Making a file for spot colour printing.

Hi, so I'm at a print shop in Perth, our old graphic designer has left, and left us with a pickle.
We have a couple of digital printers here; we use a Fuji Xerox 5065 II for our main daily stuff.
We also print NCR books as a spot colour process on our Riso machine.
We are trying to print a hard copy of a client’s artwork on our 5065 that has a colour screen? (Sorry I’m not sure what the correct term is)
So that the colours show up as dots on the page and can be separated on our Riso?
I've looked into changing the DPI on an image, but this is an overall effect. Our old graphic designer somehow managed to have only the color sections of the page show up as dots and not the rest.
When I say dots, it's like the DPI on that part of the page is less than the rest so that it's clear to the naked eye that the image is made of larger dots?
Is there a way in Indesign, or any Adobe program or that matter on the 5065 if anyone knows the machine that I can adjust or create this setting?
I'm sorry for my naive wording on the matter, any help is appreciated.

Ok,
sorry for the confusion, like I say, this is the first time I've had to deal with the situation.
So......
if say you have a logo that has a text box, and the background of the text box is a solid colour.
if we put that logo through our Riso machine, it can't seperate the text from the background block, and so just prints it as a large coloured block.
Now, our old graphic artist, used to do this thing where he would take the  text box or solid shape and he would change it from being a solid colour to being dots. like he changed the dpi but the dots were large enough to see with the naked eye.
this way when we put it through the Riso machine, it could seperate the text from infront of the coloured box and would print them both. The box would still be dotty but on the Riso it would look fine.
Hope this makes more sense, if not I'll take some scans when i get back into work on Monday.
Cheers in advance.

  • Setting up document for two-colour printing

I'm creating a document that will be printed using two colours: black and a Pantone ink. In the Swatches panel I have deleted all the swatches except for Black and my Pantone colour (and obviously None, Paper and Registration are still there). I have also created some mixed-ink swatches based on the black and Pantone colour.
I notice, however, that the Ink Manager still displays Cyan, Magenta and Yellow as well as the Black and Pantone. Acrobat's Ink Manager does the same, depsite the Preflight showing that it only produces two plates. (In the Output Preview, only the Black and Pantone channels show coverage, but the crop marks show on all five channels.)
Should I be concerned? Is there a way of setting up a document for two-colour printing that I've missed?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

The ink manager is not a problem, bu the mixed colors potentially are, depending on the press being used. Some small 2-color presses use a single blanket and mix the ink on the blanket for overprints (which is what mixed inks are), creating a path for cross-contamination of the inks that can muddy the colors all around. You might want to verify that this will not be a problem on your job.

  • Is there a way to create file for ebooks and print?

    Hi folks,
I have been looking around online for information on how (or even if it's possible) to set up book on InDesign that is suitable for producing a print-ready PDF and also being suitable for producing epub and/or mobi files for submission to Amazon, etc.
So my first question is whether or not it's technically possible (and efficient) to do that. I thought it would be great to have each book (with all its subdocuments) set up once, and from that I can produce the PDF I sent to the printers, and also product ebook files.
If it is possible, can anyone point me in the right direction for instruction (i.e. best practices, steps, etc.) for this?
So far what I am turning up online is info on how to set up a book for ebook product OR the usual info on how to set up books for print production. But I've not yet found anything that covers doing both at once.
    Thank you

This is not an easy task, but if you plan beforehand, I think it's feasible to mantain a "master" file, both for print and ePUB. It really depends on the complexity of your layout. For already laid out docs, this could be a real problem.
Nonetheless, it's not a very efficient/scalable approach at all. There's no escape from heavily editing the ePUB XHTML code (and images) after export. Kindle files are another story, but you can generate them from your finished ePUB – with more code editing, of course.

  • What dpi should I use when making a file for a HD (1920x1080px) in Photoshop??

I am making a graphic for an HD (1920x1080px) in Photoshop and I wanted to know which dpi Should I use? 72dpi?100dpi?300dpi?
I dont want this to bee seen bad in a big screen...=S
    Thanks in Advance,

PPI only applies to print. Don't set it to anything.
Photoshop defaults to 72 but the number is irrelevant for screen design.

  • Making CD's For In-Store Printing

I made a similar topic a long time ago and no one answered, but it's still a problem so I thought I would try again.
I burned a cd with iPhoto which had (presumably) 211 pictures. I took my cd to my local RiteAid to print up photos (they have a great deal now where you send in your cd like a roll of film and you get all your pictures for $0.09 each). When I insert the disk into their kodak machine to double check the disk, the machine reads 475 photos. Some are duplicated, not all, with little yellow exclamaition points.
I plan to talk to Kodak about this problem too, but does anyone know how to burn pictures for in store printing.
I was able to export photos to easyshare which properly burned the cd. However, now I have 2 copies of every photo (one for iphoto one for easyshare). I could use easyshare instead of iphoto as my primary picture organizer, but, except for burning cd's, iphoto is superior.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Creating postscript files for high res printing

I am having a lot of trouble between Adobe InDesign and Adobe Professional making a postscript file that I can send to a direct-to-plate rip. I can't get the halftone images to come out as halftones. All of the pictures come out solid. This NEVER happens when I print the file from Adobe Pagemaker and I use the same printer and printer drivers. What am I doing wrong?

