Making a backup to be used on a different Mac

Hey there. I am just about to sell my iMac 20" and then purchase a Powermac G5. However, I have a ton of personal files (music, pictures, videos) as well as a ton of programs for personal and work use (Photshop, After Effects, etc.) Now, backing up my music and pictures and stuff is easy enough. However, I have a bunch of plug-ins for After Effects and other programs that will be a real pain get a download link and serial codes from their providers. I already have a blank 250GB external HD that is compatible with my Mac. The only problem is to go about backing everything up. I would like to be able to back everything up and then transfer it to my new Powermac and use it without having to re-install anything or re-enter any activation codes. Can anyone give me directions on how to do this? It is very urgent as I will be sending the iMac out tomorrow evening.

You are going from an Intel iMac to a PowerPC "Power Mac G5"? It's not a new +Mac Pro+ ?
I'll assume (until you say otherwise) that the answer is YES, and it's not a Mac Pro but the older Power Mac G5 (because that's what you wrote).
If the iMac has Leopard, you can do the following.
Leopard is universal. That means both Intel and PowerPC Macs can boot the same system. This is different from Tiger, which had a different builds for Intel and PowerPC.
So if you have this external hard drive and it has a FireWire interface (not just USB 2.0), you can clone your internal hard drive volume from the iMac to the external drive, connect the external drive to the Power Mac G5, and boot the Power Mac G5 off the external drive +as is+.
Here are some details:
Since PowerPC Macs can only boot from a drive with +Partition Map Scheme+ of +Apple Partition Map+, you need to partition the external drive accordingly using Disk Utility. Intel Macs use +GUID Partition Table+ as the default +Partition Map Scheme+, but they can also use +Apple Partition Map+ just fine.
You can do the cloning process using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, two free utilities that specialize in this operation to exactly duplicate one volume to another.
Once the clone is created, you can do a test startup from the external drive using the iMac. Although Intel Macs use +GUID Partition Table+ by default, they can still boot drives that use +Apple Partition Map+.
Once the external drive is attached to the Power Mac G5, you should be able to set System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane to boot from the external drive (as long as it is FireWire). Then you can transfer files to the internal drive, at your leisure. If the Power Mac G5 boots and works acceptably from the clone of iMac's startup volume, you can even clone it to the Power Mac G5's internal drive. Since the Power Mac G5 has two internal bays, if it has two drives, you can clone it to one of the internal drives and keep the existing system on the other drive. Although you can just boot off the external drive indefinitely, the Power Mac G5 will operate faster using the internal SATA connection.

  • Can 1 iPhoto library (on an external drive) be used on 2 different Macs?

    I want to keep my iPhoto library only on my Time Capsule. But I would like all the Macs in my house to be able to use the same library. *I'm not talking about sharing.* I would like it if I could add photo's from my Mac mini and photos from my iMac to the same single library. Is this possible?

    Yes it is possible, but - and this is a rather large one - using iPhoto with a wireless connection to the Library is very risky. Wireless connections have a lot of small drop outs - it’s just part and parcel of wireless networking. If one such dropout occurs while the app is writing to the DB, then the database file will be corrupted. I simply would not recommend using the app in that configuration.

  • Making my Canvio Connect read/write on two different macs

    I bought the Canvio Connect, and it works fine.  I bought it for my laptop, but want to plug and write to it on my iMac.  But when I plug it into my iMac, it's read only.  Is there an easy way around this or am i stuck with read on one machine and read/write on another?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Did you reformat your ext HDD before you used it? because it says on their website that for this canvio connect:
    Toshiba Canvio® Connect Portable Drives are preformatted NTFS for Windows® 8, 7, and Windows® XP. Plus, the drive comes with a NTFS driver for Mac® allowing you to store and access files from the PC and Mac® without reformatting.

  • Any recommendations on external hard drive for making bootable backup?

    Hello,
    I wish to make a bootable backup of my MBP before upgrading to Mavericks.
    Are there any external hard drives that are better suited for making bootable backups? I use a WD for making Time Machine backups but I have read that WD is not ideal for making a bootable back up - is this correct...?
    Thanks,

  • Using a different .Mac account in iPhoto

    We have a .Mac family pack. My wife and I each have a personal account and we would like to use a completely different .Mac account to post our web galleries, but I don't want to have to create a new user on my Mac just to use iPhoto. Is there a way that iPhoto can use a different .Mac account than the one associated with my user account on my computer to publish galleries?
    Thanks,

  • TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?

