Making a PDF reflow to 2 or 3 different sizes...

I'm hoping that someone can help or at least shed some light on a question about PDFs inside of inDesign...  Here's my scenario:  I have an inDesign document that is used for printing booklets to teach people about a CAM software.  The original document size is approx. 5.25" x 7.5" which also looks great on a Desktop and tablet.  Is there any way (by the grace of God) to have inDesign automatically size the document to fit a smaller, phone size display - let's just say 3.75" (diagonal) display?  In other words, can I create a secondary smaller document from the original, where the content would essentially remain in the same order but get pushed onto more pages?  I am not looking to create an ePub file.  I tried going that route, but it's more involved than I have time for now and this booklet is pretty well-stylized.

There is a reflowable form of PDF but the limit is your target platform. There is no "default PDF Viewer" for the iPad -- Apple's own, inside iBooks, is as limited (or more) as their poorly desktop Preview implementation. There are lots of other PDF viewers, all with their own unique set of own limitations -- even Adobe's first tentative version doesn't do very good on the 'Pad. Smaller mobile devices even have *less* brain capacity, and I don't think you can expect anything better on short notice.
On top of that, InDesign does not allow for designing a "reflowable" document. There is a pretty good demo movie of a proof-of-concept technique, but that's all it is -- a *possible* line of development for a future ID. I can't tell at this time but I'd be quite surprised if this made it into CS6 already.
Still -- even if InDesign can reflow layout, text and images and all, for you, you would still be looking at producing a dedicated document per current screen reader size. If you want to target lots of different devices, you might want to even look slightly *lower* than an ePub: a plain HTML document *with* images can be viewed at about every phone, at any size the user finds convenient.

  • Making a PDF with "Outline" and Bookmarks Using Pages

    Hi, I'm using Pages 1 and I have tried making a PDF with outline breaks but I failed. I thought using paragraph styles for my document would work but when I exported my document to PDF, all I got was a PDF that only has the thumbnails view but not the outline view. Also, when I exported my document that has bookmarks to PDF, all the bookmarks don't work anymore. How can I make a PDF document using Pages with all the bookmarks and the organization just like other PDFs that I encounter? Thanks

    Hello LadyinStilettos,
    welcome to the Pages Discussions. If I remember correct, in Pages 1.x there is no way to export text links to PDF. An outline view creation doesn't exist.
    If you want to have links in PDF (of the TOC, too), then you should upgrade to iWork'06. But outline view doesn't exist here like it doesn't in version 1.x.

  • Making a PDF - something's missing

    I have Acrobat 8.0 Standard. I got a different computer this
    week and for the time being I am on Word 2003. Previously, I was on
    Word 2007. Well, now when I PDF a Word doc, I no longer get the
    form that has the radio buttons that give you the option to save a
    Word doc as fully functional PDF or as a quick and simple PDF. It
    goes right into making the PDF ... which is taking very long and
    going through tagging (which I don't need).
    Does anyone know how I can access those fully
    fiunctional/quick and simple options again? Might this have
    anything to do with Word 2003/Word 2007? Thanks very much. I really
    appreciate the help.

    Try saving the file to your local computer (to the desktop, for example), and then open Adobe Reader itself and open the file in it directly (via File - Open). See if that works for you...

  • Indesign book files making a PDF with spreads????

    Hi, I am working with a book file but need to make a digital PDF with spreads. So the problem is obviously that I start with a right single page and finish with a left single page in each chapter which doesn't make a spread. Is there a way around this? (apart from copy and pasting the single pages at each beginning and ending together as spreads into an empty document and replacing these pages in the PDF)
    Thanks

    Re: Indesign book files making a PDF with spreads????
    When you make the pdf of the book from the book panel.
    Create a new document call it filenamespreads or something.
    Get the PDFplacer.jsx script http://indesignsecrets.com/placing-all-the-pages-of-a-pdf-inside-indesign.php
    Run a few pages to get the position right, then do the whole book.
    Export to pdf as spreads.
    It sounds longwinded but it isn't.
    @Eugene--
    This is the closest answer to solving my problem.
    To clarify, the reason I need spreads is NOT for final printing. Its for sending a reader proof to a client to send to someone for review. They need to see it as spreads to get a "feel" for the book. I feel like it should be possible to do this, easily, without too much stress in InDesign.
    I am going to try your solution but I am a newbie about using scripts in InDesign. Never done it before. I placed the script in the scripts folder and re-launched InDesign, but how do I launch the script?
    Thanks!
    Oh, and I should have specified before, I'm using CS2.

