Making a map-style blowup section?

Hello!
I'm fairly new to Illustrator; I've been playing with it for a few days and I'm getting the hang of it, but I can't seem to figure one particular thing out.  I'm working on a vector map and I'd like to be able to take a section of it and blow it up to the corner in typical map manner.  I was able to accomplish what I was trying to do in Photoshop: http://i.imgur.com/qWz0A71.png but 1. it's pretty obvious where the non-vectored parts are, and 2. I'd like to keep the workflow for these as simple as possible (i.e. in a single program).  I got part of the way there with the Crop pathfinder tool, but it only includes shapes and not paths in the cropped selection (so no roads or rivers). How would I be able to solve this? Thanks for your help!

Probably the simplest way would be to make a copy on a new layer of the part of the map that you want to enlarge.
Then use a clipping mask to define the visible area.

  • INDESIGN GLITCH: Creating an XML file from Indesign Layout - Issue "Using more than one line of GREP" & "Map Styles to Tags"

I currently create XML from InDesign CC by Mapping Style to Tags.
    - The Paragraph Styles are manually apply to text. These styles include multiple lines of GREP to automatically apply character styles.
    - I map some of the paragraph and character styles to prebuilt tags that have the same name "Map Styles to Tags".
I have found through trouble-shooting that InDesign is unable to "Map Styles to Tags" for more than one line of GREP. I therefore have to chose which line of GREP to automatically tag and which lines to manually tag.
Please can anyone help, I need to automatically map tags to at least two character styles in one paragraph via GREP.
    Thanks,

OK. The best I can suggest is running a Find/Change like this:
Which will actually apply the character style to the italics (and I would do the bold as well just to make certain). Then run the Map Styles to Tags again, using the Apply by Name. Which will tag the italics.
I don't know why ID can map to the bold and not the italic character style. It either should do them both (as in this instance) or none at all as the character styles are not actually applied by the grep, just the styling from the character styles.

  • Making a map in Illustrator CS4

I have been reading some tutorials how to make street maps in Illustrator, and found that CS4 have a new cool tool called "Blob brush". That's very good when making a map.
My problem is more that when using the pen tool as before it is much more easy to correct and adjust the lines after making a freehand trace from another map as the anchor is in the middle.
I would need some tips how to use the "Direct selection" tool or some other way to easy adjust the traced lines? Maybe there is no way, but I have to ask

All the Blob Brush does is use a standard Calligraphy brush, then expand the brush when you lift the mouse/cursor. Thus creating a shape rather than a path with a brush applied to it.
I'd suggest you try just using a Calligraphy brush with the Brush tool. This will give you a path with a brush applied. Altering the path will be much easier than altering the shape of the Blob Brush. You can then use Object > Expand to convert the brush paths to shapes and the results are the same as the Blob Brush.

  • Problem mapping styles to tags

How do I prevent creation of the "Story" tag during mapping of styles to tags?
I need to achieve the following using a script:
I have two XMElements in the structure view, say Title and Body as follows:
    <Root>
      <Title/>
      <Body/>
    </Root>
Also, I have two text frames in a document. The first text frame has text with parastyle named "titlestyle".
And the second text frame has text with parastyle named "bodystyle".
What I need is when I do mapping of styles to tags (mapStylesToXMLTags) then the text with "titlestyle" should be placed as contents of title tag and the text with "bodystyle" should be placed as contents in body tag.
The problem is that when I map styles to text a Story tag is created for each text frame and the original Title and Body tags remain as it is, i.e, empty.
    I get:
    <Title></Title>
    <Body></Body>
    <Story><Title>here are the contents</Title></Story>
    <Story><Body>here are the conents</Body></Story>
NOTE: If you select the text in text frame and then click the tag in structure view, then the contents are placed correctly. This is what I need as follows:
    <Title>here are the contents</Title>
    <Body>here are the contents</Body>

  • Map styles to tags v. Map tags to styles

    Hi everyone,
Indesign CS4 has an option in the tags panel to:
    1) Map styles to tags
    and
    2) Map tags to styles
Does anyone know what the difference between these two options are?
    Appreciate any help.

