Making a public hotspot

Hey, I'd like to leave an Airport Extreme (N) at work and allow clients to use it as a wifi hotspot... Is there a way that I can block access to local LAN resources (like shared files and folders) through the Airport.
Thanks!

Starting pages for linksys wrt54g/gs:
http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/LinksysWrt54g
http://www.wrt54g.net/
On this last one you'll find the method of finding your wrt version. I've got one wrt54gs currently and I used openwrt and sveasoft hacked firmwares before. Now I'm using it only for my notebook so I changed firmware back to original linksys (only the latest version for my model). Openwrt is very nice and KISS (ipkg). But if you don't want to spend too much time for maintenance I'd suggest using one of the hotspot specialized firmwares. You'll find some reviews and comparisions on the above websites. If you want to tweak the router more (vpn, ipsec etc.) go with openwrt. Be carefull with loading new firmware - large sized will not work with tftp. Uploading firmware via web interface is a good idea. If you can, connect it to some UPS for firmware uploading time (unless you like to risk :-)). An alternative is to use some linux box and hostap. You can do just about anything with this but it will take a lot more work, more power consuption and maintenance in the future.

On windows XP or linux have a MAC adress Change function  allow 00 mac adress and another normal mac adress range. On windows 8.1 all Mac changer program dont work. This 2,6,A,E on second adress are not vaild Mac adress. You simply can not use normal MAC
addresses on windows 8.1.When i connect the usb the Pc windows 8.1 recognizes the adapter but the default  driver and the downloaded ralink driver the same problem. On windows xp the current driver works perfectly have (Local Mac Network Adress) funktion

The 3. problem im tested in virtualbox the windows 7 and 8.1 on 8.1 (on the blue wifi platform) not show correctly the signal strengh. On windows 7 show this correctly. The windows 7-8.1 Configure/advanced the advanced options on Ralink 3070 the default (windows

Today it is very common these wi-fi technology increasingly used (hotels,Public Hots Spots,Internet coffe,) growing free bublic wifi projects. The wifi funktions on windows  need debugging and modernize. The quality of Wi-Fi is now the operating system

    Hi,
For changing the MAC address for Windows 7 is designed with some limitation, we cannot get over it. Thanks for your understanding.
Under Windows 7, the possible range of spoofed addresses for wireless adapters that can be set is limited.  To be used by Windows 7, a spoofed MAC address should have 0 as a least significant bit (unicast) and 1 as a second least significant
bit (locally administered) in the second nibble.  Thus possible values for the second nibble are limited to 2, 6, A and E.
    In other words
    MAC address:  “XY-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX” “X” can be anything hexadecimal.  The hexadecimal “Y”, written in binary format, is  Y:  “kmnp”,  where “p” is the least significant bit;
    p=0 --> unicast;
    p=1 --> multicast;
    n=0 --> globally assigned MAC;
    n=1 --> locally administered;
    So, actually MAC can be changed  to any combination in which p=0 and n=1;
    “Y” can be 2, 6, A or E.
So the possible MAC addresses in Windows 7 for wireless adapters:
    X2-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
    X6-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
    XA-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
    XE-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX

  • WiFi Sense Not Very Sensible - Preferring Public Hotspots over Preferred Networks

When I am out and about WiFi Sense is really good as it automatically connects to public hotspots and I only need to open a browser and press ok, etc.
However when at home I have BT and have set up my own WPA network connection but the router also has BT WiFi on it and even though I am connected to my home WPA connection and it is a "preferred network" and set to be connected to automatically
why does the phone keep disconnecting at regular intevals reverting back to the BT WiFi connection?
When the phone switches to BT WiFi the internet is blocked until you sign into a web portal so as a result the phone uses up all my data connection as it reverts to 3G/4G and also the push email stops working.
So is there no way that WiFi Sense could be more "sensible" and connect to my preferred network in preference to the public hotspot then only connect to the public hotspot if no preferred networks are available?
I have friends who have Windows Phones and BT internet and have the same issue as well.
    Thanks

