Making a full 4.7Gb dvd

Hi!
I'm Having this problem with my 1.66 mac mini with superdrive:
When I try to burn a DVD+R with 4.7 Gb, the system tells me that it only has 4,38 Gb and that is a DVD-R, therefore I can't do it.
Does anyone knows what seems to be the problem?

What are you trying to burn onto the DVD?
Part of the problem seems to be one of definition of GB. From Wikipedia:
There are two slightly different definitions of the size of a gigabyte in use:
* 1,000,000,000 bytes (or 10 to the 9th power) bytes is the decimal definition used in telecommunications (such as network speeds) and most computer storage manufacturers (such as hard disks and flash drives). This usage is compatible with SI. Quotes from Seagate: "The storage industry standard is to display capacity in decimal", and "One gigabyte, or GB, equals one billion bytes when referring to hard drive capacity", and similar quotes are found on the websites of other storage manufacturers.
* 1,073,741,824 bytes, (equal to 1024 to the 3rd power), or 2 to the 30-power bytes. This is the definition used for computer memory sizes, and most often used in computer engineering, computer science, and most aspects of computer operating systems. The IEC recommends that this unit should instead be called a gibibyte (abbreviated GiB), as it conflicts with SI units used for bus speeds and the like. HP states that Microsoft normally adheres to this definition.

  • Burn 32Gb iPhoto file to 4.7Gb DVD's

I have 2011 Macbook pro. Have 12600 pics file (32GB) I need to copy to 4.7Gb DVD's for backup/security but when I try to upload/burn the file to DVD it says file to big so won't allow sequential burn to 8 DVD's. Is there a way around this?
    Thanks,

That's because a "4.7" GB DVD is 4.7 GB in decimal notation, but is actually 4.38GB in binary, which is the way computers see data.
You get this by dividing the decimal GB by 1.0737.
So you can see that your 4.4 GB is a tad too large for the DVD.
Looking at it the other way, your 4.4GB of data is 4.72 GB the way DVDs are measured.

  • Making an idiot proof presentation DVD with no visible menu

I was asked by a client to deliver final video content on a DVD. It was for a presentation, and I asked if they wanted a menu or if they wanted the content to just play when the disc was inserted in the DVD player. They wanted the ability to have the DVD cued up and then initiate playback when desired. They asked for a "menu" where the screen was simply black, and then they wanted the video content to simply start from black when they hit "play" or "enter."
I wanted to make sure this thing was "idiot proof." I didn't want them to be pressing "enter" and have nothing happen, so I made a button that was the size of the full screen. There was no text and no graphics. Just a giant button zone that was the full width and height of the menu area. This may not have been necessary, but if they were playing this back on a computer and using a mouse to navigate, I wanted the entire screen to be "active." Feel free to let me know if this is silly. With the button selected, I went into the "Colors" tab in the Inspector. I set the "Normal," "Selected," and "Activated" colors all to black and all to 15% opacity. My goal was to have the menu screen completely black with no evidence of anything, and then no indication of anything (color, text, or otherwise) when hitting "play" or "enter" so that the video would just start playing.
"Simulate" gave me the impression that I had achieved the desired result, but unfortunately, when watching the final, burned DVD on a player, there was a grey flash when pressing the "play" (or "enter") button on the remote.
Any thoughts as to why this would be? But really... my main question is "how do I achieve the result I want?" I'm open to setting this up in a completely different way, so you're welcome to tell me that my attempt was flawed from the get-go. My specialty is After Effects, so I'm a relative newbie when it comes to DVD Studio Pro. I may need to be schooled in a serious way.
    Thanks.

I'm a little late, but thank you for answering my question. "The first button on a menu is always in the selected state no matter what," is exactly the kind of basic, fundamental type of information that I was lacking. I ended up making one button which I tagged as "invisible," and that's exactly what I needed.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. Much appreciated.

  • Mail won't open -- says home dir is full, but 7GB is free!

I'm getting an error message when I try to open Mail.app. It says "Mail cannot update your mailbox becuase your home directory is full" And proceeds to quit.
I have over 7GB free on my startup drive. Why does mail think my HD is full?

Go to Home/Library/Mail and move that folder to your Desktop. Then start Mail and a new mail folder with the accounts that already exist will be created. The new mailboxes will be empty unless there's mail you haven't retrieved still on the server.
If mail functions correctly, you can then use the Import Mailboxes feature to import selected mailboxes or manually replace mailboxes from the old Mail folder one at a time to find which mailbox was causing the problem.

  • Is making a copy of a DVD as good quality as burning another original?

I am transfering old video tape onto DVD.  When finished, I will have a dozen different DVDs.  I want to give copies to my family for Christmas.  Burning the first 12 and then making copies seems to be the fastest way to do this.  But will I get a better product if I burn multiple originals from iDVD.
What I don't know is if iDVD is going to render and compress the project for each additional DVD - thus adding hours of production time.  Anyone have a suggestion?

