Making a Mac OS 9 installer CD from a backup...?

Hello! I have a MacBook Pro with Leopard, and a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet with OS 8.6. I am trying to upgrade the Powerbook to OS 9. The problem is, I have misplaced my OS 9 Installer CD which I got new with another Mac a few years back. Luckily, I did make a copy from that CD which I still have on my computer. Is there a way that I can take this copy .dmg and make a new OS 9 installer CD from it? I've spent the past 3 days trying to figure it out, and I have had no luck. Thank you!

I've tried this already, the G3 rejects everything. Even when I put other things on the CD-R (like applications). When put the CD in the drive, it pops up with a message that the disk can't be used because it is locked or something, and it has to be initialized. When I click "Initialize," it tells me that it has to erase the disk. When I agree to that, it immediately spits the disk out. I think that my MacBook is putting the CD's in a format that the G3 can not read, but I have no idea how to write the CD in a format that the G3 will accept.

I have just got a new macbook which I would like to download my copy of CS5.5 onto. It doesn't have a disc insertion section section so I downloaded CS5 from the adobe website. However I can't install it because my computer says the installer is from an unidentified developer. Can you help please?

That's Apple OS X's Gatekeeper kicking in.
Control+click the downloaded file and click Open to manually tell OS X that you trust the file and it's OK to open it.

  • Making atabase clone (but without data=rows) from hot-backup

    Hi,
I am newbie in Oracle administration. I am using Oracle 10g database. I would like to clone database i.e. make an exact copy of tablespaces, tables, indexes, triggers, functions etc. but without data.
What is the most efficient way to do it.? I am having the full hot backup of another database. Is it possible to restore a that backup using rman but without data (=rows) on the fresh installed oracle database
    Thanks for any advice
    Groxy

I don't think RMAN has the feature you are looking for.
For this purpose, it could be easier to use:
    - either old export with FULL=Y ROWS=N
    - or new data pump export with CONTENT=METADATA_ONLY.
However in both cases you would need to recreate the empty database before importing the export file.

I wonder if Apple is reading this thread. ?????????
NO... What did you expect the phone to do when you restore from a backup.
You should've imported the new pics to your computer as you would a digital camera..

  • My mac pro restarts when waking from sleep

    Hello everyone pls help me.
I have a annoying problem and that is that my Mac Pro restarts after it has been to sleep.
Last week I updated the system with an update from Apple, safteyupdate 2013-003 version 1.0.
    I have swedish OsX 10.6.8.
After this update my mac always restarts after waking from sleep.
So what may have gone wrong?
Pls help me in a simple way, and pls describe in easy steps if I have to do something.

One suggestion is to always have cloned your system ahead of time, that means before making changes or updates, early on when it is fresh and working.
And don't just restart. Use Safe Mode at least, better yet use Recovery Mode if on Lion (which I do recommend) and have a small OS Emergency drive for any maintenance - along with a clone working copy of your system.
Don't just reinstall over your system. Do a fresh install on another drive. Image it and set that for maintenance, then clone that to be a new working base for your system.
Setup Assistant does an amazing job.
Forced restarts can corrupt the filesystem and directory as the changes in memory or cache are not written out and drives are not unmounted properly and will come to bite in the rear.

  • I am new to mac's and have upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion but......

I am new to mac's and have upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion but not all my application will work. Is it save to reinstall using original snow leopard dvd and does it wipe all my other application like apature? I am in a panic over this, any help!!
I came across this online and i want to know is it safe to do this:
Backup your User folders to an external drive. This should preserve your documents, photos, music, etc. If you store those things in locations not in the User folder, make sure to copy those over too.
Insert the Snow Leopard disc. Restart your Mac and hold down C to boot to your DVD drive.
Go to Utilities in the menu bar once the installer pops up and select “Disk Utility.”
Find the drive in the sidebar where Lion is installed, select it and navigate to the Partition tab.
Click on the drop down menu under Partition Layout and select “1 Partition.” Hit Apply.
Now navigate to the Erase tab and make sure “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” is selected, then hit Erase to delete all data on the drive.
Quit Disk Utility to get back to the Snow Leopard installer and proceed with the install.
Restore your User folder and documents from your backup.
Run Software Update to get everything current, install your apps from your original install media and update those as well.
if any one can help me that would be great, thanks Mike

Before you do that why not do this first:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If this doesn't help, then you can proceed to reinstall Snow Leopard as follows:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard. I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
This will erase the drive so be sure to backup your files before doing this.

