Making a miserable PC stable at last

Hi
My system has always been a little temperamental. It will run ok for a few months, then start getting sluggish and eventually crash with Blue Screens requiring a reinstallation of Windows.  Anyway, I never did any stability/benchmark testing, or updated BIOS or drivers etc so I think it is about time.  I use Windows XP Professional 32-bit but have never installed SP1 or SP2.  I am now going to install Windows XP Professional 32-bit with SP2.  I just ran CPU-Z to get some information on my system configuration.  The results are shown below.  Can anyone spot anything that is wrong and likely to cause instability (e.g. stock frequency, RAM timings etc)?

BIOS
I am still using the BIOS that came with this MSI K8T800 FIS2R motherboard in early 2004.
I was planning to update to the latest BIOS, 7.1, but read somewhere that older cores have problems with certain new BIOS versions.  Can I use 7.1 and if not, what is the newest version you recommend I use?
VIA SATA RAID
Should I upgrade to the latest versions of VIA SATA RAID?  I am still using the one from 2004.
VIA HYPERION DRIVERS
I want to upgrade to the latest VIA Hyperion system drivers.  Should I choose Hyperion Pro or Hyperion 4-1?  I tried the 4-1 recently but it only contains 3 drivers so shouldn’t it be called 3-1?
USB 2.0
I have never got USB2.0 to work.  My USB2.0 ports just function as regular USB1.0 ports.  Any ideas?
QUICK NOTE ON PSU
I initially had a Nexus 350W PSU (+12v = 16a), as shown in my signature below.
http://www.nexustek.nl/nx3500_real_silent_power_supply.htm
Following advice on this forum I upgraded to an OCZ Powerstream 450W PSU (+12v = 30a).
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/power_management/ocz_powerstream_power_supply
I didn’t really notice a difference in stability and last week, the OCZ just popped. I switched on the power switch to start up, heard a loud bang and the computer refused to start.  I switched back to the Nexus and it worked fine so the OCZ is obviously broken.
Finally, will any of these recommendations change if I upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Thanks guys.
1.
Should I use the Hyperion 4-1 or Hyperion Pro driver?  I read that the Hyperion Pro includes a SATA RAID driver whilst the 4-1 does not.  Other than that I do not know of any differences between them.  I am installing the VIA SATA RAID driver from the floppy with F6 during Windows installation anyway, so could installing the one on the Hyperion Pro cause a conflict?
2.
Is this the correct order of installation?
Windows XP Professional SP2
VIA Hyperion 4-1 (or Pro?)
DirectX 9
NVIDIA Driver (for my NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 Graphics Card)
LCD Monitor Driver? [IS THIS NEEDED?]
M-Audio FireWire 410 External Soundcard Driver
3.
Should I install the display driver contained in the Hyperion driver package or just install my NVIDIA driver for my graphics card?  I want to avoid driver conflicts.
4.
How come the Hyperion "4-1" only contains 3 drivers?
Cheers.

  • Making R12 Installation more stable

    Hi DBAs,
I have installed new R12 (12.0.4) instance and also upgrade one instance from 11.5.10.2 to 12.0.4 on RHEL 4.6 (Single Node) with database 10.2.0.3. Now to make the environment more stable and up todate, can you please tell me what further patch work I need to perform.
Please advise me how to find about applying necessary patches after generic 12.0.4 installation.
    Thanks

  • Libx264, why is it making me miserable?

I've recently recieved footage (.mov) from someone that looks great in quicktime but starts giving me troubles when I try to do...basically anything to it.  Importing, transcoding, converting.  When I try importing the footage into Final Cut Pro X, it crashes 100% of the time.  What clips remain when I re-open the software are clips that have horizontal green bars that flash in and out.  The clips also seem to meld together for a couple short seconds, looking pixelated and confused because multiple (seperate clips keep in mind) bleed together in wonky ways.  The audio also clicks (peaking?) which doesn't happen to the original mov's.  The one thing that helped get rid of the green bars and clip crossover was going to the Project Properties after import and changing a couple of the settings.  Still after that I'm getting incredibly distracting pixelation every second or two.
    Check it:

    Format:  1080i HD      Resolution:  1920x1080      Rate:  29.97i
I need this footage for work, we are going to be using it for web based promos but more importantly for television broadcast purposes so getting this to work is crucial, especially since we've paid for it already.  The videographer doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about and isn't much help at all.
    Cheers!