Tags and Styles serve two separate functions.
A Tag defines data that belongs to a specific element and is enclosed with an opening and closing tag.
example:  <element>  This copy will be used for a headline  </element>
A Style defines how that data will appear with specific attributes: font, font size, color, etc.
So, say I have an Indesign document that has a predefined paragraph style named: Headline (with attributes of Times New Roman Bold, 18 Point) and I import a file that is tagged like my example. I can map the tag "element" to the style "Headline" and the import can automate the process like this:
This copy will be used for a headline

  • Error messages when using Mapping Styles to tags

We are using the XML Export from Indesign as part of our translation workflow. This has been fine until today. I am trying to tag an older document and when I use the Mapping Styles to Tags option I get the following error message:
"Cannot tag the selected text because the text contains part of a hyperlink or cross reference. Change the text selection to include the entire hyperlink or cross-reference"
I have no text selected, and I have tried tagging each Cross-Reference in the document and then repeating the map styles to tags all with no result. I don't really understand the message. Can anybody help me?
    I'm using InDesign CS6 Verison 8.0.1 on a MacBook Pro OSx 10.6.8
    Thanks
    Steve M

Do you still have the original version of ID in which the file was made? If so, try the export to interchange from that. It frequently works better than after conversionin a new version. Open the exported file in CS6 and try your mapping again.
If that still doesn't work, we'll need someone else to step in who has some XML experience.

  • Map Styles to XML Tags

    Hi,
My InDesign cc2014 freezes when I apply manually  'mapStylestoXMLTags' to a document. any idea?
    Thank you,

    +1 for Harb's reply.
As for an answer, as much as it is, if indesign freezes when manually mapping styles to tags (or the other way around), there is not much you can do. In my experience that always happens if the indesign document is large. Most you can do is post a bug report with Adobe and hope for the best.
As a workaround, you can iterate through the textStyleRanges, test each one and create the xml structure, but it's not a easy solution.

  • Map Styles to Tags Problem

For the first time ever I am having problems running the Map Styles to Tags commmand in InDesign CS3. The program takes some time to d the command but then an empty dialog pops up and the tagging has not happened. Any ideas in taking the text step to debug this problem?
InCopy CS3 on a PowerMac DualG5/Mac OS X 10.5.8. Extra plug-ins include the K4 workflow system, Universal Type Server plug-in, Notes Manager, Overset Manager. I have attempted to do this operation via InCopy on this article and encountered the same problem.

I finally figured out this problem. The main article (InCopy document) was very, very long. Once I removed all change tracking in InCopy and turned off change tracking (which involved some changes in K4 administration) everything worked perfectly.

  • Mapping Styles from Word 2010 to RoboHelp HTML 10

    Hello all,
I have created customized styles for myself and my team to use for authoring content, which I then import to RoboHelp, as I am the only individual who understands RoboHelp and HTML/CSS. I created a corresponding CSS style sheet in RoboHelp to correspond with the names of the Word styles. When I go to import the files in RoboHelp, I am running in to an issue with paragraph tags and heading tags.
When I import a file from a Word document, I have not found a way to map a <p> tag that is parsed from a Word document to an <h> tag, as heading tags do not appear as a selectable item in the Conversion Settings  window when importing Word files. I would be able to keep the formatting if I left the headings as <p> tags; however, it is my understanding that RoboHelp 10 search relies heavily on the heading tags for weighting search results. I have about 400 topics, and search is used heavily by those using my documentation. I would prefer to keep the <h> tags in place in the RoboHelp files and retain the search functionality, if at all possible, while finding an easier import option from Word files.
At this point, I have to manually change the HTML for each <p> tag to match the correct heading style. While Find and Replace works well for this, I would prefer to have a seamless import from Word (which bloats an HTML file horrendously, I know) by mapping from one style to the next. Has anyone found a way to map a <p> tag to an <h> tag so that the search functionality does not suffer? Or am I just approaching this the wrong way?

You are correct in your assumption that I am referring to paragraph styles when speaking of <p> tags. The paragraph styles come over as <p> tags, and I was just thinking of my style sheet. Sorry for the confusion.
Speaking of my workflow, I'm attempting to map the styles for one topic at a time when importing a new Word file. I set up a test project to test out my style sheet, as I am upgrading from RoboHelp 7 right now. .I need to get one document to map correctly to save the settings for future imports.
From the Import window, I click the Edit... button in the Word Document section. After RoboHelp scans the Word file, a list of all the styles from the Word document display. When I attempt to select from the available styles I want to map to from my RoboHelp style sheet, I don't have the option to select the heading styles I created in my RoboHelp CSS file. Does this provide you enough information to give you context on how I am attempting to map the styles?
I found this article that leads me to belive that RoboHelp does not support mapping to a customized heading style from a CSS file. I realize that this is around the printed output, but it states the following:
If custom heading styles aren’t named in the format Heading <number>, they are not treated as headings.
If it doesn't work going from HTML to printed output, I'm guessing that there is not support going from Word to HTML. Am I wrong in this assumption? Do I just need to alter my style sheet to only use the standard <h> tags to fix this issue?

