Making a larger cursor??

Somewhere I once read about being able to set the cursor to a larger size? I've got too many screens going right now ... too much landscape to find that little cursor in.
Any suggestions?
All ears,
Ben

HI Ben,
Open System Preferences/Universal Access and click the Mouse tab. Where you see:
For difficulties seeing the mouse... use that slider to increase the cursor size.

  • Large cursors for VI users

I would like to install large cursors for visual impaired Adobe Acrobat or Reader users. Microsoft Windows allows a range of options for large cursors, but these are not available to use in Adobe products. VI users effectively lose the cursor when it changes to a highlight icon, for example. Any suggestions?

What do you call a high number of open cursors? The database default is 256 I believe, but I have seen values of 500-1000 as a normal value too.

  • Very large cursor

Using most applications, Stickies, TextEdit, Quark, the initial display cursor is very large, 1.5". I can type and the text is the usual size, I think Helvetica 12 pt as default, but the cursor is still way too big. When I change the point size of the text either larger or smaller, the cursor eventually becomes a normal size.
Also, Mac Help menu displays the text of the help pages with gigantic spacing between each line of type, even though the text is normal size.
It's as if the default leading has become very large, although I haven't made that change that I know of.
Any ideas of what to do?

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Open your System Preferences/Universal Access preference pane, check in "Seeing" to insure that "Zoom" isn't selected.
Also check the settings for "Mouse"- you can move the slider to change the size of the cursor.

  • Making a large banner

this was my first time creating a huge project. it was a 12ft long banner.
    using illustrator i created it.
ok so first i set the rasterizing effects to 300ppi. was i not suppose to? i gave me a probe saying i had to much artwork or something... but then it worked...
then i stretched a large photo a bit and it didn't look like it pixelated at all so i was happy......it was just a texture for the background set to overlay....you can barely see it....
the worst is the gradient under the texture. its totally pixelated in the background.
annoyed i went to photoshop and tried making the gradient and it still looked pixelated!!!!
    help