Every app that uses x264 claims that it IS H.264, but it is *not*. It' can't be.
libx264 is the "generic" H.264. Every free application (MPEG Streamclip, VLC, etc. etc.)  that converts to or from "H.264" is using "x264" because:  H.264 is a proprietary codec that must be licensed for use (the decoder, at least, anyway [it's all provided for free for the end user though]). It's why YouTube, Mozilla and others had such a problem adopting it a few years back. Usually x264 is not a problem, the "work-alike" typically works very well. However, *libx264" is a Unix library of code and as such has an extensive collection of command line arguments (which can be custom coded in apps like VLC and FFMPeg/FFMpegX, etc)
    http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/X264_Settings  if you're interested.
There used to be a cool little application called Visual Hub [http://www.isquint.org/] that did a wonderful job of transcoding video. And every time you hit the Customize button, it would put up an alert: "Don't Do It! You'll only mess it up!" Which, I found to be very good advice. However, some people just cannot refrain from tweaking things. I'm not saying your source *did* overtweak, but there could also be "build issues" if he's on a PC, or other operating system.
My best advice would be that you may need to download and install the x264 codec (for quicktime) if (uncommon) custom settings were used. [It will not interfere with the real H.264 codec.]  This was the best *recent* source I could find:
    http://www003.upp.so-net.ne.jp/mycometg3/
Since the original frame rate is 60i (59.94i), you can set your project for 1920x1080/30p (29.97p). Check to make sure that the Field Dominance is set to Upper First (or check with the original videographer and make sure HE set the field dominance correctly! Whatever he used - match it in FCPX). There really is no reason to ever use interlacing anymore. It's been proven there is no longer any benefit to interlacing with modern television systems and interlacing can even ADD overhead to the signal.

  • Duplicate last names when both names in first name field. Keeps repeating.

When I send e-mails/ reply/ forward to people in my addressbook who have both names in the first name field, the name after the space repeats itself in the last name field. Example: John Doe becomes John Doe Doe after an e-mail.
Mail is altering this. I've experimented enough to realise that it has nothing to do with syncs or any other program.
I've seen people have solved this by corretly placing first name and last name in their correct fields. This is NOT an option for me due to the way my Treo works which does not give me the option to organize names by first name. This besides the fact that I have over 500 entries in this manner.
Irrelevant of this detail, Mail should not be altering address book information this way. There are cases in my country where a person has two first names separated by a space, if I know them in an informal manner I have no interest in having their last name or having AB repeat their second first anme then making me search my treo by last name.
I'm going to keep bumping this topic until I find some sort of solution or am given one.

Just ended up taking the time to correct first and last names in their correct fields... screws the view up on my palm, but at least the problem is solved.

  • Stable Neo2

I am having problems getting a stable system.  I have tried setting my ram timing to auto and various settings.  Prime 95 fails on all the settings i have tried.  Is ther a suggest setting to start from then work up , in order to maintain a stable system?

hi, at the moment im having problems with mine keeping it stable, cant run prime 95 either at auto or setting the timings manually, but at the moment ive set the speed to 166mhz in bios instead of auto or 200mhz and prime 95 is still running in the background stable for last 15 mins whereas before it stopped at a minute, worth a try to see if you get the same result, please let me know as im having a lot of problems aswell.

  • Linux is not ready for the desktop - Mandriva devs

I just read this in the latest DistroWatch Weekly:
You wouldn't expect something like this to happen at any time, let alone on the eve of Mandriva Linux 2007 release. Last week, two Mandriva developers went on record saying that "Linux is not ready for the desktop". In a web log post entitled Why I'll never use Linux for my main desktop, Vincent Danen concluded: "This kind of thing is precisely why, for me, Linux belongs on the server. Now if those kernel-developing idiots would get their act together and give us a 2.6 kernel that was a) stable and b) supported for more than a week, then I'd really be pleased." Another Mandriva developer, Fabrice Facorat, agreed. In a post called Linux ready for Desktop? Of course not!, he had this to say: "For me when you have control over the environment and the hardware, Linux is ready: think servers, workstations, thin clients, kiosks. However when you have no control on the hardware, Linux is not ready because it somewhat lacks flexibility."
There you have it, right from the horse's mouth! From two guys who have been working for a Linux company, developing a popular desktop Linux distribution, for years! Yes, that's right, Mandriva Linux is not ready for your desktop! Don't waste your money buying it!
One really has to wonder about the future of a company which happily asks Gaël Duval to leave, yet is quite pleased to keep developers who publicly hint that they consider Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox and other kernel developers "idiots"! A perfect pre-release PR, non?
No comments... I just cannot find any words.    :?