Being digital there should be no quality loss from copy to copy.
The easiest, and quickest, way to burn multiple copies of a DVD is to save the DVD project as a disk image, and burn that in the required number. No rendering is involved.
Bear in mind that your Superdrive can get hot. Give it a rest, and yourself a coffee, after you have burnt 3 or 4 copies!

  • Making photos full screen on an IDVD compilation??

Can I make the photos play full screen on the TV after creating an IDVD video compilation of photos? I have already adjusted the setting to "safe TV screen size". Thanks

Just something to add to JK's post:
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • 2 hour project on 120min/4.7gb DVD

I have a two hour long project on FCP that I need to burn on one dvd that is 120min/4.7gb. I need to use compressor in order to achieve this. Can someone direct me to the process? Thank You

In FCP, go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie. You can choose to make the movie self-contained, or just a reference movie, but do NOT check the option to "Recompress All Frames." Include DVD Studio Pro markers if needed.
Add the resulting file in Compressor. From the list of presets, choose the DVD preset appropriate for your program's duration. Each preset folder will contain a preset for AC3 audio and MPEG-2 video. If needed, you can duplicate a preset then modify it to suit your needs. Once you've chosen the DVD preset and a destination, submit the job. When it is finished, you'll have two files; .ac3 audio and .m2v video.
Import the two files into DVD Studio Pro for authoring and burning.

  • Screen not full size with DVD movie

I have a new iMac and played my first DVD. It was a 16:9 letter box format. The DVD started as a very small picture. I then went to view and set for full screen mode. The movie still only expanded to 70% or so of the screen. Are iMAC not capable of using the entire screen, I thought movie playing was a feature. It looked great and we moved close to the screen, but this cant be right. Ideas?
    Thanks

Thanks for the info. I am still not getting full screen. When I start the DVD the picture size is about 5X12 inches. When I go to the View menue and select full screen it goes up to about 6" X 13 3/4". The usable size of the screen is 10 1/2" X 18 1/2".
After I select full screen from the View menue I do fine the DVD controller appear as you suggested, but the only screen option is the screen icon with inward pointing arrows which make the screen tiny. There are no controls I can find that make the screen larger. I tried going to the apple menue and found various screen resolutions but not controls for changing them.
I have the help service since I just purchased so I guess I'll try to set up a help phone call. Although even that failed to work last time. This is wierd because everything else is so intuitive and logical to resolve.

  • 10GB Video to fit on a 4.7GB DVD

I've recorded a wedding onto mini DV and when I exported the 48min video to quicktime from FCP, the video is 10gb! Will this fit onto a DVD? I wouldn't think so since the DVD says 4.7GB.
I know there's way to compress files and retain quality, but I don't understand it well at all!
    Question.
    1. Is there a way to compress this video from the timeline in FCP to under 4.7GB with good quality? I'm not familiar with compression formats and directions so could you please assist with simple words

+I do have both. But I have little experience with compressor and none with DVD Studio Pro. However, whatever you have to say would greatly assist!+
    Ok,
I'll mention simple steps and I'll try to make them as much clear as I can.
    Why Compressor ?
Compressor will create an Mpeg2 of your edited video and an ac3 (dolby stereo) for the audio (You can't create ac3audio with DVDstudio).
(Use google for any farther information about any word or definition that remains slightly unclear to you).
After that is done burning your DVD with DVDStudio will be quicker and easier.
    Step 1
Once you are done with the edit you can:
either export it straight from the timeline to Compressor (File>Export>Using Compressor)
or create a QT movie (check self-contained in the export window) and import into Compressor after you open it.
If you export it straight from the timeline Compressor will open automatically,
if you wish to use the self-contained QT movie you can still export it from an open FCP project or open Compressor independently. If the the latter is your case once you open Compressor click on *Add File* in the toolbar (top left corner ).
In both cases your video will appear in an untitled project right below the toolbar. You can see the movie (or FCP) icon and the title of your project.
Now, the simplest way to proceed is as follow:
you see the text next to the icon of your movie (in the blue rectangle) saying "drag here settings and destinations"? Now go to the settings window below, you can see the settings and destinations tabs. Go to Settings*>*Apple 4 groups>DVD 10 groups>*DVD best quality 90 minutes* two settings. This is the most common setting to use.
In a nutshell drag the DVD best quality 90 minutes folder over the "drag settings and destinations here" text. Choose your destination. If you click each setting the inspector window activates. Now before we go ahead I suggest you to read the manual and understand the importance of the inspector window and its functions. In particular read about Avarege bit rate, maximum bit rate and in general Variable frame rate (VBR) and constant frame rate. With regard to audio read about ac3.
This time we leave default settings and proceed by clicking the Submit button.
In the preview window, right below the player commands you can see a little arrow and a date, click on the arrow and you can see that Compressor is encoding your video.
    Step 2
When the encoding process is over open DVDstudio.
See the first button of the toolbar , top left? Click on Import Asset, find your encoded audio and video files and open them.
Now since your movie has been already compressed video(Mpeg2) and audio (ac3) they will show in the assets tab below the graphical tab followed by two green lights.
From now follow Shane Ross's steps from point 3 if you don't want a menu.
If you want the menu there's a simple video tutorial that came with FCP 2. Take a look at that.
    Hope this helps,
    G.
PS. BTW yes, 10 GB DV once compressed will easily fit in a DVD

  • Making VOB Files Play on DVD Player

I am using MPEG Streamclip to create edited VOB or TS files of personal DVD recordings. I can burn these files onto a data DVD, but I can only use my computer to play them. What I need is some kind of application that I can point to all of my VOB or TS files and it would create a IFO playlist in a VIDEO_TS folder that would run on my DVD player. I hope that makes sense. Basically, I need to go from a folder full of VOB video files to a DVD that will run on a DVD Player.
    Thanks in advance!