Yes, I really need a PS file. Here's the procedure: I create a newsletter in Adobe InDesign. I print to a booklet using a printer designated for creating direct-to-plate. It automatically generates a postscript file. What happens is that the file is created properly and I always check it through Adobe Acrobat Professional to be sure there are no errors. There is either something in the InDesign procedure or in the Adobe Distiller that converts the halftone files incorrectly. The type comes out okay, but anything with grayscale imaging or with screens comes out in solid black or white, no "dots" if you will. I don't know if I am explaining myself properly, but I am a commercial printer and I use this procedure to create the plate I use to print the job on my press.
Does this make any sense to you?

  • Any recommendations for A3 colour  printer for small studio?

Need a printer to do A3 or A3+ printouts for client mockups in small studio.
Can anyone recommend one? Needs to be networked with 3 people using it.

Formally, your question belongs on the Apple ColorSync Users list and not here, but Pages is the place where photography and typography come together, so here goes.
    1. Stay away from toner-based printing devices. They tend to have a tiny gamut, too small for the RGB colour space in which you capture and correct your photographs, and too small for proofing.
    2. Stay away from printing devices intended for the office imaging market. These devices tend to have a small hardwired RGB colour space, that is, sRGB.
You may not be able to work around the cap on the colour gamut in an ICC characterisation of the colour device, so you can't get at its full colour gamut.
    3. For presentation printing and proof printing, a graphic arts CcMmYK inkjet with bright and neutral white substrate produces a colour gamut you can use in two ways.
    a. For presentation printing you can address the whole gamut of the inks+substrate, reproducing as much as possible of the colour space within which you capture and correct photographs. Use the smart 3D gamut comparison in the ColorSync Utility to see what you could be loosing.
    b. For proof printing you can clip the large gamut to the size and shape of the gamut of the intended printing condition, adding paper white simulation for D50 visual matching and matching by colour measuring instrument for contract proofing using a control strip.
There are contract quality presentation-printing and proof-printing RIPs for Mac OS X Server. BEST/EFI Colorproof by a group of people in Germany is one such. They have a forum where you can work out questions on configuring rendering intents, or you can ask on the Apple ColorSync list.

  • A layer for spot uv printing?!

    Afternoon all,
Im sending a piece of work to printers which is done in Indesign, and there are 5 photographs on the front that i would like printed in spot uv so theyre nice and glossy and stand out.
So they have told me i need to create a seperate layer for this, im not sure what thay mean or how exactly to do it, as i have finished the design already..
do i need to go back and change it somehow??
If anyone could help, would be muchly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Rebecca

Make a new layer on top.
Add a new SPOT color for varnish -- it doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it's a spot color, and you should name if Varnish to avoid confusion.
Draw frames on the new layer where you want the varnish and fill them with the new spot color.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!! These frames MUST be set to overprint or they will obliterate your photos. Window > Output > Attributes in CS5.5, but I think it may be directly under the Window menu in earlier verisons, and chck the Overprint Fill box. You may also want to define this as an Object Style that you can assign to the varnish frames. Both the color and the overprint attribute can be set in the Fill section of the style definition.
You'll probably want to turn off the varnish layer for proofing, but it needs to be there for separations. My instinct would be to export with Acrobat 6 or higher compatibility to maintain the layers.

  • PCM files for HP Universal Printing PCL 5 fail to install

PCM files fail to install at Printer Properties \ Device Settings \ External Fonts \ Properties.
PCM files are found, font names are displayed, fonts move to "Installed Fonts" box,
but there are no error messages when I click OK.
When returning to External Fonts \ Properties, no fonts have been installed.
Looking for docs on required PCM file format, too.
    TIA, Pete

I work for Troygroup. Pete's question has a very simple answer. If this is Windows 7, disable UAC. You can re-enable UAC once the PCM files are installed.
If this is Windows 8, it is a bit trickier. In addition to UAC you must also click on an administration button (with the shield icon) from within the driver. I usually click the one under the sharing tab in the driver, however this requires printer sharing to be turned off in order to see this button.
If you run into this problem on Windows 8 and have trouble send me an email: [email protected]
The best way to install Troys fonts as of 2014 is to use the MICR Printer Installer that we put together. It disables UAC, installs a printer and the PCM files. You can get this from the Troygroup website.

  • Proper way to save FW file for use in print and web?

I have a high resolution FW file that has a lot of vectors, but includes gradients too.
It is on a transparent artboard, and I want to preserve the transparency.  I want to be
able to use it for both print and web projects.   I am assuming that the best way to do
this is to save it as a PSD file, but when I do that, the appearance of the file changes,
specifically, the words "web design" in the logo lose some of the boldness and sharpness
that they had in the FW version.("web design" is vector with a solid fill)  What am I doing wrong?

2 type of dialogs can appear.
    1 ... Replacing file
2 ... Internal Error of FW. (other are same two)
else... you have some problem there.
Well.. jms1017 can you post the dialog screen here? Thanks!

  • Exporting files for web and print at the same time.

been searching a while now and no joy with an answer.
So I want to know 2 things.
Is there an option on LR to export 2 different extensions at once?
So a JPG at say 5mb and one at 500k?
Also would I 'resize to' 1024x768 if I was going to use for web?
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks.

It is possible to pick a desired file size that is too small for the image's pixel dimensions. Where that line is drawn will depend on the individual image.
Normally if you are picking a max file size, you are also resizing the file to be smaller, like your 1024x768 example above. This size would easily be under 500 kb.
