Making a bootable back up of OS X 10.2.8

hi. im trying to help my sister to upgrade to 10.4 from 10.2.8 on an original eMac. i have a Tiger install DVD, which i'm hoping will go swimmingly and make this post not needed.
however, i would like to have a backup of the 10.2.8 system in case i have a problem or the system can't handle Tiger and I have to revert.
anyone know a good way of doing this, preferably all with OS X and not any 3rd party apps that i'd have to pay for?
right now i'm making a sparse image to an external HDD, will i be able to restore the old system with this?
or if Tiger installs fine, will i be able to archive and install with the Jaguar disc to go back to 10.2?
thanks

If the external hard disk drive is enclosed in a FireWire box with self-powered circuitry
and that, being out of necessity, an Oxford-type chipset, then you may be able to boot
OS X, clone and reinstall (re-clone) backup and so on from there to a computer & back.
You could probably use +an older version+ of Bombich's *Carbon Copy Cloner* available
from the CCC site's older version page: http://www.bombich.com/software/files/ +and note+
+the file .dmg there named cccloner-2.3.dmg+ - that's the suggested version for 10.2+10.3.
{ For newer OS X versions, see main CCC site: http://www.bombich.com/index.html }
{Also, the Disk Utility in the Mac OS X can be used to make a Disk Image, and that can be
of the system, & it is possible to restore from this kind of system .dmg. - I have not done it.}
If the externally enclosed drive in FireWire housing is formatted correctly for Mac OS X
and is partitioned, you could put a different OS X version and its Apps on one partition
and another OS X version and its Apps on another. Some applications won't work in a
later version OS, and some system version specific files should never be mixed up.
There also may be an +older version+ of a disk interface utility such as OnyX by Titanium
Software, that can help keep things in running order in several ways. +A specific link for+
+OnyX Jaguar 10.2.x only+: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/joel.barriere/dl/102/OnyX_1.3.1.dmg.gz
{ Later versions, for newer OS X systems: http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html }
*If the computer you intend on attempting to upgrade to Tiger 10.4.x is not ready for the newer*
*OS X & the minimum hardware specifications, then it may be well to learn of those limits first.*

from the Model and series specifications, to see if they are capable of running the later OS.

  • Help with saving OSX as a bootable back-up

    Hi,
I want to back up only my os as a bootable back-up. I have Super_Duper and a 250G HD. I just don't know which file(s) to tell SD to save for a back-up. Is is just the system folder? or are there other files that need to be saved as well. Apparently I can instruct the program to choose specific files.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    J Coletta:
It is difficult to make suggestions when you have not told us what you want to accomplish. Here are some suggestions that may or may not be appropriate to your needs:
    1. Format external HDD and create one partition approximately the size of your internal HDD for backup/cloning. (See Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery for suggestions). You can create whatever other partitions you need. For step-by-step directions for formatting and partitioning please post back.
    2. Use SuperDuper to clone the entire HDD to the backup partition (same size as HDD).
    3. If you have a registered copy of SuperDuper you can do SmartUpdates, which take a small fraction of the time it takes to make a full clone.
    4. Other partitions can be used for projects, archiving and stuff.
Your backup partition will be bootable, so you can use it as an emergency drive, or to run tests, diagnostics and repairs on the intenal HDD.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Making a bootable dics after Lion has been installed

How do I make a bootable dics of the Lions after I have installed it on my system. I could not fine a .dmg file anywhere or a install Mac OSX 7 app.

Apparently, you failed to save a copy of the install app to another location and the installer blew itself away after installing, which is normal behavior. You'll have to DL the installer again. When that's finished, see http://macnix.blogspot.com/2011/07/make-bootable-mac-os-x-lion-usb-flash.html for details on making a bootable disc.

  • How do you create a bootable back up of the hard drive w/ disk utility?

I think it's pretty incredible that the most basic of basic topics, how to create a back up of your hard drive using the native software Disc utility, is nowhwere to be found. I tried searching "create bootable back up" and amazingly enough nothing comes up. Anyway.... can anybody let me in on this top secret information, I would really appreciate it. Once again the objective is to make a bootable clone of my hard drive onto an external disk. Thanks for the help,
    -BK

