Making a 1240G access point FAT

Hi,
I run a large wlan. however i have a branch site that requires just 1 cisco accesspoint ( i have a spare 1240g ap )
I would like to make this a standalone AP connected to the lan which can manage client authentication and association. It will be connected to cisco poe switch and the site is run by a cisco router.
the laptops will require static addresses.
whats the easiest way to play around with an test a 1240g ap in fat mode ?
also is there any other new ap`s perhaps a 5ghz or n radio device that can be run solo ?
cheers
Phill

Hi Phil,
Have you tried using H-REAP?

  • Standalone access points(FAT) as mesh APs -1602

    Hi,
We have a group of fat access-points in the network. Do you know whether 1602 series access-points can act as mesh access-points without a controller?
    thanks,

I don't know if they can or not since its not shown in this v7.6 guide:

    Hi Cyril,
    The problem here is that the AP that you received is an LWAPP or Lightweight AP which will only work with the WLC/Unified solution. This is referenced in your first show-ver by these comments;
    AIR-LAP1242AG-E-K9
    LWAPP Image Version 3.0.51.0
You will need to convert the AP back to Autonomous mode. This is most possible
Here is the related info :)
Using a TFTP Server to Return to a Previous Release
Note This section does not apply to Cisco C3201WMIC and Cisco C3201LAP.
Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:
Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.
Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.
Step 3 On the PC where the TFTP server is located, perform these steps:
    a. Disable any software firewall products, such as Windows firewall, ZoneAlarm firewall, McAffee firewall, or others.
    b. Ensure all Windows files are visible. From Windows Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders.
Step 4 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point, and c1250-k9w7-tar.default for a 1250 series access point.
Step 5 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.
Step 6 Disconnect power from the access point.
Step 7 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.
Step 8 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.
Step 9 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.
Step 10 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.

  • Can I disable my Verizon Fios Router Wireless radio, connect it to a switch and use my airport express as my wireless access point connected to an in wall ethernet port?

Here's the deal.  I have a Verizon Fios MI424WR router.  My house has CAT5 throughout the house.  The media panel is located in the garage.  I want to take the Verizon Fios Router and cannot it in the media panel so I can connect a switch to it, that way, all my CAT5 can fire throughout the house. Verizon being Verizon decided to connect the router directly in the office.
Can I go this route (Router in media panel, switch cross connect to it) and use Airport Express, connected to one of the in-wall CAT5 ports in my house and then set it up as my wireless access point to provide wifi to my portable devices (iPad, iPhone, Macbook)?  Is this possible? Will Airport Express comminicate with my verizon router via ethernet in-wall? Do I have to turn off the wireless radio in the Verizon router?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is right, by hard wired I was just making clear wired vs wireless attachment.  AirPort family of devices will only act in a repeater mode with their own family members, not FiOS routers.  they have to be wired to work.
There are some useful docs you can download from Apple, Support, Manuals, Peripherals, AirPort (just follow thos links from the Support button on the top bar):

  • Photosmart c309a can't find access point to Mac Mavericks OS

I've owned probably ten HP printers.  I've been thru five of them in five years and I'm beginning to think I need another brand.   I have a 2010 Mac running Mavericks OS, a Netgear 802.11 wireless router, an Apple Air Port and Norton.  I installed the c309a All-in-One printer last year for the first time.  By spring of this year, the scanner function stopped working.  The other day, the printer wouldn't print.  I think the power plug might've come undone but I'm not sure.  I selected a new print queue as I've done in the past and still no connection with the printer.  I made sure connections were secure.  No luck.  I turned the printer off and restarted.  Still nothing.  I ran diagnostics: "Your HP printer cannot find your access point."  The Network Name (SSID) was not found.  I unplugged everything.  I uninstalled the software, I reinstalled the software.  Each time, the installation process would hang up at the configuration stage and the disc would spin and spin.  I tried connecting via USB to my Mac, but that failed too.  I rebooted my AirPort.  I even tried to manually enter the IP address on the AIO keypad.  No success getting the printer to recognize my Mac.  I succeeded at making an ad hoc connection using the wireless radio with hpsetup as the SSID.  The next day, when I needed to print, the hpsetup network option was unavailable and diagnostics told me the wireless radio wasn't working!  Per online forum suggestion, [edited reset instruction by Moderator]  That trick reset my wireless radio but still the c309a is unable to find my access point and I can't print using my 802.11 wireless.  If I can't solve this problem, I will not buy another HP printer.  I hope someone can help.  Thank you for your time.