    Eric,
When discussing appropriate raster image resolution, a little technical understanding is necessary, but common sense applies.
Digital printing devices make tiny fixed-size marks called printer spots. Printer spots do not vary in size (expressed as Spots Per Inch).
Printer spots are used to "build up" images of halftone dots which varying size in order to suggest to the human eye varying tints of the ink(s).
Raster images consist of square pixels.
If the square pixels of the raster image being printed are scaled to a size large enough for their square shape to be rendered by the pattern of roundish halftone dots, that's when "pixelation" (aka "jaggies") occurs. So there is a relationship between the size of the scale of the image pixels (expressed as Pixels Per Inch) and the frequency of the halftone dots (expressed as Lines Per Inch) that will be used to render them.
There is a much too-often cited myth that "everything in print should be rasterized to 300 ppi." That is nonsense. The rule-of-thumb is 1 to 2 times the halftone ruling, and that rule-of-thumb assumes normal size print viewed at hand-held distance.
    Therefore:
For normal hand-held printing like magazines, newspapers, etc., anything between 1 to 2 times the halftone ruling is servicable for most grayscale or full color raster objects. That's a range. It doesn't mean that "if 1 x halftone ruling is okay, then 2 x halftone ruling must be great." It does not mean that, for any given image, 300 PPI is automatically better than 225 PPI or 150 PPI, or any other resolution. For most photographs, properly sharpened and placed on the page at 100%, 1.5 x the halftone ruling is just fine, and going higher is usually just needless overkill.
Example: Typical magazine ad. Web printed on coated stock with a halftone ruling of 150 LPI: 225 PPI for your raster photos is fine, assuming they are properly sharpened and are not enlarged after placing on your page layout.
Example: Typical newspaper ad. Web printed on crappy uncoated newsprint with a haftone ruling of 100 LPI: 150 PPI for your raster photos is fine, assuming they are properly sharpened and are not enlarged after placing on your page layout.
Note that the above assumes photos. Photos are not the only raster images used. Read on.
Whenever you resort to raster images just to achieve a continuous-tone grad or soft fuzzy shadow or whatever (in other words, raster effects), just using a PPI equal to the halftone ruling is a gracious plenty. Your concern in such situations is not to preserve any pristine detail or subtle texture of some photographer's "masterpiece." Your only concern about a fuzzy drop shadow or glow is to avoid noticable pixelation (jaggies). What is pixelation? It's just the condition of the squareness of the raster image pixels being visible to the viewer.
Now considering that halftone dots are round and that image pixels are square, ask yourself this question: Can the shape of a square ever be faithfully rendered by a single round dot? No. So as long as your square pixels are not larger than the halftone dots that will be used to render them, will anyone be able to detect the stair-stepped squareness of the grayscale or color pixels? No.
But there's another use for raster images other than photos: 1-bit raster images printed as a solid (raster line art). Often, 1-bit solid-colored raster images do not become halftoned at all. They are built up not out of relatively course halftone dots, but out of the much smaller printer spots that a printing device uses in order to build halftone dots. Those tiny printer spots, then, are much more capable of rendering the squareness of the pixels in your 1-bit raster image. So in that kind of situation, you want to use a raster PPI fine enough to look smooth to the naked eye, even if it is stair-stepped.
That doesn't mean you have to make the PPI of 1-bit raster images equal to the SPI capability of the imaging device. Typically, PostScript imagesetters are capable of printing at least 2540 SPI. But on all but the sharpest printing on high-quality coated stock, few viewers are going to see the jaggedness of a 1200 PPI solid.
Now note that all the above assumes normal hand-held viewing distance. Read on.
Is anyone going to read a 12-foot-wide banner at arm's length? Of course not. All large format printing is done so that something can be read at a longer-than-arm's-length distance. So you can think of the viewing distance as a "down scale" factor which achieves the same purpose as what is considered "normal" PPI at "normal" hand-held reading distance. You can make a big study of it if you want to, but the end result is that you can pretty much use the same PPI that is appropriate for something designed for hand-held distance, and blow the whole thing up (including the halftone dots) to larger scale for distance viewing.
That's why if you both to check (which is not difficult to do; just take a pocket ruler and approach a billboard next chance you get), you'll find that very large format halftone printing involves halftone rulings as low as 50 or even 30 LPI. So if, for example, you assume a large format halftone ruling of 50 LPI, what can you safely assume as a practical range for the raster PPI when enlarged to that scale? Remember: 1-to-2-times the halftone ruling; therefore, 50 to 100 PPI.
Now...realize again that all the above, for the sake of explanation, is presented in the context of halftone printing. You have not yet specified the printing device, what halftone ruling will be used, or whether halftoning will be used at all.
Nowadays, large format composite digital printers designed for one-off prints (or very low print runs) don't use halftoning at all. Instead of using their printer spots to "assemble" halftone dots to simulate tints, they randomly distribute their printer spots more sparsely for light tints and more densely for dark tints. In other words, instead of varying the size of uniformly-spaced halftone dots, they vary the spacing of uniformly-sized printer spots. The method is generally referred to as stochastic screening, and it is far more common than you think; it is the screening method most commonly used in most so-called "photo quality" desktop inkjet printers. It is also nowadays most commonly used in large format printers.
Stochastic screening allows relatively low-resolution (low SPI) devices to achieve what looks like greater detail than what would result if those relatively course printer spots had to be "used up" to build halftone dots. So generally speaking, stochastic screening can render acceptable sharpness and detail on lower resolution devices--which in turn also require lower PPI raster resolution. So even if you use the halftone-centric rules-of-thumb, stochastic screening works to your advantage. (Think of it as an additional measure of "safety margin.")
So there may be some other factor coming into play if your printer is telling you that your images (which sound to me to be grossly oversampled) are "pixelating". For one long-common example, when you print a format intended for a PostScript device (EPS content) to a non-PostScript printer, what gets printed is a screen-resolution raster "placeholder" raster image. That problem afflicts even the vector content of an EPS file.
You need to specify the output device type, screening method, and the details of the workflow (file formats, etc.) you are using. Also be aware: you can't always be sure the output provider actually understands the matters described above any better than you do.
Also how do they have those huge posters hanging in Manhattan with pictures of people? Arent those jpeg's?
Why would you assume that a large format print is necessarily printed from a JPEG file?

