Making a DVD with 3 iMovie projects

I am fairly new at making a DVD. I have iMovie 9.0.4 and am on a Mac OS X version 10.6.8.
My question is: I would like to make a DVD with 3 chapters.
Chapter #1 would be an iMovie project (13 minutes)
Chapter #2 would be an iMovie project ( 8 minutes)
Chapter #3 would be an iMovie project (14 minutes)
I have all three of the movie projects completed.
At this time they are all seperate projects in iMovie.
They are the only projects that I have in imovie.
I hope to combine all three projects on one DVD and provide the DVD to classmates for a 50 year reunion.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Good or bad info. To be honest - I never use the SlideShow way - but it's well described in this forum and I tested it to be sure that it works. Problem I came up on was
• Black framing - One must select to not scale photos in SlideShow
• Bad sound - as I had to high level it resulted in severe distortion - Lowering it helped
So the problems can be handled - but in reality I rather do
• One movie containing all parts and Chapter Marks set to match. This too has a built in problem as one can not set Chapter Marks in transitions or within 2 sec from them (OR IN VERY BEGINNING OF MOVIE). But there is a way around this too.
• Export the combined movie as Full Quality QuickTime .mov
• Import this QT.mov and now You can set the Chapter Marks (except at very beginning = no need to do this - iDVD does this by it self)
And then I add each Chapter as a free movie too
This works greatly - BUT the Con in this case is that it takes x2 space on DVD. For material less than 60 min this is no problem - but for longer movies one has to be even more elaborate to fix it.
Good Luck !

There were errors during the project validation that have to be fixed before burning the project."

  • When making an movie with iMovie from photos, some photos seems to move when watching on a screen. Too much light ? Too much white ?

When making a movie with iMovie from Photos, some of them seems to move when watching on screen or TV.
It seems to be a brillance problem but I tried to make the light or the blank lower without result.

    Hello
The movement you see on photos in iMovie is most likely the Ken Burns motion effect, which you can modify or turn off.

  • Suggestion request for creating a DVD with iMovie 4, but no iDVD

...or even a DVD burner. Sounds stupid, right? Allow me to explain.
I recently filmed a wedding for a friend using a borrowed Panasonic MiniDV camcorder.
My girlfriend has an iBook G4 with iMovie 4.0.1. However, she doesn't have iDVD...because she didn't purchase a superdrive with this machine. Only the standard combo drive.
Without knowing or thinking about any of this (this is where I was completely stupid) I successfully imported and edited the wedding footage. The final time clocked out at an hour and a half. I had a grand old time doing it, until I started thinking about how I would get this to DVD. I have since returned the borrowed camcorder.
Do you think it is possible or even advisable for me to:
    a) not purchase iDVD or a DVD burner as this is most likely the only video project I'll ever work on
    b) Export the movie in the highest quality format as possible
    c) Transfer said file to an external hard drive (which I would be willing to purchase as I would have other applications for it later)
    d) Bring it to a public facility in my town (like Screenz) that has iMovie, iDVD, and a superdrive and burn it there. Of course I realize that depending on the quality I export at, this could take several hours to do, but if it could be successful I'd have no problem doing so. I also realize I should scope them out and determine what versions they have.
Your thoughts? Should I attempt this? Need more info?
Thanks so much for your suggestions! Call me an idiot if you need to. I have no pride in this matter.

Should I attempt this? Need more info?
... hm, don't know the folks of Screenz, wether they allow to "use" their machines without a fee... but, why not giving it a try?
.. buy the ext. harddrive there... makes you a "friend" & good customer..
    after purchasing the drive...
    * make sure, it has a firewire connection (=100% compatibility)
    * connect drive, power on...
    * launch Disk Utility from your Utilities Folder...
    * select drive
    * choose in drop-down menu "MacOsExtended/hfs", give a nice name..
THEN, export your project, share/Quicktime/Full Quality...
AND drag'n drop your iM project (that with the star icon) onto drive
File 1 is in case, for some reasons, File 2 isn't accepted.. the qt.mov could be imported into any iDVD version...
File 2 is in case, they have versions which accept your iMproject folder (any iDVD4 - 6 should do so); this file keeps chapter markers, in case you use one; and stills have probably a slightly better quality... then, you launch iDVD, choose a nice theme, drag'n drop the iM from your hd to iDVD window...
try to get access to some "überMac", Intel quadcore 4GB RAM ... then, iDVD creation is done with your 90min project in less then 15minutes....
buy Verbatim dvd-r, no second try needed..