    Hi @CluelessPackard ,
I see that you are unable to setup the printer over the wireless network. I would really like to be able to help you resolve this issue.
    Restore the printer defaults.
Go to Setup, Network, Restore Network Defaults.
    Print the Wireless Network Test.
Go to Setup, Network, Advanced Setup, Wireless Network Test.
If it passes, then it isn't a hardware issue with the printer.
If it passes, setup the Adhoc connection again.
Click the Airport on the top right corner on the Mac.
Click on the HP printer from the list. (you won't be on the internet till this procedure is finished)
Add the printer and try and print to see if the wireless is working properly.
Check the Configuration Page for the printer's IP address.
Go to Setup, Network, View Network Settings, Display Wireless Summary.
If you have a valid IP address for the printer then try and access the Embedded Web Server for the printer.
Type the IP address into your web browser's address bar. (Safari)
When setting up the printer, it has to be setup on the main router not the extension.
Go to the network tab along the top of the EWS.
Click on Wireless Setup Wizard along the left hand side to begin configuring the printer.
    Apply your settings.
You have now completed the Wireless configuration.
Click the Airport on the top right corner on the Mac and select your network name.
    Click on the Apple.
Click System Preferences, click the Printers and Scanners icon, then click the + sign, then select the printer from the list, make sure the printer listed beside use: shows the proper printer name, click on the add button. You might have to click on the drop down to select your printer.
    Test the printer.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a wonderful day!
    Thank You.

  • RE: How to secure an access point signal.

    Hi everyone,
I have difficulty making my access point wireless signal secure. My network setup is simple, Modem to Router to Homeplug 1st floor, (secure wireless signal),
2nd floor (secure signal). Problem when comes to 3rd floor, signal too weak, so I place Homeplug to Access Point. (wireless works well but not secured).
Tried calling D-link support but was told that I need to fix static IP address before things can work. What the **** is that? Was told many technical issue about sub-net different, etc. Lastly the setup disc don't work with a Mac. (HaHa).
Thank you all in advance for the solution.

How are you going to connect them?  cat5 or coax?
    cat5 instructions:
Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router?
    coax instructions:
Can I get an ethernet connection in a room with only coax?

  • Need help finding wired access point or range extender?

I currently have a EA6500 in a rather large home.  (4500 sq ft)   The router is on one side of the house and my office is on the other side of the house where wireless does not work well.   I am trying to use Samsung Tablet but the connection keeps dropping here.  when I move the tablet closer it works fine.
Is there a range extender/access point I can purchase to use with the EA6500 where I can connect device via wired ethernet?
If I connect range extender/access point to EA6500 router via wireless the signal in my office appears too weak to be extended properly?  I tried the RE1000 but was not successful.
Please let me know if there is another product to try.
    Thank you.

Was this extender working fine before and you’re trying to reconfigure its settings? In order for this to work properly, the wireless settings for the main router should be synchronized to it. After making sure that the wireless settings are synchronized, place the extender to an area in between the router and where you want to repeat the signal. If you will encounter connection problems after setting up the extender, you can reset the extender and reconfigure the settings. Make sure as well that the firmware is upgraded. For more info about setting up the range extender, you can refer to the following links:  What to do before manually setting up your range extender, Setting up the range expander without the installation CD, Getting to Know the WRE54G v3.