ughhhh. Mandrake have always sucked at marketing, they do themselves no favours. IMHO, they're becoming more and more irrelevant with each release. Once upon a time I might have reccomended mandrake to a newbie, but certainly not now. They've got great assets and a good base. The *potential* to become a good distro. But each release, stupid bugs make it through, and the improvements seem negligable.
Once of their better features is their huge repository of packages -- which is horrendously poorly advertised. You'll find nowhere in the GUI's or desktop a place to access their 'contrib' repo which is the equivalent of our extra, and contains a huge amount of packages. Also an important point for mandriva has been mandrakeusers.org/mandrivausers.org, which has been a huge community offering great support for newbies to mandrake, rather than directing them into the expensive mess that is known as the mandriva club. Mandriva have totally ignored this resource, and have made no attempt to support this board, upon which you'll find, I have quite a reasonable post count from back in my early days of Linux (mandriva 8.2 was first distro), and continuing on to now. It also exemplifies their (lack of) decent customer support.
The distro has had countless irritating bugs which pervaded through releases, and all sorts of utterly stupid ones that should never have made it through the testing process. They do little to help themselves with this. I've reported countless bugs, and all of them have been ignored for months. On their last release, they included the old rt2500 module, which at the time, hard locked SMP machines, and made my mandriva unbootable as it was loaded on boot. I filed a bug, marked it as high priority and it was utterly ignored for more than 6 months, so much so I had forgotten about it. Other bugs and emails have suffered a similar fate.
It's GUI tools, have become a complete mess, for example wireless, in 2006 release, was absolutely horrendous to configure, and had no support for WPA -- wpa_supplicant wasnt even on the CD's so people could configure it manually.
It's good to see they're finally ditching their old desktop theme, which they dragged on for far too long. It's always been absolutely hideous.
Their business model emphasises the 'club' far too much, making it difficult to even find a download on their site for the standard version, which has "Free" tacked all over it, as if to try and make you feel like a cheapskate. Doesnt help how they change their release cycle frequently either.
The stupidity of Mandriva just confounds me. PR like this does nothing to help them. They criticise the developers for not providing a 2.6 kernel that is stable. Maybe mandriva should look in their own backyard, and offer a distro that's remotely stable. Last time I used it, it had a horrendously old udev, hotplug, and a very slow hardware detection system. It still used bootsplash, which has been unmaintained for over two years, and included supermount, which Con Kolivas has disowned and again, has abandoned for years. They're hardly doing themselves favours patching their kernels with this out of date crap. Nor do they update them, I dont see mandriva offering updates to newer ones, which would no doubt fix many of the reported issues.
Alternatively they could do what other distros do and pitch in and help. Many of the kernel developers are also employees of other vendors, or have an important part in other distros, such as Daniel Drake and Robert Love. It'd be great for mandrake if they employed a kernel developer, because it's clear THEY are the ones who are the idiots.
I have no idea how they made it out of their bankrupcy, with the lacklustre state of their miserable distro, I think their days are numbered, unless they do something to change around their image and fix their product.
    ok, im done.
    James

  • Changes in mail not saving in Yosemite

When I upgraded my macbook air to Yosemite overtime I log into my mail I get a message the message "mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk."
When I check the box in preferences it works for a while but if I exit mail and come back I get the same message - why is this preference not being saved?

Same here.  I'm having nothing but problems with Apple Mail via Yosemite right now and this very situation that we're both experiencing is making me miserable at the moment.  There more I start changing settings the more I'm likely going to have a mess. I'm still experiencing the issue of emails that reach my Go Daddy Imap webmail...being downloaded until quite awhile later via the new Apple Mail client.  In other words....nothing's different the last several months of having to constantly quite the application.
Email is so critical for everyone...I was praying that email would sync and be improved in this new version.

