Making a new folder on desktop

When I try to make a new folder on the desktop, the new folder zooms to a different place than where I wanted to create it. Why would it do this?
I just want to right click, and choose new folder, and i want that new folder to appear near the area where I originally right clicked. More than 50% of the time, the folder moves over to the far right of the screen. I don't understand why it would do this. How do I fix this?

I am not quit understand what you mean, but I am guessing that when you created a new folder, the folder automatically goes to right side of the screen.
In that case, did you happen to sort your desktop by name, kind, or etc. If so, you can cancel it by right click the mouse and select "sort by" and click "none"

  • Cannot create a new folder on desktop.

Hello. When I am trying to create a new folder on desktop (right click->new->new folder) it gives me error message (i dont have english version of windows 8.1 so I had to translate it):
    Item wasnt found.
Item is no longer placed in <%3 NULL:OpText>. Check the location of item and try again the action.
    Can somebody help me?

    Hi,
As Ed mentioned before, are you able to create folder in other places?
It is usually caused by incorrect delection of some registry entries, maybe accidently by yourself or by some registry cleaner\anti-virus software\bad-coded programs you installed recently.
So quick fix is that you can restore the PC to a previous state with restore point if you have. (please note that you will lose some recent settings)
You can also run sfc/scannow to check and fix if there're some missing system files.
Or try the registry fix mentioned in the following link (Please first backup your registry, any incorrect changes on registry will cause serious damage)

  • New Folder On Desktop

    Need some help with this:
I want an Automator plug-in workflow that creates a new empty folder on my desktop titled with the current days date. So the new empty folder would be labeled 10-7-08
When I was running Tiger I created an Automator plug-in that that did what I'm trying to do in Leopards version of Automator, and when I upgraded to Leopard last year the Automator plug-in I created in Tiger continued to work great until today when it said the workflow couldn't be found. So I thought, no big deal, I'll just create a new Automator workflow plug-in. I was right it was no big deal, very easy to do:
In Automators Library I simply select *New Folder* and in the name space I dropped the variable *Today's Date* and under the Where dropdown I select Desktop. That's it, that's all I need. So I click the Run button, the workflow runs and in less than a second I have a new empty folder on my Desktop named with today's date. So I go to File > *Save As Plug-in > Save Plug-in for Finder* and name the plug-in workflow *New Dated Folder*.
Here's where I need help, when right click or control click to access the the new workflow (usually on my desktop) *More > Automator > New Dated Folder* The workflow runs, it creates the folder with today's date, but instead of stopping the workflow continues to run and starts coping my Desktop folder inside the new new folder, and inside the copy of my desktop it does the same thing and inside that, the same thing, and it just continues to copy folders inside folders.
I try to stop the workflow but clicking the stop sign button in the menu bar doesn't work so I have to force quit *Automator Runner*.
Please advise, this workflow worked great in Tiger. How do I get it to NOT copy my Desktop folder? I'm not telling it to copy anything. It works perfectly directly from Automator just not as a Finder Plug-in
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Wow, that's the answer I was looking for, thank you!
I had noticed that it was carrying my right click on the Desktop thru, but I couldn't figure out how to tell it not to do that. I looked all over in Automator I even tried right clicking in the workflow window to see if any contextual menus popped up. I had no idea it was hidden in the upper bar of the Action and in my frustration I didn't see the Action menu
Thanks again you saved me from completely pulling out my hair.

  • IPhoto 2011. Created an album from different cameras (different filenames), placed pics in order in album but want to export into new folder on desktop in same order. Can I number the pics within iPhoto to reflect that order, or simply export in order?

iPhoto 2011. I have created an album from different cameras (different filenames), and placed pics in order in the iphoto album but want to export into a new folder on the desktop in that same order. Can I number the pics within iPhoto to reflect that order, or simply export in order?
    Thanks!

File -> Export, and note the options under File Name
    Another way:
Here's one (of several) way(s) to do what you want:
Make an Album of the photos, then drag the pics into your preferred order.
Then Photos Menu: Batch Change -> Set Title to Text "John's Birthday", for instance, and tick the box to append a number to each Photo. Now your photos are titled 'John's Birthday 001, John's Birthday 002 ... etc'
Then File -> Export and in the Export dialogue set the Filename to "Use Title"
Sort on Filename in the FInder and you end up with a folder full of images in the same order as the Album in iPhoto.

  • New Folder on Desktop - Open It and It Shows Everything on Desktop

All of a sudden, if I create a new folder on my desktop, and click it, I do not get an empty folder, but rather I get my desktop and anything on it - like I'm looking at the desktop from the sidebar except its the folder content - which includes the new untitled folder as part of the content. It's like some sort of script is running in the background. I deleted my finder .plist but that did nothing.
Thoughts on how to just create a folder on the desktop and have it be empty when I first open it?
    Message was edited by: pcbjr

Think I solved it - put cursor on desktop, held down control, created a new folder and all was right. Then went to Finder, File, New Folder and the new folder was just a plain old empty folder!

    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\
You say you want to change the key ‘New’, somehow I suspect that ‘New’ is a reserved word and would not be used as a key name, perhaps it should be New Folder.
However, if you want to add an entry named New, it can be done by right-clicking ContextMenuHandlers and choosing Key (if it is to have sub entries) or any of the other types, e.g. String Value (you have to know this otherwise it probably won't work). If
it doesn’t work, it can be deleted by right-clicking it and choosing delete.
You cannot mess up anything by adding an entry, but it is advisable to backup the registry or create a system restore point before making any changes.

