Making a DVD impossible to copy

Hi there, I was hoping that someone might know about this......
I would like to create a DVD so that it plays perfectly but if someone wants to make copies of this DVD, that it would not be possible. (More or less, that they would have to come to me for more copies).
I would really appreciate some advice.
Thank you!

to add a professional copy protection, your DVD has to be 'glas mastered' in some professional DVD-printer factory.. they own licences for that protection scheme.. and, for sure, they let themself getting paid.. the mentioned 3k$ seems to me realistic .. plus copy costs per piece.
... and there're tools as *, ** or the easy to use ****** (rippping as topic is not allowed on this board, and as a European, I'm not even allowed to speak the names out loud ) which 'break'/rip that copy protection within minutes........
for me, there's only three ways of 'copy protection' on a consumer level:
1) add watermarks to your video.. it doesn't avoid the copying, but it mentions, it is YOUR work..
2) make your DVDs accessible.. seen DVDs on sale on some 'collector's tradeshow' .. you could buy them NOW and for such a cheap price, I don't care for +ripping and converting and...+
3) add 'features' outside the disk.. a good booklet, a link to some 'additional' website with extras etc (ok, that link could be 'shared' too, individualize access by somekind of PIN...), a funny case, a mailing list..

  • Making autostart DVD when copying Pinnacle video-ts files on the Mac

I have made the following files on a PC with Pinnacle. I want to burn the files using my iMac to make an autostart DVD. The copy I made autostarts on a PC but not the iMac. The Mac recognised the DVD as a valid DVD but wont show the video.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Anchor
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    Volume
    VTS010.BUP
    VTS010.IFO
    VTS011.VOB

Unfortunately I was not quite acccurate in the description of what happens. The first DVD I made I didn't put the files in a folder. The DVD was not recognised at all. For my second go (after looking at a DVD that worked) I put the files in a folder called VIDEO_TS. This DVD autostarted DVD Player however when I attempt to Play using the controls there is a message "Supported disk not available ". Double clicking any file except the ISO files gives message "the file is not a movie file". Clicking an IFO file starts iTunes. If I put in a DVD which works all looks the same and behaves the same on clicking. The only differences I can see are that the graphic on the preview of the .ISO files says exec although the kind is iTunes.app On the DVD that works the ISO files have an iTunes graphic. Both are 12KB.
In addition my DVD has an extra folder (All Slides) of pictures which we also want to include on the DVD. The DVD that works has a folder AUDIO_TS which is empty. Should I try including that too? Also there are the 2 extra files anchor and volume. Should I delete these?
    Hope you can help. Thanks

  • When I try to restore my iTunes library from DVD, iTunes stops copying the files after some minutes

On 2 of my 9 DVDs, iTunes stops copying and I can't do anything with iTunes anymore. I have to reboot my computer. So I'm not able to bring back all my files. Has anyone got help?

Thanks but I already did read all of the help notes, which aren't very helpful for this.  I did find out the problem- Apple.....they evidently changed one of the major upsides to their old software- being able to back up your entire library onto dvd's- so you can longer do that or restore from the dvds created from older versions of itunes.  I suspect greed is at play in that Apple now wants you to pay $24.95 per year to use a "cloud" service where they back it up for you.  I can buy a lifetime supply of back up dvds for one year's worth of cloud.  So I am now looking into other music software as I am Appled-out.  There is no reason for them to take away the back up portion of the software other than to sell you thrir cloud service.  As we have already given them a ton of money for 5 Ipods and a bunch of music, I think we have contributed enough.  Time to look to solutions outside of the Apple money tree.  But thank you for reading and replying.

  • Making a DVD from Keynote

This should be a simple process, but I can't find out how to do it. (I get it to work after hours of trial and error, usually, but this time I'm stuck)
I make a Keynote show - beautiful photos, text, etc - but without the music since I've been told the best way to add the sound is to make a movie first and THEN use that to make the DVD.
I exported the Keynote presentation to Quicktime (iMovie wouldn't take the actual Keytime presentation), and then moved that to iMovie. But it won't let me move the clip below to actually make a movie and add sound.
And I tried moving the Quicktime presentation (of course no sound in this version, but the original has sound) directly to iDVD. It appears on the Media/Movie page but I can't figure where to go from there. Nothing happens.
Sigh. Any help would be appreciate.