  • Finally installed Leo on G5 Dualcore with suc6

ok, after a miserable upgrade from 10.4.10 to Leo 5.1 I had various application problems Itunes, Aperture, firefox, safari they all crashed intermittently (every time you started it after several minutes etc.etc.) did a clean install of Leo (but selected save files or something (top one in the selection screen) same result application crashing all over the place. New try. clean install with format & replace data on disks with zero's. this solved the issues. after that I reinstalled all other software, so far so good. system & software has been stable for last 2 hours now Yipee !

ok, 2 days running with the latest installation. it's a huge improvement from a stability standpoint. so far so good I did have severe issues with by second HD though. Several directory's were locked into read only, and when I tried to change the rights, tha finder crashed. took off data, formatted the drive reloaded the data, and no more problems !

  • Dual Angles - How do I create highest quality output?

    Hey all,
Football coach doing his best to use FCP to edit football videos for this season.  I've made some progress, currently I'm at a place where I've twisted things up a little bit and want to be able to get to the optimal output settings for my setup.  I have a MacBook teachers laptop, and 2 video cameras, a Sony HDR-CX110 and a Sanyo VPC-WH1 (with an Xacti card), which gives MPEG4 output.  I'm looking for optimal settings for the Sony camera, it was working well at first with Log and Transfer, but I've changed the settings more than once and can't remember what the best setting would be, I guess using the Easy Setup options?  The Sanyo I guess needs to be converted by MPEG Streamclip, using ProRes 422 setting, which I have some familiarity with since I use it for DVDs.  As we are in-season now, I don't have the time/energy to research all this stuff thoroughly enough, and the tech guy at school has been minimally helpful.  I'm not coming in totally blind, I have done research the last couple months, but I'm looking for someone to help me cut through the nonsense and get a routine I can get familiar with.  What I'm doing is taking video from each camera (2 different angles during the game) and intercutting the 2 angles.  What settings should I use to import this footage, and what do I need to be doing to produce output that plays well on Quicktime?  I've been able to get an intercut output through trial and error, but the output is sloppy, and this is making life miserable when I have 50 teenagers in a meeting room and I'm trying to rewind and fast forward plays quickly and sharply.
Even though I'm sure I come across as not having more than a rudimentary understanding of FCP, I can assure you, I know less than you think.   I don't have a good understanding of output settings, EasySetup options, or input as far as what HDV is as opposed to Apple Intermediate Codec, etc.  I just know the steps I've been told to take, but I don't UNDERSTAND it.  I apologize for the rambling, I could use some help.  Thanks all for your time,
          Grouch

Thanks Jim.  I checked out those tutorials, I'm still swimming a little bit though.  Does it make sense to go the multicam sequence route in my circumstances?  Right now, the typical work flow for a football game is for each camera operator to start and stop recording after each play to create individual files for each play.  For multicam it seems that it would need to have each camera running continuously instead?  Not sure battery life would enable that, but perhaps it would.  As these are 2 different brands of cameras, and they will be located 75 yards or so apart with different filmers, it's not realistic to have perfect sync.  I don't understand timecode that well, will the cameras be able to be synced within FCP if they are both running from start to finish without any pauses?  I.e. just find a sync point near the beginning and go from there?  We don't use audio for the shoots, does this make that more difficult/impossible?
Separate question, can I still use log and transfer for the Sony cam, or do I need to do something differently (such as using MPeg streamclip instead of log and transfer?) in order to have both cameras imported using ProRes 422?  If I use MPeg Streamclip, I don't believe I have the ability to log clips in log and transfer or log and capture, do I have that right?  Thanks again for your time,
         Grouch

  • My iPod doesn't sync all my music! HELP! :(

Hello there! I happen to be having a couple of troubles with my iPod classic lately. The last one and the most miserable one is that last night when I added three new albums on my iTunes Library and then synced my iPod to copy them on it, I noticed that all my music has been reduced from 54gb to 19 gb!! I was and still am in schock because I dunno what happened! I've done like I usually do and got no error during the syncing process. I still have 54gb of music on my pc and iTunes even now, but my iPod won't sync for more than 2 minutes so it can't copy all the music on it.
I gotta mention that my iTunes is up to date, I've got a new perfectly working computer and my iPod is also pretty new (bought it earlier this year).
PLEASE HELP ME FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS!!
P.S I'm going on a long enough road trip next week so my iPod breaking down right now is a complete nightmare
    THANKS!