  • WLAN access point "missing" when connection alread...

    Hello,
I have an E63 with version 400.21.013 firmware.  However, I have experienced this problem from day one.  I do not have a data plan but I use WLAN at various locations, and there is a list of access points in the Settings.
I have a home access point configured with WPA2 and I have all the settings saved in the Connection Manager (or is it WLAN Wizard - I don't know).  When the phone is not connected to any AP and I use a program that wants data, it will almost always show the "Home" AP in the list which appears right after "Searching for available access points" is briefly displayed.  "Home" shows up right below Search for WLAN.  There is no problem making the first connection.
However, if the "Home" AP is already in use and I open another program that wants data, at times it will not show my Home AP in the list.  If "Searching for available access points" is only displayed for a split second, "Home" will not be in the list.  Sometimes I can close the program and open it again and if "Searching for available access points" stays on screen for about a second, then "Home" will be on the list and I can connect.  Sometimes I will have to try 3, 4, 5 times, and sometimes it will never "see" the AP unless I disconnect the WLAN and start all over.
Right at this moment, there is no problem.  I can open program after program and connect via my "Home" AP. But it is frustrating when it does happen.  Has anyone seen this or found a remedy?
    Thanks.

Have you tried changing the WLAN channel (i.e. frequency) of your home WLAN access point / router?
Try switching between few different channels (like 1, 3, 6, 9, 11) to see if some channel happens to work more reliably. It is possible that there is some radio interference (neighbouring WLAN networks, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices etc.) on the currently used WLAN channel, causing phone to discover this network less reliably.
In case your WLAN access point / router includes 802.11n support, make sure that your AP's "channel width" is set to a standard 20MHz mode (instead 20/40MHz).
This is a bit long shot suggestion (just guessing), but if switching the WLAN channel related setting on the AP doesn't help then you could also try editing your phone's access point (the one created for you home WLAN network, under Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Access Points) so that your phone should consider this particular WLAN network as an "Hidden SSID" (even if network really isn't hidden) by changing the "Network status" setting from Public to Hidden.

  • Access point not detected

    I have a Palm TX
My wifi works fine, it detects almost any wifi signal, but it wont detect wifi at my university. First time I used it there I could connect, but suddenly I lost connection and since then I don´t even detect the access points. With other devices I have no problem. Any idea what could be the problem?
    Post relates to: Palm TX

The issue may have nothing to do with your device at all. I have a friend who has a WiFi router at their house that I can connect to with any other computer just fine, but my LifeDrive has always struggled. I tried changing all combinations of settings on the LifeDrive and even started changing some of the settings on their router to see what the problem was.
As it turns out, the issue was the mixed broadcast mode of the Linksys router. In the default mixed mode (which broadcasts B, G and N) the LifeDrive simply will not connect. If the mixed mode is reduced to just B and G the life Drive connects effortlessly and instantaneously.
So the moral of the story is: These older Palm devices simply do not connect well to certain routers and certain broadcast modes. And yet other routers offering the same mixed B, G and N broadcasts will connect just fine. In the places where you don't have access to be able to configure the routers that are making the broadcasts, you are probably SOL.

  • Should I stack access points in a building?

There are two schools of thought.  We used to stack access points when we had identical floors of a multistory building.  Then along came the theory that you should not stack them - you should stagger locations when floors are the same.
How does that affect location based surveying when all the books state that you should start in the four corners and work your way in?  Theoretically, the corners of the buildings are all stacked.
What's the latest school of thought?  We are going to be deploying voice and tags later on.
    Thanks in advance.

