Making a custom lense hood for HD Video cameras...i.e. the HDR-HC1

i attached it to the supplied lens hood that came with that camera....this one is only made out of cardboard, black electrical tape, spray-painted with a couple coats on it, added a UV/lens protector and i have a film movie-looking camera. (cant show you the picture with it on the camera, becayse im using it to take picts) and suggestions to making a better one out of what materials/tenique? (the shadows mess up the pictures)

Johnny,
Great attempt! Now you've even got a template you can use to build another one out of some other material. I'd suggest using 1/8" or 1/4" black acrylic sheet (or perhaps even black anodized aluminum) for your next try. The acrylic pieces could be epoxied or MEK'd together and the aluminum could potentially be templated as a 2-part unit, thereby minimizing the number of seams. Both would be stronger than cardboard.
I remain completely baffled at the prices of commercial filter holders, sunshades and matte boxes for videocams. Good for you, building one on your own!

  • Does someone make a wide angle lense accessory for iPad video camera?

Would like to widen iPad video camera perspective when using Skype app. Looking for aftermarket product like Phocus, but for iPad video camera. Anything out there or do I need to develop a start-up myself?

There are a number of lens kits available that will work on the iPad, but I've never seen one that will work on the forward lense (which is what I assum you are looking for). Doesn't mean there isn't one however.

  • On the hunt for a video camera

I have summer school starting on the 19th of May and I received some of the packets early. One of them is a video portfolio packet. I want to be 100% ready before school starts. I do not know much about electronics... The video portfolio packet said that I must film what I do in a veterinary clinic. It also said that the video must be on a DVD, or a portable thumb drive, or other approved video storage device and assignments MUST be in Quick Time, MOV, WMV, MPEG, or AVI format. I do not have any idea what they're talking about. I only ever used iMovie and the videos are in m4v format. I do not have a video camera and I plan to shop for one. I have an old 15-inch MacBook Pro laptop with iMovie, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. It's 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and have a memory of 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 5DRAM. Graphics are NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB. Storage of 160 GB. Disc formats that can be written: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R DL, and DVD+R DL. I suspect that I would need plenty of memory because there will be 20 assignments in one video portfolio AND I will have to do two video portfolios this summer. I didn't receive the other video portfolio packet yet. I suspect that I must make a video portfolio per DVD. Do anyone have a slightest idea of what I would need for a video camera? What kind of DVD do I need to burn videos on? How much memory should I look for in a camera? What do I need to look for? Can I convert m4v videos into these approved formats? I'm looking for an inexpensive but decent quality video camera that films well and can be recognized on my MacBook Pro laptop. I want to be able to edit videos and burn DVDs on my laptop as well. Thanks for your time. Looking forward to hear from you soon!

  • Please help! i need to make multiple custom shaped frames for different videos in one scene and cant work out how!

    hi there!
im really stuck on this and cant work it out i hope you guys can help! i have been trying to make a single shot or scene whatever you want to call it with multiple videos playing all at the same time in it but i want them all to have their own custom shape. i know that i can just put them together into one frame and play them at once but they are all the original rectangle shape they where filmed in and i could put a mask over each one to make it a circle but i want to make each one a custom shape for example if you where to make a face out of 4 videos and one was the shape of the main part of the face one was the eyes one for the hair and one for the mouth now i would have to make the shape of each video the right shape for the corresponding body part then place them on top of each other and then i would have a face made from looping videos. i cannot work out how to make the frames of each video a custom shape after searching tutorials please can someone help me with this it would be greatly appreciated as it is a collage project. thanks very much for your time in the matter Josh.

ok thanks yea thats helped alot im new to this so thats why it seems basic to you but not me. i have tryed to find out through tutorials but could work it out. im now able to do this but i want to draw my mask free hand and it seems you can only place points with the pen tool? is this the only way to make the shape of my mask? or example in photoshop which i know well i can use a paint brush and paint any shape i want to make a mask but i cant see how to do that in after effects? any help on this would be greatly appreceated. thanks josh

  • Help me shop for a video camera?  Recommendations?

