it more washed out but a smoother feel) also through a Bravia 30" LCD (this looks the same).
Also played back on PC using VLC, WMP, Nero & Media Player Classic - all give very similar results.
However, playing the files direct from the Camcorder give a different impression. The footage, whilst not as pretty as High Def, is what you expect from a Single Chip handy Cam.
I will say one thing, the footage is clearer when viewed in PMB (Sonys Picture Motion Bridge)

  • Having issues with Compressor and my footage looking pixelated..

Compressed a wedding video through Compressor (from Final Cut Pro). When I have it in DVD Studio Pro and look at the footage, there is a minute or two where the footage looks pixelated and is almost vibrating. There is no issue when I go back and look at it in Final Cut Pro so I know it has to be due to Compressor. Anyone have this problem? Or does anyone know how this can be fixed?

Try increasing bit rate or adding compression markers to that section.

  • My footage looks posterized in FCP playback

im using FCP 7 and have downloaded all the latest software updates.
my footage looks normal when i play it back on my video camera, it's normal when i watch it on quicktime, and even when i export it as a quicktime from FCP. it's also normal when capturing to my computer using the 'log and transfer' window. but when i play/preview the clips from the timeline or directly from the browser window, the footage looks distorted and posterized.
ive tried talking to apple support, ive re-loaded the program, ive tried the program with a different user account, ive trashed preferences and reloaded again... but the footage still looks posterized on FCP.
when i change the view settings, the footage looks normal on the R channel, the G channel and B channel, and even on the RGB + alpha channel, but when i view it using the RGB channel, it looks posterized, making it quite difficult to edit and colour-grade.
any suggestions on how i can fix this problem?

ok, so i dont know what i did. but after checking my colour settings in my system preferences (which i didnt change), FCP has decided to magically work! the footage is playing back normally now. yay!
i really dont know what i did to fix this problem, but it all appears to be fine now. thanks for your help!

  • Timeline Footage Looks terrible in timeline

    Hello!
Im having difficulty in final cut pro, My captured footage looks absolutely terrible on the timeline and when its exported it’s in 4:3 and looks squished, What is the BEST outcome I can setup with this footage, Im a tad naive when it comes to codec’s etc, I literally have two days to get this project completely done and im really struggling on what settings I need as my two source materials are different size’s codecs etc.
I have two sources of captured footage that Im editing between. the first is in:
    DV - PAL, 720 × 576, 4:3, 25 fps, 28.80 Mbps - Audio: DV stereo, 32 kHz, 28.80 Mbps
The second camera’s footage is in:
    .mov Apple Intermediate Codec, 960 × 540, 25 fps, 29.43 Mbps - Audio: 16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
The sequence settings are set to:
    720x576, CCIR 601 / DVPAL (5:4)
    Pixel aspect ratio: PAL - CCIR 601 (720 x 576)
    Field Dominance: Lower
Anamorphic 16:9: off (Tried exporting with this on and off)
Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 (Was defaulted to DV PAL)
I use Final Cut Pro     6.06 on an Old Macbook running OSX 10.5.8
I have my mac plugged into an external TV as a monitor at 1920 x 1080
The footage is being used on a projector for an audience, Either as a DVD or File, It may be used on the web later.
Here is a screen grab of the DV footage in the timeline in final cut pro and opened up the source footage in quicktime side by side.

  • Why does my progressive footage look interlaced after export?

I've searched all the discussions on this topic and my issue seems to be very paticular...
I have imported AVCHD 1080p footage (29.97fps and 1.3333pas) into Premiere Pro CS4 Version 4.2.1. I placed this footage into a AVCHD 1080p anamorphic, 29.97fps, 1.333pas, progressive scan sequence. I exported the sequence out with a H.264 codec, 1440x1080p HQ preset and changed the frame rate to 29.97 and the field order says None (Progressive) and my footage when screened on the computer in a Media Player looks interlaced eventhough the raw footage does not look interlaced at all. I even interpreted the footage for all the clips used in the sequence to conform to No Fields (Progressive Scan) Field Order.
Did I leave something out? What am I doing wrong?
I will say that one clip in the sequence was edited in AE and rendered our as a .MOV with a PNG compression type and it does not look interlaced in the final export from Premiere Pro.