  • Mapping styles issue

    Hi All
My name is Caryn Drovie.  I am a technical writer and i have used Robohelp HTML in the past but new to 9.0
I am having some issues I cannot resolve that I will try to explain but I  think if someone can use a program like "Show my PC" and look at my PC it will be quicker and easier to troubleshoot.  The project I am working on was a former writers and I am trying to modify and work with his c.s.s and styles and templates.  Here are my initial questions first:
    CSS
    1.  I first began to edit the default c.s.s and add styles - was that wrong?  Should I take those out?  I had changed to his new c.s.s he had created.
    2.  Should the styles I create and use map the styles in the c.s.s and in the write area in the c.s.s properties page.
    3.  What do I do with the styles in c.s.s I am currently not using but may use in future?
    Styles
    1.  I have lots of styles the previous writer created.  I have not used them all but I might in future, do I delete the styles not used?
    2.  I notice that when I am trying to map a style my style drop down info does not always match my style pod info and shows in gray shaded in drop down?
    3.  The client I am working from wants me to do the following, can it be done because it is not working for me?  They want me to create process steps. no table, and use 3 styles in a row.  First style is numbering, second is result paragraph and 3rd is screen shot.  But when I modified existing styles and apply the styles all detail moves and does not align properly.  I have tried to apply none style to clear styles and reapply but no matter what I do it does not work.  I do not want to type numbers directly or play with the indents.  My goal is following example lined up and spaced out nicely:
        1.  This is the first step
Result:   this is the result alwhere all lines are aligned
              Screen shot aligned
    Can you please help me?
    thanks

1] It is not wrong to edit the default.css but I do prefer not to. It is  perhaps better regarded as a clean css to base new css files on or  something to use as a yardstick when another css is giving you grief. If you are no longer using that css, perhaps best to leave it for now until these issues are resolved. You can always get a clean default.css from a new project.
2] I am not sure what you mean here.
3] Leave them or comment them out. /* just before the definition and */ at the end of it.

2] Map a style where? A screenshot would help. Use the camera icon to insert.
3] You could set up a multi level list as described on my site where levels two and three have no bullet or numbering. Alternatively at the end of line one, press Shift Enter and the next line will align to the text, not quite what you want as there will be no indent but maybe that is acceptable.

  • RH 11 CSS Mapping Styles issue with Word 2013

    Hello members,
Any help will be much appreciated.
Platform: Win 7, RH 11, Word 2013 however, using an existing Word Template that was created in Word 2007.
    HISTORY:
Six months ago, an upgrade of RH8 to RH11 took place (smooth, no issues reported). Please note, I have no "easy" way to verify if there was a problem in RH8 (all projects are upgraded, and old builds are backed up on IT server).
There are existing Styles created in RH and in the Word Template (e.g., Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, Normal, normal_bold, etc.). These existing Styles have no mapping issues hence, RH CSS recognizes their corresponding Word Styles.
    ISSUE:
RH11 CSS does not recognize New RH Styles and Word Styles.
NOTE: Styles are the same type. “For example, character to character, paragraph to paragraph, table to table, and multi-level list to multi-level list” (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/robohelp/robohtml/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d11aff59c2a0-7ee4.ht ml#WS21E2B5E4-C4AC-47b2-9D4B-D548EA9E3C04).
    Things Tried:
Converted (SaveAs) my template .dot (Word 2007) to ".dotm" (Word 2013) = No change in issue mentioned above.
What do I see when I create new Styles in RH CSS and Word Template: I am able to map Table and Multi Level List.
Purpose: Working on a documentation standard project. Creating New Styles ‘based on’ existing styles. For example:
    RH CSS
    ListBullet
    Style: Paragraph
    Formatting: Font =10pt
    Indents: Left = 36pt
    Spacing: Before = 0px
    Paragraph: Alignment = Left
    Indentation: Left = 18pt, Right = 0pt, Special = Hanging (By 18pt)
    Spacing: Before = 6pt, After = 0pt, Line Spacing = Single
    Advanced:
    Word Template (.dot)
    ListBullet
    Style: Paragraph
Style Properties: Name = ListBullet, Style type = Paragraph, Style based on = Normal, Style for following paragraph = ListBullet
Formatting: Font = Arial Font style = Regular, Size = 9pt, Font color = Automatic (black), Underline style = none
Paragraph/Indents & Spacing: Alignment = Left, Outline level = Body Text
    Indentation: Left = 0.25", Right = 0", Special = Hanging (By: 0.25")
Spacing: Before = 0pt, After = 6pt, Line Spacing = Single, Selected (Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style)
    Paragraph/Line & Page Breaks: Pagination = Window/Orphan control, Tight wrap = None
Bullet Format: Font = Symbol, Font style = Regular, Size = 9, Font color = no color
Problem I am having is as follows:
RH Wizard section - Print Document Appearance
Project’s CSS Styles (Used Only or All)
    ListBullet
    Microsoft Word Styles (all)
Unassigned – Use style in project) drop-down list
The Style “ListBullet” does NOT show in the list
NOTE: This anomaly I just reported happens for ANY new ‘Paragraph Style’ I create. If I create a List/MultiList, and the names of the Style are the same in RH and Word, RH Wizard automatically maps them. However, reading on multiple forums, authors have reported problems with Indentations (i.e., Word over extends the indentations); I have see this as well.
PS - Happy Holidays to you and your families. My Best, ~PM
PSS - Hi Peter ... I reviewed your site and this site, and Googled as well before posting.