You can't get there with GUID/GPT.
There are tips on making a USB flash device that is bootable.
You can set aside a small 6GB partition somewhere and put Windows 7 installer there and run it WHILE IN Windows.
Windows Vista can be upgraded in place to 7 RC.
    You'll need NTFS (30-50GB).
Windows doesn't support FW for booting.
You can create a drive that has Master Boot Record.

  • Mac Pro doesn't boot from any media

    Hi,
We have a Dual Xeon Mac Pro that has been running fine since 2007 the person that uses it reported that it started making loud banging noises (how loud I do not know as thats quite subjective although it was loud enough to warrant other people in the office going to see what the noise was) and then the desktop crashed and now when it boots we get the folder with a flashing question mark.
I've put it down to disk failure but due to them having a Mac Pro (intel) and a Dual G5 PowerMac I think at some point in time they binned off one set of disks believing that one set would work for both machines resulting in none of the disks they have will boot the machine.
Oddly I haven't been able to boot it from any other media though, I downloaded the live version of Ubuntu for Netbooks to try to get it to boot from that but it wouldn't boot from that either and when I put it in selective startup mode it detects the CD in the drive as Windows.
So here I am with a Mac Pro an old G4 Mirror Doors era Apple Keyboard, no media that will boot the thing for diagnostics and wondering what my next move is. Back in the day when I admin'd a network of Mac's it'd be selective boot from a firewire drive try a repair do some cloning if required slap a new disk in reimage and off we go.
I haven't actively worked on a day to day basis on Apple kit for about 4 years though so I'm a bit rusty and have no experience with the Intel Architecture Macs other than my Mum and Dads iMac and MacBook and I'm pretty sure the media that came with them wont boot the Mac Pro, different media sets never used to work across ranges, not sure how true that is now though.
Any help with this much appreciated. Stats below
    Sean

I had a quote from the local Apple Service Centre and Media for this machine was £70.
Luckily we found the Media for the Mac Pro inside a box for some other software.
I have since been able to retrieve the data by inserting the disk into a SATA equipped G5 and using disk utility on that machine to repair the volume and disk.
I've retrieved the data and the disk, volume and permissions structures all check out.
However the Intel Mac Pro will not boot from the now repaired drive, or from the original DVD shipped with the computer.
So off to the Apple Service Centre it goes for hardware diagnosis. I expect this to be expensive
    Cheers

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.
GIF - Viewing GIFs Apple's Preview can do that.  Editing them, I like http://www.lemkesoft.com/ Graphicconverter.
DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/
    Otherwise see the resources on:

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

  • Reformatted disk but nothing appears in Mac OS X Installer

    Hello,
Please help. I am stuck in a situation where I have erased the disk on my iBook G3 but the Mac OS 10.2 Installer doesn't recognize any destination disk or volume on the iBook so I can't reinstall the Mac OS.
Background: I formerly had Mac OS 10.3.9 installed on my iBook, which worked fine for many months. I then began having repeated startup issues that neither Disk Utility, Norton Disk Doctor, nor Disk Warrior could fully fix. The startup screen either had flashing folder/question mark, or Apple logo with spinning gear wheel that never stopped, or circle with line through it. Sometimes I would get thrown into the Unix command line window.
After all suggested solutions failed I tried re-installing Panther from the update CDs but it wouldn't work because it couldn't find an earlier version of the Mac OS on the destination disk. I then tried an Archive and Install with the original Jaguar CDs that came with the iBook. This didn't work and I still had a startup screen showing an Apple logo with spinning gear wheel that never stops.
I then did a backup of all my important data by starting up in Classic (somehow that still worked) and copying the data over a wireless network to my desktop G3.
I then started up the iBook with the Jaguar CD and used the DU on the CD to erase the iBook hard drive and tried to install a new copy of Jaguar but when the Installer gets to the Select Destination Disk screen there are no disks to select from.
I have tried running DU numerous times to repair the Disk but it reports "Underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Deb,
Thank you very much for jumping in to help me. So far things have not gone well but I'm still trying.
To answer your question first, I don't (or didn't) have any partitions on the iBook. Before I erased the disk I was able to access Classic by starting up with the Mac 9.2.1 install disk and then selecting Mac 9.2.2 (Classic) from the startup contol panel. However, I am able to run the WipeInfo, Disk Warrior and DU from their respective bootable CDs.
I ran the cycle you suggested multiple times and found that WipeInfo didn't do anything, but eventually multiple reformatting with DU and multiple times with DW brought me to a clean disk that could be seen by the 10.2 Installer. The installer ran for over an hour and it seemed that everything was being installed from Disk 1 and then almost at the end of the progress bar the Installer quit with a message about not being able to finish the installation.
So I tried again but found the disk was once again not recognized by the Installer. so I did more erasing/reformating, running disk repair on DU, and trying to build a new directory with DW. At first I kept getting the message in DW "unexpected error while writing the replacement directory" and it would say I neded to try again. With DU I got messages about "invalid B-tree node size, catalog fiile entry not found for extent, keys out of order", etc etc..-- all different errors at different trys
Somehow by going back and forth between DU and DW I finally got a clean disk recognized by the Installer and tried again. This time the Installer completed the Installation and said Mac OS successfully installed. But then it automatically rebooted and booted up with the Disk 1 install screen again. I never had a prompt to insert Disk 2. When I ejected the Disk 1 install CD and tried to reboot the machine it went back to the flashing folder/question mark screen.
I was ready to give up but tried the cycle once again. At first the errors seemed really scary-- neither DU or DW could even read the disk - but after multiple reformatting, repair, and rebuilding I seem to have a disk that can be seen by the Installer on the Select Destination screen.
I haven't tried another Installation attempt because I wanted to first get your advice. Shouldn't the computer be giving me a prompt to insert Disk 2 of 3 at some point? What option should I choose for the installation? Should it be "install Mac OS X for the first time"? Do I need to partition the iBook with an 8 GB partition? The iBook was never partitioned before but maybe a re-installation requires a partition? don't know.
Is all this just a sign that my hard drive is totally toast? Funny thing is that I also ran the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the iBook and my machine passes all the hardware tests, including mass storage.
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • Hi, i wanted to resize my windows partion. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partion from the backup. Is this possible?

    hi,
i wanted to resize my windows partition. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partition from the backup. Is this possible?

I see youhave gotten recommendatons for using WinClone or CampTune.  I have used both and they both work well.
You have asked about using the WIndows 7 utility to backup your drive and restor it onto a larger partition.  I will tell you fro experience that this will probably not do what you want, and may do something that you don't want.  You can use the Windows 7 native backup tool to make a backup of your Windows 7 partition.  It will most liekly end-up making a dive image of the whole drive.  When yourestore that backup, it will try to re-create teh partitions of exactly the same size as they were when the backup was taken, so it won't increase your partition size for you.  Worse, since Windows doesn't natively know how to read./write HFS+ volumes, the backup will make a partition for your MacOS (replacing any you may have now), except that the copy restored by WIndows will be totally worthless, and you will not be able to boot MacOS from it, or even read it under MacOS.
Now I will tell you that I've also had some fairly good success working with the free tool CloneZilla.  Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, and everything else mentioned does cost you money, I thought I would throw it out.  CloneZilla is not as easy to use as the tools mentioned, but it has worked for me int hte past, so it is something to consider.  I tend to use CampTune myself, but that was because I purchased a bundle deal for them and it was included in that deal.