So I figured what the problem was...here at my job the manual that was available for the sony handycam was from an older model. I did not know this. I looked up the actual manual online and it specifies that the recording mode I've been using to capture (HQ HD) is actually shooting AVCHD 1080/60i...so my original footage is really interlaced. Here's where I had my "Ah Ha" moment. I'm currently switching to an iMac from PC and when I viewed the raw footage on a PC in the Media Player, it looked progressive. BUT, when I just played back the raw footage on my Mac, it looked interlaced so I knew something was wrong.
OK! so here I am trying to make 1080/60i footage look like 1080/30p this should be fairly easy correct?
(also, thank you Jim for affirming that my process is in fact correct IF I was using said progressive raw footage which made me question the project at it's beginnings)

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

  • Why do my pics/footage look sharp in my iMovie window but when i export the quality of both turn to garbage? Help!!!

The nightmare that is my iMovie. I just proposed to my girlfriend last month and im trying to make a 7 minute movie about it in iMovie.
I shot my pics and video clips on my iPhone 4s. Unfortunately i forgot to turn HD on. Oh well, the footage looks great anyways. So i imported into iMovie and made my project.
In the iMovie window, the footage looks AMAZING and sharp. But when i export, i lose ALL QUALITY. It's unbearable. First i exported using quicktime and saved it to my desktop because i was having difficulty publishing directly to Youtube. When i watch my qucktime proposal clip, the quality is garbage.
Then i decided to buy the latest iMovie in hopes of it being something an update would resolve. Nope. However, now i was able to publish directly to Youtube. I did this and.....no improvement.
So then i got to thinking that maybe my project had a bug in it. So i slapped together a 40 second test movie. I used 3 of the same pictures and 1 video clip. Again, in the iMovie window it looks INCREDIBLE, but once it's exported it turns to rubbish.
It should be noted that when choosing my file size, the last 2 options which are HD were shaded off. I chose "Large" 720x540.
I did another test whereby I published my short 40 second test to Youtube but it allowed me to select the HD sizes. I did this. Result: still garbage resolution.
Im at my witts end. Are there any iMovie ninjas out there that know where im going wrong?
(someone suggested optimizing the video in iMovie. I tried and it tells me that my content cannot be optimized. So that's that.
    Im depserate!

Please go to my website where I have posted new instructions on working with DV.
This keeps both interlaced fields from FireWire capture through to a DVD. All the lines means no lost quality when editing DV or Digital8.
It also solves the washed-out color problem.

  • Why does progressive footage look interlace?

I shot using 30p with a panisonic dvx100, at 120 shutter speed, with auto irus. While importing, the footage looked great (imported using Adobe pro). Using Adobe pro. the footage looks interlace. Why and how do I fix this problem. I heard that de-interlace reduces the quality but the fact is I should'nt have to, since the footage was shot in progressive. If you know the answer I can really use you're help.

Which version of the software are you using: CS3 or earlier, or CS4? No version includes a pre-built preset for working with DV 30p footage. In CS3 and earlier, you have to set up a custom project, whereas in CS4, you setup a custom sequence. In either case, when you create a new project (<CS3) or sequence (CS4), click the General tab, and change the Field dropdown to "No Fields (Progressive Scan)". You don't need to change anything else, unless, for example, you're working with widescreen footage--change those parameters if necessary. When you're done, save this as a new DV 30p preset.
Now, you may also need to interpret your 30p footage as progressive--I'm not quite sure how 30p capture works in PPro. Select your clips in the bin, and go to File > Interpret Footage. From the pop-up that appears, under Field Order, select Conform To: No Field (Progressive Scan). As I said, I'm not sure if Premiere knows on capture how to interpret 30p footage or not, so this may not be necessary.

  • Compression question: HD footage looks streaky

hello all. I'm having a problem putting HD 1080i PAL footage onto an NTSC SD DVD. The best result I've had so far is with Compressor's HD-DVD-MPEG2-30-minute settings. But still there is streaking. The footage degenerates into horizontal bars when there is significant camera motion. (the same footage looks fine when viewed in final cut.)
I assume this is an interlacing issue. Any idea on fixing it? Does it matter if I convert to NTSC in Compressor or in DVD Studio pro?