Thank you Peter and Amebr for your assistance. I ended up using RH Multilevel List Style, configured, and created an identical List Style in Word. I created a Single and a Multilevel (e.g., Level = bullet, Level 2 = squares); their challenge is matching RH indents with Word Indents... It's sort of a bear since RH does not have the Format Paragraph option (ref. drop-down) like Word Lists -  Numbering functionality.
After generating my print document mu Bullet style reads "Normal (Web)"; even though the RH CSS Wizard recognized Word List Style I created (Ref. Font: Symbol, Font color: Black, Indent: Left: 0.15", Hanging: 0.25", Outline numbered + Level: 1 +, Numbering Style: Bullet + Aligned at: 0.15" + Indent at:  0.4", Priority: 100, Based on: No List.
Question: Would anyone out there know why is when I highlight my bullet list to verify the correct Style (with the Styles pane open) and I see the "Normal (Web)" [its Style type = Paragraph and Style based on = Normal) is selected? If it came through (from Rh) as a true Multilevel List Style, I should not see anything.
    Happy Holidays!

  • Issue with style templates & sectioned reports in BI Publisher

    Hello everyone,
while building a report in BIP 11.1.1.6 I've encountered the next problem. I'm using a style template with defined header & footer, and the layout rtf template supposed to contain several sections (e.g., for 'No Data Found' message). The problem is that whenever I add sections to the report, the header & footer are applied only to the last one — no matter how many sections are there.
I've looked through the xdo debugging logs and I still see no reason for the <region-header> & <region-footer> not to apply to all of the sections.
Can anyone help me with this issue?

    Hi Kishore,
I have a similiar request. We do not have LDAP enabled yet. I configured & linked OBIEE with BIP. I put a BIP report in one of our Dashboard pages.
When logged in as Administrator / or the user who has admin rights, I could see the BIP report in dashboard but any other users can not view the report. Can you please share the doc you have with me and it might be useful.

