Making a image have a transparent background

I was given a image and asked to use it as a logo for a website. It is a black image with a white background. How do I get a transparent background so I can post the image on a web page and only see the image and not the white background it has? I am using photoshop elements 5.0. Thanks.

For me, best solution for extracting an image from its background is using a terrific plug-in for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. It's called GML Matting. It's free, functions flawlessly and you can create some amazing images with it. I save the extracted images with transparent backgrounds as PSDs.
You can download it here: http://research.graphicon.ru/image-processing/gml-matting-6.html
Select the latest version from the menu. After it's installed, you'll find it at the bottom of the Filters pull-down.
I've used it with Elements 2, 5 and 7.
How well does it work? You can decide. I took two photos, one of my Jeep parked in a parking lot, overlooking a quiet bay. Then I took another photo of the rough surf on the ocean side of the island. Using Elements 5 with the GML Matting plug-in, I extracted the Jeep and its shadow and dropped the image onto the photo of the surf. It took about 30 minutes to clean up edges (using various Elements tools). When completed, the resulting image is virtually impossible to detect as a composite.
Here's the finished image: http://home.att.net/~historyworld/OceanBeachJeep.jpg
You can see a review of the plug-in and see the images to create my composite by scrolling through the linked thread below (on the Photocamel forums). http://photocamel.com/forum/image-editing-color-management/48945-free-background-removal- software.html

  • How do you make an image have a transparent background?

i brought an image from PS into Illustrator and i want to put it in AE and use the puppet tool. however, when i bring it in it has a white background, but i just what the object i am going to puppet, so how do i do that?

AE does not require an image to be sent through Illy first. Just make sure your image has a transparent background and/or an alpha channel if need, then save as a psd file. In AE bring the psd file in as footage, unless you need a compostion and folder for the psd created in the project list. You should then be able to use the puppet tool on an image with a transparent background.

  • Need a graphic to have a transparent background

I have a graphic with a white background, but i need it to have a transparent background. I have erased all the white on a new layer, but when i save it as a jpeg it still has a white background. The backgound layer is locked and wont let me delete it. What do i have to do to make the white backgound go away?

    Hi there,
Nathanalf is correct; you need to save as a .psd, .gif, or .png depending on the ultimate purpose for the image.
It sounds like you are having some issues with deleting a background layer. To do so, follow these steps:
    1) Here I have an image with two layers: one with an original image ("background"), and one that I want to become the final transparent image. The background layer is hidden so you can see the transparent area.
    2) Here I made the background layer visible. You should be able to simply drag the layer from the layers panel to the trash can at the bottom of the panel, but if not, double click on the layer in the layers panel. This will open a dialog where you can rename the layer and will unlock it.
    3) Drag the unlocked layer to the trash can to delete it.
    To save as a .png:
    1) Go to File > Save As
    2) Under format, select .PNG. In the following dialog boxes, choose Save and OK.
    I hope this helps!

To get to the best forum, use the links at the top of this page, under where it says "Creating, Editing and Exporting PDF". They say
Adobe Community > Acrobat > Creating, Editing & Exporting PDFs > Discussions
These links appear on most web sites today to help people find their way around, and they are called, in the jargon, "breadcrumbs".
The first link takes you to the master list of forums
The second link takes you to the Acrobat forums. There you will find one called Rich Media and 3D.
I'm no expert, though, but it seemed a pretty clear reply saying you can't do what you want to do. But I wouldn't put much weight on what I think about that point.

  • How to create image slice with transparent background without white halo around?

Hi, I want to make slice image with transparent background. I set the slice option background color to my background color. But when the image is on my html page set against the same background color, it has white halo around:
How can I get rid of the white halo?
I need the slice image to have transparent background and not have a color background because it's going on a rollover button with the background change. I don't want it to look like this on rollover:

    >it looks to me like you built it with that "halo" to start with.
No, I didn't put in the halo myself. The shape is a character from the Webdings font. It's set to some darker fill color and set on a transparent background. Photoshop put the white halo there after "Save For Web".
    > Make your graphic on a transparent background and Save for Web
    I did exactly that, see:
I set the slice background to my color. I try the Matte option and come out the same with white halo.
It seems I'm not making Photoshop antialias to my background color, instead Photoshop just antialias to white.
What else do I need to do?