My Suggestions, when syncing an iPod Classic on a Windows machine.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
    Disconnect all other USB Devices
Connect your iPod to the PC, using a high speed USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC. (if you are using a Desktop PC)
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem. (if you have more than a few GB of Others)
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
    Sync your iPod.
    Good Luck!

  • Can't log in with LXDM

    Another Arch newbie here!
Basically I have issues with logging in with my LXDM display manager. I installed Arch toward the end of October and I'm still trying to shape it to my liking.
What's supposed to happen : I can start my LXDE or Openbox session after selecting my username and typing my password.
What actually happens : everytime I type my password and press Enter, the screen goes blue for a second and reverts back to the login screen. The same happens if I try to log in as root.
Before running into this issue I was trying to configure keyboard shortcuts so that I can adjust the volume with fn/XF86 keys. I also performed an update at some point too.
    The last files I created or modified were /etc/X11/Xsession ; openbox/rc.xml ; etc/rc.conf and ~/.bashrc
I can log in with both user and root account if I press ctrl + alt + F2 and the startx command works. I'm not using xinitrc.
I tried to get some informations on the arch wiki and other website but didn't find a solution so far. I also wouln't like to make it worse by performing wrong manipulation which is why I'm posting about my issue here.
    Thanks in advance!

Well, only /home/user/.bashrc had something written on it. The others are empty. Just deleted them and nothing changed, it seems.
    # ~/.bashrc
    # If not running interactively, don't do anything
    [[ $- != *i* ]] && return
    alias ls='ls --color=auto'
    PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
Maybe I should try to update Arch? or perhaps replace LXDM with something else and more stable?

  • External hard drive won't install, Please Help

I just purchased this same external hard drive, 3/7/2011.  I hooked everything up via my USB, put in the installation CD, got the Drive Set-up window, clicked on Backup Software and got a message "C:\DOCUMEN~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\pft48F~tmp\" and "Access denied" with the only choice of clicking on "OK"; when I clicked on OK, a small window titled "unpacking backup software" appears in the upper left corner; it got about halfway through, stopped and I got an alert from my McAfee security program that it detected a trojan and removed it. Then 3 gauges appear in the upper left corner and the message "Toshiba Backup Software Installation an error occurred during the move data process of the file REFILERW.SYS!" appears and I click OK again then the Toshiba Drive Setup window appears and a green checkmark is NOT next to Backup Software. However, if I go ahead and click on the other 2 items to install, Drive Monitor Software and Power Save Software, a green checkmark appears next to them. When I then click Exit I get my regular startup screen. The Drive Monitor appears in My Programs but nothing else.  Did Toshiba send me a trojan on their program?
When I checked out my McAfee to see what the name of the trojan was,it says: Artemis!8CBE6FC5C432
I'm not a technophobe and am just lost; I don't know what to do or where to get answers. I emailed Toshiba Tech Support twice but didn't get anything back.
Please, can someone out there help me?

It would be a false positive.  Some antivirus programs look for virus like activity, and that makes them much more prone to errors.
Get rid of McAfee's and switch to Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free and very good.   Security essentials is a very light program, so you will not notice any slow downs when it is running like the bloatware security programs are known for and you will have far fewer false positives.

When I used to manage a PC repair shop, we used to have people come in and pay us to get rid of McAfee's and Nortons on their systems because they would slow the computers down so much, and the false positives were making them miserable when trying to install programs that they knew were safe.

Well, the pithy answer would be to buy a computer from a vendor who supports free operating systems.
Of course, I own and love my DV4.
What does it mean?  Some BIOS implementations use areas of low memory without properly allocating it (letting the operating system know it is in use).  Windows just does not use that area of memory, and some vendors do a sloppy job in their software quality; it only has to work with Redmond code, so why fix it?
Linux is forced to implement a bunch of ridiculous hacks to work around low quality hardware and firmware.  You found one.  The kernel was watching that memory to see if it could be trusted.  Something changed that memory when nothing (in the kernel's view) should have touched it.  Since it changed, the kernel has taken note that that memory should not be trusted.  Kind of analogous to finding a bad block on a disk drive and subsequently ignoring it by adding it to a list of bad blocks.
So, aside from sucking it up because you lost some usable memory, you need do nothing.
EDIT: BTW, it probably means the new kernel is more stable.
