Making a magic iMovie not magical. Having import problems

Everytime I start the import process of "making a magic iMovie", the import process will stop after inconsistent periods of time. Sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 30 minutes. I've only had one 60 min tape import completely without interruption. I've changed firewire ports, opened Garageband and played a few notes, run mac sweeper. Nothing seems to work. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I too am experiencing the same problem. I have never been able to import a complete 60 min tape.
Last time I tried I had roughly 20 minutes of footage with no gaps in the timecode and the import process stoppped after 4 minutes with a brief message "No Device Control". The camcorder kept on playing but the import process stopped and iMovie continued to makes titles and add transitions as if there were no more video.
Does anyone know what might corrupt or interrupt the firewire device control?
I'm using a Canon ZR40 camcorder. I have 3 firewire external hard drives daisy chained to one of the firewire ports. Footage is being captured to one of the external drives.
The other port is used to connect the camcorder.

  • IMovie NOT able to import Sanyo HD1010 files ?

I want to know about what types of files format are supported by iMovie 09
    Sanyo HD1010 Camcorder encoding format:
    MPEG-4
    1920x1080
    H.264, AAC
That was shown in Info dialog in Mac OS X.
But iMovie seems not able to import.
I choose File > Import > Movie, and I select all movies I want to import.
    Import Setting:
    Large - 960x540
    Copy files
    And it goes to
    Converting 1080i Movies
    Processing Event: Christmas
    ||||||||||||||||||||||-------------
Time remaining: less than a minute
    And it comes up nothing
It created a event at the bottom. But no movies was shown there.
iMovie not supporting that file format ?
What movie format it support ?
Is there any convertor that I can use ?

In Streamclip, drag your clips into the window. Then select File/Export To QuickTIme.
For Compression, select Apple Intermediate Codec.
For frame size, use the same as the frame size of your camera.
You may want to deinterlace the video, but you can try it interlaced and deinterlaced and see which one you like the best. You can test this with a short clip.
To test, import the AIC into iMovie, and then drag the clip into a project. Share the project in the format or formats you want to use (for example, h.264 for web, iPhone, or iTunes. Use Share to iDVD to make a DVD. Then see which one looks the best.
(In Streamclip, you can easily make a short clip by using I to set the in point and O to set the out point. This is nondestructive to the original clip that you dragged in.)

  • IMovie not Showing recently imported iPhoto videos

Hello. I am trying to view FLIP videos I recently imported into iPhoto within the iMovie app. I can see a few from 2008 and 2009 but not the entire collection. I believe the iphoto videos iMovie is showing me came from a Sony Hard Drive camera. Any ideas? Any thoughts? Thanks.

I decided to import all the original AVIs and they worked OK (except one folder the thumbnails were all black so had to regenerate thumbnails and is OK now).
So assume there must have been a problem with some of the .mp4 files, even though I ran the conversion of all AVIs the same time with same settings.

  • More Imovie help pls.  Importing problem

    Hi gang..
First thanks for all the help... I appreciate it.. I don't want to give up on imovie just yet.
Im on a mac pro, with 5gb, for a system so it should not be slow.
I have found after testing that the only way that I can get a final product to look good is if I start my project with a
1080i hd. Any other settings show lots of shimmering (I think this is what I have from learning
When I import 100 files, All jpegs converted to fit within 1024x1024 max and maintaining appropriate size for the type of photo it comes out nice.
but... it is so slow.. about 10 seconds to add a transition
WHY?? The system should have enough horsepower.
I think more importantly is that I can get a nice output with this process after it has gone to idvd and made the dvd and I look at it on the tv. Its acceptable.. so a WIN !!!
But at this pace its taken me over 4 hours just to add tranistions
So.. I'm thinking it must be my setup somewhere. I made a guest account, but its no different.
I have tried diff resolutions of photos down to 640x640. Importing from aperture or iphoto.. (no difference)
So why do I have to make an 1080i Movie to get nice quality on the tv?
P.S I have tried multiple tv's and dvd players.. no differnece
Scratching my head over this one.
Thanks all.. I feel like that train.. I know I can.. I know I can lol

    Hi g
May be I'm totally wrong but I would have been very surprised if it didn't
work exactly as You describe it.
    5Gb - way to little.
Mac OS X is really depending heavely on UNIX and virtua memory managment.
To work OK You need about 10 to (more likely) 20 % of the hard disk size free.
    eg. 80Gb hd = 8 - 16 Gb free to run OK
    eg. 160Gb = 16 - 32 Gb
iMovie needs to this 13 Gb free per hour of miniDV capture and about 2 to 5
    times more to work with.
16x9 and HD need may be 2 to 4 times more.
Video is a hard disk space demanding labour.
Adding external disks - You need to think of two things:
    - Mac OS Extended formatted - NOT UNIX or DOS
    - It is on Your internal drive You need at least 20 Gb free space. So you need
to free up this by moving other documents or projects out to the external one.