  • Mapping style templates and properties to Actual Style Sheet Classes

I got this response to an email regarding creating a customized style sheet and thought others might find it useful following is my initial question and the response from David Phipps. If anyone else has input to this conversation please join in.
Initial question: I'm trying to create a highly customized style sheet and could use a matrix that maps the various properties to the styles that each property affects. I have had some success determining the specific styles that I would like to change but am unable to use the style mill with any efficacy to make those changes. We are attempting to create a single language style sheet with a unique color scheme that matches our branding. One big problem we have run into is that certain styles are called in multiple places with different backgrounds (i.e. breadcrumbText). Any help along these lines that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Response:The CSS style mapping is not terribly satisfying right now; many objects share common CSS styles, which means if you change one tiny thing the whole page changes. We don't have a matrix or spreadsheet or styleguide that lays out the page itself and defines the styles used in each point. However, the stylesheet mill should work for you, and it's possible that what you have going on is a problem with your mill or an incomplete copy of what it generates.
There are 18 styles in the portal currently; you can actually create new styles and populate them, which sounds like the option you are interested in. The mill is just an ANT script that uses the template files in the templates directory and combines them with the property files in the prop-color and prop-text directories.
The prop-text files are per language (10 languages); if you check you'll see the values are all the same right now; the idea is you could change the font names or sizes per-language if you wanted to.
The prop-color files are per style (18 styles). If you want a new set of property values for, say, style 19, you'd add a file called color.19.properties, and the mill would pick that up and generate 190 files (19 styles x 10 languages). It would then add a new line to community-themes.txt, which has a name of each style for each language, based on data it picked up from your new color.19.properties file.
The real secret is that you only add color style elements you want to override. If you want a specific set of styles to always be available, just add them directly to the appropriate template file (in your case, the portal50.template file) without using the @variable@ in place of actual values. Then you're just adding new style overrides that apply everywhere.
Finally, you can add arbitrary new properties to your new prtoperties file and use those in the template:
    in portal50.template:
    ..actionbarPortletBg {background-color: @personal.and.interesting.setting@;}
    in color.19.properties:
    personal.and.interesting.setting=#ff9900
So the CSS mill is just a glorified text replacement tool.
Remember that the CSS mill works this way:
    - Run make_all.bat if you're not sure and want to insure you've remilled everything, otherwise use make_community_css.bat or make_menu.bat to remill only community styles or those for the jsportalmenus dropdown, respectively.
    - The resulting files are created in ptimages/tools/cssmill/css
    - You have to copy the resulting files by hand to the imageserver CSS location, which is
    ptimages/imageserver/plumtree/common/public/css
    - You have to forcibly stop and restart your imageserver, be it Apache, Tomcat, IIS, Websphere or whatever; no matter what anyone says the new content won't show up reliably until you restart your imageserver.
You probably know all this and your real problem is the CSS is not specific enough, that is, you can't get individual items to change like you want. We have been working on this, and the new version of the portal will have much more addressable CSS styles, including the ability to specify styles for individual navigation elements, individual pages, and individual portlets. This basically meant rewriting the HTML we generate, of course.
Since you can override and rewrite chunks of our HTML as well using View Overrides, if you're in a jam we can walk you through how to rewrite specific bits of the UI that are causing you trouble - for instance, the code that generates the breadcrumbs itself.

One way to do this is to give the <body> tag an ID. In a template, you need to make the ID attribute of the <body> tag editable.
You would then have something like this in your style sheet:
    #home.oneColFixCtrHdr #container #navigation li,
    #services.oneColFixCtrHdr #container #navigation li,
    #about.oneColFixCtrHdr #container #navigation li,
    #contact.oneColFixCtrHdr #container #navigation li,
    #testimonials.oneColFixCtrHdr #container #navigation li,
    #links.oneColFixCtrHdr #container #navigation li
    background-color:
    #66ccFF;
    border-bottom-width: 1px;
    border-bottom-style:
    solid;
    border-bottom-color: #FFFFFF;

  • Making a map.

Hi I am highly interested in making maps in photoshop. I usually only used free software but I got Photoshop and I thought I could make some maps on here!
    I want something like this:
    http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/2241/gtavmap.jpg
    http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6507/123861607.4/0_91845_61797a26_orig
Notice in the second SS how the mountains and stuff have a nice effect.
So basically I need a tutorial or at least a heads-up as I am a bit of a noob.
    Thanks.
    (I have CS6 Extended)

First, the links worked directly for me, on Chrome.
Now, while one CAN do similar in Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator would be a better program. Besides the various shadings and gradients, one has the benefit of working in Vector, so that Scaling (both up and down), will not degrade the resultant image.
Also, like PS, AI allows one to use Layers, and for cartography, those will come in handy.
Note: if going from AI to PS, the AI Layers will not translate directly, so you will end up with a Flattened AI image, when you Place it into a PS Image.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • JS CS5 Word RTF mapping styles

    Hi,
From older postings I've learned there was no way to automatically (by script) map Word RTF styles to InDesign styles om import. Has this situation changed with CS5? I did find WordRTFImportPreference, but that only has an option to deal with clashing styles. I can't find a way to map the styles. Am I overlooking an option or is it still not possible?
And if not, is it possible to read the XML information from the preset file by script and use those mapping on an Word RTF file? I've read something like that in this posting http://forums.adobe.com/message/2354990#2354990, but I don't understand how styles from XML can be applied to imported Word RTF. Those are two different things, aren't they?
    Thanks,
    Dool

For javascript, it's called "WordRTFImportPreference" (and its helpful Help string tells me this is "Word RTF import preferences." ...).
    It's a property of the application: Application.wordRTFImportPreferences.
It should have been in there somewhere, but I can't find any reference to style mapping or presets -- so apparently, these cannot be scripted.