Are you saying I could still use Disk Utility's Restore function to clone a 90GB startup drive, that had 40GBs used, to a clean 60GB backup drive?
Correct. The size of the source drive is completely irrelevant – as Kappy is saying, it's just the size of the data to be copied that counts. (An explanation that some people like is that "empty space is not copied").
I've always used a dedicated backup drive that was larger than my startup drive
Nothing 'wrong' with that, but unnecessary. Same size would be large enough for any future possibility. Theoretically, if you had a 250GB internal drive but knew that you would never have more than 20GB of data on it, a 40GB backup drive would be considerably more than sufficient (a bit of a silly example, but true). Other considerations: 1. you already know about the 15% free space recommendation, and 2. with drives, 'bigger' is nearly always a better investment for the future. I would always advise someone about to buy a drive to multiply the size they were thinking of by at least 4.
        always reformatted and zeroed it
Again not 'wrong', but overkill. A simple 'erase' (2 seconds) would suffice – erased is 'clean' enough. Consider that those, like myself, who do "synchronized" backups (copying only added or changed items for the saving of time) NEVER erase the target, or just once in a blue moon. If your backup drive is stationary on your desk the chances of it developing another bad block are close to nil. The time when a re-zeroing (mapping out of bad blocks) becomes imperative is immediately after the cat knocked the drive onto the floor! We are in the main talking here about a software solution (the mapping) of a hardware problem, physical imperfections on the surface of the disk.
    =-=-=-=-
Regarding 'other stuff' on the backup/target drive, our suggestion for CCC users is:
[Note that this is NOT for the situation where the target is to be erased every time.]
For your first cloning you should find a temporary home for that stuff on the external drive so that you can prepare the drive correctly [instructions…] After that you can move that 'other stuff' back onto the external drive.
If you absolutely cannot find the needed 'temporary home' you can proceed anyway but you must take responsibilty for any consequences due to inadequate preparation of the drive (e.g. not 'zeroing' it to map out any bad blocks) – you should be OK but it is a question of luck. For subsequent clones, and for this first one if you wish to proceed, you do not need to move that 'other stuff' if you do as follows…
You have to ensure that the clone will not interfere with that other stuff. Put all that 'other stuff' into a folder (with sub-folders as you desire) on the target (at root level, i.e. what you see when you dbl-click on the disk icon) and give that folder a unique name, i.e. a name which you know you will never use on your source drive. If you did have such a folder on the source the cloning would make the folder on the source overwrite the one on the clone, so choose the name with some thought. (How about: "Nevercall_methis"? ;=))
A dedicated backup drive is, beyond doubt, to be highly recommended as the best arrangement. 'Other stuff' on that drive is possible, easily 'do-able', but is often the cause of complications at some stage. (Buy another drive! ;=)).
"Buy another drive" is not just me being facetious. If you data is vital to you, you should have TWO backups on different drives. Consider this: while you are cloning/backing up, you actually have NO backup – a power outage and all, source and backup, could be lost at the same time – unlikely but not impossible. I do hate to be a harbinger of gloom, but…
    Happy cloning!  ;=)

  • Advice On Bootable Backing Up

    Hi Al,
I have a MBP C2D 2.2 on Tiger 10.4.11 with a 120GB Hard Drive. I aim to get SuperDuper as I have read it is a great back up solution. I would like then to ask if I can use my Western Digital Passport external hard drive to make a 'Bootable Back-Up" using SuperDuper as it only allows for a USB connection? As My MBP HD is only 120GB should I 'partition' my external WD HD for the me amount? I plan on using Fusions or Parallels in the future and would like to use the WD HD to store both Mac & Windows stuff but keep them separately in case I get any nasties via windows that won't then mess up my entire computer or external Hard Drive. How should I then format the WD HD accordingly?
    Thank You,
    SuaveBhav!

    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Start up disk full flashing file question mark after bootable back up attem

My MacBook Pro flashes a file with a question mark after a bootable back up attempt. Any help or suggestions please. Tried Disk Warrior. PRAM reset, disk utility. Hard drive is working.
    Thanks,
    Kim
PS. Disk Warrior program warns of "not enough space" when trying to create a new directory.

    Hi kbtb,
Is all the data on the drive backed up? What if you wipe the drive and reinstall a fresh OS, I'd be curious if that works. It sounds like the startup error is indicative of a data directory corruption problem. How much free space is on the HD?