    Hello Friends,
I have been lurking in the forum and decided to ask for help. Thank you in advance for your thoughts, opinions.
My (old) current video camera is a Panasonic AG-EZ20 (1998?) which uses mini-dv tapes and firewire (1.1 megapixel). My old laptop died and I had to buy a new one with Windows Vista. Now I HAVE to upgrade to PPro (I was happy with Premiere.old).
My new Toshiba laptop has AMD64x2 chip (2.2 ghz) with 3 gb ram, 250gb hard drive has 125gb free, and I have an external 250gb storage drive. Is it sufficient?
My video projects are not professional. However, striving for quality at the prosumer level is a fun hobby worth spending time and money on. I will be shooting events, vacations, you-tube stuff about car repair hobby, NOT cinema epic or high definition type stuff.
I like the idea of a 3-ccd camera. Is there something about capture via firewire using mini-dv tape that is bad or troublesome compared to the new hard drive cameras and 3-CCD quality?
I have been looking at video cameras on Ebay and B&H photo. The AG-DVX100B seems like champagne compared to my old camera. Another thought was a PV-GS350 or PV-GS500 camera which would probably be an improvement that is reasonable priced. If you are happy with your camera, PPro software and computer please tell me about your kit? Is there a web site you found useful in your search for pre-sale information? I was hoping to spend less than $1,000 on the camera, but I would spend more if the ease of capture/edit and quality of output helped me justify it.
I look forward to reading your responses!

Although E-bay can be attractive, I agree with Harm on this (not so much on HDV though). I also agree with his recommendation RE; B&H. I purchased my VX2000 and XH-A1 from them and most of the accessories as well as still cameras. Are you aware that B&H sells used equipment? This could be an option if $$$ is issue.
To emphasize on the others--by all means mini-DV transport. Yeah, its inconvenient to lug around a few extra mini-Dv tapes--they take up so much room in a jacket pocket. So, save the inconvenience of tapes and get a cam with HDD--then you can either stop shooting when the disk is full or drag around a laptop to take an hour from shooting to download so you can continue shooting--much more convenient!! (wink wink).

  • Ideas for mixing video camera audio??

I know there is not one way to modify the audio from a video camera. I have a (dead room sound, not quiet a hiss); are there any recommendations to modify the sound quality? Everyone tells me that you I have to play around with it... But I have no ideas of where to start???

How someone would decide what adjustments needed to be made is entirely dependent on the condition of the audio as it is. And since we can't hear it, the best advice anyone could offer is just a guess.
You could upload a sample to a website then post a link here so people would be able to hear how it sounds now and then be able to offer more specific suggestions.

  • How do I import video from video camera direct to the computer

I have a macbook pro 15inch with retna display. I want to import video from my HDV Video camera. The camera has a HDMI port, and a firewire (squarish port, very small). What can i get to import the video to edit on the laptop.
    Thanks
    Russell

Frank is right, you can buy from Apple or Best Buy the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Now to your second question. The ports on your camera are similar to mine. I am still working out the HDMI to thunderbolt thing, but the small squarish port is your DV out port. You will need a 4pin to 9pin cable, which I just bought at Radio Shack.. don't get the RocketFish cable from Best Buy, it is BAD!! Trust me, I just spend so much time and money only to find out that for whatever reason, the Rocketfish cable that BestBuy sells is junk. Gigaware at Radio Shack worked INSTANTLY my friend when I fired up iMovie.
Try that and see if that doesn't help.

  • How can I view a video camera plugged into the TV tuner card's S-Video socket

HP Pavillion Elite HPE Series desktop. TV tuner card AVerMedia H752. Video camera connected to S-Video socket. Win7 64 bit OS. How can I view the camera output? Windows Media Center does not seem to provide a means.