  • Re-connecting events with iMovie project

    Hi,
basically i was making a movie using "imovie vesion 9" on the guest account of a friends computer. Having uncompleted the project i saved it onto an external hardrive to continue at a later date (im aware that this would involve re-importing events since it was a guest account) anyway turns out i only saved the "imovie project" and not the "imovie events" onto the hardrive, so now when i went to return to the movie, the project reads "source clip missing" with yellow exclamation triangles on each clip i.e, there are no events in the imovie project,
is there anyway i can reimport the events and reconnect them with the "imovie project" ?
    Thanks, Ryan

Ok. I found my answer. Here's the excerpt from another thread if anybody else is wondering the same thing:
The iMovie Events Folder should have a .localized extension on it. Verify that it does by doing a Get Info on the iMovie Events Folder.
Now find one of the iMovie Projects that shows missing clips in the Finder. Right click on the project in the Finder and select Show Package Contents. Now open the Project file inside the project in bbedit or any editor like it. Search for iMovie Events and verify the your paths are correct. If not, fix them and save the Project file.

  • PROBLEM WITH iMOVIE PROJECT CONVERSION TO QT

I occasionally have strange things happen when converting iMovie (DV) projects to 'full quality' QT.dv files.
Example: footage transferred from a visually pulsating image (originated on a 1920s 30 line mechanical TV scanner invented by J L Baird) has an acceptable rippling effect seen in iMovie. When converted to a QT (full quality) file the rippling becomes a rapid strobing flicker, ie something is changed in conversion. And, DVDs made from each - from the iMovie project and from its QT conversion - produce these same effects.
Any info on what happens in conversion to QT causing this problem?

Well...thanks a lot for ur help...!
But...somehow, I feel the settings of my Top-Link Db-Adapter are fine...
(B'coz as far as i can remember, i haven't meddled with it since creating/configuring the DB-Adapter in my ESb project...and there, i could specify my DB Connection ( say, DBConnection1, & could later import the Exact Table i wanted as an Offline Data source (for the routing rule..for Mapping the fields..) )
...i somehow believe there should be a problem with the <ORACLE_HOME>\j2ee\home\application-deployments\default\DbAdapter\oc4j-ra.xml
B'coz as Marc pointed out, i couldn't see any data-source with JNDI name loc/DBConnection1DataSource in my EM console...
So, i tried creating a new data-source there & pointed it to one of the existing connection-pools in the file :-
    <ORACLE_HOME>/j2ee/home/config/data-sources.xml
In this connection-pool, i basically set the proper connection-string ("jdbc.thin.....") to point to the proper SID...( as i had set up & tested in my JDeveloper Database Connection..)
    Hope my approach is right..??
    Or..am i missing something here..??
    Thanks a lot again....!

  • Unable to burn DVD with iMovie?

    Am fairly dissapointed with Apple.
I have spent time today creating a short movie of photos of my 2 month old son.
When trying to share with iDVD I have realised that my iLife 11 doesn't come with this software and I can't download it!
I am therefore unable to burn my project to disc and feel I have wasted my time.
In my opinion this seriously reduces the usablility of iMovie.
Is there anyway I can burn the DVD without spending a shed load of cash on some third party software??
    Thanks

I was also disappointed when I bought my Mac and it came without iWeb and iDVD.
For burning DVDs, I use a free app called Burn http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html.
You can't do fancy menus or anything that iDVD can, but at least you can get your iMovie Projects onto a DVD.
You have to export your project from iMovie and then drag the .m4v or .mov file that comes out onto Burn (Make sure the Video tab at the top is selected.
Of course, if you have a MacBook Air, you'll need an external optical drive capable of burning DVDs.

  • Making Data DVD from iMovie HD (5)

    HELP!!!
I need to make a data DVD of my iMovie project to send to a stock-footage company. Anybody know EXACTLY how to do this? I'm using Toast 7. Thanks for your help.--Porter

in your o.p. you said to make a data DVD of my iMovie project to send to a stock-footage company... my guess was, you need a "universal" standard/very little companies support "Mac only"... in the data-disk options of Toast, you can choose many formats, "Mac" too...
    reading your second post...
my guess is, you try to do a "data spanning" to continue on subsequent discs, correct...? use/read "Help" of Toast7...
... where is the Quicktime of my iMovie HD (5) project?
    wherever you've stored it
there's the socalled "ref.mov" within the project's file (that with a star); in iMHD, this file isn't a folder anymore, but a "package"; simply ctrl-click on it, choose from menu "show package content"... beware: any "fumble" of movie.pkg can distroy whole project.
    BUT!
as said, that is just a ref.mov; Toast can create a videoDisk (the ref.mov "collects" all need video+audio; a ref-mov is just an "alias"; it is just <500kB = not the video/movie itself!); but - to my knowledge - is not able to create a data-disk (=movie.dv) from a ref.mov
if you need a movie, you need to create one by export/share from within iM, choose Quicktime/Full Quality... huge files: 1h = ~13GB...