  • Larger Cursor on the Front Panel

    Hello,
I wanted to know if anyone knows how to make the mouse cursor on the front panel larger.  I looked at the Cursor VIs built into LabVIEW, but it seems none of them actually change the size of the cursor, but just the cursor image.
    Thank you,

Thank you for your help.  I am using Windows XP.
The link you sent does the same thing as the Create Cursor From File.vi that is part of the cursor VIs in LV, see the attached image.  The VIs you mentioned were written in LV 5 and I think that was before they had the built in cursor VIs.
It looks like you can use the Create Cursor From File.vi to create a custom cursor, but I think the size is limited to 16 X 16 image. So it wouldn't make the cursor any larger.  I think what I need to some way to scale the cursor itself not just change the image.
Any help you can give me would be great.

  • Feature Request - custom crop default & making canvas larger

Please make lightroom quicker for people who use 8x10 instead of the original proportions from your camera.  I am aware of the trick to copy and paste or sync with crop,  however if lightroom could have a way to setup at a default custom crop so it loads up that way when first used, and keeps the crop as the default from one photo to the next that would be great!
It would also be nice if when cropping and you need to make the canvas larger and go outside of the original dimensions of the photo that lightroom does this automatically.  Right now I only know to use the scaling feature, it would be much quicker to just add this logic to lightroom so it scales outside of the photo when you are cropping if thats what you would like it to do.
    Thank you!

Brett  I dont think you understand my question.  theres two parts to it.
When you crop and select the aspect ratio theres no way to make this a default, so each time when i get to a new image i need to select 8x10 again.  if 8x10 was made to be my default lightroom would not crop out some of the pixels unless I choose the crop tool and use the crop tool.  I am just looking for lightroom to be faster its annoying how it defaults to the original image dimensions for the crop tool each time you select the crop tool you have to change the crop ratio.
The second request is one that rawshooter used to do automatically when you use the crop tool you can easily crop outside of the dimensions of the photo, thus making the canvas larger.  this gives you an image that you can place into photoshop and fill the empty spots, this helps change the composition of the image if shot with the model in the center you can easily move the model with a crop and by filling the background in the new empty space especially easy with a simple background.  I hope this helps, its easier to do more with lightroom.  i do it right now with the scale feature in lightroom, but it would be faster if lightroom did it automatically if you pull the crop tool outside of the image area.  Thank you!

  • Changing Canvas size to be smaller, is actually making it larger?

    Hello,
OK, I have changed Canvas size a thousand times in my life and this has never happened before.
I have an image that is 1600 px wide and I want to trim the sides to 1260. When I start to even type in the smaller size, the file size indicated is larger (that was my first suspicion that something was not right). And sure enough, it is making the image larger?
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

  • Please Help. Mom's Glaucoma Needs Large Cursor To Type With

    Hello!
I really desperately need help here. My mom has glaucoma and still trying to write long letters to her fam and friends. She prefers a black background and white lettering with Arial 72, bue still has bad trouble trying to see a cursor to move the mouse by. I'm trying to use Mariner Write and OpenOffice and Bean and Text Edit to find a program that can oversize the cursor or turn it into a thick block cursor and if possible change it to a red color for better contrast as well. I went through the docs and manuals of these programs but they don't seem to allow you to change the cursor much. Is there any way?
I'll be posting this at those text processor forum sites as well, but in case any of you here know any tricks I'm posting here too, hopefully in the right topic.
We'd appreciate any help at all!

  • Making the mouse cursor invisible.

I am currently in the deployment phase of software made for two touchscreen kiosks.
When moving the applications over to these kiosks I realized that we needed to make the mouse cursor invisible.
    I have tried the
Cursor cursor = new Cursor();// ALthough i was unable to find a cursor constant that gave me an invisible pointer.
    testFrame.setCursor(cursor);
Any ideas how I could remove the pointer from view alltogether?

    Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
    Image image = tk.getImage("yourPicture.gif");
    Cursor invisibleCursor = tk.createCustomCursor(image, new Point(0,0), "invisible cursor");I usually use a 1 x 1 transparent gif.

  • Time Machine on Mavericks making excessively large backups

I recently upgraded from Mavericks from Mountain Lion. Previously when TM would backup the files, the incremental file size of each backup would be anywhere between 50Mb to 1Gb depending on my activity during that part of the day. Over all, I would have a backup history spanning 1 or 2 months (always varied).
After upgrading to Mavericks, my backups are huge!! Averaging 7-10Gb EACH TIME!! Now my history only spans 2 days! My backup drive is small, about 500Gb so it doesn't take long to fill up with these excessively large backups.
As a test I waited until a back up had just completed, then, with out doing anything, I would immediately initiate a back up. Again, after it prepared the back up and it started, it said the backup size was 7Gb. Normally it would be less than a couple Mb, but 7Gb!!
I have several folders excluded (mostly folders for caches), so I can't imagine where all the sizes are coming from. I'm thinking that previously backed up files are not being properly marked as backed up and therefore are being backed up multiple times. Ideas?

I decided to take one more look at my current backups using one of the suggested programs, Time Tracker. Low and behold, I found that my Wiki Logs for the Sever was ranging in the 6 Gb territory! Once I excluded that, it dropped it down to a much more managable 1 Gb backup. I ran it manually 3 more times after than and it dropped to 600 Mb and now on the last one 178 Mb ... that was the problem. I wonder why it wasn't recognizing the Wiki logs properly. Doesn't really matter, I don't use Wiki for my server so I don't need to back up the logs! Problem fixed!

  • Can I prevent preview from making files larger?

This thread finds that Preview makes PDFs larger in 10.6 and 10.8. I have experienced this from 10.6 through 10.10.1 (staying up to date all the while).
How do I prevent this from happening? Is there any sign that Apple will make a PDF editor as useful as Acrobat anytime soon?
    Other Info
    - I often sanitize PDFs in Acrobat to eliminate issues
    - I often text encode (OCR) PDFs in Acrobat (because I need to)
(Why I don't use Acrobat: because it can't do full screen and it is the opposite of the minimalist style I prefer)

    Oh oops!
    Forgot it
    Just changed my message!
    Thanks for reminding me.

  • Larger cursors in PS 7.0

I can change the default cusor in XP Pro but it doesn't carry over to PS. The preferences/display&cursors tab is limited.
What I need is a heavier cursor or full cross hairs. I'm running 1920 x 1200 on a 22 inch Sony LCD screen. With aging eyes it's too difficult to pick up the tiny cross cursor on various photo backgrounds.
    Any ideas?
    Chas.

What I don't understand is how Adobe still only seems to offer a single-pixel wide set of tool cursors. That was fine back when most people had 640 x 480 screens or with $ and luck 800 x 600.
When are they going to get with it??? Pixels are much finer on modern displays.

  • Macbook air and making things larger

i was able to make most things larger in my macbook air's mail program, i like to view it the older way.
have not been able to make the area of the Mailbox names larger, the section on the left side, does anyone know they type of font it is and how to make it larger.
also on safari the tab bar words are way to small for me, any way to get them larger?

I don't exactly know what you want to sync or what kind of expectations you had but I keep my MBA in sync with my desktop (iMac) for some of the content. I use a program called Synk to keep various folders the same so I can take stuff home or on the road to work on. There are other such programs. It is not exactly hands off as little things can cause conflicts in the sync process but it works well enough for me with a little oversight. My mail is "synced" because I use IMAP. If you had MobileMe you could also sync contacts and calendars. There are other options for that as well (e.g. Dropbox). To go beyond that, I guess you could backup everything (at least user files) to a portable drive on one machine and then restore that backup to the other computer but I think that would be too tedious.