  • Permanently removing part of an image from a transparent background png file

Hello, I think I know the answer to this question, but I wanted to double check.  I am new to Photoshop and do not know all the functions.  I have a png transparent background file of a tree with a lot of branches.  I want to erase some of the branches so they are just permanently gone.  I would like to use this image on different backgrounds so I am looking to just erase the branches all together.  Is this possible?  If not in Photoshop, perhaps another adobe program?  Thank you!

If you want to permanently delete the branches then you can just erase them using the eraser tool. I would always suggest keeping the original file just in case something goes wrong and you want to start again. So just open the .png, save a new version and start erasing the branches you want.

  • Extract part of image & save with transparent background

What is the best way to extract part of an image & save it with a transparent background?  I had hoped to the extracted images in 2 different ways.
Firstly just to paste into another image.
Secondly I'd like to try to open both the extracted item as well as the whole original photo in different video editing programs including Premiere Elements & sony Vegas.  What is the best  way to do this?

    Here's what you could do.
First make sure you have both images open in editor
    1. Open the image and select the area using the magnetic lasso/quick selection tool.
    2.  Select Layer -> New -> Layer Via Copy
    3. Now in the layers palette, right click the layer and select 'Dulicate Layer'
    4. In the duplicate layer dialog, in document - select the other image, where you would like to paste the image to.
    5. You and ajust the poition of the pasted area/resize it using the move tool or transform tool (Ctrl + T).
    6. Save the image with a new name
If you simply want to save the image with transparency (after step #2) - you may -
    > hide the previous layer and Save the image as a png/gif so transparency is presereved.
    Hope that helps.
When you have teh saved documents you can open them up in different editors.

  • When I copy an image with a transparent background into an image editing program like Photoshop, I get a black background

I'm wondering if there's a way to preserve transparency, or even change the color of the background to white.
I often need to get reference pictures for my artwork, and it is a pain to have to save every image and the black background often makes it difficult to see the image, especially when the image has only black pixels.
    Help?

You can try to drag the image in a Photoshop window instead.<br />
If that still doesn't work then you need to save the image and open it in Photoshop.

  • I need to make an exsisting logo have a transparent background

    Good Morning
I have a logo (attached) which currently has a white background and I need to make it transparent for use on my web page. I have a manual but am finding it confusing. Would really appreciate an answer in simple terms as I am new to this.
    Barry

First rename the Background layer to anything else; it is sufficient to double click the layer in the Layers Palette and acccept the default name "Layer 0". Then remove the background using various PSE tools. The background will be replaced by a checkerboard pattern indicating transparency.
Since your background is a solid color, you can use the Magic Wand to select it. In my example below I used the Magic Wand default options: Tolerance 32, Anti-aliased and Contiguous boxes checked. Holding down <Shift>, click in the white areas until all of it is selected (it took me 2 clicks), then <Delete>. This however may not select all of it. For purposes of example I added a red layer at the bottom. You can see that a few timy areas were not selected so you can manually remove these with the Eraser tool; zoom way in, choose a small hard Eraser brush size, and paint or click on the pixels.
In this logo it also works if you uncheck the Contiguous box and then one click in the white selects it all (except again for the few stray pixels). However, be careful doing this since the click might select areas within the logo. Here I unchecked the Contiguous box, set Tolerance to 60, and clicked on the white background; some white on the SHRUBBERIES letter were selected:
Anyway, once you have deleted the background save the file in a format that supports transparency. PSD, TIFF, PNG,  PNG, GIF, EPS support transparency. JPG, BMP do not. For Web applications, you probably want GIF.
Note: the reason for renaming the Background layer is that areas deleted on this layer are replaced not by transparency but by the current color as defined in the background color swatch at the bottom of the toolbar.

  • How do you make a photo have a transparent background

I have a photo of a fire truck outside of the fire department. I want to remove the background and select only the truck itself. I then want to be able to have it transparent when I put the picture on a scrapbook page. I do not want a white box background. What steps are needed to accomplish this. I currently have Photoshop Elements 6. Thanks!
    Teresa

Use one of the selection tools. lasso tool for example, to select the truck
Go to Edit>copy. This puts it on the computer's clipboard
    Open the scapbook background
Go to Edit paste. The truck should be on a separate layer
Access the move tool, position the truck.
You can resize using the corner handles of the bounding box while holding down the shift key

  • How do I know if an image has a transparent background when looking in Bridge?