  • Making a DVD from iMovie - how do I do this?

I have a movie project in iMovie.  I want to burn a disk that will play in a DVD player.  How do I do this?

I have done lots of this.
Purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MC623Z-A-iLife-VERSION/dp/B003XKRZES/ref=sr_1_1?ie=U
    http://dealmac.com/lw/artclick.html?1,527850,1872219
Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.

  • Making a DVD with chapters

I'm making a DVD on iDVD with chapters but it won't play all the way through unless it comes back to the menu. I could do it on DVD Pro but it doesn't have the theme I am using on iDVD and it won't let me import it either. iDVD let me make scenes or chapters but not where it supposed to be. How can I change that?
    Thoughts anyone?
    Sheyla

    Hi Sheyla
This can be more than one problem. As I get it You are using FinalCut Pro and iDVD.
    Then
    • How do You go from FCP to iDVD - all steps described ?
    • Are You aware of the iDVD BUG ?
I have a general note on this and more - Please read.
    FCE/P to iDVD
Several things that I keep in mind
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mixdown
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screensaving

  • Making a DVD with HD and SD assets

How can I make a SD DVD with HD and SD assets and retain the highest quality on the HD material? I have tried mixing the short vidoes on an SD timeline in Final Cut Pro, then rendering out the HD and export using Best Quality 90 min DVD settings in Compressor. I then import that file into a DVDSP project, and then chapter out that track and make stories to create separate play buttons for each video and a Play All button as well. The quality of the HD material seems worse than that of the SD material. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Robin.

Do you know how to best compress HD for optimal play on standard DVD players?
If I am just dealing with HD material, I will send out the timeline as a self-contained .mov in ProRes (I like self-contained, saves some time on re-encoding) then use Compressor to make a SD m2v. You can start with the preset but then go in and change the frame controls to “Better” and also change the encoding rate if there is room to increase the rate.
    Calculating rates [information here|http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php]
Can get very good results from HD material delivered as SD format.
When mixing things, it becomes more challenging. Depending on the material (is most of the material HD or SD in original format, can they be edited separately or do they need to go from one to the other to make the movie, etc.) I may try various approaches. If the majority of the footage is HD, I may just go with an HD timeline (though the SD material will not look as good.)
When you say the quality of the HD material is worse, what is worse? Given all things being equal, camera quality (in other words you are not using an extremely high end SD camera and a $300 consumer HD cam, one is really good lighting with little movement, while the other is high speed race cars in streelights at night) the HD footage shouldn't look worse than the SD material...

  • Trouble with imovie projects

    Hi,
I have a large imovie project, but want to finish it in FCE. How do I import it so A) it will play? B) not have a tone opf space inserted between clips?
What am I doing wrong? HELP.

If you can live with one long clip (that you can cut up as needed in FCE) you can make a dv stream out of your iMovie project and import that. You will have to render the audio and may run into the problem I did of "Out of Memory" when rendering the audio. But you can probably fix the memory problem by erasing unneeded render files.

  • Making a DVD from Imovie

how do I publish an Imovie to media browser in a higher quality than "large"?...the video camera used was 1080p

DVD is as Standard - SD-Video
BUT - Hollywood can invest in encoding programs for $$$$$ and if they didn't deliver any better than iDVD one might ask Why.
But the BIG factor here is - iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - as non of them delivers interlaced video over to iDVD (any way I know of) but only every second line resulting in a severe quality loss.
You are far more better of with iMovie HD6 or any version of FinalCut as they deliver full interlaced video to iDVD so that it can do as much to it as possibly.
Yes You can (and I do) use Roxio Toast™ to burn BD-code to standard DVDs - resulting in a DVD that NEEDS a Blu-Ray player to be viewed - not even a standard Mac can play it (but funny enough Toast BD-player tool can)
Still if burned on BD-disks and via a BD-Burner - then no Mac can play it.
I use as PlayStation 3 to playback.

  • Converting VideoCD to DVD with iMovie

Is there a "best way" to convert a video CD disc created in iMovie 3 to a standard DVD in iMovie 4? I have a bunch of video CDs I'd like to combine onto one DVD. I do not have the original iMovie 3 files - just the final video CD discs.
I'm guessing quality will suffer, but I'll appreciate any advise I can get.
    iMac G5 20-inch   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2 GB RAM, 250 GB External HD

VCD quality is so poor that I wouldn't degrade it any more with any MPEG-DV-MPEG conversions!
Instead, just resample the 44.1 kHz VCD audio to the 48 kHz DVD spec. The VCD video "happens" to already be in DVD spec so you don't have to do anything to it.
Then just re-author the audio and video as a video-DVD. Voila: original VCD quality on a DVD!