If you still have Toast 6, please update it least to version 6.0.9. Previous Toast versions could alter audio/video sync of muxed MPEG files. Some versions of Toast may have trouble burning some MPEGs with mp2 audio -- a workaround is to demultiplex the MPEG to m2v and m1a (or aiff) with MPEG Streamclip and burn them with Toast. Toast may lose audio sync or be too picky and reject some MPEGs -- a workaround is to demultiplex the MPEG to m2v and aiff with MPEG Streamclip and burn them with Toast. Converting to "Headed" MPEG adds a special header to the MPEG file that lets you import unsupported frame sizes into Toast 6 or 7 and skip recompression. However, DVDs made from "headed" MPEG files are not guaranteed to work with all players.
Sizzle does not have encoding capabilities. Maybe it is just re-muxing the files?

  • Encoding process isn't working properly while making the disk image (or DVD)in my iDVD program.   Is there a remedy for this?

I've used Old Toad's suggestion and made a disk image first because the DVDs I've tried to produce show a few pictures in playback and then go white.  The slideshow works fine in the iDVD program, and in the initial rendering stage all seems o.k. until the encoding step.  Then, it processes 4 or 5 pictures, then goes blank but the music continues to be processed.  Is there a remedy for this (I know Apple has ditched the program and the optical drives.)  I deleted the project and tried making it over from scratch, but no luck.

I am simply lookig for some help not an argument.  I am not an RF specialist however have setup a few wireless networks in my tenure at Wynn Resorts.  I fully agree that wireless networking is an art and a science however the powers that be in Network Land have toughted wireless networking is the easiest and quickest way to get two computers to talk with one another.  As I previously said I have already turned one (1) MBP in for this problem and Apple decided to replace it because they could not fix the problem with my particular MBP.  This MBP was running Leopard when the problems started
I am having a hard time believeing that there are several other devicces in my home that depend on a wireless network to operate and my MBP is the only one having an issue.  I took this a step further and decided to see what would happen if I tried to connect wirelessly via Fusion.  In Windows 7 I am able to print and scan to my hearts content without any issues.  I am able to browse the internet as much as I want.  I close Fusion and try to connect to my printer via wireless and nothing.
In order to get Apple to help do I need to get a Network Analyzer and capture packets when I have these problems?  Out of the 1000 + posts is there a consolidation of which answer is the best?  BTW I am accessing the internet via a wireless connection using Fusion and Windows 7.
In response to Linc's comments, I will look at the router specifications however I did not qualify that these devices are not using the wireless connection at the same time.  Right now I would guess there are maybe two (2) or three (3) at the most that are actively transmitting / receiving information. --  Thanks

  • Burning 4.7GB DVD+R on "Older" mac drive?

I have a G4 tower with a DVD burner. Recently it started spitting out any new DVD+R I put in it and couldn't read or write to it. I looked on the Apple site and found a footnote that says "older" drives can't handle the 4.7 GB disks. Is there any way around this or another program I can use to burn from iDVD now? I cant seem to find any blank DVD's that aren't 4.7GB anymore. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Yes, a very definite difference. Most DVD Players out there support DVD-R. A very few only support DVD+R, and only the most modern players and burners support playback and burning to DVD+R. First for finding out what your burner can do, see this article:

  • Making My "Reel" from Assorted DVDs and VHSes

Over the years, I've made a lot of films for National Geographic, Discovery and other companies, and usually I've gotten a VHS (in the old days) or a DVD (in the new) of the final show with credits, etc.
What I'd like to do, in the simplest and cheapest way possible, is use Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro to make a professional reel of my work -- my greatest hits, as it were.
What is the recommended method for getting both the admittedly crappy VHS material and the better DVD material into my computer in a format that allows me to import it into Final Cut?
I do own a DVD recorder, if that helps. I realize that I'm going to have to record the VHS material onto a DVD to create a digital version of it. I'd like to know the exact work flow, how many pieces of software I will need to acquire, and why.
    Many thanks,
    PS

    I'm with Jim on this,
if you worked on those shows, you should be able to get tx copies (full broadcast spec) copy them onto your preferred format (for showreels there is no reason to go above DV res really)
rent a deck - I like and use sony J30, & DSR1800 both firewire connectable
then have fun, only software you require is Humaneffort v6.07 and FC (but you knew that otherwise you wouldn't have posted)
If you are stuck with VHS & DVD, mac the ripper or similar and a cheap A to D converter, its not going to look great though
best to get those original masters I think
    good luck