    Hi Mike,
When you initially drop the HD clip into the SD sequence, are you seeing the whole image in the frame, or just a blown up middle part? If you are enabling "Auto Scale to Frame Size" in Preferences, or manually on the clip BEFORE scaling, this could be the issue. Right-click on the clip and make sure "Scale to Frame" is off, then scale using Motion effect to suit your needs. This way, you are starting out with all the HD pixels available, so when you scale up, the picture should remain sharp as you are viewing a subset of the larger HD image in your SD "window".
Looking at your sample images again, I think that is the case - it is being scaled down to SD, then blown up again using Scale, and that is where the loss is coming from.

  • DSLR/Timelapse footage looks inverted or like a negative.

I brought a sequence into CC Speed Grade from CC Premiere with both video and DSLR/timelapse footage. The video footage is fine, but the timelapse footage looks like this:
I'm not sure if there's a setting that I need to turn on/off in either programs to make this look normal.

  • Strobe Light Footage Looks Banded

I have a student who shot footage using a strobe light for a music video. The footage looks great until it is captured and played back in FCE where it appears with black bands. How do we get the footage to show as filmed?
Is this an issue with frame rates? Capture settings?
    Any help would be appreciated.

As David said, it's a shutter speed problem. Nothing's going to fix that short of going to After Effects, splitting the fields, and rebuilding them there, but it'll probably kill the strobe effect. How does it look when it plays back? This kind of effect needs to be done with a strobe that's timed to a specific relation to the shutter speed or you get the problem you're seeing. The other way is to do it with a mixture of light so the strobe doesn't completely kill the lighting.

  • Any Effects to make Video footage look dreamy/heaveny

I am trying to see if there is anyway or effect to make some video footage look dreamy or heavenly, it is for a wedding so I want to give it that "mystical" feel. I hope my descriptive words make sense. The footage should almost have a shimmer.
    Thanks!

Hi - One way to go is to use third party plug-ins, another is to learn how to combine and use filters in FCE to achieve the effect you want. Final Cut contains dozens of filters, that when combined can achieve very nice effects, and allow you a lot of control. I actually prefer the filters layering process as it keeps me in control of subtle variations of the effect. Here is one way to make your images a little more romantic. The following demo is done on Final Cut Pro, but as Mr. Wolsky pointed out, most if not all of these filters should be available to you in FCE:
I start by editing my scene to the timeline, and locking the audio:
It is a harshly lit shot of Meg The Dog ( a self portrait) with a cheap Kodak Zi8 camera:
To make it look nice, I edit the exact same scene in the exact same position on the timeline to V2:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz001.jpg!
I double click *on the clip on V2,* which is above our untreated clip, and it opens in the viewer. I select the Filters tab (which is empty).
I then go to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and drag the Gaussian Blur filter to the Filters tab in the Viewer window, and set it to around 20 pixels of blur:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz002.jpg!
This gives the image a nice soft look:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz003.jpg!
but everything is soft - and I just want the highlights to be soft and hold the detail in the non-bright parts of the picture. So I return to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Image Control > Brightness and Contrast and drag the Brightness and Contrast filter to the Filter pane in the viewer, setting the brightness and contrast up slightly:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz004.jpg!
Which makes the bright parts of the picture even brighter:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz005.jpg!
Now I want to combine this with the "normal" image on V1, keeping only the blurred highlights on V2. So back to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Key > Luma Key, and drag the Luma Key to the Filters Pane in the viewer. Note that I switch the Key Mode to Key Out Darker:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz006%20copy.jpg!
Which now gives me nice soft highlights while keeping detail in the scene where the luminance is in the more normal range:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz007.jpg!
To complete the effect, return to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Stylize > Vignette and drag the Vignette filter to the Filters Pan in the viewer:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz008.jpg!
and this gives me a natural Vignetting look which focus attention more to the subject and has a more cinematic look:
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/DiffuseHighlights/Final%20Cut%20ProScreenSna pz009.jpg!

DVD SP is not Flash or Director and it sounds like you using "hotpots" are thinking more along those lines. If someone puts the DVD in a DVD Player they may get rather frustrated having buttons that do not do anything and the navgation is strange