    Hi,
Sorry, I don't know what are you trying to do. The Tuner card is like a TV which allow you watching TV like normal TV on your computer. The S-Video is OUT only, plugging a video camera to it won't do anything good.
    Regards.

Like many before, am struggling with print to video of HDV material captured as HDV 1080i60 to a Sony HDR-HC1 camera. Just can't figure out what settings to use, only get the darn blue screen. Have tried several settings, but no success. Does anyone know the trick? Thanks!

Have you tested the camera with non-HDV just to make sure the camera works?

  • Making some Custom Column Renderers for a JTable

    Hello People
I've been playing around with a JTable by following the tutorial "How to Use Tables". (I am using netBeans 4.1 to "sculpt" my swing objects onto the nice palette in the IDE. I don't know if this has anything to do with the errors but, it seems like netBeans requires some Gui components be initialized via this abovementioned "palette")
I believe that I need to somehow tell the JTable about what kinds of objects are in it so that it can render itself properly. I have a table set up with some default values in it
    ->Strings both Editable and Not-Editable
-> Integers both Editable and Not-Editable
-> Boolean rendered as a check box Editable
So upon startup, my progarm renders the table correctly. I have a button to clear all of the elements in the table, which works fine. It is only when I switch to another window, then switch back to an empty table ... the JTable needs to redraw itself. This is when I'm getting the error:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
            at ElementHelp.PrimitiveManager$MyVectorTableModel.getColumnClass(PrimitiveManager.java:93)
            at javax.swing.JTable.getColumnClass(JTable.java:1752)
            at javax.swing.JTable.getCellRenderer(JTable.java:3700)
            at javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicTableUI.paintCell(BasicTableUI.java:1148)
            at javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicTableUI.paintCells(BasicTableUI.java:1051)
            at javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicTableUI.paint(BasicTableUI.java:974)
            at javax.swing.plaf.ComponentUI.update(ComponentUI.java:142)
            at javax.swing.JComponent.paintComponent(JComponent.java:541)
            at javax.swing.JComponent.paint(JComponent.java:808)
    ...blah blah more exception stack.....
I think that because there are no elements in the table that the call to "getClass" for an element in the table returns a NullPointerException. I think I can avoid this via telling the JTable about the types of objects each column will contain. The tutorial suggests one of two solutions: (neither of which I can get to work)
    1) Use a class that extends the DefaultTableCellRenderer
    2) I should write somthing that ...extends JLabel and implements TableCellRenderer.... such as the tutorials ColorRenderer example. Which solution should I work out if I want my table to add/delete rows and be able to have a few cells edited. (It will never be restructured .. the column types won't change)
Also, I've created my own TableModel for it ... a class that extends AbstractTableModel ... (although not declaired, it also implemnts/overwrites functions from the TableModel interface)
Any suggestions on avoiding the abovementioned error?
thanks and happy holidays to everyone

I think that because there are no elements in the table that the call to "getClass" for an element in the table returns a NullPointerExceptionWell, if you have no data in the table then your TableModel should be returning "0" for the number of rows in the table and it won't be a problem.
Also, I've created my own TableModel for it ... Why? Use the DefaultTableModel it supports String, Integers and Booleans without any need for custom coding.

  • How to set custom aspect ratio for vertical video?

I need to have a vertical video (720x1080) rather than 1080x720. In the old FCP under project properties, one was able to change the ratio without a problem. On FCP X, the only formats avaible are all horizontal. Am I missing something? Help-thanks!

Thank you Tom. That was very helpful! Is there away to make it export on those dimmensions too? with the compund clip I got it to look good, but the export option is only 1080x720 with black on both sides.

  • Does adobe PE 7 have the right preset for my video camera?

The video my camera outputs is high definition 1280×720 30fps video in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format. Which preset should I use in PE 7 for best results?
    thanks,
    Paul

You're right, there is no preset for 1280 x 720. Unfortunately I dont think upgrading to version 8 is going to be an option. What would be my best option from the presets in PE 7?
PS very impressed with the prompt and knowledgeable replies