  • New to apple, not a techie. importing problems with canon hv20 - new imac

    hi team
i'm just starting out, and have honestly tried to look through the boards, but its just to much stuff to read.
i'm trying to import minidv tapes from canon, newer tape recorded on the canon imports ok on manual.
older tape recorded on an older canon around 2004-6, which plays in my new canon ok, apart from its not wide screen in the lcd, wont import.
what's the difference between my new wide screen tape, and my older recorded tape?
my imac is great, but the tutorials to get started with are smooth and basic, and assume you have no porblems.
    thanks in advance

thank you for your time team.
why isn't imovie clever enough to receive my older tape which i guess isn't digital? its hardly ancient technology or tape. if my hv20 plays it, why doesn't imovie just receive it?
to me its all just movie footage, i'm confused as to why it doesn't give me options or ask me question's about what i'm uploading...
does imovie only work with digital footage?
    cheers

  • IMovie 08 to 09 import problem - one big clip

I had a lot of projects in iMovie 08 and they have appeared ok in 09 but all seem to have been imported as just as one large clip instead individual clips. This means that re-editing is very difficult and defeats the object of importing iMovie 08 projects rather than completed videos. Does anyone know of a way to break the project back down into its original clips?

YOu are in "Project Library" view. If you pick a project and click on "Edit Project", you will see the individual clips you are used to.
The "Project Library" view is basically eye-candy so you can quickly find your projects.

  • Still having import problems.... Lost Cause???

After trying every possible solution (including upgrading 9.1 to 9.2 for Classic) that I can dream up or have read about, I am desperate for an answer. I have two potential Email programs that I could use in Tiger: "Mail" or "Entourage 2004". Either one suits me, but neither one will import my old email from Outlook no matter how I configure the import or where I put the actual "Messages" file. It's a huge file, at about 1000 MB. I've read that "Mail" won't import from Outlook at all, and I've read that Entourage should import this file.
What I get when I run the import function and click down to the Identities folder inside of the Microsoft User Data folder is grayed out files. It's not just the "Messages" file that's grayed out, it's actually all of them (Database; Signatures; Contacts etc.)
In fact, I just tried launching Outlook 5 in Classic to see if I could import there. Still no success, no matter which import format I select (as text or from application).
Also - over the course of yesterday, I copied the folder and it's contents more than once and placed each copy in a few different places so as to be able to try each location. Could multiple copies be the cause? If so - how do I know which to delete, and where should everything actually go?
There MUST be a solution. I've spent literally days trying to figure this out.

    Take a look at O2M.

  • After upgrading to LR 4.4 having import problems from 5DMKII

I'm unable to import raw image files from 5DMKII after upgrading to LR 4.4. Using an iMac OS 10.6.8. No error message, importing just stops after a few files have been imported. First it imported 2 files, then 9, then 11, before it stalls. No error message or pinwheel icon. I tried re-installing 4.4 twice with no change. My laptop, a Macbook Pro same system, running LR 4.3 can successfully import the same files using the same card reader and cable. Any ideas?
    Thanks

If you are using the option to automatically start LR to begin importing, turn that off, and try starting up the import from the memory card manually.
Next, try copying a batch of raw files to a temporary location on the internal HD and importing from the temporary location to the normal location using the Copy import method.
Next, try copying another batch of files to their ultimate destination using Finder and then use the Add import method.
This will help determine if it is a USB/Card-import issues or a 5D.2 raw issue that causes the lockup.

  • Magic iMovie from imported clips?

    Hi everyone -
Does anyone know if there is a way to have iMovie HD create a Magic iMovie from already-imported clips? It looks to me like it only works directly from the DV camera, but I'm hoping there might be a way to do this. Maybe with Automator?
    Thanks.

was just looking for a "one button" way to assemble a variety of
clips with a variety of transitions and music.
You might consider creating the snippets in a duplicate of your current iMovie project.
    • In iMovie, do a Save As of your project.
    • Open the new project. Shorten/discard clips to make your snippets. (Use direct trimming. Or probably faster, Split the clips and discard the unwanted splits from the Timeline.)
    • Burn a DVD of that project.
There are also many ways to "gather" snippets together into a single movie with QuickTime Pro, if you have that. You could duplicate the "Timeline.mov" that's in the Cache folder of the current project package, open the duplicate in QuickTime Player, delete the frames you don't want to keep, save it with dependencies -- or as a self-contained movie, if you wish -- and drag that movie into the iDVD window.