    Hi to all!
    I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.
    I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.
    I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:
    Drive:
    a
    1 TB,
    Thunderbolt,
    Buffalo
    b
    2 TB/ FW
    LaCie
    c
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    d
    3 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    e
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate backup
    [to be purchased]
    f
    500 GB, internal
    Macintosh HD
    Partitions
    1
    1
    1
    2
    1
    USAGE:
    editing videos, one
    active project at a time
    mainly for camera
    archives, music files,
    FCP events, projects
    and exported movies
    same as the LaCie,
    as a backup of data
    intend to have 2
    partitions of 1.5 TB each;
    one partition for personal
    data and the other partition
    to back up data on the
    Thunderbolt [current project]
    intend to use this for
    TM back up of my
    Mac's internal HD
    applications, documents etc.
    backed up by:
    one partition of 'd'
    by the 2 TB Seagate
    backup 'e'
    I would like to know whether I could do these things:
    Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?
    Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?
    Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.

    EXT. DRIVES:
    a
    1 TB
    Thunderbolt
    b
    2 TB/FW
    [LaCie]
    c
    2 TB/ USB
    [Seagate]
    d
    3 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    e
    2 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    USAGE:
    scratch disk
    [planning to have
    only one active
    project at a time]
    camera footage
    FCPX events, projects
    and completed movies
    Same as the LaCie,
    as it's backup
    To be used as TM
    backup for my Mac's
    internal and also to
    the scratch disk.
    Planning to have it in
    2 partitions: to have
    a 'secondary' copy of
    my Mac's IHD on one
    partition and to have
    personal 'net retrievable'
    data on the other partition.
    'MY
    OBSERVATIONS'
    my projects are usually
    less than 10 minutes
    and hence I trust that
    work would be fast and in
    case of drive failure, I
    would be losing only
    one project.
    I am importing camera footage
    primarily into this drive and
    being FW, data transfer is
    fast.
    Am manually copying
    files from the LaCie
    onto this.
    This drive is not a
    brand new one, but
    has been given to me
    by the company's
    agent as a replacement
    to my earlier 2 TB drive
    which had failed.Hope
    this also will not fail!
    Because of the 'uncertain'
    performance of the
    3 TB Seagate, I intend
    to have a copy of my
    Mac's IHD in one
    partition. I intend to place only
    such data upon the other
    partition that I will not be
    greatly affected should the
    drive fail.
    If you can analyse this plan and give your insight upon this matter, I will be immensely happy.
    Further, if this proposed use of the 3 TB Seagate is okay with you, I need to know how to remove the Thunderbolt from doing it's temporary role of TM backup and how to coronate the 3TB Seagate as its successor.
    FYI, I would be switching off TM from functioning whenever I am editing video; I would be switching it on only after a full editing session.
    Another question on my mind is this: do I need to partition the drive 'e' at all?

    With TSM adware removal tool I was able to remove unknown software that was making ads pop up when using Safari. So the y don't pop up anymore. The problem now is that when I open safari It is still downloading websites and after awhile it freezes the browser. I have to constantly go to Safari Preferences to remove them and then the browser will start working again. What can I do to stop this?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    BACKUP AND RECOVERY USING RMAN
    ==============================
    1. Backup Method
    1.1 backing up in noarchivelog mode
    SVRMGR> shutdown;
    SVRMGR> startup mount
    rman을 가동시킨 후 다음을 수행
    run {
    # backup the database to disk
    allocate channel dev1 type disk;
    backup (database format '/oracle/backups/bp_%s_%p'); }
    1.2 Backing up databases and tablespaces in archivelog mode >
    - database 단위 backup script
    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup skip offline (database format '/oracle/backups/%d_%u');
    release channel dev1;
    - tablespace 단위 backup script
    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type disk;
    backup
    (tablespace system,tbs_1,tbs_2,tbs_3,tbs_4,tbs_5
    format '/oracle/backups/bp_%s_%p');
    - datafile 단위 backup script
    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type disk;
    backup
    (datafile '?/dbs/t_dbs1.f'
    format '/oracle/backups/%d_%u');
    - control file backup script
    control file은 system datafile의 첫번째 화일을 백업받을 때 백업되며 다음과
    같은 방법으로도 백업받을 수 있다.
    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup
    (tablespace tbs_5 include current controlfile
    format '%d_%u');
    - archived logs backup script