You are welcome. I'm glad you got it back up.
    (1) You say you did the symbolic link. I will assume this is set correctly; it's very important that it is.
    (2) I don't know what you mean by "Been feeding the [email protected] for several weeks now, 700 emails each day at least." After the initial training period, SpamAssassin doesn't learn from mail it has already processed correctly. At this point, you only need to teach SpamAssassin when it is wrong. [email protected] should only be getting spam that is being passed as clean. Likewise, [email protected] should only be getting legitimate mail that is being flagged as junk. You are redirecting mail to both [email protected] and [email protected] ... right? SpamAssassin needs both.
    (3) Next, as I said before, you need to implement those "Frontline spam defense for Mac OS X Server." Once you have that done and issue "postfix reload" you can look at your SMTP log in Server Admin and watch as Postfix blocks one piece of junk mail after another. It's kind of cool.
    (4) Add some SARE rules:
Visit http://www.rulesemporium.com/rules.htm and download the following rules:
    70sareadult.cf
    70saregenlsubj0.cf
    70sareheader0.cf
    70sarehtml0.cf
    70sareobfu0.cf
    70sareoem.cf
    70sarespoof.cf
    70sarestocks.cf
    70sareunsub.cf
    72sare_redirectpost
Visit http://www.rulesemporium.com/other-rules.htm and download the following rules:
    backhair.cf
    bogus-virus-warnings.cf
    chickenpox.cf
    weeds.cf
    Copy these rules to /etc/mail/spamassassin/
Then stop and restart mail services.
There are other things you can do, and you'll find differing opinions about such things. In general, I think implementing the "Frontline spam defense for Mac OS X Server" and adding the SARE rules will help a lot. Good luck!

  • Blank WiFi login screen at various public hotspots

Whenever I'm at a public hotspot that requires a login (like, say, a Panera Bread), my iPhone detects the network, then pops up a Login screen. The problem is, that screen remains blank -- I never get as far as being able to actually log in.
I've tried resetting my network settings, resetting my phone, etc. -- no soap.
A possible clue: The *one* time it seemed to work was when there was no available cellular connection. Then the Wi-Fi login screen actually appeared. But when the cellular connection was recovered, I again found myself unable to connect to that Wi-Fi network.
    Help!
    TIA...

OK, I believe I may have solved this
When you can't log into public WiFi ...
    with an iDevice running iOS7…
because the Server times out ...
or the login/registration page just won't load ...
      ********Simply do this***********
Go into settings> WiFi and tap the little info icon for the network you are trying to join
If you see two slider buttons, these are the cause of your woes
One says "Auto Join" (or similar) - you can leave this ON
The second button is "Auto Login" - you must turn this OFF (slide it left so it is grey not green)
Now go back and reselect the network.
If the login page doesn't come up automatically, open a Safari window and enter any address
    Bingo!
I have reproduced this issue and solution in 100% of the public WiFi spots which I could previously not access. Please not that I also have "Block Pop-Ups" turned OFF in Settings> Safari, though I do not know if this is a necessary step.
I have filed a bug report with Apple. Feel free to contact them yourselves if this workaround works for you.
Also, please mark this as "Solved" if it works for you so that others will know how to connect to public WiFi.
    Peace y'all

  • Public hotspot connect: is there a shortcut?

This often happens when I open my MacBook in a place with a public hotspot: a Wi-Fi network connection is established, but the login window from the hotspot's provider doesn't appear.
To solve this, I usually open  Network Preferences, then choose Assist me, then Diagnostics.
In this panel, the control lights for Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Settings and Network Settings are green, but the lights for ISP, Internet and Server are red.
I then have to hit Continue a couple of times to confirm the default choices in the ""Choose network port configuration" and "Select Wi-Fi network" panel.
This usually forces the hotspot provider's login window to appear.
Rather tedious. Does anyone know of a terminal command or a system preset to speed up this proces?