  • Magic Mouse NOT CONNECTING in Lion

My Magic Mouse has had a constant issue connecting to the MacBook Pro ever since upgrading to Lion.  It seems there is an obvious issue between Lion and Bluetooth.  I keep waiting for Apple to release an update for Lion, hoping they'll fix it.
Are you having this problem?  If so, please reply below and let's get noticed.
What I do to fix it:
All I end up having to do is go to the Bluetooth icon (on the top right of the screen), go to Apple Magic Mouse, Open Mouse Preferences, and just wait without need to click anthing else.  It takes a few seconds and then it'll connect.  But I have to do this everytime I wake my MacBook Pro from sleep.  It does fine connecting after a re-start or shut down but never from sleep.
    What about you?
    BUBBABAIRD

I have a similar problem in Lion but not Snow Leopard. At start up, sometimes both my Bluetooh (BT) Mouse and BT Keyboard connect just fine. Other times, one or the other does not connect at start up, but never both. With the keyboard, after the window comes up saying a keyboard is not connected, I turn the keyboard off then on and it will then connect. More times than that, it is the mouse that does not connect. I have a wired mouse that I use to connect it from the BT menu and everything is fine until I shut down and then restart (usually the next day). I don't think it is the PRAM because sometimes it works fine so it must be retained in the memory and I don't want to reset it if I don't have to and loose other settings. Same with resetting SMC, I prefer not to reset it. I have a second bootable hard drive with Snow Leaopard on it, and when I switch to that, it never has a problem. It seems to me to be a quirk in Lion. Just looking to see if others have this same type of problem.

  • Connected to Internet, but Network Magic is Not

Hi, I recently got a linksys wireless G router WRT54GS2 and it came with Netmagic. The first time I used it everything was working fine, but now (about 2 hours later) NM cannot connect to the internet, and none of the repairs fix it. It's strange because I can connect to the internet and I'm writing this message using the router. The version of NetMagic I have is 5.1.9055.0

PS. All my devices can connect to the internet including an Xbox 360 through a wired connection, an iPod touch through wireless, an Acer Aspire One netbook through wireless, and the desktop computer I am currently on with a wired connection to the router. The only problem I am having is that on this computer, Network Magic is saying I'm not connected to the internet, when obviously, I am.

  • Magic iMovie fails to recognize isight camera

For some reason whenever I try to make a movie using my isight on iMovie HD, it won't recognize my camera. Here is what I do:
    1) after opening iMovie HD, I go to file.
    2) select 'Make a Magic iMovie'
    3) click create
It displays a window saying that it is 'looking for DV camera' for a while and then informs me that it could not find anything. While it does this, it shows the live feed from the isight camera in the background. I suspect that I just need to tell it that I want to get the footage from the isight, but I don't know how. Someone help please?

    Hi juneyman:
    Welcome to discussions!
I don't believe that "Magic Movie" makes a movie for you live. Instead it takes pre-recorded content off a tape and makes it into a video.
So, if you want to make a movie with your iSight, first record all your video into iMovie.

  • IMovie 11 will not play any of the projects I have created over the past several months.  It will play iMovie events.  Anyone else having this problem?  Please help - Thanks

Movie 11 will not play any of the projects I have created over the past several months.  It will play iMovie events.  Anyone else having this problem?  Please help - Thanks

    Thanks for the suggestion...
I just got back from the Apple Store for the second visit with the Mac Genius to try to resolve the problem.
First visit we trashed the iMovie 11 application and reinstalled iMovie and ran a software update. Upon relaunching we were pleased that all projects and events ran perfectly from both the HD and the Drobo.
After lugging my 27" iMac back home and restarting it the same problem appeared.  I returned to the Apple store for a second visit. This time I left the iMac at the store overnight.  The apple service guys were able to duplicate the problem and wiped my hard drive.  There appears to be a bug with iMovie 11 (not confirmed) and an elevated report was submitted to Apple engineers.
I am leaving my "old" projects and events on the external drive unless I need to import them.  I am not going to restore from back up and will use a "clean" version of iMovie11.  No guarantees the problem won't come back.  This issue consumed a TON of my time.... hopefully Apple can fix iMove11.