In Photoshop I can see the transparency grid and so can quickly tell, in bridge I can not see the transparency grid but there must be some way to tell. As an example of my work flow, if I have out put a load of icons which need transparency on them how can I check in bridge to make sure I have output them correctly?
On the File Properties I can see Bit Depth, Colour Mode, Doc Type but it does not tell you anything about alpha channels.

When I click on "Where did the error occur" -> "Adapter Engine", I do not have a choice of errors from the dropdown. I only see one option "*".
    Is this right?

    I see.
I've also managed to overcome this problem by selecting "Subscription Authorization" in the Alert Category Definition page, and entering SAP_XI_MONITOR as one of the roles.
After that, I am able to see a the alert category defined. By default it's already subscribed, because I'm using the same user - PISUPER.
I saw in another post that the option "Suppress Multiple Alerts of this Rule" should be left unchecked. I tried that, but I still do not see any alerts raised in ALRTDISP.
    What did I miss?
    Please help.
    Thanks.

  • How to have a transparent background after saving as a jpeg?

    Hi guys!
I designed this logo for a couple that are starting their own business. Problem is they never told me that they wanted to print the logo into T-shirt that are a Daisy yellow color. As of now we are trying to find the HTML code for the yellow in the shirts so I can match the background of the logo to the shirt because the problem they are having is that when they print the logo on the shirt it comes out squared and the logo in the middle. The logo its self its oval shaped. As an alternative and probably easier way to solve the problem I'm trying to send them just the logo shape but I've trimmed the excess background to a point where it cannot be trimmed anymore and there still is a white background to it, Probably my explanation its a bit confusing but ultimately I'm trying just to send them the logo with no white background at all. I need help with that. How to save the file and send it so they can open it still with no background color?
    Please help me ASAP!!!
    THANKS
    CAGE Graphics

JPG files are not compatible with transparency.  You need to save as GIF or PNG, but make sure the unwanted area shows as the checkerboard in Photoshop before saving.
It is always a good idea to ask the printer what works best for them.  I suspect there would be specific requirements for printing on material, but we don't know if this going to be screen print, or iron on or what.

  • Now in iBooks on the iPad in library view have a transparent background can I reset it to solid colours

When are we going to have some input into how iBooks behaves. I want/need to edit metadata just the same as I can with songs but it hasn't been implemented in iBooks YET.
Looking forward to Sir Jony delivering a fix to this lamentable omission.
PS I'm a "Limey" and not biased against Aluminium People.
    iansai

You can turn off transparency via Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast > Reduce Transparency 'on' - that will affect all apps, not just iBooks.
For editing metadata you can leave feedback for Apple (these are user-to-user forums) via this page : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ibooks_ios.html

  • How to save transparent background images to have transparent background thumbnails with Photoshop 2014?

In old versions of Photoshop there was a feature that made thumbnail images have a transparent background.  I'm a CC member using Photoshop 2014 on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.4 and every thumbnail of a transparent background image I've created in Photoshop 2014 appears on my desktop with a solid white box background that has a thin black outlined box inside of it.  How do I save the transparent background images I've created in Photoshop 2014 so they will appear on my desktop as thumbnails with a transparent background?   I'd like to continue to be able to replace the default background-less folder icon that that appears on files with transparent background thumbnails to customize my files as I use to do with older versions of Photoshop.

If your layered document has a Photoshop background layer it visibility need to be set off when saving a PNG or Gif file for Photoshop background layers do not support transparency.
Thumbnail may be a bit more complicated than you think. I do not use Lightroom, and only occasionally use the bridge.  I believe Lightroom and Bridge  keep thumbnails they develop for image files  in their library databases and caches.  Other programs do not have acces to  these.  RAW Files and Image files have Jpeg previews stored in then.  I believe most application use these previews jpeg to create thumbnails.  Jpeg format does not support transparency.
Icon on the desktop are not always thumbnails some are embedded icons in application modules other are icon in dll these may well have transparency. However image file on the desktop have generated thumbnails.  However you can create a shortcut for an image png file and create a icon with a transparent background for the png file and change the shortcut's icon for the png file to the transparent ico file you created for it.
Also many Photoshop release ago an Adobe module created Thumbnails for image files in Windows File explorer and most likely system file dialog. Adobe stopped supporting that stating Microsoft changes how windows works.
Today I use FastPictureViewer Codec Package to generate image thumbnails for image files including RAW and PSD files in File Explorer and system file dialogs.
I don't use a Mac don't know what available for your Mac.