    Hi rkranendonk!
I have an article here that may be able to provide some helpful information for you:
AirPort and AirPort Extreme: Using Public Networks, or "Hot Spots" to Access the Internet
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21385
The relevant information for this can be found here:
Joining a network provider's hot spot
To join a network provider's hot spot, you need to set up an account with that provider. The provider typically offers a way for you to sign up immediately, at the hot spot itself. The provider may add variations to this theme, but it goes something like this:
Choose the provider's network from the AirPort menu, just as you would choose your own AirPort Base Station.
Open a Web browser, such as Safari.
The provider automatically pushes a page to your browser, or you enter the address specified in writing at the hot spot.
The page offers you a form where existing account holders may log in, and it includes a link for new customers to set up an account.
If your experience differs, follow the instructions that you find at the hot spot.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • Connecting to public hotspots

    Hello,
I have an iPad 3 and have severe difficulties connecting to any public hotspot.
I am able to connect to my home wifi and work wifi but not out and about.
The iPad appears to connect but it never pops up asking me for a password.
I have to switch back to my cellular to connect to the net when I'm out and about.
Have tried resetting wifi settings under general and restarting iPad.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    THank you

Try your local library and Starbucks.

  • Login Window Blank When Connecting to Public Hotspot

I have a new MBA running 10.7.2.  Whenever I go into an airport, the open Wi-Fi is detected, and then I am presented with a pop-up screen whose title says "Joining....ABC Wifi" (ABC = whatever the hotspot is).  However, the screen is completely blank.  No buttons on it or any content.  I know that this is a new feature that OSX Lion brought in, so that we wouldn't have to authenticate through a browser window, but with mine being blank, there's nothing I can do to authenticate.
When I open a browser window, all I get is a message saying the security certificate is invalid.  The two airports I use appear to be using Cisco technology for their public hotspots.
Funny thing is that it works fine on my iPad and iPhone.  But on this MBA it doesn't.  And I also tried it on a regular MacBook that I upgraded to Lion - same is

Well I've waited a few days and it looks like my discussion will end up like the rest of the unresolved discussions.
I have one last update for future Macbook Air or any Macbook user for that matter.
I am here at a Barnes and Noble and came here specifically to test out the public wifi. Nothing much has changed on my laptop since the last time I used it at the library per my original post. The one thing that did change was that I just received a UEFI update this morning. For those of you not familiar with it, it is a BIOS update.
Whether or not that had anything to do with why my Macbook Air is working now is beyond me, but I can confirm that yes it is suddenly working now. Perhaps it is because it is sometimes an intermittent issue that the threads before me died.
I would like to clarify though that when all is working correctly, a splash page pops up the moment you join the wireless network. It's not in Safari, it's in its own app/window. What this means is that you should not have to open up Safari to find the webpage although I suspect it's possible to still see it in Safari if you didn't properly accept the terms of use.
I don't want to say it's 100% yet because for me it's only been 50% success, but I hope that if anyone at Apple is listening that I hope that this issue is resolved. A Macbook Air without wireless access may as well be a car without wheels. Hopefully this car doesn't ever lose its wheels again.
    Thanks.

  • HT3446 Security Considerations for TM at Public Hotspots?

I'm successfully using Time Machine (TM) backing up to an AFP share on FreeNAS.  I can access my FreeNAS server from anywhere on the Internet using a dynamic DNS and port-forwarding.
While I'm at a public hotspot, TM backups run successfully--though extremely slowly--as scheduled.
But I'm concerned about security and wondering about whether traffic is going out in the clear on my WiFi connection on its way to my server.  (I did NOT select the TM option to encrypt my backup.)
I'm guessing that EVERYTHING regarding TM is being sent in the clear, including the AppleShare password.
Can anyone comment on the security vulnerabilities in doing a TM backup from a public hotspot?
    Thank you
      - nello

If you ask me, you have a bigger problem.
The mere fact you can access your Time Machine backup from a public hotspot means that ANYONE can.
The issue of whether Time Machine is using a secure vs. insecure connection back to your server is an important one, but the fact is that your server is constantly accessible to the internet and anyone can it hit at any time, not just at the time you're backing up. That means all your data is as secure as your password (which probably means - not a lot).
A VPN is, by far, the preferred solution, and don't expose your data to the outside world.