  • Hints for making a bootable partition on extra hard disk

Hi all - I hope that my query is unique enough to merit being ranked as a question.
I have a G4 that I bought from a friend. Its original HD was a SCSI, and I just had a larger ATA drive installed, while keeping the SCSI. The ATA is now my main startup drive. I have it divided into three partitions - one is my main startup & system & applications, the other for storage, and the third for OS 9.2. I have just upgraded to MacOS 10.4, with the latest updates.
I have backed up all the data on the SCSI and deleted all the files on it. The SCSI HD has three partitions that I want to convert into two ( or maybe just one, depending on your advice ).
I would like to have one of the SCSI partitions be bootable with 10.4, as an emergency/backup startup disk. The other partition I want for media data storage - graphics and music, maybe video.
    My questions:
    1. What file system should I use? The ATA drive is using "Journaled HFS+", what would determine if I should use another type for the SCSI partitions?
    2. Do I need two partitions? In a quick reading of the discussions, it seems that some folks think that, unless you're running a different operating system in each partition, there is little other reason for partitioning a hard drive.
    3. Do I use my 10.4 installer DVD to make the bootable SCSI partition? Or are there ways that are more apt for what I want to do?
    Thanks for reading this far!
    G4 AGP Graphics M5183   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You might need to give more info on the two HD's.
    size?
Also, how old is the SCSI? Drives tend to start
acting crazy at 5 or 6 years old.
The SCSI drive is the original, so it's probably close to 7 years old. It's an 18GB Seagate ST318203LW. The new ATA is a 160GB Hitachi HDT722516DLAT80 (usable storage is actually 128GB).
You probably had to partition the new ATA drive
because your G4 doesn't recognize drives sizes larger
    than 128gb.
The ATA is partitioned the way it is because I had the SCSI partitioned in a similar manner - one 10.3 partition, one storage partition, and one 9.2 partition. I had the MAc service shop do a clone from the SCSI to the ATA, with the only difference being that the partitions are bigger. There are no plans to repartition the ATA.
I want to repartition the SCSI and install a backup startup capability, while alos using the SCSI for media data storage - graphics and music, maybe video. Since the SCSI drive is old, I'll make sure they're noncritical files.

  • Making a bootable OS 9 CD

    Hi.
Is it possible to make back-up bootable CDs of other operating systems and utilities on the Mini using only the OS X software?
    Thanks,
    Lin

So long as it is not copy - protected, yes. Use DiskUtility to make an image of the CD.
File > New > New image from Device, then choose your CD. Make sure you set the format to CD/DVD Master. When it's done, it will show up in the left panel of DiskUtility. Click on its icon and then click the burn icon.

  • PB Ti 1.0 Ghz, Making a complete back-up copy of HD to a 64GB SSD HD 2 boot

Ok, I'm a newbie to the whole world of macs. I just recently got my hands on an awesome running PB titanium 1.0 Ghz. I am finally making the switch from a PC to a Mac. So I have this PB and I have a Transcend 64GB SSD (a solid state Multi Level Cell IDE hard drive) I got the hard drive on ebay for $102 bucks a week ago.
Anyhoo, my question for anybody who can help me out. (I totally appreciate the help in advance) I have the ide to usb connector for it and would like to make an exact carbon copy of the internal hard drive to this drive via USB. I tried once doing this myself using the Super Duper program. I copied the whole drive to the new one (took almost 7 hours to complete) but upon installing the new hard drive and booting up I got the folder with the question mark on it. Can somebody explain to me in detail what I need to do to not only make a carbon copy of the existing hard drive but also make it possible for the new drive to boot on it's own once installed ? Am I using the right program to do this ? If somebody has done this before please let me know what type of settings I need to enter in order for this new drive to boot on it's own. Your help once again will be most greatly appreciated !!
I'm really just experimenting with this PB for now as far as the new drive goes. I figured that I would try to use this SSD drive if possible in it, basically thinking that since it is solid state (No moving parts inside of drive) that it would not only speed this thing up a bit but also make the battery last a bit longer. I don't know exactly what type of speed increase I might see or how much longer battery time I would get from it but I figured for the 102 bucks I got the drive for that this would be a great drive to install into this PB. If I can't figure out a way to use it in my PB then I guess I'll have to resort back to what I didn't want to do, basically putting XP Pro on it and using it in my Acer labtop just to see the speed increase or whatever else it may have to offer.
The main thing about using this SSD drive in my PB is really just knowing I don't ever have to worry about the hard drive itself going Kaput on me as far as it having no moving parts inside, that this hard drive will last for years and years to come, and of course with the awesome mac os tiger operating system on it, I figured that using this HD in the PB first would be my best bet of getting the most out of it. Ok, enough of my writings cause I can just keep going and going. anyhoo, anybody that can help me out once again will be more than greatly appreciated. Thanx again for the reply from anybody who can help me, Jason