  • Making a new folder

How can I tell my script to make a new folder at the same level as another folder?
    for example:
    I have myFolder which is
    "Photo [Work]:Users:peter:Documents:image files BU:renumbered files:62199L:RE-labeled JPEGs:"
and I want to tell the script to make a new folder at
    "Photo [Work]:Users:peter:Documents:image files BU:renumbered files:62199L:"
How do I do this if my script only knows where myFolder is?
    Pedro Paramo

    Hi pedroparamo
by using MYFolder as the path, like below, "make new folder at MYFolder"
    property Folder_name : {"NEW FOLDER"}
    set MYFolder to "Macintosh HD:Users:kevinparrott:Desktop:test:"
    tell application "Finder"
    make new folder at MYFolder with properties {name:Folder_name}
    end tell

  • Trackpad mouse moving on its own and creating new folder on desktop

This stared a few weeksd ago, I've lost control of my macbook pro as my mouse has a mind of its own.
The laptop barely(or even not at all) responds to my control.  It's like there was somebody else controlling my mouse, my keyboard works fine however.  The guy hacking me looked at my mailbox, dropped a few things from the dock, made a new folder on the desktop and opened my photos.  I've tried everything including  turning off wi-if, my reuter and under "system preferences" unclicked "sharing" of anything. I also took it to the genius bar to have my laptop wiped and updated to OS X Mountain Lion.
Last week, my mouse again started to move on its own and created a new folder on my destop.
I don't know if anyone has the same experience...and if so, please let me know what is going on and is there a solution?
    Thank you

Woah, I just got this really sketchy email a few hours later. It's a bounce back from an invalid address, but it includes the previous few messages too... these guys are definitely speaking in some sort of code.
I pasted it on this google doc for your inspection, pretty crazy. Do you think it could be related to this cursor moving incident? Did I get remotely hacked or something?

  • CRASH when making a new folder in save for web

When going into Save For Web, and saving a picture, and clicking the little "new folder" button, Photoshop crashes and closes instantly. This is 100% reproducible.
Can we expect this to be fixed?
    Details:
    Windows 7 x64, fully updated
    Photoshop CS5 x64, fully updated
    Memory is plentiful
    Disk space is plentiful

Always nice to get an upgrade, but it's a rather costly operation, one might say
I still think this is an issue Adobe should be fixing. This problem (for me at least) did only occur in the save dialog while in Save For Web, and not in any other save dialogs, such as the regular file->save as. This made it very hard for me to believe the problem is in my system. Although something might be triggering it, that something could hardly be the cause, since, like I said, the problem only occurs in SFW and only ever in Photoshop, and only in CS5. EVERY other program works fine in this regard.
So please, Adobe, fix this bug before forcing folks to initiate an expensive upgrade...

  • When making a new folder in the "Page Bookmarked" pop-up, it doesn't let me name the folder.

Usually, when you bookmark a page, when choosing the drop-down menu next to the "folder" area, you can press "New Folder", and it create a new folder and let you name it.
Now, it often does nothing when I press the button, and when it does make a new folder, it doesn't let me name it. I have to go to my bookmarks, right click it and go to properties, and then change the name from there. It's very annoying.

  • In Finder, when making a new folder, it always goes "loose" in the window

If I'm looking at a finder window with, say 10 folders in it - okay...I click on one folder and hit "new folder" and it throws a "untitled" folder, usually at the bottom of the list (u is near the end of the alphabet, duh).
Then I have to go find this untitled folder, rename it, and physically move it into the location.
    Isn't there a better way?
If I am in a folder, and want to add another one in the same spot, is there any way? Seems like wasted time and steps for this basic function....
    anyone know how?

It all depends on the sort of view the containing folder has. In List or Column view the new folder will come to life in alphabetical order in the "untitled" position (assuming you have List view set for name) of the folder you have open--so if you want a new folder in a sub-folder, you'll have open that sub-folder. When you create a new folder the window should jump so that your new untitled folder is visible and selected. Icon view can be somewhat more problematic. If you have the View Options for that particular folder set to Keep Arranged by Name then the new folder will appear in the right place, it will be selected, and if necessary the Finder will move the window so it is visible. But if you have a custom "by hand" arrangement of folders and files inside an icon view folder and simply create a new folder using the keyboard shortcut the results are variable. I usually control click the spot where I want the new folder to be and select New Folder from the contextual menu. It appears at the spot I've clicked.
BTW, if you want to add a new folder to a sub-folder of a window in List view, but don't want to lose your "place" you can open the sub-folder by holding down the Command key, double click it, and it will open as a new window. Add your folder then close it. You can also just double click it, add the folder, then click the back button in the toolbar to return. You can customize the toolbar from the View menu.

  • Doesn't propogate permissions when making a new folder on Exchange server

I'm an instructor at small private collage. We have a big Windows Exchange server managed by an IT guy. Mostly PCs are on the network, with about a dozen Macs. When Mac users access the server in a shared directory and make a new folder in that directory, permissions for the new folder are not propogated to other users on the network. New folders have to be made on a PC.
    What gives?