  • Connection issues on Public Hotspot - Single App mode (MDM)

My iPad is connected permanently to a public hotspot. The connection sometimes is interrupted by a planned maintenance on the AP.
It happens from time to time that the iPad can't recover it's Wifi connection by itself.
Going to the settings> Wifi seems to be enough to reconnect.
Problem is that the device is working in An MDM Single App profile, and so the settings are not meant to be reachable.
Restarting the device is required to reconnect to the public AP.
I know that IOS sometimes turns down WIFI after a certain period of non-use, but in Single App, the iPad stays on, day and night.
It is running in IOS 7.1.
    Is this a know issue?

anyone know how to set a correct task id?

  • Visibility on public hotspots

This is sort of a noob question, but......
I'm in my public library the other day, on their free hotspot, when I suddenly notice several other computers showing up in Finder. I can't log onto any of them, but how do I keep my own machine from showing up on theirs? I have File Sharing turned on for use at home; do I need to disable this when in public? Is there a way to mask my presence on a public network?

    Hi Robert.
    1. turn off any remote or file sharing in System preferences (if you have to have it turned on at all times, set a secure password for your account via the File sharing [ OPTIONS ] button , and use share files using AFP so only you can share between Mac computers.
    2. Use the firewall facility in OS X , System Preferences, Security , Firewall, Start - Advanced - Tick Enabled Stealth Mode - that way no other computers on the network can see you in their Finder/network neighbourhood...
The moment you turn on the firewall, your machine will disappear from the network finder even if you're file sharing - I tested this and confirm that it works over a secure /open Wifi network at home..
You may want to turn off firewall in your mac when at home on the local lan.

    Dear tony874489,
You cannot declare a public object in a method. You have to remove the public if you want it in the method.
If you want the public, declare it as a global variable. That should solve your problem.

  • Mobile Service API no longer working after making app public: 503 Service is unavailable

    Hi guys,
I've been running my Azure Mobile Service in a private beta for a few months now with about 5000 beta testers. My Mobile Service has been working perfectly until I decided to make the app public on the Windows Phone Store. A few minutes after that calls to
the service's API are no longer responding. I debugged my app to see if I could figure out what was wrong, and the mobile service client isn't throwing any exceptions, after the API call is made nothing at all happens.
Both my service and the app are written in .NET C# (the app is also a WinRT app). The mobile service code hasn't been modified in a month, and the code within my app that makes the API calls hasn't been changed since I first wrote it. Also, the service logs
in the dashboard are now blank since the app launched.
If you have any ideas, that'd be awesome. The app depends on the mobile service to function 100%.
    Thanks!
EDIT: After trying to load the service's URL in my browser (http://mytube.azure-mobile.net/) I eventually got an error message saying "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable." The status of the
service on the dashboard says "Ready."
According to the dashboard I have not gotten anywhere near the quota for API calls, and I have even upgraded my account to receive more API calls. The service works locally running it in IIS, and I have tried re-deploying it from Visual Studio.

  • Safari incompatible with some public hotspots (wi-fi)?

Safari seems to have problems with certain wi-fi hotspots. For example, I was staying at a Radisson, and Safari promptly crashed whenever I attempted to use their wi-fi. The same thing happens at Caribou Coffee shops. Alternate browsers (such as Camino and Opera) work fine.
Any ideas on why this might be?

Maybe this will be of some assistance.
We operate a few hotels with hot spots for our guests. These hot spots are free but are protectect by password so only the guests can use them.
The way this operates in our case is that our D-Link router intercepts any attempts to go out on the internet and HiJacks the browser to the authorization page. A cookie used for authentication is set when th browser is HiJacked. Once a correct password is authenticated the router sends the browser to the original destination page.
Problem is Safari doesn't have the security loop holes that Explorer on a Windows machine has and can not be HiJacked. since the needed cookie is set during the HiJack you can not ever manually navigate to the Auth page as a work around.
The only way a Mac running Safari can use this system is if you install FireFox or have an old unsupported version of Explorer on your mac.
Btw, the newest version of Explorer for Windows finally closed this security risk and cannot use the authentication also.
D-Link has yet to provide a solution for this. My guess it won't be anytime soon since they (and most router company's) were relying on security bugs in Explorer as the basis for implimenting thier features.