This actually is an addendum to my own email since somehow half the message got dropped. Sorry.
Basically I've created a Keynote presentation (lovely photos, text, etc) with the intent of making a DVD to share with my mother who is bedridden.
(In the "olden days" I would just make a slide show in iPhoto, add sound, and burn. But I love whaat Keynote can do, it's just figuring out how to get THAT presentation to a DVD I can play in a regular DVD player.
I didn't include sound on the version I exported to Quicktime since I was told that the best way to make the DVD was to make a Movie first so I could better adjust the sound. So I exported the soundless one to Quicktime and then moved that to iMovie, but couldn't get it to let me move the clip below.
I also tried moving the Quicktime version directly to iDVD. It is there on the Media/Movie page, but I can't get anything to happen after that. (I could easily use the version of my Keynote presentation with sound, if it would let me,, but I understand there is a problem with that too....)
Again, any suggestions would be helpful.

  • Making a DVD without menus

    Hi all,
I'm a newbie to DVD Studio Pro. I'm wondering if there is a way to make the equivalent of an Autostart movie in iDVD. No menu, no buttons – just put the DVD in the player and it starts.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Andrew

    Thanks for that David,
I was trying what you suggest but in the process have hit another problem that is preventing me from making the DVD at all. The audio is not linked with the video. I have a 2-minute movie that I made in Final Cut Pro. The movie plays fine in FCP. To export from FCP, I made a Reference movie via:
File > Export > QuickTime Movie...
    Settings: Current Settings
    Include: Audio & Video
Markers: None (there aren't any in my movie)
In DVD Studio Pro, I clicked on the Import button and selected the .mov file.
Two items appear in the Name column: 2min.mov (Video) and 2min.mov (Audio)
I just don't get it. I've watched Larry Jordan's tutorial video on Lynda.com and am following the instructions to the letter. Do you know where I'm going wrong?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

I am making multiple DVD's of roughly 50 hours of footage on DVD Studio pro with 4 separate menus for 4 different 'parts' or series if you will. 50 hours - 20 episodes - 4 parts of 5 episodes each. What are my options in terms of burning these parts on to separate DVD's, what is the process, what size DVD RW should I buy, what bitrate should I use, and what quality I should expect for the burn. Any advice or insight is welcome.

    >>What are my options in terms of burning these parts on to separate DVD's<<
20 episodes totaling 50 hours equals about 2.5 hours per episode assuming all episodes have the same duration.  Fitting 2.5 hours onto one single layer DVD would require a low bit rate which means quality wouldn't be anywhere near best, but that's a judgement call you'll have to make based on several factors.  For example; if there is not much motion in the video (talking heads, etc), you can get by with a lower bit rate and may not notice any quality difference.
    >>what is the process>>
The process is essentially the same as it is when authoring a regular DVD with 2 hours or less of content.  However, with as many discs as you'd need to complete this "set," you'll need to create a separate DVD Studio Project for each disc.  Basically, you'd use one of Compressor's DVD Presets (or customize a preset) to create an MPEG--2 video file (.m2v) and a Dolby Digital audio file (.AC3).  Import both of those assets into your DVD Studio Pro project for authoring and burning.
If you want to keep one episode per disc, DVD Studio Pro does have a 150 minute preset or you could use dual-layer discs with a higher bit rate for better quality.  Again; your call.
    >>what size DVD RW should I buy<<
Size?  12cm.  Capacity?  Single layer, single sided DVD discs (DVD-5) have a rated capacity of 4.7Gb (4.37Gb actual), including menus.  If you use single layer discs and want to keep the quality reasonably good, you'd need at least 50 discs to complete this "set" with each disc holding roughly 2 hours of footage if you keep the menu on each disc simple.  Or, you could use dual-layer discs (DVD-9) which have a capacity of about 7.95Gb - almost doubling the recordable capacity.  There are also dual-sided, dual-layer discs available (DVD-18) but they are relatively expensive and have to be manually turned over to continue playback ... but they do have roughly 15.9Gb capacity.
    >>what bitrate should I use, and what quality I should expect for the burn<<
Exactly; the quality is dependent on the bit rate chosen, as well as the quality of the compression.  Using compression markers where needed can greatly increase the quality of playback but will most likely increase the file size of the compressed video.  For the best quality, keeping the bit rate  as high as possible allowed under the DVD specification will yield the best quality but some DVD players may choke if the bit rate is too high.  For best quality I typically aim for a bit rate around 7.6 to 8.0Mbps but that will only allow about one hour of footage.
Naturally, if you decrease the bit rate, you can fit more footage onto the disc but quality will be sacraficed.   Here's a chart approximating DVD bit rates and durations for single layer discs (does not include space for menus):
    3.5Mbps - 120 minutes
    5.0Mbps -   95 minutes
    6.0Mbps -   82 minutes
    7.6Mbps -   65 minutes
    8.0Mbps -   60 minutes

The details you're providing are very helpful, Maj_Dad. With airplane mode enabled,
there would be no message because that disables celluar data. I would recommend
tying that mode with WiFi to see if it still happens. It sounds like this issue
has something to do with one of the applications on the device.