  • I am having autocad not respond when I am making a pdf using autocad 2002 and adobe acrobat XI

    I am having autocad not respond when I am making a pdf using autocad 2002 and adobe acrobat XI
    We have adobe acrobat 8 on another system that seems to work fine,  what elsedo we need to do to get this trial version to work properly.
    We are able to get everything set up , sized, etc,  but when the actual process starts it is stating  "autocad not responding and it  just spins and never makes the actual final pdf.
    Any help on this would be appreciated

    It's probably a compatibility problem with the updated PDF libraries vs. you hopelessly old ACAD that can't be resolved. In any case, I'd consider it one of those things of trying to attack the problem on the wrong end. All major CAD programs have native PDF export these days and even ACAD has had since v2006 at least...

  • Acrobat vs Livecyle - which is better for making accessible PDF's

    I am having a very hard time making my PDF accessible. The source program I use to create my document is InDesign 5.5. I convert to PDF and am attempting to tag it using Acrobat X. I tried tagging my form using the articles panel in InDesign but it doesnt convert to PDF properly (which i learned at this forum is a system glitch). Someone at work suggesting using LiveCycle but I am not familiar with LiveCycle at all. I thougt it was an add-on extension to Acrobat so I'm confused why someone would tell me to use LiveCycle instead of Acrobat X. Can someone please clarify for me what the diff is between Acrobat and Livecyle. I need to make my document accessible by the end of the week and having a lot of problems doing it but i want to make sure that Acrobat is the best adobe product to use before going any further.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

    Hi miss forms,
    I'm out of the country just now and "on-line" time is occasional. However, here are some observations for your consideration.
    All this may sound daunting. It is not (honest). Think of it as becoming a competent cook.
    Some study. Some practice then it is Rachael Ray time.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Here's a short take:
    Use InD CS 5.5 to master the underlying "form text".
    Master content with accessible PDF in mind.
    Example - if any "headings" are to be used then use InD built-in paragraph tags.
    Output the tagged PDF.
    Walk the structure tree. Perform requisite post-processing activities.
    Goal is to acquire that well-formed tagged PDF.
    Next, build the form fields.
    Properly fold these into the structure tree.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Observations:
    "... but i want to make sure that Acrobat is the best adobe product to use before going any further."
    Currently and for the foreseeable future - if  you must provide accessible PDF as a deliverable you must have Acrobat Pro.
    You want the most current version and you want to keep it updated.
    Currently there is no such thing as an accessible PDF that does not require post-processing by a knowledgeable "warm-body".
    As the 'warm-body' you perform the essential V&V prior to release of the deliverable.
    While there are tools to help with they still do not replace the 'warm-body'.
    "I need to make my document accessible by the end of the week ..."
    This could be problematic. Unless you are all ready well versed in what a well-formed tagged PDF is and how to stage it in the authoring file I suspect that you won't have a proper deliverable by 30 November.
    Using InD CS 5.5 is 'good' but it is not (as you've discovered) adequately robust for well-formed tagged PDF output compared to the current release.
    The output PDF needs manual remediation (only possible with Acrobat Pro).
    As to any current authoring application used -
    Whatever is used it needs to provide robust "tag management".
    Currently the first string consists of:
    Adobe FrameMaker,
    Adobe InDesign,
    (n.b., Adobe has invested significant resources in improving mastering content for accessible PDF and output of tagged PDF InDesign versions released since CS5.5. So, if InD is your requisite authoring application I'd recommend you move into the current release.)
    MS Word 2010.
    When using MS Word 2010 one can use the MS Save As PDF - XPS configured to provide accessible PDF or use
    PDFMaker.
    For Word 2010 you'd need at least Acrobat X in order to have a compatible PDFMaker.
    Some other applications are also providing for authoring / tagged PDF output (such as Open Office).
    Regardless of the authoring application used Acrobat Pro is still need for requisite post-processing (structure tree V&V, cleanup, etc).
    What form "type" to use?
    I'd recommend Acrobat forms rather than XFA forms.
    Accessible XFA forms are possible.
    But, As George said - a non-trivial learning curve for the basics. Then comes the learning / practice to develop the accessible XFA form.
    If you go with XFA I suggest obtaining the XFA spec that Adobe provides.
    Considering the improvements Adobe has made in Acrobat XI for Acrobat forms I'd recommend you use that.
    However, if you have an older version you can still get there from here (using Acrobat Pro).
    "Tools" considerations:
    Common Look PDF - An enterprise level tool.
    A plug-in for Acrobat.
    Common Look Office Pro
    (Pro supports PDF forms (Acrobat forms - not XFA forms)
    An add-in / plug-in for MS Office 2007/2010.
    Used with Power Point or Word.
    Provides check points on mastered content. You resolve identified issues then use it to output a tagged PDF.
    Perfom requisite post-processing with Acrobat Pro.

  • Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?

    Is it possible to have the crop marks where you want when making a PDF?
    So if I have an Indesign document 84x55 with a 3mm bleed but I want a PDF from that document to crop at 85x55 (adding .5mm to the left and right of the PDF), the crop marks are offset by 3mm but I want the left and right crop to be .5mm out into the bleed and not at the document edge.
    Resizing the Indesign file is ruled out for the moment.
    Thanks, Tim

    The automatic crop marks will always indicate the trim size of the document as defined in Document Setup, so the simple answer is no. You will need to draw custom crop marks in the slug area. You can set the slug area my clicking More Options in Document Setup.
    This is a highly unusual request. The purpose of crop marks is to indicate the one and only trim area for the page. Why do you want crop marks that don’t match the document size?

  • Do I really need to name the file when making a PDF?

    When I use Export for making a PDF, the name of my open InDesign file is not automatically offered as the name of the PDF.
    Does anyone know if I change this? My filenames are long and very precise, and any typo would be bad.
    Thanks.

    That's what I thought I would do when I noticed the PDF creation was not using the InDesign file name, but I can't because since I am making a PDF, only PDFs are shown in my source folder. All other file types are filtered out.
    I've never seen this behavior before - I gotta be missing some PDF creation setting somewhere, but I can't find one.
    I'm suppose I will have to copy a filename to Notepad and paste it in the export window. (Doesn't that seem a little lame though?)

    How do I prevent Adobe from taking my jpegs and making them pdf files? I have had to uninstall Adobe to access my photos as jpegs.

    I would suggest you change your file associations so that jpgs open in a program other than Acrobat.  Assuming you have a Windows machine, just go to the Start, and search for "file associations" ... it's part of the Control Panel.
    Scroll down to the file type jpg, and set it to open with whatever graphic preview or editing program you have that you want to use as the default.  From that point on, when you click on a jpg, it should not open Acrobat and instantly try to convert it to a pdf.

    I publish a 41mb InDesign newsletter monthly into interactive pdf. It always becomes a file size of 4mb, 10% of original, when I save to pdf. This month my newsletter is 41mb and it drops to 11mb, 25% of original. I have re-sized all pictures, deleted pages separately, have gotten the file size down to 16mb and it drops to 7mb, 45% of original.
    I have gone back and saved Feb and March and it saves to 10% of original, as it did before, and I use the same mechanism to save now.
    I have gone to Acrobat Pro and optimized down to 8.8mb, but the quality is not acceptable.
    What other variable is there that I haven't discovered?

    My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Portfolio pdf- why is text in different sizes on each page of pdf?

    Even though i have saved my images with text (always  font size 12) as the same size (eg. 10in x 10in at 100ppi),  each time i save the images as a pdf the pdf then has all different size text from image to image-  a complete mess as a portfolio.
    Also when i then changed the size of the image and saved it as a copy, both images and text stay the same size!  though both the ppi and scale differ in each images....
    How do i change this? any tips appreciated!

    You can't write directly in PDF from Output Module, only add a header or
    footer text but that will repeat itself each page.
    You could try so in an app like Word or if you have Pages or other design
    application it would be possible to make your own layout and text and from
    there save as PDF.
    You can also try in PS, just create a template frame (new file) big enough
    to paste the images in and with space around including more at the bottom
    where you add the text you want. On the frame put a text layer and the file
    layer for the image by either drag and drop or copy paste. Resize the image
    till it fits in the frame
    You cans resize the image on the template layer to fit in the frame as you
    like and save as new files.
    Now you have same sized frame with same ppi and font size.
    With this files selected in Bridge in the order you want choose Output
    Module with option for paper size, landscape or portrait, background color.
    Choose 1 column and 1 row including auto space, deselect filename and
    extension and also deselect header and footer if thy are not so already
    (unless you want some text and page numbers)
    I created the images in photoshop and then  i use the bridge adobe output
    module- the pdf is a multiple page document with one image per page which
    has text written beneath the image -
    as in  the image is saved with a frame with title/text.
    Is there a way of writing individual text directly onto each pdf page
    instead of the image? perhaps this will solve the issue of differing text
    sizes....?

  • Acrobat 8.0 Merging pdfs to one pdf, first pdf of different size

    I have about 60 jpegs that I would like to convert to single pdf file.
    When I try to make one pdf from these files, a binder is made without any errors but when I open this binder, the first pdf is of original size and all rest are of 25% size of the original. I tried converting each jpeg to pdf individually and then merging into one, results in same story.
    Can anyone see whats going on here? I am using default settings at every point.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Are you sure it really is 25% of the original size?  It's possible the image is of different sizes, and while in a binder, they will show them in relation to the other pages, not of their actual size.