    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type disk;
    copy datafile '?/dbs/tbs_01.f/dbs/tbs_01.f' to '?/copy/temp3.f';
    - incremental backups
    새로운 데이타화일이 추가되거나 테이블스페이스가 추가된다면 level 0의 backup을
    반드시 수행한다.
    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup incremental level 0
    (database
    format '%d_%u');
    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type 'sbt_tape';
    backup incremental level 1
    (database
    format '&d_%u');
    2. Recovery Method
    - tablespace recovery
    run {
    allocate channel dev1 type disk;
    allocate channel dev2 type 'sbt_tape';
    sql "alter tablespace tbs_1 offline immediate" ;
    set newname for datafile 'disk7/oracle/tbs11.f'

    Hi Alok,
    why there is a need for standby here? you mean to say standby db?
    what i exactly need is , whether i will be making use of archivelogs which are all archived during that backup period (in mount stage) after some days, if i face any problem with the PRODUCTION Database..

    How can I restore my data from iCal? I didn't make any backup, but I use  time machine with an external HD. I deleted iCal when I deleted my gmail account. I have tried to restore, but I can only restore the iCal software and not the data.

    So what is your question?
    If you forgot your encryption password:
    Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
    If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.
    The above comes from here:

    how do I access my iphoto library on time machine backup external drive using Lion, originally saved off old computer and system.  It's not letting me open the folder???

    Once again here's how to restore an iPhoto Library from Time Machine:

  • If Iq backup my iPhone using my icloud can someone else using the same Apple ID as me back up their iPhone to icloud?

    If Iq backup my iPhone using my icloud can someone else using the same Apple ID as me back up their iPhone to icloud?

    If they sign into your iCloud account with your ID, their iCloud backup would then be in your account.   However, they would also be sharing your iCloud account and any data they sync with the account (contacts, calendars, etc.) will be merged with yours and the merged list will appear on both phones.  They would also be able to access your email account and their photo stream photos would be merged with yours (as you would be sharing the same photo stream).  Furthermore, if they are using iOS 7 and turn on Find My iPhone while signed into your account, their phone will require your iCloud ID and password in order to be turn off Find My iPhone, sign out of iCloud or erase and reactivate their phone.
    Unless you wish to share all this data, and have the other person's data merged with yours you should do this.  (iCloud accounts are really designed to be used by a single person.)

  • If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use?

    Hello,
    I have a database 11.1.0.7 with 8TB. Block change tracking is enabled.
    At the weekend I take level 0 backup and during the week level 1 cumulative.
    For some weeks the level 0 backup is failing, so I only have level 1 cumulative backups taken every week day with a 4 weeks old level 0 backup.
    If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use? Will it be the last level 0 backup with the last level 1 cumulative?
    I ask this because grid crontrol tells me that the recent level 1 backups input size is smaller than last week level 1 backups and in between I dont have any level 0 sucessfull backups. Shouldn't the input size of level 1 cumulative increase until the next level 0 backup ?
    The grid reports:
    Backup Name Status Start Time Time Taken Type Output Devices Input Size Output Size Output Rate (Per Sec)

    From http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmvalid.htm
    Validating Backups Before Restoring Them
    You can run RESTORE ... VALIDATE to test whether RMAN can restore a specific file or set of files from a backup. RMAN chooses which backups to use.
    The database must be mounted or open for this command. You do not have to take datafiles offline when validating the restore of datafiles, because validation of backups of the datafiles only reads the backups and does not affect the production datafiles.
    When validating files on disk or tape, RMAN reads all blocks in the backup piece or image copy. RMAN also validates offsite backups. The validation is identical to a real restore operation except that RMAN does not write output files.
    You can monitor what RESTORE VALIDATE does.
    Make precautions, so you do not damage the production DB!!!

    What is Airport Utility and why do I need to access Airport witeless devices in order to backup my iMac using Time Machine...HELP!!! PLEASE??

    AirPort Utility is required to configure an Apple AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
    Time Machine can use a Time Capsule or a locally connected volume. You only need to use AirPort Utility if you are using a Time Capsule.

    It's likely that your backup is corrupt. Try deleting the backup, then right click on the name of the phone in iTunes and choose "back up". To delete go to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Highlight and delete the most recent backup. Note that sometimes deleting this way leaves some garbage around that can still interfere with a new backup, so you should verify that the backup folder is empty.

    The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
    iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP:  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7:  \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

    Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.