Hey Eww, I have now secure erased the drive and went back into disk utility to re-format the drive. I reformatted the drive to Mac Os Extended, and opted out of the journal part of it all, as upon reading other posts about this, that I believe it really only applies to servers or back-up from a power outage or hardware failure, which hopefully I don't have to worry about anything of the latter, basically why I'm trying to use this drive in the first place.
Now that I see that I am on my third try, I am definitely going to go and get me one of those firewire to ide converters, probably from micro center tomorrow, as I know I'll probably have more use for it than I thought I would have imagined. I will make sure that it does have the oxford chipset in it or I won't buy it from there and just turn to ebay to get it from the guy you passed me the link on.
I wrote the guy to the link u posted. The ebay item had ended already but he sent me an email to his online store directly, so thank you again for the link, very much appreciated.
I am in the middle of trying this out one more time, hopefully the third time is a charm and if I am not successful this time I am just going to take everything in to a local computer store that works on macs and just pay them to do it. From what I have read about this SSD multi level cell HD, that I should not install an operating system on it from discs, I take it because of the properties of the drive itself. If this is not correct in your opinion please let me know, I am always open to options on how to make this successful.
This seems to be such an easy task to do, but just like life, somehow, someway, it just finds a way to be difficult. I would say it's just my luck but I don't even go that route anymore. So yeah, I am going to give this one more try and if once again I am not successful I will call it quits and just pay somebody else to do it not the route I wanted to go since it seems like such an easy task but if I do have to go that route I hope they don't try to sock it to me, or I'll probably just end up leaving the original drive in it and go back to what I do know how to do, going back to my dang windows pc and formatting it to use in my pc based labtop. wish me luck, as I see already I'm going to need alot of it.
Thanx again for all your help, I will let you know of the outcome this time around. ttyl, Jason

  • Need some info on bootable back-up's

    Aloha:
I have already posted this elsewhere and got one reply, but could use a few more to help me decide just where to go on this.
I am using Silverkeeper to back up my system on a bootable external hard drive. My hard drive just went south on me and somehow (or maybe it was just coincidental) really managed to screw up my system. Not only that I lost 1000's of iPhotos. Managed to find some of those in other places.
But anyway I need another external that's bootable drive. What should I get?
    Thanks
    Dan Page
    Hawaii

Hi! Unless you need eSata I would get THIS external case. With it's OX 911 chipset it will be bootable. Choose your own HD and you're good to go with ata drives. If you need a big drive or want to use a sata drive I'd go with THIS one. Tom

  • Making a bootable copy of Lion from pre-installed OS on new iMac

How do I make a bootable copy of Lion from a new iMac that had Lion pre-nstalled at purchase? I would like to create a back up copy on an external drive for 2 reasons. First, I want to have an external copy in case there is an issue on the iMac in the future. Second, I would like to upgrade my Mac Book Pro which is currently running 10.5.8 to Lion. I do not want to purchase a flash drive copy of Lion from Apple after spending the money to buy a new iMac.
I could use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable copy of my iMac, and afterwards install the copy on the Mac Book Pro. This would take much more time, and I still wouldn't have a back up copy of Lion on an external drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, in advance.
    Charlie

FWIW,  you need both Snow Leopard ($20 USD) and Lion ($30 USD) to upgrade the MBP. Both are only available from Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. Snow Leopard comes on a DVD, but for Lion, you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL it from the Mac Apple Store after installing SL and updating to 10.6.6+.  If you're outside the US, then try the appropriate international number.
If you go that route, quit the installer after it DLs and save a copy to a safe place, since the ill-designed installer deletes itself during the installation process, necessitating wasting resources if you need to reinstall or restore. With a saved copy, you can reinstall w/o wasting any time, bandwidth, or electricity. The Lion installer is 3.6+ GB, which takes over an hour to DL with a high-speed connection at 10 Mbps.

  • Airport Time capsule has been making its first back up for 3 days and still going

Been having problems with airport time capsule (its a 2TB model my iMac is 1TB), when first used it backed up OK then wouldn't back up after a few months operation. Spoke to support on Thursday 3 days ago, they got me to delete disc from airport utility and had me check all my connections were correct then started a new first backup again.
All seemed to be ok as it showed there were 840 gb to back up. so slowly this reduced friday night to 300 gb remaining. Then Saturday it showed 150 GB of 350 GB now today it is showing 485 Gb of 534 GB but as the target figure keeps increasing just checked now it shows 535 GB!
I have entered time machine to see what is there and all file seem to have copied across but haven't checked then individually. There is only one TM folder saying Today now, so it is still on the first back up.
The other strange thing the available space on the TC is now showing 864 GB free of 2TB how can this be if my imac has only 1TB!

If you still have issues.. and you well might.. i recommend you start over..
Unplug the TC from the network and plug it by ethernet into the computer..
Do factory reset of the TC.. and do a simple setup.. leave it in router mode.. ignore all the problems.
Make absolutely sure ipv6 is set to link-local only for ethernet.
Turn wireless right off.. and start the backup again.. It might even be worth erasing the TC and start over.. It can do 60GB/hr by ethernet.. so should do the disk in around 12-15 hours. although to be generous it can take a long time when it does loads of small files.
Still got issues then tell us exactly what TC model it is.