Staggering APs can potentially when help with small area of low coverage could be covered by an AP on an adjacent floor rather than adding another AP on the deficient floor. Perhaps some designs are done to minimize the # of APs, and cross floor coverage is relied on to really minimize the hardware count (not worth it in most cases IMHO).
What if the building floor plan works out just right for AP spacing and you can get a great design and then duplicate it for the rest of the floors (stacking). Is it worth skewing your great layout (hence making a not as great layout) on every second floor just so you can stagger instead of stack? Probably not.
Sometimes the great layout is (for example) a triangle. Well, every floor could be a triangle just inverted every second floor and you get both your great layout and staggering.
Most of my staggering potential sites are hotels. If APs are getting done in the hallway, then sometimes staggering is suitable, sometimes not just depending on how the design works out. If the APs are in the rooms, then staggering is usually easily done without compromise. Personally I'm not willing to create a notable area of poor coverage one one floor just so I can stagger.

  • E6 - Internet Access point issue

OK... Here's my first portential bug identification from Nokia E6.
I use mFE for my office email.  I have Home WLAN as Priority 1 and EGPRS as Priority 2 as Internet Access pointsand have the Connectivity settings option Switch to WLAN set for "Known WLANs only".
Now often I see the EGPRS is active despite I have strong WLAN signal at my home.
Grrr... my data charges will go high because of this....
Does any other Nokia E6 user face similar issue?

    @ Since_6110,
If so, the network packet data connection is being used by another application
So under Connectivity > Settings > Destinations you have a destination called "Internet" (the default name for the first destination), and it has your home WLAN as Priority: 1 and your network provider's packet data at Priority: 2 ?  YES
And in MfE under Advance Settings, the Access point specified is "Internet" (or the same Destination mentioned above)? YES

  • Cisco Security Advisory: Access Point Memory Exhaustion from ARP Attacks

I recieved this Cisco Advisory e-mail today. I have 1200 access points that I upgraded yesterday to 12.3(7)JA2, in which this problem was corrected. In the advisory it states to upgrade to this software release and to make a configuration change on each radio interface. I made this change on Dot11Radio0 interface and it took. I have 2 more interfaces ( Dot11Radio0.2 and Dot11Radio0.75) in which I get an error when I try to make this configuration change. I don't quite understand these interfaces, so I would like to know if I really need to make this change on the other 2 interfaces or is making the change on the 1st one enough. Any information is certainly appreciated. Thanks, Laurie Coles

Since you have subinterfaces configured, you are apparently using
VLANs on your APs. The ARP table is only relevant for the VLAN
with the management IF, that is the native VLAN.
For all other VLANs it's simply bridging, therefore no ARP table,
and therefore this vulnerability doesn't apply here.
So your only concern should be the native VLAN, and unless you
need wireless access for managing your APs the best way for
securing this would be to not configure a SSID for this VLAN.
Then the only access to the AP would be over the Ethernet-IF.
The security advisory is more important for APs configured
without VLANs where wireless clients and the management IF
of the AP are in the same (W)LAN.

  • Netgear RangeMax DGND3000 as Access point?

Can my Netgear DGND3300 function as a wireless access point on my Verizon FIOS network? My FIOS modem/router is a MI424WR-GEN2.
If the answer is yes, what settings do I need to make this seemless? Ideally, I want it on the same SSID so the tablets and laptops will just have continuous coverage throughout my house. The goal is to extend coverage since the verizon router is in the basement. I have coax throughout the house so I can strategically place the netgear.
Could it also be used to set up a guest network like when I had it for DSL?

As the guy on the Netgear forum stated last July, the guest network won't work if you set up the netgear as an ap only
To make it work you need the netgear router to be issuing dhcp leases.
You could do that by making the netgear router a different subnet  I.E. connect a lan port of the actiontec to the wan port of the netgear - the downside of this is that it makes it difficult for devices on the actiontec sub-net to access devices on the netgear subnet.
Otherwise maybe it's possible to disable the dhcp server on the actiontec and enable it on the netgear instead,  might be worth trying
I never bothered.  I decided the fios router was so bad that I just use it to control the stb's and built my own subnets on my own routers below it.