    Hi there,
I don´t have any clue why the machine shuts itself off and I cannot give you a quick solution but I can give you a thought how to make some accurate troubleshooting:
Remove the newly installed module and try it again. Then give some feedback if it worked. If not we have to discuss further on that issue, would appreciate some feedback from you.

I'm making a DVD for our class reunion.  A fellow classmate has some video on a mini cassette that he said he could put on a dvd.  Will I be able to import from that dvd to imovie to use in my dvd?  Or does it have to be in another format, maybe flash drive?

Ask your friend to supply you the DVD as a data DVD using either DV or AIC as the video format, burning the DVD as a DVD for a DVD player will degrade the video quality.

This could be lots of things.  You should define a new user & see if this works on the new user account.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.

    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.

  • Making a DVD from

I am making a DVD from final cut pro, it is about 1 hour 50 minutes. I am using idvd are there any suggestions on how or/if to compress this to make it fit on idvd. I thought I would try posting here first instead of the idvd board.
    thanks!

iDVD has a limited number of (commonly used) file formats it can deal with, and uses its own DVD video encoder to format and build the DVD. The iDVD help system describes the kinds of files it can accept.
You would use Compressor to encode the separate video and Dolby surround audio files for DVD Studio Pro projects, and iDVD does not accept those file types. If you need more control over your encoding, you should use FCP and Compressor with DVDSP.
The iDVD forums will have more on that topic.
That being said, I love using iDVD because of it's ease and simplicity. I use it to make quick DVDs of my Final Cut Pro projects. Just feed iDVD the right files and it works beautifully.
    Cheers

  • Making a DVD from iPhone Video

Lifelong Windows user here seeking some Mac expertise:)
I am in the process of making a DVD from Iphone home videos that can be played on any DVD player.
I see that Mac's video format is .mov which from what I can tell is not the same format needed to make DVD's that can be played on all DVD players. I already have the files saved on my MacBook Pro as mov. files can anyone tell me how to get them converted in order to have them play on a DVD player? Can iMovie do the conversion for you or do I need another program to convert the files and then process them into a movie in the iMovie program or even Adobe Premiere Elements 12 which I also have installed on this MacBook Pro.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is great information to have. Thank You for your quick response. Following your response I did some more research on video converters and found that Handbrake which I already have installed on the MacBook converts video files but only in the output formats of MP4 and MKV which does not help my cause; however, while doing that research I came across a program known as iMedia Converter Deluxe for Mac from Skysoft which from what I can tell supports output .avi video formats. Do you have any experience / advice on iMedia or any other recommended video converter program that works well with Mac and is preferably "free"?

  • Making a DVD with 3 iMovie projects

I am fairly new at making a DVD. I have iMovie 9.0.4 and am on a Mac OS X version 10.6.8.
My question is: I would like to make a DVD with 3 chapters.
Chapter #1 would be an iMovie project (13 minutes)
Chapter #2 would be an iMovie project ( 8 minutes)
Chapter #3 would be an iMovie project (14 minutes)
I have all three of the movie projects completed.
At this time they are all seperate projects in iMovie.
They are the only projects that I have in imovie.
I hope to combine all three projects on one DVD and provide the DVD to classmates for a 50 year reunion.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Good or bad info. To be honest - I never use the SlideShow way - but it's well described in this forum and I tested it to be sure that it works. Problem I came up on was
    • Black framing - One must select to not scale photos in SlideShow
    • Bad sound - as I had to high level it resulted in severe distortion - Lowering it helped
So the problems can be handled - but in reality I rather do
    • One movie containing all parts and Chapter Marks set to match. This too has a built in problem as one can not set Chapter Marks in transitions or within 2 sec from them (OR IN VERY BEGINNING OF MOVIE). But there is a way around this too.
    • Export the combined movie as Full Quality QuickTime .mov
    • Import this QT.mov and now You can set the Chapter Marks (except at very beginning = no need to do this - iDVD does this by it self)
And then I add each Chapter as a free movie too
This works greatly - BUT the Con in this case is that it takes x2 space on DVD. For material less than 60 min this is no problem - but for longer movies one has to be even more elaborate to fix it.
    Good Luck !
    Yours Bengt W
